[Q] Tethering another phone (with data) so my N4 can use it - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Situation:
I have an LG Optimus V (with Virgin Mobile) that is currently under the 25 dollar plan (basically has 3G "unlimited").
I have it rooted and use Wireless Tether for Root Users to usually tether data to my laptop, iPad, even my desktop w/ a wireless USB adapter.
However no settings I have tried and played with can get my Nexus 4 to see the tether set up by my LG Optimus V at all. My iPad, laptop, and desktop see it, but my N4 cannot.
I have tried Barnacle Tether, and same result.
Is there something I can do to get my N4 to see my other phone's tether and use it properly like my other devices?
Thanks in advance.

Mine is on Auto on my N4. There is no option for that on my LG Optimus V (on a custom ROM though).

I've tried all suggestions given to me.
No luck.
Anyone else?

Any luck with this?

I would try a bluetooth tether, also check if you can put the optimus in an infrastructure mode if its on ad hoc mode

foxfi
that was my answer to my problem and just like @lopezk38 said use the bluetooth wifi... foxfi worked just great for me.:cyclops:

Don't know if it makes any difference but the Optimus V lacks 802.11n In its Wi-Fi hardware just something to consider and rule out as a culprit.

Connect Nexus S to tethering hotspot?

Is there a way I can connect the Nexus S to my Droid's Wi-Fi tethering? The NS isn't recognizing the network and won't connect when I type in the SSID. I know it's probably just a simple setting I need to change on the Droid, but I'm not sure which one. Any help is appreciated.
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
Is there any security on the Droid's tether? Try disabling all security and reconnecting. You should Have to type in the SSID, just select the network like any other wireless connection. I used my Nexus One to give the Best Buy demo unit service when tried it out - worked flawlessly.
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
No security or anything on it. Perhaps my wireless frequency channel is incorrect; could you tell me what yours is set to on your Nexus One?
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
Not seeing the option to change Channels on the Nexus One... only configuration options are SSID and password.
You dont see it as a wifi network?

Are you using the tethering function built into Android? It seem that my Droid doesn't support that as my only built-in option is USB tethering (I'm running CM 6.1 stable, so it should be there I should think).
I'm using the Wireless Tether for Root Users application to do tethering on my Droid. It's worked with numerous other devices (iPod Touches, my laptop, even game consoles recognize the network), but it seems that other Android phones in general (I tested some friends' phones; Droid Eris, Droid Incredible, and now my NS) don't see the network and refuse to connect to it.

Nope, and even when I type in the SSID manually, it's like it doesn't exist.

Ah I see. Yes I was using Androids built in tethering function.

Wireless Tether for Root uses ad-hoc to connect. Android does not yet support the ad-hoc protocol. However, the iphone, ipad, and desktop OS's do support ad-hoc.
Also, I believe the nexus one uses native infrastructure mode...that's why you were able to tether with it.

Edit: ^ beat me to it lol
could it be that wireless tether for root users only does ad hoc wireless networks vs native Androids infrastructure mode? I know i tried to tether my work laptop to my vibrant with wireless tether (think it was pre 8 or something) and my companies base image didnt allow connections via ad hoc for our vpn. Maybe android phones are the same? just a guess...

Thanks for the info. I guess I have to either hope they get native tethering working on the Droid or Android gets ad-hoc support in a future update.

Does you're wifi tethering work? I can't get it to work.
It's installed, it's sending a signal, but I can't pick up the signal on any of my computers, phones, or tablets.
I'm using wireless tether 2.0.8.
Don't install another app (wireless tether).
Use the program that comes stock on your phone. You can find it under settings > wireless and network > tethering and portable hotspot > portable wi-fi hotspot settings.

Thanks. I guess I'll stick with this one.
I guess there is no point for anyone to write a kernel for this app to allow netfilter-enable, especially since the stock one actually shows up as a wifi signal as opposed to ad-hoc.

Bluetooth pairs but won't connect

I have successfully paired my nexus 7 to my evo 3d and my HP laptop. However, it will not connect to either one. There is no connect option visible either. Both the laptop and my evo 3d connect fine to each other and other Bluetooth devices. Is my nexus 7 faulty or am I missing something?
Edit: ok it connects fine to my Bluetooth headphones, so why won't it connect to my phone or my laptop?

i used foxfi and pdanet to pair my nexus 7 to my sgs3 and tether my nexus 7!, maybe those 2 apps could help
Thank you. That does seem to allow me to tether. But why won't my tablet connect on its own though the Bluetooth setting?

Not sure if this helps, but I have Verizon and it seems that they block Bluetooth tethering while on 4G LTE. I could get my phone and nexus 7 to pair, but wouldn't connect. However when I switches my phone to 3G, my tablet and phone connected no problem. Its nice BC when they are connected your tablet automatically uses your phones internet. If I just want to use 3G, I go this route. When I want to connect them while my phone is on 4G LTE, I have to use foxfi/pdanet.
In other words connecting while the phone is on 4G seems to be blocked. Switch to 3G and see if that doesn't work to connect.
Hope this helps.

Clicking on the other device in bluetooth settings usually gets it to connect for me. If I walk away from my tablet with my phone I have to redo the process.

I have the same issue as you. It may be that our phone don't have the right BT Profile for "Internet Access".
Are there any other options? I've tried FoxFi and that didn't create the "Internet Access" profile either. I'm on a Samsung Stratosphere with 2.3.

