noob Root - Galaxy Tab 10.1 General

k , now that my Gtab is rooted what else (apps) should I install?

I know when I was into rooting my smart phones there were alot of apps like titanium and root explorer and several other essential ones. But even a game or two would be nice to have . LOL

That depends on why you rooted it. I'm a Linux person, so the first thing I did was to put Busybox on it so I can get a larger range of commands.
Titanium Backup for sure, since that's a great backup/restore tool. But, remember that the "sdcard" in the Gtab isn't removable. If you do backups (nandroid or Ti) you've got to pull them from internal storage in case you've got to recover. (I'm in that state now with a two month old nandroid.) :crying:
Wifi Tether is also another reason to root.

When I root a new device I usually start out by flashing a custom ROM. Then I get the "most-needed" root apps, like Titanium Backup, AdAway, DroidWall, AppAdmin, Voltage Control and Busybox installer. And that's pretty much all I use root for. I might also flash some cool mod, like AC!D Sound or AwesomeBeats, or a custom kernel
As for games, You didn't mention what types You like, but here's a short list of games I enjoy on my Tab:
- Deadtrigger
- ShadowguneadZone
- GTA Vice City
- Great Little War Game
- Great Big War Game
I found Asphalt 7, DeadSpace and MassEffect:Infiltrator to be very laggy...

I would recommend to stay away from sites like that, as they distribute illegal pirated apps, that may (read: most-likely) contain malware. Never use a pirated root-app, as You actually don't know what You give root-access.
Malware with root-access = You're gonna have a bad time !

Apps:
- AdFree
- Lucky Patcher
- Game Cih
- AppAdmin
- SetCpu
- ROM toolbox
- WI-FI tether
- Voltage Control

Games:
- GLWG
- Age of Conquest
- Bike Race
- Dead Trigger
- Tropical Stormfront

Am I a G1 App packrat? 149 Apps, You?

Man I love having everything that could be fun and useful on my G1, so far I am at 149 apps. How many does everyone else have? Also this doesnt hurt the SD card holding all this does it? =/
Anyways last night, some new apps came up like a G1 FTP Server for file transferring. So thats nifty. ConnectBot is good too.
Anyways just wondering, having so many apps, does it slow up the G1 any or can the G1 be like a PPC and handle all this? Open source android is nice but downside is, so many apps that have potential or worth putting on the G1 add up heh.

There is a difference between how many applications you have installed versus how many applications you have running.
I tell people who ask that I have maybe 13k mp3's on my computer and the common response is "omg your computer must be so slow!"
wtf?
Users seem to correlate lots of stuff on device = slow device.
Correlation does not imply causation
Ah while I understand your post, the G1 is a tad different. Afterall the Apps ARE installed to the SD. As you know the G1 itself if "running" too many apps would cause it to lag up. However having alot of apps too I dont know if it slows down the G1 by trying to have it all show up or so. Imagine this. You have EVERYTHING on your Windows Desktop, that has been known to cause slowdowns too, Its not running but the system still maps to it and tracks it so to say.
Plus some apps install and auto run in the background. Since its loading off the SD, depending on the class of your SD it could cause sluggishness I would say.
Not sure what the count is exactly, but I have backups on my sd card, my netbook, and my laptop. Sometimes I download apps, back them up, uninstall and just store them on my comp just incase I might need them someday. Haha

I have ten apps installed.
By the way, while apps that are not running will not cause slowdown perse, some apps start background services or periodic recurring timers (e.g. Loopt, Twidroid) which can cause slowdown.
I have 368 Applications. only problem- HOME SCREEN RELOADS AFTER COMING OUT OF APP
368? WOW You must install everything that sucks too. =p

