Does you're wifi tethering work? I can't get it to work.
It's installed, it's sending a signal, but I can't pick up the signal on any of my computers, phones, or tablets.
I'm using wireless tether 2.0.8.
Don't install another app (wireless tether).
Use the program that comes stock on your phone. You can find it under settings > wireless and network > tethering and portable hotspot > portable wi-fi hotspot settings.

Thanks. I guess I'll stick with this one.
I guess there is no point for anyone to write a kernel for this app to allow netfilter-enable, especially since the stock one actually shows up as a wifi signal as opposed to ad-hoc.

After rooting my phone I figured i would give the hotspot a shot. But when i try to browse on my ipad it brings me to the VZW self provision broadband page.
I normally use wifi tether, but i would rather be able to use the built in because its an infasture netowork vs the ad-hoc wifi tether gives me.
Not the case

actually your right and your wrong at the same time sadly; your right about the infrastructure network vs ad-hoc, but wrong about the 3g hotspot app vs. tethering & portable hotspot not an app.
The 3g hotspot app is a verizon product not googles in the sense your looking at.
The tethering & portable hotspot should have been activated in wireless & networks section, right between "Bluetooth setting & VPN settings" from a froyo(2.2) google standpoint but in our case its not even there.
Hope this clears up the mistakes about froyo tethering & portable hotspot and verizon 3g mobile hotspot app.
Yes it does thanks! I have a nexus one So i know what your talking about.

he stated in the post that he was rooted, he just wanted to use the native tethering application.
Does this mean that if we can get a vanilla Froyo or a custom ROM compiled from source that we'll have the true Android hotspot?

That's all fine and well except that the wifi tether app runs in adhoc mode not infrastructure.

why do not you just use pdanet from market?
There was a new experimental Wifi Tether build that was released dismorning bringing it up to Pre9. I was unable to find a change log, still adhoc?

Pdanet creates an ad hoc network just like every other third party app.

If its just the one computer you are logging on with use the BT method very easy and works quite well for free and even on non-rooted phone
I have the nexus S. Does anyone know how to tether when you don't have the tethering plan? I've been looking everywhere.
thanks guys!
NS4g tethers out of the box. I would assume the reg NS would too.
Settings > Wireless & Networks > Tethering & portable hotspot > Check the box to turn it on.
well the thing is my carrier blocks it as they want you to pay 10 bucks a month for the tethering. But there's gotta be a way to allow tethering so that the carrier doesnt know.
there are programs on the market you can download. Easytether i believe... there's a free version but it doesn't work with any secure sites, so forget fb if you use the free one. i think they want 10 bucks for the unrestricted app.
But yes there are options
still doesnt work. there needs to be some settings changed so that I can tether

There are a hundred posts on here about it... but yours is the first I've seen of a carrier blocking it. Which carrier? I find it hard to believe, no offense.
Just as an aside, how do you actually surf the internet after enabling tethering in the phone settings? Just connect the phone to the computer via usb?

Connect the phone via the USB card and put the phone in tether mode.. (Settings/Wireless and Networks/Tethering .../ USB Tethering) The option isn't available until the phone is connected.
The phone will be recognized as a network device and may require network device discovery. It depends on your system and what you have had previously installed. I use tethering from time to time and have never needed to pay extra for it.
Hope this helps..
I was looking in the ICS thread and was reading that some ICS user can pick up wifi tether from there android phones and I was hoping someone could tell me how to do so thank you in advance if you can help me
If your android phone is rooted you can download one of many wifi hotspot apps from the market, i.e., Wireless Tether, Barnacle, etc. You can then connect to said hotspot via your KF. If your phone is not rooted look to your providers stock hotspot app, however if you this route you will most likely have to pay an extra premium to use this service.

You can make you phone as a hotspots active if you have data connection agreement with your phone services provider. Check if you have this option in the mobile wireless setting in your smart phone. Please note there is additional cost for data a d you should join a package that fit your need

Hi there,
I have a data plan of 500MB with Rogers Canada (on which tethering is not enabled). When I setup my phone as a wifi hotspot (or USB tether), a computer connects to the phone but there is no internet connection. Is this because tethering is not enabled on my sim card? If yes, how can the provider enforce it and is there a workaround for it?
Thanks for your time.

It's most likely your plan that does not offer tethering.
I am on AT&T, have no problem tethering on a stock job 4.2.2 ROM.
What happens when you enable hotspot on your phone?
Also, have you tried other WiFi tethering apps like foxfi?
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda premium
The connection between the phone and the computer is established but there is no internet connection.
Foxfi doesn't support nexus 4. It force closes when I enable its wifi tethering.

Does anyone of a non root or root wifi tether app that works with the Nexus 5?
I plan to root the phone but I'm still not sure if I want to install another ROM since it is snappy already. ( I usually root to OC and use Wifi Tether )
WiFi hotspot is built into the phone as is. There is no need to install an app.
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
Not necessary as this is built in to stock.
Thanks guys! Yeah I was just wondering...
I don't want AT&T finding out and then charging me the hotspot fee.
is built in tether 100% secure like other apps? i read that built in tether has many security problems!

***Does Not Work on Sprint unless you pay extra***
Where is the icon for it? Or how do I launch it? not seeing it anywhere......
Settings>More>Teathering & portable hotspot.
I`ve tried different roms and my hotspot is not working, is sending me to the t-mobile upsell page.
I have unlimited data with T-Mobile with 2.5 gbs included of hotspot. I already past my hotspot data but still running it. I noticed if I have my APN Protocol IPv4 it let's me use my phone data as a hotspot even after I used up my provided hotspot data. If I switch it to IPv6, it bans me from using my data as a hotspot
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
Okay so pretty much using the built in tether app is a no go. I'm not going to pay for hotspot. If anyone knows of a WiFi tether app that works with nexus 5 let everyone know. (I'm on AT&T). Will be receiving phone first week in Dec.

The built in one doesn't work because it tags all packets with a "hotspot" data tag which is then being denied by your carrier because it's hotspot data which you didn't pay for. Either the internal program needs to be modified to not tag the data, or another app which doesn't tag data should be used to get a free wireless hotspot.

Exactly - this is true for ALL Android handsets running Android 4.3 and above.
Previously, we've been able to get away with it unless your phone was running a carrier-specific ROM with the packet tagging enabled - but now it's part of the Android subsystem.
If your carrier is setup to track this, they now can.
I'm lucky with mine - they seem to only care if I tether a laptop to my phone. If I tether a tablet or another phone, it's fine.. Different traffic I guess! So I just use a VPN on my laptop, and it goes undetected.
Here's a workaround for the uninitiated ones.... Should work on most mobile devices. You'll probably need a VPN if you want to tether a laptop.

Make sure to follow directions closely.
I used a program called SQLite Editor which can be found at the play store. (YOUR PHONE MUST BE ROOTED)
Open SQLite Editor.
Navigate to /data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/
Edit settings.db by adding a line "tether_dun_required" and set the value to "0".
Also make sure your APN settings use IPV4.
I've rebooted my phone after doing this and the edit stuck and tethering worked.
Best of luck!
Excellent man, it worked like a charm, thanks
I solved with this app: WiFi Tether Router
on Google Play store https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.snclab.wifitetherrouter&hl=en
the developer has done a compatible update
I contacted the developer via email and he told me after a few hours
the developer advised me to select these settings
Interface wlan0
Method 0 - Auto
works also with
Interface wlan0
Method 2
this one seems to work for me.. wifi works but i choose to usb tether https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.foxfi&hl=en
also paid version is better then free
I would really like to bypass the T-Mobile 2.5GB limit.
