I just spoke to my brother in law who has an iPhone 5 on Fido (both of which support HD voice) and the call quality was really good.
...I mean REALLY GOOD.
And I'm on Rogers with my Nexus 4, so I guess it DOES support HD Voice, as long as your carrier supports it. I'm not sure, but I think you also have to be on the same nework - since Rogers owns Fido, I guess it's the same.

Once the call reaches pstn, then PCMU audio (standard voice) is transmitted. So the only way HD voice call works is within network.
To my knowledge, Vonage mobile to Vonage mobile calls use g722 codec, which is HD audio. If you wonder the HD voice quality, try vonage mobile within network calls.

Hey,
i waited till the release of the 32GB version of the Nexus 7.On the official Google Blog i have read: "Nexus 7 with 32GB and mobile data: $299 and unlocked, on sale 11/13 in the Google Play store in the U.S., U.K., Australia, France, Germany, Spain and Canada."
Now my question is, what do they mean with "unlocked"? Fully rooted? That would be awesome!
Hope you can help me!
Greetz
I'm sure they mean, not carrier specific. its compatible with 200+ carriers worldwide.

You think so?
But what do you mean with carrier specific? Could you explain a bit more?
It is NOT carrier specific... meaning it isn't LOCKED to any specific carrier... aka it isn't branded... and it doesn't require 2yr contracts to get it for that price.
It means you pay $300 and can pop in any SIM card from any GSM carrier and go to town.

They mean unlocked as in you can use it with whatever SIM card you wanted on whatever network. As long as it is GSM of course. (LTE uses SIM even though some are CDMA based)
If it were "locked" we had to buy it from a mobile carrier as Vodafone, T-Mobile etc including a contract for 1-2 years.
Can you make calls with this or are you limited to data only? I'm also assuming this is penta band.
Data only, but there's so many ways to make voice calls online.
Thanks for every answer.Hope they will get it on amazon.de early as possible.:fingers-crossed:
Does this HSPA+ support Dual Carrier 4G?

Yeah, but easiest way, like a smartphone, would be fine ?
We now have in France, for less than 20€, full plans (3Gb fair use, unlimited MMS/SMS and unlimited phone calls). The right plan to put in a Nexus7 HSDPA !
If the Nexus7 HSDPA has capability to phonecalls like the former GalaxyTab7" or 7,7", i would replace one of my Note1 with this one !

According to everything I've found, the Nexus 7 is NOT a telephone. If you want to make voice calls you will need to use a voip service like Skype. Jellybean does have a phone app hidden away (for the Nexus 4) But I'm pretty sure if you brought it up on a Nexus 7 and tried to use it, it would either hang or make an error.
You know those portable 3g/4G routers you can buy and put a sim in? It's just like having that built in to your tablet.

My biggest question is how accessable the SIM card is....
I read in a Verge posting that it will ship with your choice of T-MO or AT&T SIM preinstalled (for USA)- does this mean we won't be able to (easily) change it?
T-MO has simple and flexible monthly 4G plan options, for cheap. I don't know what AT&T has in comparison, but the only reason I personally would go with AT&T is wider coverage.

The radio isn't 4G compatible; more of a "3.5G". It will work with 3G stuff, but not 4G apparently. Kinda strange Google didn't just jump right to 4G, if they were gonna do this at all... still, pretty awesome.

Curious to know... Source please ?
Can't wait to get me hands on one of these... we're still chugging along with a mix of 2G and 3G here in India. So this would be perfect. Our data plans are pretty cheap and contacts with cellular companies are almost unheard of...
Wonder is this will work with all the 3G carriers in India?
So, to repop the question...Can anyone confirm or deny if the Nexus7 HSPA version has the capability of being used as a phone for making regular voice calls?
I'm not sure if this is possible yet, but how do we get wi-fi calling onto the N4? I am on T-Mobile and am interested in using this feature since my reception at my apartment is not the best. I bought my N4 from the google play store if that matter.
Everything that I've seen so far says no, it does not have wifi calling. Sorry
There is no support for tmobiles Wi-Fi calling. However, there are several apps like grooveip which do the same thing and work well. They integrate with Google voice.

I don't have my N4 yet -- still stuck in Play Store limbo -- but I've been testing GrooVe IP on my LG G2x in anticipation and have been very pleased with it. It definitely has better call quality than wifi calling.
Thanks guys, I'll check out grooveip in that case!
Have y'all been using GrooveIP with just wifi or have you tried 3g as well? I tried it over 3g with my old Infuse but it was horrible. Hoping that if it's better with 3g I could switch back to t-mobile again.
My problem with is with Google voice. I don't want to use something else for WiFi calling that uses Google voice. Right now I have Google voice on my Epic 4G (virgin mobile) and it is awful for texts. I don't know how people can stand it. I would definitely pay for t mobile WiFi calling. If we don't have it ill probably do att straight talk for the signal. Would prefer T-Mobile value plan with WiFi calling to get good signal everywhere the is WiFi and the faster 3G speed.