i have a lot of things. All gameloft games(Bought it from xda user gameloft) all ea games(from handloft.com), Snesoid, Gnesoid, Jrioni terminal(for gp2x), Sim Checker Cupcake, Nesoid,Youtube downloader, Steamy window, Spray can, Meridian, Mechanics TOuch, Military Madness, VNC Viewer, Phone MY PC, IM+, Better Keyboard, Blues etc. These are some of the apps i can remember. I dont install apps that suck . They are 368 +. A week ago with aTrackdog they were 368. I use Swapper, SetCPU to run my phone smoothly. They really help. I have windows X, Debian etc. running too. 1200+ songs, 3+ movies
Swapper, what about the warnings about how bad that actually is?
Also Windows X and Debian, tell me how are those and is there a guide somewhere to get info on it and easy to setup?
Military Madness...? WHERE?! I love games like Battle Isle!
SetCPU tell me about it some, Ive been wondering about it but is OCing really worth it on the G1?
Kk I found a xwindows/debian guide.
http://www.androidfanatic.com/cms/community-forums.html?func=view&catid=9&id=1615
Everything i use is worth using coz i have to use them regularly. About swapper, most SD cards todayhave the power to cover the damage done(most class 6). So its worth. You should have root to enjoy your g1. SETCPU- my g1 is clocked at 528 MHz permanently so i dont experience lag.
Btw as you can tell another point of this thread is to get info on apps. =)
But online, got a link for a good class 6? Ive had issues trying to determine WHICH is a class 6 or what.. Upgraded to a 4GB Sandisk which runs better but I still am not sure its class.
Also Doesnt the setCPU drain your battery more? Any risks on that?
dont worry anout battery it is not much affected
i have about 135 apps
I am very picky about the apps I install on my devices. According to aTrackDog, there are 46 on my G1, but I probably use half of them. Time to do some cleaning

This makes me feel a little better since I only have 314 lol. My ext3 partition is 2GB with Debian installed. No need to really delete anything
How many others here use SetCPU, whats stable, a solid increase and wont hurt the G1 or battery? Also yea, its nice to compare notes heh. Keep installing new apps all the time.
I WISH however that the market was easier to navagate tho.. Like add a "Apps added since you last checked" type of thing or DATE them. "Apps added on "x" date" cause its a pain to track them since looking last with so much junkware being added and your limited to scrolling. =/
atrackdog is least a VERY helpful tool.. if your G1 doesnt know its installed in the market. Least this app does..

Some people still navigate the Market on their phone? I always use Cyrket (Newest Content category seems close to what you're looking for) and then when I find something of interest search for it directly on the phone.
Oh that website is nice, I have seen it, but doesnt help TOO much for installing it to your G1 Not like you can click on the website and have it install to the G1 like Xbox live lol.

What would you like to see in a custom ROM?

As you know, the fact that bootloaders are unlocked leaves an open door for third party firmwares (custom ROMs) to be applied to the phone.
Usually custom ROMs expand the functionalities of the phone and correct some of the software shortcomings. Even though the phone is only recently in the market, there may be some feature wishes and some complaints already.
In short, what features shoud a custom ROM add and what shortcomings should it correct?
I will start:
With the not-so-last gen processor the Play has, it is probably necessary to be able to overclock it.
I would like a minimal ROM (aka without bloatware) as it seems that the booting time of stock ROMs is incredibly high and it is caused by bloatware.
I don't have the phone yet (it's on its way ^^) but I have read things about the brightness setting being too dim and not changeable.

Doesn't sound right. I usually have over 200 free when the phones idle and no where near full when using FPSE etc.
Disable auto brightness and can set it manual (and increase more brightness).

There should be another loader than play, something thats able to load psx, snes, mame (single games) and every other games u installed by opening the pad. With the possibility to add/remove stuff after u install it.
Overclock is mentioned. (Only 1500 in quadrant original??) FPS is okay though.
(I hope wolves - sunderland is canceled, so we have something to look forward too.)

I think he's refering to Internal Storage rather than RAM.
Since we suffer from very low internal storage, it would be great if a new ROM would provide something similar to the app2sd application (forces apps to install all data to SD). Might be a big ask though?

Sure you can move most app data to the SD from settings AFAIK. Bit of a pain though so installing to SD automatically would be nice.

Yuck, I got that wrong I thought app2sd allowed the footprint part of the installation to be mostly moved to SD. Kinda hoped the 30Mb of Asphalt etc cud be reduced to <1Mb or sumthin. Daft now that I think of it.
I agree then, no point in app2sd cuz I manually move the data when I install stuff anyway.
Admin, can someone wipe my replies to this cuz it's only taking up space on what shud be a valuable thread!!
1, faster boot-up time.
2, ability to pick the games you want to have in the games launcher (or a new launcher).
3, widgets from desire.
4, R/L buttons as camera buttons when active.
5, R/L buttons as volume when camera not active, i find the original volume buttons a pain, even more when you have a case/shell on
6, brighter screen for them sunny days.