I have also been trying to tether my new Nexus 7 with my old Xperia X10 mini. I can pair but not connect. I can't access my Bluetooth settings on my Nexus. I can't pass files vie Bump either. I can't get the wifi tether to the phone working either: My phone doesn't allow me to download Foxfi, my phone says PDAnet doesn't work on my version of Android. I bought the Nexus in the UK but I'm using it in Germany. My phone is with O2 which typically requires an additional €20 charge to tether. Any advice would be appreciated.
I think you folks are missing a setting?
Hi
Aside from pairing, on the device whose connection is being shared (i.e the phone), you need to goto settings-->More-->Tethering And Portable Hotspot, and make sure that 'bluetooth tethering' is selected.
This works on my Galaxy Note. 4.04 ICS
No 3rd party apps are required to do this. Note that Bluetooth PAN only came to android in 3.0. If your phone runs 2.3x or below, you'll need the software discussed elsewhere in this thread to make BT tethering work.
Whatever internet connection the phone has is shared, whether wifi or 3g
NB: Its a bit flakey! OK once connected, but requires BT to be cycled off/on on both ends...

Theres a wee bug in android where after a new pair, restart, or occasionally on bluetooth disconnections bluetooth tethering will become disabled on the host device.
Go to the device with the Internet Connection and (on ICS / JB) hit Settings -> More -> Tethering & portable hotspot -> Bluetooth tething and check it.
You'll have to redo this regularly but combined with an occasional bluetooth off/on unpair / repair this will work.
(Nexus 7 / Galaxy Nexus - both rooted stock)
Hi
If you don't have the screen below (or equiv) mentioned in my previous post, then you wont be able to tether without using 3rd party apps. I guess the BT PAN profile is missing where this option is not available.

Thanks for this. All was working fine between my UK (stock European with a few Vodafone apps) Samsung Galaxy S3 (SIII) and Note 10.1 until I upgraded to 4.1.1 on my S3. It seems this option was added then or disabled by default. All working splendidly now, cheers.
Droid Razr Nexus 7 connection
All,
You can tether the 4G LTE on a nexus 7 you just have to enable bluetooth tetheriing in Setting > Tethering & Mobile Hotspot > Bluetooth tethering
Without doing this, it won't link via bluetooth tethering. As for laptop, you have to allow access point in your laptop in order to allow the Nexus 7 to fully connect to your laptop to share files.
Cheers!
This thread has the most similar problems that I have. By me the problem is opposite. I need to get internet connection on my phone (xperia U) and the only way is through tethering through my iphones hotspot. Bluetooth says paired but not connected and wifi hotspot isn't found in the list of wifi networks.
Bluetooth tethering worked fine on ICS but I downgraded to GB and now nothing. I can't install 3rd party apps yet because no internet on phone.
Is there no other option? Is it either GB, lag free phone but no tethering option or laggy ICS phone with tethering??

You need to be rooted. After flashing, you'll find that option (Settings > Wireless & Networks > Tethering and portable hotspot).
there is no option to do it without root the device?
there is not external app that can do the same thing ?
Well, is there any options similar to what I said in my last post?

No, you need to mod the kernel at least.

Auto WiFi tether NFC?

Is there an app such as tasker to make it so that if I tap my galaxy S3 to a nexus 7 it'll start WiFi tether on my phone and connect the nexus 7 to it? I'm gonna get a nexus 7 for Christmas and want to figure this out before hand.
Sent from my SPH-L710 using xda app-developers app
i would think that you would manually have to connect the Nexus 7 to your phone's Wi-Fi tether manually first. and at that point, the configuration is saved.
then setup a Tasker or an NFC tag to toggle your Wi-Fi tether of your phone. when it broadcasts a signal, your Nexus 7 would automatically pick it up and connect.
that is, unless your Nexus 7 is not already connected to another Wi-Fi.

Good question. I have an S2, an N7 and tasker so I'll give it a shot and see if it works.
Edit: couldn't get it to work, neither the phone or the tablet could see each other, but I'm not sure if it's just that it is not supported or there is something wrong with my setup. I tried reading an rfid card but that didn't work either.

I'm basically working with the same exact stuff... Verizon GS3 and a Nexus 7. My N7 is running Team EOS 3 Nightly build 37 (which is still 4.1.2), Timur's kernel (from Rootzwiki) which allows USB audio and forces charging while in OTG mode, and a car setup.
There's an app called AutoTether which is the closest thing I've found to getting the N7 to initiate a Wifi Tether connection on the phone. It has a widget you can place on the home screen of the N7, and when you press Enable, it sends out the command via Bluetooth to the phone. The phone receives this signal, and begins whichever wifi tether app you choose (I personally use the TrevE Wifi Tether variant).
I've played around with automating wifi tethering and Tasker, and just can't seem to get it to work properly/reliably. At one point the creator of AutoTether mentioned he would integrate it into Tasker, but he hasn't, and he didn't respond to my email when I asked that question. If it were integrated into Tasker then this would be the ultimate solution IMO.

There's an app in the market specifically designed for exactly what you're talking about - I bought it and it works exactly as described.
However, the reason I do not use it is 2-fold:
1. In order for NFC to operate, both devices must have the screen on and be unlocked (this is due to NFC security protocol) which means I have to unlock my phone, unlock my tablet, then touch them together.
2. It's wayyy faster to just unlock my phone, click on the Wifi tether setting shortcut I placed on my home screen, activate the hotspot, and my Nexus 7 connects automatically as soon as it sees the open (saved) connection.
So I found the "neatness" of the NFC magic irrelevant as it is slower and more cumbersome (can you imagine dropping one or both devices because you wanted to look cool holding them up to each other?)
**** THAT lol
To make things even more complicated there's mods we can install to make NFC work without unlocking screens haha
