Galaxy Note to Work on T-Mobile USA by Year's END!!

I just came across this article and for anyone stuck on AT&T or an AT&T's prepaid MVNO here is proof we might not need to suffer that much longer! Keep in mind the iPhone has the same HSPA bands as our Galaxy Note, so for our sake just replace any reference to the iPhone with the Galaxy Note and you will get the picture.
A bunch of my friends have T-Mobile faux-4G and it blows my AT&T 3G out of the water for speed. Plus, they have very attractive prepaid plans.

That's reassuring. Plus the possibility that devs will be able to get 1700 working on the radio by using a T mobile modem?
I'm about ready to cancel my Sprint and by the int'l Note. But I'm just a bit learry about being locked into att, as some say it's not great in my area (SC). It would great to use both ST (both att and t mob) as well as t mob plans.
Should I take the plunge, or get the pentaband Gnexus?
I'll also be new to the prepaid game and leary about porting my number. I read it might be easy to port to GV? I guess we loose MMS, but google is working on it? Or is it easier to just port to ST this month... then t mobile next month?

I made the move from Sprint to T-Mobile back in March. I'm holding out for getting this working on T-Mobile's bands but if not, I'll just switch to ST when this plan runs out in a few weeks.
You can contact T-Mobile to ask about porting your # from Sprint, should be fine as long as you're up to date with Sprint.
Since the 30$ plan I'm on only includes 100mins, I use GV in conjunction with sipdroid/Pbxes.org for sip voip data calls.
MMS is not available with GV - yet.
I use my GV # for public and my actual T-Mobile # only my SO has.
I would suggest to you that you just order a ST prepaid 45$/mo SIM, though. You'll be limited to 2gb/mo but will have HSPA+ connectivity and unlimited minutes. You also won't then need to use a GV # unless you want to.

Yea, that 1700mhz thread has been going strong. Hopefully one way or another we can have the option to use one or the other.
I ported twice in the past 2/3 years from T-Mobile->Page Plus (Verizon MVNO) -> Straight Talk and the most annoying port was by far the ST one. It literally took me 3 weeks and their CS is terrible!

I have had AT&T here since January and I have enjoyed the phone coverage because I get service indoors better than I did with T-Mobile (was with them for 6 years) but I enjoy T-Mobile's 3.5G speeds (much faster than AT&T 3G here) I guess it will come down to timing/pricing plans/my needs.
But choices are always good! *Fingers Crossed*

I was on a T-Mobile prepaid for a while and then I got the Note and wanted to be able to actually use it so I switched to Straight Talk and actually I had no problem with porting my number. I had a hold up on entering the account PIN basically because I forgot what I made it, but other than that once I figured out what it was they were able to have my number ported in a few hours.

Lack of international phone support was one of the biggest reason for me switching from Tmobile to AT&T after being their customer for almost 10 years. It seems like out of the three major carriers, Tmobile has the worst phone selection and Tmobile subscribers are stuck with this due to their weird 3G/4G bands.

I'm not surprised for every story like mine that there would be 10 that went just fine.
But, I had to get 3 sims sent to me and every time they told me the same thing "you need a new sim card" even though I was already on my third. I had to go up two levels before I got someone who could fix it and by then it was 3 weeks later. Needless to say, I wouldn't recommend ST to a friend merely because of that whole fiasco.

I wouldn't get too excited just yet. They don't seem to be saying what a 'large number of markets' means. It certainly doesn't mean their entire network by the looks of things.

Yeah, who knows Tmobile may already have a GNote or GS3 by then, making this whole thing somewhat moot.

We have already seen a tmobile gnote. Was in the news a week or two ago. Nothing official of course, but seems like they'll have it soon. I bet they are just waiting for ICS to get wrapped up before release.

Good question. I'm not sure if it would be transferable, though to be honest there are some very smart people here, so I would bet that it's possible.
I wonder if they will go with the Exynos or the Snapdragon and if they might upgrade either of them i.e. Exynos Quad or Snapdragon S4, that would be sweeeet!