Nope im talking about ram. If you guys have issues with storage, fire up adb, connect your device. And input.
adb shell
$ pm setinstalllocation2
$ exit
This will force all apps to be allowed to install to the sd card, and games like ashpalt take less than a mb

App2EXT
As I hate the original android app2sd... as all widgets get broken by this method...
From what I've heard, since Verizon has fallen asleep.
1. Bare bone rom. Like to where you have to install gapps and other stuff. Only to have the apps android comes with.
2. R1 as take picture and L1 as focus.
3. Ability to add any shortcut to the "game app," forgot what it was called. Whether it be a app or game.
4. No overclock applied. Let the user add a overclocking app if they want.
5. Power control widget in the status bar.
6. And supper user of coarse

i want a stock android tbh, STOCK; and of-course, an overclocking module
id love an option to disable data traffic automatically when the phones screen is turned off, if this could be built into a custom stock gingerbread rom. the reason that would be awsome is cause it would double your batterylife and save using a widget and having to manually turn it on and off wasting time.
also R1 for taking picture and L1 for focus
having a battery percentage in the status bar would be amazing ( i know theres apps to do this but again if it was built in the rom as stock)
I would love a better keyboard, i came from an iphone and androids keyboard is just not accurate enough.
thanks in advance whoever takes the time to make this possible i understand it takes alot of time and effort to help others but rest assured it also makes many people happy . I wish sony would have released this phone in a more polished state it feels half finished and fragmented with all the apps and games markets

Just a few questions from a new SGS2 owner

Hello everyone.
I just gave my beloved HD2 after almost 2 years and decided to move on to Galaxy s2.
What i would like to ask is:
What do you suggest to do on my sgs2?
I mean things like rooting and overclocking, apps and tweaks?
Everything is welcome.
Thanks !

Welcome mate i too am coming from a HD2, it was a superb phone and served me well for a year and a half but the GS2 is unbeatable
I would definitely root your phone, there is so much you CANT DO if you don't, it's entirely up to you if you flash a custom ROM as the stock ROM is good but personally i run Cognition 1.15 and this is definitely one of the best there is for the GS2, do a search on this forum for tips and tricks, superior battery life can be achieved if you follow a few tips given, set CPU is recommended but not totally required, calibrate your battery and download some apps like Battery Monitor, juice defender plus, system panel, CPU spy, root explorer, titanium backup most are paid apps but well worth getting especially Titanium backup and root explorer.
If you've any more questions ask away people on here generally are friendly and helpful.
Lol was something i was going to ask.also just got my s2 & also just come from my hd2.loving the speed of this machine and not customized it yet.

rooting it would be a good idea,,if u want to do stuff besides normal....and there is no need to overclock,,,,i dont think there is anything on android that this beast cant handle(1.2 Ghz dual core is more than enough for now),,people are under clocking this device to get better battery life,,,As for apps,it depends upon ur usage(if u r into ebook reading, download ezpdf reader,,if u r into mobile gaming,go to the gameloft website for hd games or market for normal ones,,etc,etc)....and for tweaks ,just search this forium,,u ll find a lot of useful stuff,,,
Godspeed.
Thanks for your replies guys!
Till now i have installed:
adobe reader
alarm clock plus
angry birds
antennas
antivirus
apps2sd (like i'm going to use it... uninstalled!)
battery monitor widget pro
beautiful widgets
compass
electrodroid
equalizer
es file explorer
flashlight alerts
gps status
gps test
greek eortologio (widget rocks)
launcher pro plus (looooooove it)
minimalistic text
miren browser
moboplayer (kinda reminds me of KMplayer)
network info II
phoneUsage (rocks too!)
phono
photoshop express
quick settings
quick pic
ringdroid
root check 2.8 (and it says that i dont have root )
smart keyboard pro
task manager
unistaller
winamp
x construct (my favourite)
I checked the forum and i couldnt find a step-by-step guide to root the sgs2 (woa! i feel like the first time i flashed a custom WM rom on my hd2! )
Could someone please point a guide?
Thanks again!
Once you root, I suggest you install these Root enabled apps:
1. MarketEnabler
2. Adfree
3. Root Explorer
4. Titanium Backup
Also these non-root apps are great:
ZDbox
1Password
iSyncr (to properly copy music including all ID3 tags)
MediaFix (incase any tags are still shown as "unknown")
I have many of those apps too.
Search mate there are a few different threads on rooting here is one.

