tethering between Archos Gen 8 and Android Phone

Why is it impossible to use the tethering by BT between the Archos Gen 8 and more android phone ?
fortunately on the nexus one i wil be create a hotspot
but for another phones have you a solution ?

Hy with Samsung Galaxy 9000 it works very easy. Build up a Mobile Hotspot on the SGS and Connect with to the Archos, works perfectly.

You can get it to work on N1 too ... but I don't think it is built into the phone though.
I use CyanogenMod 6 on my N1, and there are only options to do Wifi Hotspot (which burns battery power like there is no tomorrow) or USB tehtering.
But if you use the app called Wireless Tether, you can use BT tethering between your Gen8 and your phone.

Yeah, I've been posting this same question all over the place begging for someone to help me tether to my Moto Cliq (rooted with tethering enabled). I even asked Archos and they sent me some generic response that didn't help at all.
I know my Cliq can tether, cause my PC can connect to it. But with my Archos, all I get is the "paired, but not connected" nonsense. No matter what I do. It's the same with my N900 as well. I am starting to think that the Bluetooth module on the Archos is defective. But I don't have any other Bluetooth devices to test it out with.
This thing is almost useless to me without tethering as a possibility.

Android does not officially support AdHoc Networks. Once we have root we can make this work easily.

I tried the same with my wifes inc and it didn't work.

iPhone 4 and BT Tethering
1. Remove all previous BT pairing between iPhone and Archos 70.
2. Se both BT to active and discoverable.
3. Once you see iPhone under "bluetooth devices" in Archos, get it paired.
4. At this point, you will see that status on Archos is "paired but not connected"
5. In Archos, goto "Cell phone tethering", you should be asked to set up a tethering profile for Bluetooth or USB. Select Bluetooth and a new iPhone PAN profile will be setup.
6. Select checkbox for "Tether"
7. At this point, you will see Archos device in iPhone changed to "Connected", and a blue bar at the top says "Internet Tethering".
Bear in mind if iPhone or Archos goes to sleep, my experience is that the Internet connection is gone, no matter if the connection status remains. Therefore, please do not allow iPhone or Archos to go to sleep while you are using the Internet tethering connection.

WiFi Tethering has been introduced with Froyo for most phones. Before that you needed root and some app doing it.
WiFi Tethering with my Desire works great, but I wasn't able to setup Bluetooth Tethering between them. Like there are profiles missing to establish a network connection.

Try the Toshiba Bluetooth Stack, there is a 30 day free trial and it give you PAN. I have a HTC Eris and bluetooth tethering is not possible, it crashes the phone.

I have an Espresso running CM 6.1 and WiFi Hotspot works... Will I be able to use it with the Archos 70?

HTC Magic with Cyanogenmod 6.1 and the app 'Wifi Tethering' in bluetooth mode works perfectly.

I thought wifi tethering was going to eat the battery too.
Was able to tether from ~90% to ~10% for over 6 hours continuously on an Evo running cm6.1.1 with the built-in mobile hotspot.

use mifi or similar product, i use a product from ZTE and work well. better don't use your android phone for wifi thetering, it will drain your phone battery much faster

use you phone to search for "google wireless tether" and download the apk this is free and works great for BT tethering between my 101 and moto droid 1.

This does not work for us with Sprint. Sprint uses CDMA not GSM. No APN on my Sprint HTC Hero. Tethering works perfectly with my Laptop and my HTC Hero using Bluetooth. NOT with Archos 70 IT.

Uhh... I'm not having problems tethering with BT, Archos 101 and Sprint (HTC) Hero. Not at all sure what makes you think CDMA vs GSM has to do with this.

Bluetooth Tethering on Atrix

I have searched the forum far and wide and so far haven't found anything on this. Is it a possiblity to tether over bluetooth on the Atrix? I currently pay for tethering but using the mobile hotspot feature chews battery life up 10 fold. Any thoughts or ideas on this??

Did you ever get an answer to the tethering issue??? I can't tether my Xoom either. wifi works fine, But i'd rather use the BT.... Rooted 1.8.3 GB 3.1

I have successfully enabled Bluetooth tethering on my atrix 4g from my windows 7 x64 computer. Basically i did the following.
1) Install wireless tethering application 2.0.7
2) Under settings in wireless tether, navigate to Bluetooth, then make sure use Bluetooth is checked. Also check don't disable Wi-Fi. Also if you haven't paired check make discoverable.
3) click on the wireless icon to enable tethering.
4) from your computers Bluetooth software, enable Bluetooth Dun.
5) add new connection from Bluetooth software, pair with atrix, it should connect, and you will see a yellow shield pop up on the Atrix with the computers ip address, which means the connection is made. After 30 seconds or so, internet should be enabled on the windows 7 computer.

