[Q] nexus 7 gpu overclocking? - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey Iv been searching for the last couple days and I can't find an answer to my question..:/
Okay, I have a nexus 7 (duh) with motley kernel #246 and I want to oc my GPU but I can't find an app to do it with.. So I'm asking if anyone knows of a free app that will let me control the MHz (and maybe voltage) of my GPU? Or if there isn't an app like that, how would i go about changing said amounts? Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you

Hi! Download Trickster Mod on Google play and there you need to have root access and you can over clock your GPU. I over clocked mine to 520 as it is the stable so far and I got a fps bump of 3-4fps up! Click the Thank you button if I helped ya buddy.

After you download the app, go all the way to the right where it says "SPECIFIC" and there you can change a lot of control including over clocking the GPU.

This is preposterous ! ... ridiculous, even!!
How could I have NOT known about an app as good as this!
Thank you very much, JohnMacky, for the 'heads-up' up on this one!
Rgrds,
Ged.

Thank you solo much!!! I'm glad I signed up for this forum! This is the fastest I have received a reply on any kind of forum! Thank you again!
Am i supposed to turn off "GPU 3d scaling" and that will make it oc? Because I do not see anything else pertaining to the GPU.
And yes I am rooted.

You can't overclock the gpu on motley's kernel. Try m-kernel or faux's kernel. Not all kernels have gpu overclocking.
Sent from my HTC One X using xda app-developers app

I do believe motley's supports up to 446mhz for the gpu, at least that's what his post says...

Franco.Kernel is an excellent option for overclocking the GPU. His kernel app let's you set whatever frequency you want to overclock the GPU at (I think up to 700 mhz). The downside is that there's no CPU overclocking supported.

solved!
Thank you all for helping, I just read a new post (it was posted after I posted this) somewhere else and found out that motley's GPU is set at an overclocked 446mhz and can not be changed

Just use Trinity Kernel or M-Kernel if you want to over clock your GPU over 446mhz. I'm using M-Kernel and I able to overclock mine up to 600mhz while the voltage is set to 1280 and stable so far. Please Click the Thank you button if I helped you.

right above you(not above your head silly). i thanked him for you

BTW, about the GPU scaling just set it to on to increase your battery life. Go to GPU max frequency and change the clock number to whatever you like as long is the kernel supports it then try to decrease every voltage to -5mV for example if a voltage is set to 1200, change it to 1195 in other words, to undervolt to increase more battery life while gaining good enough overall performance. I suggest you download M-Kernels build which is a28. About the thank you button, I think just click my name then find the thank you button there. I forgot how to do it on desktop as I use my xda app to check out forums and I just click on a post then tap the thank you button. Anyways, just keep on posting on this if u want more help. it's my pleasure man

Another noob here.
So, to overclock you have to get another kernel (as opposed to editing a config file somewhere)?
And recent posts in this thread discuss overclocking the GPU. Is also possible to overclock the main CPU? In what circumstances would you choose to overclock one versus the other?

In order to over clock both CPU and GPU, you need to choose a kernel that both supports it. An example is, M-Kernel which is performance oriented. And Bricked Kernel. Install the kernel you preferred via CWM, Then just download trickstermod on Google play to change the frequencies.

Trickster mod hands down. I use it for all my devices without any problems.

V14 kernel

I started this thread because i want to be able to use Sparksco kernel v14 but it freezes when its set to 1.0GHZ I been running v10 as my daily kernel and its bottomline on my top list of kernels. Any help will be much appreciated, im on the latest nightly CM255, i had to revert back to v10 because i need speed to check emails and surf the internet...If theres another update for the V14 in the future i hope that can be a fix or its probably my setup that prevents me from reaching any higher speeds, overall Sparksco you the man!!! By the way ICS devs yall get mad props peace...
I use sparks v14 kernel on cm nightly 255 clocked right under 1ghz using smartass governer no problem. I did a full wipe of everything, and formatted system before install of everything of course. Edit: I clocked it to 2ghz and no freezes here. Did you do a full wipe before the install of the ROM/kernel?

Kernel v14 is more geared for battery saving. I haven't updated the voltages yet because I'm not compiling gingerbread anymore, rather been working on getting a stable ICS rom build before I do more work on it. As soon as we get ICS gingerbread will be a thing of the past. Kernel v14 works good for some and v10 for others. I like v14 because of the battery I've been able to get on 122mhz min and 998mhz max. But if you up the min to the next highest setting (230mhz) you shouldn't get any lockups. Or even try 307mhz.
Edit: looks like 307mhz min is the only clock speed that allows me to overclock to 2ghz and not have any lockups. I'm also on cm nightly 255 pzguzman, and I always keep it on smartass governor.
P.S. The mods should be able to move this thread no problem without removing the comments or thread.

