Ubuntu released a mobile version - Galaxy Note 10.1 General

If you been to the site lately you might have noticed the countdown clock, well it hit zero about 45 min ago. And Engadget just posted this
www.engadget.com/2013/01/02/ubuntu-for-smartphones/ which I think is pretty cool. Hope to see it action soon.
if you want to see the phone its about 6 min in the video.

Its only available for galaxy nexus in a couple weeks. It will be a while before roms will implement some of the features.
I think it looks awesome though, im hoping google buys them out.

I hope they actually go somewhere. Because stuff like this causes innovation. Makes Android, Windows and iOS try harder if they want to stay in the race. As long as apple does not sue everyone out of business first haha

And if Ubuntu is smart they will not allow carries to add their custom flair to it. Even though it is open source. It would get rid of the hectic of waiting for updates. If carries really want to have custom skin. Make it like ADW launcher where you can add it if you want it.

Hmm...good point. From what the guy said in the the video, it seems that the updates would be pushed straight to the device just like Ubuntu Desktop. Otherwise, he pretty much lied and it's not just like the desktop version with "frequent updates."

That's not going too happen. Windows is copywrited it'd be like stealing a copy of windows 7 and installing it on your pc. Illegal
As long it is a Windows 7 phone it has to be Windows OS. As for android which is opensource...

Actually, its in the process of being done on the EVO, Its not final if it will work or start, but it was able to boot. Maybe at the End of the Summer, it may be available for the Evo, and it might get ported to the epic, but the chances are highly unlikely.

One of my favorite features of the HTC phones was the ability to dual-boot android or WinMO. The Touch Pro was awesome with this. Unfortunately HTC doesn't want to make a decent phone with a keyboard anymore, and nobody else likes WinMO.

If not by Samsung by the rom gurus?

You mean "could be bothered" to port it. I'm sure that someone _could_, but an OS designed for a tablet on a 4.3" screen would be a bit average.
Wait for the Cyanogen guys to port IceCream Sandwich (Android 4.0?) if/when it turns up. By that time Samsung will have dropped the SGS2 like last weeks spam sandwich and will be pushing the SGS3 instead.
Of course, that won't be until around Christmas sometime I'd be guessing.
God dammit, this is about the 3rd topic on the same thing. SDK does not equal the whole os, google have only put out the source for the gpl bits and a lot of android is apache.
And a 3.0 port wouldn't make much sense on a 4.3inch screen
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA Premium App
this is the exact reason why Google hasn't made honeycomb open sourced.
Honeycomb is only meant for tablets. Until people learn to accept that it will remain closed. We've already seen android ruined by sub-par OEMs putting android on their **** hardware.
I hope not, honeycomb looks so messy at the moment
There really is no point putting honeycomb on a phone, the optimisations are mainly just for larger screens. If there is something nice in there it normally gets ripped out and cooked into a ROM or app anyway, its just a waste of time doing a full port IMHO.

I have a Note and almost all those have been ported/pulled. Take a trip to the i717 forums and see if the pulled .APKs work.
The galaxy s1 had Ports that were crazy coming from the vibrant I know with experience. I guess its difficult with so few devs or I don't know. The vibrant was truly a sublime experience. Too bad that carrier phones don't get good specs or source codes or updates for that matter or this phone would be as fun as the nexus or the international s2. But hey we get burned by the American market every time. If we could get universal technology it would be a bigger market all together.

I want to learn to port or make a ROM

So I want to try and learn how ROMs work. Or maybe that's a little bit too much to start with, maybe mods and hacks and stuff. Is there any tutorials on how to start anything that has to do with development that someone has actually used and learned from and worked with him that you can point me out to? Or at least can someone tell me where I should start to be able to learn all that I need to know?
I've done some theming and editing .xml files and decompliling and stuff so its not that I don't know anything, just don't know enough.

Yes young padawan. You have much to learn in the ways of the force.
No disrespect to the OP or anyone else, but if you have to ask how then you aren't ready.
Do some research: take apart zips, find out how things work. Learn about Android as a whole (helps to also learn how 'nix) works also, Android is of course based largely on it), and most importantly trial and error.
The force is strong in this one, I can feel it. But he must complete the trials in order to fully understand the true nature of the force.

So basically I need some help that's all.
And I too see that CM7/9, AOKP and all those are the same. Especially the 2 versions of MIUI. So I would like to start my own thing kind of like sence and blur. Sence would be something I would be interested in doing since I loved my htc phones before this one, but since its already started I will try and work on something else.

AOKP/CNA/Gummy is kinda like Sbrissen mod for touchwiz gingerbread roms on steroids. Like xbox said, the AOSP thing has been done to death on ICS. All we're getting at this point is some pointless fragmentation between the roms.
UBER/Biggorn/Big Goron or whatever name your using these days , I wish you luck with that endeavor. I tried to do my own for a couple months and realized that I was updating it every other day thanks to what was getting merged in on the other roms. and i also want these phones with frickin' laser beams attached.
Id be fine with touchwiz stripped of all bloatware, leaving sammy tweaks (smartstay etc.) and wifi calling, but give us the CM7/tmo theme engine, touchwiz is fugly. The single most important thing I want, and its a safety thing because I drive for work, volume rocker track skip.
