Does our Nexus 10 have a Wolfson DAC? - Nexus 10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

If not, what DAC do we have?

I should imagine so following suite to the nexus 4 and Galaxy SIII

good music quality.

Music quality is on par with SGS3. I.e. really good! Impressed of the speakers as well (do not expect any bass though).

International SGS3 also has a Wolfson DAC. Usually, if you see "Wolfson DAC" you can expect quality to follow.

Music dac = junk or good?

This is my main concern. Who decided to have flac support advertising with such bad sound in the 2? Post what the 3 has here.
I think it will be the the same thing, probably Yamaha. Cutting cost is the name of the game after all. At least we don't have to deal with Beats Audio and I hope Samsung don't jump on that band wagon.
I don't know what exact DAC does Sony phones use, but my Xperia Play have suprprisingly good sound quality.
You might also be interested in the Meizu MX which will also have the same quadcore Exynos as the SIII and pentaband, with 32 or 64gb. Meizu have a reputation of good sound quality. You'll be hard press for any community development on it though.
the DAC is indeed something ive been concerned about.. the SGS1 had a better DAC than the S2.. hopefully another year will make better DAC's cheaper. tomorrow is the big release, but the DAC wont be talked about, things like this never are.. it wont be till we have them in hand and run tests on them ourself that well know what were looking at.. thats how it was with the S1, and the S2 as well..
but i plan to get the S3 the day it comes out, and will be testing the DAC myself, and supercurio will be analyzing my results to see what he can do as well, as he doesnt plan to buy the S3 right away

This is my actual main concern with the S3.
I really want them to get a good audio chip in there.
Currently using my S1 with my digizoid ZO2 & Audeo PFE 232's (yes those £400 earphones)

Like wise using my GSS purely for music. With Supercurios Voodoo it's good enough for me on high end IEMs. Would be a plus to the pocket if this has Wolfson as well. Fingers crossed!
I'm glad that Samsung decided to put Wolfson back into their devices.
The Wolfson on the Hummingbird (Galaxy S and Nexus S) is freaking awesome, especially for EDM.
Voodoo Sound + DSP Manager = a rave in my ear.

If the SOC is Qualcomm, the answer is no.
The traditional question is whether the Exynos and Snapdragon versions will use different DACs and, if so, which ones.
Will we ever see the fruits of the deal that Samsung signed with Wolfson?
Exynos is pretty much guaranteed to carry Wolfson. Qualcomm uses their own DAC in their soc's. If it's anything like the s4 Qualcomm vs Exynos situation then they should both be excellent. Most audiophiles hardly hear a difference between the two. The real advantage of Wolfson comes with audio mods

You bring up a good point and this too is one my concerns, based on every other water resistant device released, loud speaker quality and loudness has been s***. With the HTC M8 releasing with supposedly upgraded BoomSound, it would be counterintuitive for Samsung to further themselves from the quality of HTC's speakers just to provide water resistance.

It seems like Samsung could do themselves and us a favor and make the Exynos compatible with USA LTE carriers and give us all the Wolfson DAC.
The S5 will not feature the best sound repoduction available for music, thats pretty sure, but I'm primarily interested in listening through headphones in which case the choice of which headphone to use contributes to like 95% of the sound quality obtained.
The Qualcomm chipset will have reasonably low noise and distorsion and ok ability to drive phones, its no Wolfson, but it wont exactly cripple a pair of good cans. Not so good cans will always sound inferior on ANY phone. And all the rivals use Qualcomm as well so S5 will only be worse than it's own kin and Iphone. HTCs Beats I can totally live without as I am all in for natural sound ie HiFi ie no coloring of the source. Beats is ALL coloring the source, some like it but I don't.
Rooting will probably be necessary though, to unlock the max volume restriction.
I would have liked a dedicated solution, but I can live with the SOC ....

Audio quality of the M9

I've tried FLAC and DSD music on my UK M9. My preferred headphones are the Sony MDR1RBT but using them as wired headphones. The head amp is much better than the Note 4 and even over BT the music sounds "analogue".
The quality of reproduction is superb.

You can by an external DAC for £25 which gets close to Wolfson. The Samsung head amp is not as good as the one in the M9. Don't know how Dolby compares to Wolfson. I'll need to do some extended comparison listening. But the M9 sounds better to me than the M8.
I can second that. Switched from M8 to M9 and the amp is much better with a sound much louder and more true to a real music experience (instruments sound precise, lots of great mediums and bass). You can tweak the boomsound for different types of headphones as well.

The M9 is also subjectively better than the M8 in some areas. M8 beats it slightly in Distortion and noise but the M9 sounds better, why?
Most important to me is the incredibly low stereo crosstalk, which is the lowest I've seen on a mobile phone, even lower than the Wolfson. IIRC, the Wolfson gets a respectable but not quite as good ~-85 or so.

I noticed a little sound distortion on YouTube using external boomsound speakers. After update to 1.32.401.15 become better, but distortion definitely still persist. Has anyone noticed it?

I was kind of surprised to see this, really. The DAC is on the Snapdragon 810 in this case right? I don't suppose anyone happens to know which one it is?
Could it be that HTC use their own DAC? Or is it built into the SoC?

How is the sound quality in the NON QUAD DAC version?