I dont know the difference. The android roms i had on my HD2 were already rooted
You gain a roted phone and can choose your rom use rooted apps etc .
Or choose a custom rom from dev section with inbuilt root .

Can i use chainfire3D on sgs2 or it causes problems on stock android?
rooting for sure since its easy. overclock not really needed, its so fast anyway

Recommend some please!

I do stuff with my play I can't describe on this board O.O
best things to do imo would be:
install .62 firmware
unlock bootloader(pay if u must)
install doomkernal, oc to 1.5ghz and undervolt to close to stock voltage.
install link2sd and titanium backup.
create an ext3/4 partition on ur sd card and configure link2sd to autolink to it.
install widgetsoid 2.x or something else which gives u notification toggles.
dump some roms to ur sd card
install mupen64/fpse/md.emu/neodroid/snes9x ex +others if u want.

Everything you could do with your old android you can do with the play. Its an android.
You can also use the gamepad to play a few thousand games, same games as your other android except with the gamepad.
Also all the things like bootloader unlocking etc etc are not needed to enjoy this android phone.
If you wanted anything more beyond that then sorry, you went from android to android.
Lol this ain't an iPhone where you're given a little sandbox to play in, but not outside of... this is Android, meaning that its not a matter of "what can you do", it's "what do you want to do?"

Sorry, that was my attempt at humor. In all seriousness though, I would atleast put the camera mod on it, so you can use the "R" bumper to take pictures, but if your gonna throw a custom ROM on it, most ROMs have that mod included already, then throw the notification toggle mod on. Its really hard to make a list for you, cause it really depends on what your into.

Dude, this is an all-rounder, it's got anything you'd ever want from it.
A LED flash camera (torch), HD video recording, LED notification, nice screen (coming from SGS), stereo speakers, 2 microphones (for better call quality), good battery (if you get the .36 baseband), great music, it's Playstation certified WITH gamepad AND touchpad, GREAT GPS (Glonas stuff, google it) ... and the piece de resistance... it's an Android.
Think of all the possibilities... the sky is the limit!
P.S.: I love this old phone... it might not be the Galaxy Note in terms of performance, but i use it more than i would've used a Galaxy Note.

After newly installed And 11, my phone froze

I downloaded the file on Tuesday and the phone has been working great. FYI, there is a wipe involved with the download. There's no warning before the fact it's during the setup.
Anyway, the phone has been great but last night, while charging, I noticed that the charging percentage and the time were not changing and the phone froze. My first freeze ever with any phone. The only thing I could think of was to hold the power button. After 4-5 , power button holds it recycled and came back.
One thing I noticed is that the phone, while charging, was warmer than usual and historically this phone doesn't get warm or hot.
Just a heads up, I may set up a chat with Oneplus just to see what they say

After chatting with OP , the cache clearing so far has helped.

To name a few:
Backing up and restoring apps and their data as they are.
Proper ad blocking system wide.
Modifying the phone: centre clock, removing zram.
Magisk mods
Root apps like WiFi kill, Kali, system UI tuner
Kernels
Magisk ROMs
Full ROMs
I couldn't have an android phone without rooting. I've lived with a Huawei so I know how dull it gets.

On the routing your making me curious-
Backing up and restoring apps and their data as they are.- not sure what this does
Proper ad blocking system wide.- add blocking where, Google, Facebook etc?
Modifying the phone: centre clock, removing zram.- I'm ok with the clock, what is zram?
Magisk mods- have never used them, but back in the day when I had my Note 4 there was a cool prgram for rooting that had all kinds of mods and tools
Root apps like WiFi kill, Kali, system UI tuner- not sure how that benefits me
Kernels- not sure what they do
Magisk ROMs- I see them here talked about alot
Full ROMs- When I had my Note 4 I tried roms all the time. They were cool but there was always some kind of bugginess about them
Since my Note 4, I've been out of the rooting game.