YOU'RE USING THE WRONG GOVERNOR MIN/MAX SETTINGS
For example:
IF I want to get 2ghz out of my phone I use the performance governor and use min/max of 2ghz.
OR:
I would use:
Gov: Smartass
Min CPU: 300mhz
Max CPU: 1.5ghz
You would freeze too if you were a CPU constantly going from 100mhz to 2000mhz all the time!

Smartass2 was made for the HTC Sensation which is a dual core gsm phone much like the Evo 3D (but cdma instead). I could never get it to clock passed 1.4ghz so I don't think it likes our phones much. It's a great concept but the normal old smartass still works much better for the shift.

Again, it depends on the governor and the min cpu. I ran scary stable at 1.9ghz for 24 hours+ straight, no lockups.
for the heck of it I ran it @ the min of like 1something hz for the low and 2.0 max just to see how it ran, and it was solid.

I understand but say you ran scary at min 100mhz and max 1.9ghz with a gov of ondemand, that would freeze for sure on any phone.

Yes you can use Tegrak Overclock (Ultimate) from the market, works on stock kernels
But be very carefull with your voltages, you are warned!
Do you maybe have good settings for the program?
is it possible to underclock to?
Can i leave the voltage standart and only set the cpu to 1.5 or 1.6
Thank you

You might want to look in the kernel threads (FM kernel, Abyss, etc) in development, there is enough info concerning your question, and yes you can underclock with tegrak.
With tegrak you can use any cpu speed you want, is not fixed to a few settings.

One useful thing to do is underclock and undervolt. This phone works perfectl in 1.0ghz with -50 voltage on all clocks and a maximum of 500mnz with screen off, and itll save u a lot of battery.

I'm not sure that kernel has control over voltage. This likely set into u-boot.
But with undervoltage you'll lost stability and you may end with bricked device in case some overwrite bootloader.

Quadrant scores!!!

Hey guys with all the quadrant scores being posted everywhere, I haven't seen a topic dedicated to these alone. So that's what this thread is for. Here are the rules:
Rule 1: when you post a quadrant please tell everyone what Rom/Kernel you are running so if anyone wishes to follow your steps they may do so.
Rule 2: Please merge your posts if your going to post one after another or simply edit your post and update it to maintain order.

old rom: AOKP 40
old kernel: devil .79
old CPU governor: smartassv2
min-max frequency: 200-1400

Current rom: AOKP 40

Current CPU governor: conservative
min-max frequency: 100-1400
I was curious I used the ROM setting built into the AOKP rom to set the cpu frequency, but should i use devil kernel config or manager or nstools. or is that just for live OC? My cpu frequency is set at boot. My quadrant scores are pretty low. Any tips for a noob?

MunkyDrunky that still seems a little low considering what everyone else is pulling. Try this as well. And I'll include the files from my phone when I get to my computer with instructions.
Get if not already had toolbox
And go to performance and SD card boost. Change the value to 2480 (I think it is. It will give you a preferred high set)
Go to app manager and freeze any constantly running services that you would normally use such as yahoo mail Facebook etc. And use the mobile web versions to help save ram. I'll include v6, 3G, and a few other files you'll need as well.
After the SD boost and app freeze reboot phone into recovery and wipe cache and dalvik. Then reboot and try your test again.

All of the 4.2.2 roms I have tried have a settings option called Performance that lets you set the min/max CPU speeds, switch between different kinds of governors, and play around with RAM management settings.

Just downloaded it and it seems to be working fine. Clocks seem to stick. Will edit this post in a couple of hours to confirm for you
I use ROW I/O with MSM-DCVS governor.

So far the clocks have stuck Meaning once you set a clock its stays there, doesn't reset to default. As for govs and I/O, I use msm-dvcs as my gov and row as my I/O. Msm-dvcs will shut a CPU core down when not needed

That's nice... but shutting down a core... isn't that harmful for the phones life or something? Just asking to increase my knowledge that's all...

No, I have never heard of shut a problem. Google it if you are truly worried about it.

Looks like its ok I haven't seen anything that dictates towards it being an issue, so any stable profile you'd suggest for my 907?

Unfortunately I don't dabbled in profiles as I personally find them unreliable. I just stick it at a certain clock and set my govs and I/O. If you want to know my configuration, I set my clock to 1350MHz and min to 384. The gov and I/O I've already mentioned.
Here is a link to what each governor does, and what there advantages and disadvantages are. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1663809

thanks bro, that's really informative, i think ill solve that out but once again, battery life with speed is what everyone's after, yes the M has plenty of oomph under the bonnet but clocking it down will save battery yeah?
the profiles you have set are stable enough? no random reboots or lags?

Yes they are stable. Although experiment with the I/O yourself if you find a better one let me know