Hi guys, just want to know how is the sound quality in the NON QUAD DAC version. Is it good enough? Maybe like the HTC 10, Axon 7 or Galaxy S7 sound quality? I know it must be worse than the QUAD DAC version, but how much worse? Is it still worth it or if i'm looking for a good sound smartphone i should look for another one? Where i live the version being sold is the 32GB H870.

That's sad to hear. I'm not going to buy it then.
I think it sounds pretty good.
General consensus is that it sounds just a bit worse than the V20's Quad DAC and better than Galaxy S7, close to HTC M10's quality. Most users and reviewers are impressed.
I believe it does have a DAC. At least i've read that somewhere but i'm not 100% sure.
Offcorse it all depends on headphones. If you have cheap, ****ty headphones no amount of DAC can help you.

No no no. The HTC 10 has a built in DAC and a amp which really makes the music stand out compared to any other phone I have ever owned. Too bad I sold it after a year and upgraded to the g6.
The g6 is a amazing phone only let down by the audio output. If they put the quad DAC in all units then that would of made this phone godly.

As i said i think it does have DAC. It is true that the output volume is not as high as M10's BUT that also depends on headphones.
If you got a pair of good headphones it's gonna sound great and loud. The headphones that come with G6 are pretty crappy tho...
All-in-all M10 is an audiophile phone so it's probably designed for high and low quality headphones meaning even crappy headphones sound okay-ish or at least a lot better than on other "normal" phones.

I use the free vlc player and the 10 level equalizer along with my library of flac music. I run it onto my fender audio system (jetta) via Bluetooth and the sound is incredible. Deep bass, great mids and vocals. The sound with the headphone jack into the aux port isn't noticably better. I highly recommend vlc's free player, I had no idea that it would sound so good. Just play around with each equalizer level till your music sounds the way you want it to. Make sure you start with the levels flat, then go from there. I also put my music on a 128gb Samsung microsdxc card which I purchased on Amazon for only 30.99 I also highly recommend this card. Not as fast as more expensive cards but sound quality can't be beat. Model MB-MP128D. Peace..
Sound is OK it's not bad. But compared to my V10 the sound pales. Not as clean output or wide/deep sound signature.
Sent from my LG-H870 using Tapatalk
LOL. Every digital device that outputs sound has to have a DAC (Digital to Analog Converter), it just converts those 1 and 0 binary codes to electric signal. It's just the quality differs due to price. Some DACs have enough power on their own to drive small headphones, what sets "audiophile" smartphones apart is the addition of an Amp, it takes the electric signal from DAC and amplifies it to drive more power to large headphones with high impedance.
Is there any point in keeping my g5 for its b&o dac or not I have a s8 now well law has had it 6months

SMSL Idea seems to be a great value.
Just read a review.

This has been a great option since I got my note10+ https://www.amazon.com/FiiO-BTR3-Bluetooth-Receiver-Portable/dp/B07SM53586/ref=pd_cp_23_1?pd_rd_w=nIKPc&pf_rd_p=ef4dc990-a9ca-4945-ae0b-f8d549198ed6&pf_rd_r=WXJ9NFZBTP7ND1NBBHKF&pd_rd_r=11e0eb83-d4f3-4773-a5a1-9d5b441cabda&pd_rd_wg=bAgbx&pd_rd_i=B07FVN14FH&refRID=WXJ9NFZBTP7ND1NBBHKF&th=1

I use the Fiio BTR3 as well, great little DAC/AMP especially once you enable the LDAC codec in dev options and stream HiFi audio with a source like TIDAL. Paired it with 1MORE Quad Driver earbuds that run 32Ohm impedance which the BTR3 is able to output.

Yup, although I am using Etymotic Er4XR with this. I unfortunately am using Apple Music, stuck in their ecosystem. But sounds great so far with LDAC!
Question, do you have the ability to change the LDAC settings to highest quality in dev options? I tried but it keeps reverting to best effort?
I have Hidizs Sonata using exynos model. Best sound Ive ever heard using my Westone W60's. Even better than my previous LG V30. Large soundstage and very loud. I didn't expect this but I'm very happy about it.
I found a cheap $7 adapter/DAC and it plays nicely with my KZ earbuds (supports 24bit/384). Before I was looking into the UP4, BTR5, etc. But for now I'll hold off buying more expensive gear.

+1 for this DAC. I'm using it with Shure 845 earphones, connected with a balanced 2.5mm adapter listening to TIDAL Hi-Fi/Master music saved to my device. Simply superb! i travel 43+ weeks a year and this music combination makes the long commutes (3+hour flights) easier to tolerate.

I have a pair of se845s as well. I just bought the Shure usb-c to mmcx cable which obviously has a DAC built in. It's a beautiful thing. Sound is perfectly balanced with minimal hissing (which was a problem for me using other DACs on these sensitive monitors). I was struggling until I got these, now I don't care if a phone has a headphone jack or not.

I just got mine today. However, I can't figure out how to just use it as a USB DAC. The input is just using bluetooth from my Note. What am I missing?
My dragonfly red and note 10+
I will be adding the usb audio player pro. Any other advice? I will be getting my 1MORE triple driver earbuds tomorrow. Have the beats solo3 (did I get that right? They wired earbuds for android...) Cant wait to see how this works...I like high quality sound, you could say I am a beginner audiophile...
Ps my signature is old old old, you can tell how long it's been since I had time to post here at xda...!)