I'm curious about how your are doing this and how well it works. I use to use Gizmo5 but after Google bought them I stopped using SIP. I currently use Skype, I did not like the delay I was experiencing with GrooveIP. I assume GV forwards calls to Pbxes.org and Sipdroid routes out going calls to Pbxes.org.
Are you on the free plan? Do I read correctly, it's 2000 minutes of bandwidth and 60 outbound?

Judging by the NFC chip on the supposed T-Mobile Note, it's most likely the i717 with different modem software, so it won't really help N7000 users.

Works well enough, calls auto kill upon 60mins. I feel like I use more than 2k a month but I'm not sure. Yes, I'm on the free plan.
Calls are routed from my GV/Google Talk to Pbxes.org, sipdroid is the client I use to connect. Requires me to be logged into Google Talk and online.

Hey,
i waited till the release of the 32GB version of the Nexus 7.On the official Google Blog i have read: "Nexus 7 with 32GB and mobile data: $299 and unlocked, on sale 11/13 in the Google Play store in the U.S., U.K., Australia, France, Germany, Spain and Canada."
Now my question is, what do they mean with "unlocked"? Fully rooted? That would be awesome!

I'm sure they mean, not carrier specific. its compatible with 200+ carriers worldwide.

It is NOT carrier specific... meaning it isn't LOCKED to any specific carrier... aka it isn't branded... and it doesn't require 2yr contracts to get it for that price.
It means you pay $300 and can pop in any SIM card from any GSM carrier and go to town.

They mean unlocked as in you can use it with whatever SIM card you wanted on whatever network. As long as it is GSM of course. (LTE uses SIM even though some are CDMA based)

If it were "locked" we had to buy it from a mobile carrier as Vodafone, T-Mobile etc including a contract for 1-2 years.

Can you make calls with this or are you limited to data only? I'm also assuming this is penta band.

Data only, but there's so many ways to make voice calls online.

We now have in France, for less than 20€, full plans (3Gb fair use, unlimited MMS/SMS and unlimited phone calls). The right plan to put in a Nexus7 HSDPA !
If the Nexus7 HSDPA has capability to phonecalls like the former GalaxyTab7" or 7,7", i would replace one of my Note1 with this one !

According to everything I've found, the Nexus 7 is NOT a telephone. If you want to make voice calls you will need to use a voip service like Skype. Jellybean does have a phone app hidden away (for the Nexus 4) But I'm pretty sure if you brought it up on a Nexus 7 and tried to use it, it would either hang or make an error.
You know those portable 3g/4G routers you can buy and put a sim in? It's just like having that built in to your tablet.

I read in a Verge posting that it will ship with your choice of T-MO or AT&T SIM preinstalled (for USA)- does this mean we won't be able to (easily) change it?
T-MO has simple and flexible monthly 4G plan options, for cheap. I don't know what AT&T has in comparison, but the only reason I personally would go with AT&T is wider coverage.

The radio isn't 4G compatible; more of a "3.5G". It will work with 3G stuff, but not 4G apparently. Kinda strange Google didn't just jump right to 4G, if they were gonna do this at all... still, pretty awesome.

Can't wait to get me hands on one of these... we're still chugging along with a mix of 2G and 3G here in India. So this would be perfect. Our data plans are pretty cheap and contacts with cellular companies are almost unheard of...
Wonder is this will work with all the 3G carriers in India?

Hello all. I am really looking forward to the new Nexus 4 as is everyone else :laugh:. The only question I have, and it's a biggie for me, will there be a wifi calling app for the play store version of the phone. I assume that there will be one for the Tmobile store bought version, but where I live I get little to no cell service. I use the wifi calling anytime I am at the house therefore I need it. I would like to buy the phone from the play store because my contract isn't up soon. If not is it possible that an apk could be made to just flash into the phone's software? Maybe I'm just rambling on here, but I am just happy to see a new Nexus phone. :good::good:

AFAIK wifi calling has not even been confirmed, although it would be strange for a tmo device to lack it. They cannot provide this through the app store due to the complexity and low level nature of it, but it can be flashed if tmo makes it available on their own devices.
I think there are two possibilities:
1 its likely to come on tmo carrier devices sold at subsidy or through tmo, and unlikely to come on play store devices.
2 It is possible that the Nexus 4 will not have wifi calling support at all.
Either way I wouldnt expect wifi calling out of the box with a play store device.
This is not something that can be modded. The galaxy nexus still has no wifi calling support.