Just over wifi (I have the free version for testing, which only supports wifi). When my N4 arrives, I'll probably buy the paid version and at least try out the cell connection.
Just read this on Engadget a minute ago: http://www.engadget.com/2013/01/08/t-mobile-claims-to-be-first-us-carrier-with-hd-voice-calling-nat/
I was wondering if anybody knows if our Nexus 4's support this or not?
Wondering the same as it is a official TMo 4G phone.
I read on the verge it was only the gs3 and the One S.
I do remember someone on this forum a few days ago mention they had HD voice with the N4 in Europe.
EDIT: Here's a blurb from T-Mobile's press release. http://newsroom.t-mobile.com/articles/t-mobile-network-advancements?utm_source=TMOTW&utm_medium=CESPR&utm_campaign=1082013
T-Mobile today announced that HD Voice is now available on its network nationwide, dramatically improving in-call voice quality for customers with capable smartphones. Customers will hear a more true-to-life voice quality that’s fuller and more natural-sounding with significantly reduced background noise from street traffic, wind and crowd noise. To experience HD Voice, both parties on the call must use capable T-Mobile 4G smartphones such as the HTC One™ S, Nokia Astound and Samsung Galaxy S® III on T-Mobile’s HD Voice-enabled nationwide network. T-Mobile is the first U.S. wireless provider to launch HD Voice nationwide.

Looks like it only works between compatible phones on T-Mobile's network. Kind of lame...
People in Europe said it worked when they called an S3, so there isn't anything stopping it from working here I think. Should just be a matter of T-Mo turning it on, which they say they've done. I don't know anyone with a supported phone on T-Mo to test it with, though.
If you have a friend with an S3 or One S on T-Mo, a good test would be to call them back-to-back with someone who doesn't have a supported device and report back.
What is the special capability these phones have that the Nexus 4 doesn't have? Is T-Mobile blowing smoke?

They make more money selling them? They aren't going to list every single supported device in the press release.

your device has to support it. i havent heard anything about n4 support
I've yet to read an official list.
Reading this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1963885
Some people claim that the DSP and baseband chips in the Nexus 4 would support the proper codec for this to work... but it would also take the network supporting it (which should be the case for T-Mobile US now and the ROM must support it.
Further, sjgore from UK and computerdan from Toronto both say that it is working for them on their cellular networks.
Does anyone have a way for me to test it? T-Mobile said they are rolling out HD Voice nationwide today and I'm covered by HSPA. I have two Nexus 4s,so I just need to know how to test for you guys.

I have a Nexus 4 and so does my wife, both of us are covered by HSPA+ and running stock ROMs. We haven't noticed any difference yet when talking to each other.
It should support HD
Judging by this thread, it should work without a problem.

To test HD Voice
1. Have someone use your other Nexus 4.
2. Call him on your Nexus 4.
3. Play a 6kHz or 7kHz tone on your computer speakers (should be able to find this on the Internet)
4. Hold your Nexus 4 up to the speakers. See if he can hear it.
5. Repeat the same experiment, but this time use your landline or another cell phone to call him.
Standard phones have a 4kHz cutoff frequency, HD Voice has an 8kHz cutoff frequency.
I was on the rom CM10.1.(2 or 3) latest stable.
My friends were complaining about my phone quality who some have all carriers, Sprint, AT&T, and Verizon. Some phones they were using were Motorola RAZER V3, Galaxy S3, Note 2, Note 3, iPhone 4s, iPhone 5s, and HTC EVO 3D. When I hear them it is crystal clear but when I talk it all muffled. I called myself from google voice and as far as I could tell I sounded clear.
I've tested physical mic quality and it sounds fine (with a sound recorder app)
I switched over to an odexed 4.3 stock rom with root & busybox then proceeded to update my radio the lastest .84 or something.
How can I fix this?
Edit. I have T-Mobile
switch to a different carrier?
im using tmobile, which has "HD" phone calls available to phones that support it, and the nexus 4 does, and phone calls are loud and crystal clear.

I've tried in areas where I get good signal and bad signal, seems all bad, I've also tried roaming to AT&T and it still seems to be bad
Even though the 6p supports the Verizon bands, but I wonder will it ever support advanced calling? I'm one of those people who needs to be able to surf the web and talk on the phone simultaneously. Do anyone possibly have info on if Verizon will truly support this phone? I still feel some kind of way that Verizon never sent the update to nexus 6 or iPhone 6 for the phones to be able to use hd video calling. ****ing verizon