Titanium can back up or remove any app as it is. If you remove let's say a game you'll lose all progress unless you have a sync feature.
The only add blocking you can have without root is using a fake VPN, it's overkill and not as efficient at removing ads. And yes ads from the whole device and all apps.
Zram ? Google it.
Magisk - yes the mod is magisk.
Not sure how they benefit you? I'm losing the will to live here, they were examples, you find what you need.
Kernels - Google it
Note 4 I had it myself, some of the absolute worst examples of ROMs on XDA.
You crack on at stock you seem happier there.
It was just a suggestion. Nvm

Thanks for writing back. For me I'm a performance junky. I'm not a gamer just a surfer that wants a high octane machine, if possible. Does rooting do that? I remember Titanium from the past , good tool and you have to be careful is what I remember.

Nah titanium is safe.
Does rooting help with speed, I would say so yes, I've made a phone run an emulator it had no business running..
Mainly through zram being disabled and having a kernel that allows a higher clock speed, plus the ROM I was running being as light and efficient as possible..
Stock simply cannot compare with that.
Everyone on here wants the fastest phone, the 865 in the 8 pro is the fastest processor there is..it's quicker than the Nvidia shield pro which I have, it can run things that the shield can't..
Performance isn't an issue with way, but yes being rooted opens doors that just don't exist for stock.
To play devil's advocate on the rooting thing...
I've been doing the android thing since gingerbread (good 7+ years). Back then it was an absolute MUST. These days not so much.
Most of the reasons to root back then was to add features that weren't available in Android stock ROMs at the time.
Let me give you some CONs to rooting before you jump into it...if these don't apply then have at it and have fun. It's fairly easy to do on this phone and once you have TWRP up and running you can pretty much revert any screw up and get your phone back up and running and have fun with tinkering.
1.) Do you enjoy Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, YouTube TV (TV service not YouTube app), or any other app that requires Winevine DRM encryption? OnePlus devices drop from L1 to L3 once you unlock the bootloader (requirement for root). Those apps will now all be at 480P 30FPS instead of 720p/1080p or 60 FPS. Total deal breaker for me watching sports on the road need the 60 FPS.
2.) Do you like to use GPay? It can work but it's a cat/mouse game with Google Play Services.
3.) It's fun theming with Substratum but every time there's an app update you have to hope it doesn't bork the theme. Gotta install an OTA? Disable all your modules, uninstall your themes, flash, and then re-enable. Tedious. Maybe I"m getting older but wife, kids, family stuff I don't want to be messing around with all this?
4.) Want ad-blocking? Blokada works excellent. I have an old rooted tablet (Tab S3) and it uses AdAway. Both effectively block my ads. Also I run a personal VPN at my house with PiHole so I can block that way too by connecting to my home VPN on the road.
5.) Swift Backup will backup most of your apps without root. It'll restore them without data. I've never in the 7 years of messing with Android had a perfect 1:1 restore with TWRP and Titanium Backup.. There's always little things that act up. Not a deal breaker these days missing Titanium Backup. Especially when not root and constantly mucking with the system it's usually pretty rock solid not requiring a constant TWRP/Titanium solution.
6.) Most praise Viper4Android. Great app. Stock it sounds fine for portable use. No phone DAC is going to compete with dedicated equipment so you're basically polishing a turd. There's better equipment out there to get solid audio. Phone isn't one of them.
7.) I haven't looked into rooting this phone for months so my last point is dated and I believe there is a fix but last i checked (once again a few months back haven't been on XDA for a bit) there were some serious fingerprint loss when unlocking the bootloader and then trying to relock or use MSMTool to go back to stock.

1- L1 remains after rooting
2- Gpay works as it should after rooting
3- Substratum theme dont break anything at least the ones I use
4- best seems Adaway - needs root
5- to save /data TWRP, fastest and easiest. Oneplus backup not bad
6- viper4android, that requires Root makes the sound much better on this phone
7- I never faced the fingerprints loss and anyway there is fix on the threads

I was literally about to say all of this. +1111111
Spot on.
Weird thing for me these days is not needing twrp, it's always been my safety net, but it's just not needed these days, if they ever get rid of Fastboot then it's game over, I'll be buying an iPhone.
The great thing about OOS and magisk ROMs is it retains the goodness from stock and gives you the tweaks systemlessly. Which is nice and safety net passes.
I agree with all of the above.
But either way @ the OP you do you, I'll do me.
PS: I've been doing the android thing since the G1 which was doughnut I think it was it cupcake?
If something is a risk to you then you haven't looked into it enough, there is always a way back, which is where you learn the most about yourself and your device.

You're making a good case for me to try it. What are the ABC's to get into rooting slowly and notice a difference?
Thanks for your help!