True, but if they add it to the models sold via Tmo it might be easy to port into roms for the Play Store variety as well.

chat support told me yesterday that the one from the tmobile store would have wifi calling.

Thanks for all the replies everyone. I can only hope that it does have it. I realy enjoy being able to rely on my internet rather than mobile service. Where I live I can only get 1 or two bars of service, so you can imagine that without wifi calling I cant even order a pizza. Ironly of it is that I live on a road named Tower Rd. due to the fact there are several cell towers built on the top of a mountain, and yet I still get no service.

T-Mobile WiFi Calling its not just an app, it needs a combination of Kernel and Radio protocols that WOULD require T-Mobile to have to re-write some of the software in it (witch I think they should since they are probably gonna have higher prices on the device any way ) but it really seems that google made a push for untouched software all across the Nexus 4 line

Why not use a third party app for wifi calling I use it on my GNote10.1 and it works quite well?

I think s.b. on G+ said T-Mobile had contributed stuff for Wi-Fi calling to AOSP; but I never checked the validity of his statement.

Really ??? Where did you see that ? We could definitely use that as a start to build our own !

With a combination of csipsimple app, free sipgate.com account, and google voice, you can do free wifi calling both send and receive from any android, doesn't even need to be activated. I have an old and slow htc hero I keep around as a spare that even works decently for wifi calling. I'm not going to write a guide on how to do this, but plenty of others already have.

It is all basically software. Just take a look at the HTC HD2 with Android, a WinMo phone that has Android T-Mobile wifi calling thanks to XDA developers. Perhaps the libs/apks from other phones can just be copied over and it would work.

I just spoke to my brother in law who has an iPhone 5 on Fido (both of which support HD voice) and the call quality was really good.
...I mean REALLY GOOD.
And I'm on Rogers with my Nexus 4, so I guess it DOES support HD Voice, as long as your carrier supports it. I'm not sure, but I think you also have to be on the same nework - since Rogers owns Fido, I guess it's the same.

Once the call reaches pstn, then PCMU audio (standard voice) is transmitted. So the only way HD voice call works is within network.
To my knowledge, Vonage mobile to Vonage mobile calls use g722 codec, which is HD audio. If you wonder the HD voice quality, try vonage mobile within network calls.

Any aussies on XT905 and Optus 4G?

Any Aussies here with a Telstra XT905 but on Optus and with 4G active?
I'm finding with 4G active I get intermittent signal dropouts - it will go from even 5 bars to none then re-connect shortly. This is intermittent and random, I don't know how often its really happening unless I just happen to see it when I've got the screen on. I started noticing it as it seems to drop voice calls when it happens, normally doesn't kick in on a voice call until >5 minutes.
If I turn off 4G all is fine.
I tried freezing modem fast dormancy and modem stats service as it seemed to be triggering lots of wakelocks, but that didn't affect it.
I'm feeling dumb now signing up for another year and enabling 4G, could have kept trucking on my cheaper non 4G plan lol (and be coming out of contract around now!).
Note I'm on Optus, i have no idea if this happens if I am Telstra. The problem is too intermittent for me to pop in a temporary Telstra SIM and notice it (as I don't want my 'real' number to be offline for more than a short duration). I'm hoping it is indeed carrier related (i.e. so problem is fixed if I go back to Telstra, as opposed to hardware issue). Its intermittent enough so that its impossible to demonstrate in a store, and further I've unlocked/rooted so there goes my warranty anyway!

I'm the only one? Even if you don't have any issues w/ Optus 4G pls let me know so I can distinguish between a phone issue and a general Optus 4G compatibility issue.
3G appears rock solid, switched back to it (battery life FTW) and no issues again.

Telstra marketing and exclusive really hurt this phone. Nobody knows it exists but when they see it they want one as it's got all the high end goodies just not gigantic sized

Not sure if I agree. We've all purchased this "niche" phone so it has a market, but Motorola phones are generally not anywhere near as popular as say SG3 or the like.
Personally I've always used Moto phones since I had the Moto Z6, what a beast! Best sound on a phone ever (ok may of that generation!).
A lot of ppl got put off by the allegedly crappy screen and price.