Unfortunately, this did not work for me. When I loaded the wireless tethering app it said that my kernel does not allow me access control or something along those lines. Yes, I'm rooted so I guess that's not the issue. Also, when I paired my phone with my computer, the only option it gave me was for bluetooth file transfer and not DUN. Any ideas? Oh yeah, I'm running Mac OSX but that shouldn't make a difference. (?)

[Guide] Bluetooth Tether and File Transfer

There multiple threads dealing with how to get Bluetooth tether to work here is how.
First you need a rooted Android phone.
You must have a phone that running a kernel that has "CONFIG_BT_BNEP" compiled into the kernel you are using.
Otherwise it won't work.
1. Download Android Wifi Tether App version 2.0.7 (do not download higher versions because bluetooth option is not there.
2. Go to your phone turn on bluetooth.
3. Go to your TF -> Settings -> Wireless & Network -> Enable Bluetooth.
Then in TF make Discoverable under Bluetooth Settings.
4. Now you can pair the phone with the TF by scanning for device under your phone.
Hit confirm to pair on both devices. You will notice that both devices will show the other device as "paired but not connected."
5. You need to now go to Wireless & networks settings under the TF -> Tethering & portable hotspot -> enable Bluetooth tethering.
6. Now go to the Wireless Tethering app on your phone. Menu -> Settings -> Enable Use Bluetooth, Enable Discoverable, Enable Access-Control
7. Exit out of the Settings in the Wireless Tethering app. Enable Bluetooth Tether.
8. Go back to the TF under Bluetooth Settings you should be able to tap the your phone device and get the tethering option.
9. You may need to allow the TF on your phone's Wireless Tethering app.
To get Bluetooth File Transfer to work download the Bluetooth File Transfer app from Market to both devices then you are done. No rooted device needed.

Bluetooth tether unsuccessful
Wifi Tethering works but need bluetooth tether at work since I can't use wifi due to wifi policy. Followed the steps above and still no go for me. I have htc evo Myns 2.2. Any other suggestions?

Try get Bluetooth File Transfer to work on your phone and the TF. Were you at least able to achieve that?

First of all thank you for the guide, it worked flawlessly with my TF and Droid X its just the wording causes a bit of confusion for me. Not sure if you meant disable or enable and the option was already unchecked for me.

I did this just last night and tethered to my DX. I didn't have the Wireless Tether app, so I had to go find it - not on the market since the carriers are *****ing about tethering, but I was able to find it from the developer.
Set it to BT tethering, paired the devices and hit the wrench icon on the TF, and BAM! Tethered!
I won't use it very much at all, but I'm taking a couple weeks off and will likely do a 4 day road trip with a friend, so having a connection out on the road will be nice.

Just a heads up.. running a rooted D1 I was able to get my TF to bluetooth tether but not to share the 3G. Installed a ROM (CM7) and was good to go with 3G bluetooth tether working like a charm.

Saves way more battery than wifi tether and also better speed.

Bluetooth options are disabled under wifi tether. I have enabled bluetooth on my rooted thunderbolt and the TF and both see each other. But I cant proceed further.

I tried this and the wifi apk said I didn't have the correct kernel and so this didn't work...and some of the options were greyed out.
I have an X10 with cobrato's MIUI installed and the stock kernel.

Mine worked great the last time I used it (a couple of weeks ago) but now it won't connect to my phone.. No idea why

Same issue here using a HTC Inspire 4G. Gets through Paried but not Connected step but on the phone the bluetooth options under Wireless Tether settings are grayed out.

Are you using version 2.0.7 I linked in the OP? I am also on Inspire 4G. Of course I assume your phone is rooted.

You shouldn't have to use a tethering app to use the bluetooth tethering on the droid x. You can set up the tethering through the stock wieless and network menus on the DX and transformer.

Tried bluetooth file transfer but keep getting errors when sending a picture to my Transformer. Any other suggestions?

Yes, phone is rooted running Cognition HD 1.01 and confirmed version 2.0.7 Wireless Tether.

Easy tether to a transformer?

can it be done? I have the paid app, but it doesnt seem to be recognizing my droid x. Even when easy tether is activated.

You can't usb tether from android to android

if you have a rom that supports wifi hotspot you can u use that to tether to your transformer. I do it with my g2x all the time.

im using barnacle on my tbolt to connect to wifi on my TF right now...

Easytether is for usb tethering. The OP is trying to tether from 1 Android device to another Android device with a usb cable not wifi. At this time it is not possible.

dont think so. wifi hotspot is the only way i know of.

No, I don't think so. I had one app which had to be installed on phone and tab and was able to tether over bluetooth but it was very very unstable and never worked longer than 10 seconds.
Here is my setup:
SGS (i9000) with darkyrom and build in wifi tether + tasker app for automatically switch on and off wifi tether when a specific bluetooth device is connected.
I use my tab in the car and when i start it, the bluetooth connection from phone to the hands-free is established and wifi tethering enabled with tasker automatically. this takes less power and has the full internet speed. works great for me!

I think that is exactly what I am looking for. I want use TF with internet connection when there is no wifi around. So phone provide internet connection to TF. Understood true?

I teathered my TF to my friends Droid X thru bluetooth and I was able to surf the inet using his Verizon account.

You can tether over bluetooth (The instructions are around here somewhere)

I use PDA Net connected over bluetooth to my Droid Incredible. I have the paid for version, but the free version should work too. Paid version lets you get into https sites and VPN's. I don't use a lot now since through work I have a MiFi from AT&T, but sometimes I get into GSM deadspots where my CDMA (Verizon) phone works just fine.

that might be very tricky but it would be awesome! Following situation: Me sitting in a sub, galaxy nexus in my pocket and the nexus 7 in my hands. Now, I would like to activate Tethering via the tablet on my galaxy nexus and be online 5-6 seconds later. Anyone an idea?

Found myself in the same situation yesterday in the coach on the way home from work. Had a lap full of nexus 7 and earphones whilst trying to pull out my GNex out of my pocket hoping that the driver doesn't slam on the breaks!
Have just decided to leave tethering turned on on my GNex and when I pull out my tab, just flick on the wifi so it connects. Not ideal on battery for the GNex but it works.

I use bluetooth tether on my vision.
Find it saves a lot of battery power.
I leave the 2 devices connected constantly, for tablet talk, and just leave the option to allow bluetooth tethering turned on on my vision.
So when I don't have wifi, I just tap 'connect' on my n7 and I'm good to go

I've had the same irritation using wifi hotspot function with my GS2. Just tried the bluetooth tether and it works just fine. Many thanks for this suggestion!

I stopped using bluetooth tethering because it would autodisconnect whenever a wifi signal was around and then doesnt reconnect. As for wifi it will stay connected and maintain positive connection longer.

I leave the Bluetooth Tethering option ticked on my Galaxy Nexus and connect with my Nexus 7 (via Settings > Bluetooth > tap on Galaxy Nexus) when I need to (or just place a shortcut on your homescreen).
The problem is that Bluetooth Tethering cuts out after a few minutes (known bug) and I have to repeat. But since it cuts out, it doesn't drain the battery at all (unless I am actively using the data connection, of course).

I suggest using foxfii and PDAtablet for Bluetooth tethering. A few apps won't recognize the internet, however you don't have to worry about it cutting out. And it still uses Bluetooth so there is less battery drain than WiFi.
Just always remember while Bluetooth tethering with whichever option to turn OFF your WiFi on the tablet. If not it will keep searching for WiFi even though your BT tethered, and cause data drop.

You could probably use Tasker to kick WiFi Tethering on on your phone when it detects your tablet neaby (via bluetooth), so when you want to connect, you turn wifi and bluetooth on on the tablet.
EDIT: Of course, you can also use Tasker to turn WiFi Tether on on your phone based on your location, the absense of your work/home wifi, the time of day, and many other options or combinations of options. It's a really useful app, IMO.

I'm trying a slightly different scenario. I don't want Bluetooth tethering, I want WiFi tethering but with Bluetooth connected so I can use Tablet Talk. It almost works. For a short while it'll work that way and then the WiFi drops on my Galaxy Nexus and won't reconnect until I disconnect BT again.
I'm probably posting this in the wrong forum since I've since determined the problem is with my GNex and not my N7.
I'm curious as to how people are using BT tethering though. In my experience there are too many applications that don't work over the BT tether. Are those of you tethering over BT just using the browser? Seems far more limiting than using WiFi tether... unless of course I'm also trying to connect over BT at the same time.

I've solved my own problem... I've use FoxFi in the past with my TouchPad and didn't find it any better than the built in Tethering. Today I installed it and the add-on on my tablet, and I can safely say that this setup rocks!

So straight forward but such a revelation for me!! I always hated tethering w/ my phone cuz it sucks the battery and it gets so warm, but the BT tethering is a great alternative. Now my tablet is relevant wherever I go w/ my phone.

+1 on blue tooth.
Whenever I use wifi hotspot for any length of time, my phone will eventually time out and cut the connection. Using bt it will stay tethered for hours on end.

I was curious about this as well. I briefly tried Bluetooth tethering a few days ago with FoxFi and PdaNet, but I noticed that although I could surf the net, I couldn't get Gmail to sync. I didn't try anything else so I don't know what else doesn't work, but is this typical of Bluetooth tethering?

Just tried basic bluetooth tethering and happily sent and received email

Is basic Bluetooth tethering simply pairing the phone and tablet and that's it (no third party apps)? I tried to do that and even though the use internet connection box was checked for both devices (they won't uncheck for some reason either), I couldn't get internet working, which is why I resorted to FoxFi/PdaNet.

Like I said, auto tether from the market is the best option

I can't get my N7 to see my GNex with BT, the GNex sees the N7 though.

Does anyone know if the xperia s can use Bluetooth tethering for internet access??
Edit: never mind found my answer lol. Xperia s connected to n7 via Bluetooth and can successfully surf the net on my n7
