Found an annoyance today .. LOUD touchtones while using speakerphone!! - Galaxy Note II General

While on a tech support call today I place the GN2 on the desk and used speaker phone. It works great, but when having to make in call menu selections using the keypad the touchtones are VERY LOUD !!!!! I have turned off all key tones that I can find , but no success. Any fixes?

These are called DTMF tones, they're standard sounds used by touch tone phones to broadcast menu choices to phone systems like the one you called (among other things - they are also used for dialing). If you turned them off then you wouldn't be able to navigate through those menus. The only advice I can give you is to turn your call volume down while you're making selections so they're not so loud.

How to key in command digit to generate DTMF during a call?

I am using Wizard with WM5.0. The phone software is the default one.
When you dial a service hotline, you normally hear the voice prompt: "English Press 1, French press 2"... How to press the 1 and send the DTMF touch tone over to the service provider? I tried press 1 but there is no DTMF tone generated?
Thanks in advance for anyone who can answer my question.
Strange - it's working (and has always worked with all the ROM's) great with my Wizard. In addition, Menu / Options /Phone / Keypad doesn't have any effect on what is sent out to the other party.
Try doing this with as many DTMF-based services as possible to find out whether it's a problem with the particular service you've called up or a generic one.
In the phone app, you should press "keypad" button to bring back the phone keys during the call to generate DTMF.
Hi, Menneisyys,
I have tried to call two different hotline. I failed to get throught the first question such as : "Press 1 for English, Press 2 for French...". It seems that these two service provider do not have problem as I can call them by my land wired phone.
Hi, micvario,
Yes, I am able to go to the Keypad. But pressing any digits does not send any thing to the hotline...
Very strange....
Hi, when you use the keypad, do digits appear on the screen and can you also hear the tones from the speaker? If so, I suspect the problem may be with the signal quality..
Hi, micvario,
Yes. The digit appear on screen and there is tone from the speaker....
ok,
1) you can call your own landline to listen if tones are really transmitted
2) check signal strenght; i guess if its zero or one bar only, you may not notice in speech but it could be a problem for tone processing at the other end... try to increase and try again..
3) if there are loud background sounds like music, traffic, this may also interfere with the tones..
Hi, micvario,
I made a mistake last time.... (Haven't try this for a few days).
When I press "1", "2".... during a call, I can't hear any DTMF tone generated.
Is mostly a hardware error or software error?
Thanks

I'm having the same problem
I'm having the same problem. Since I'm using PV4 when I press the keypad I can hear the tone, but no DTMF are sent to the other side of the line.
No DTMF during call
I'm having the same problem. I can hear the tones and the numbers are displayed but not sent across the line. So, I can't delete voice mail. HELP! I also had some one on a voice call tell me they couldn't hear the tones.
Anything further on this? I have the same problem on my desire z. Can hear the tone on my end but no recognition on the receiving end...

Busy tone - turns speaker on

Anyone has the same problem???
When calling someone whos already on the phone, I get the usual busy tone - but on the Vario II's speaker (loud) (like it turns the speaker on automatically,... weird) Its annoying if I want to make a quite call at the office!
Yep, I get that as well! Effin' annoying it is as well when you've got the unit to your ear
I had this same issue once. I am using a HTC branded TyTN. My normal network is Cingular in the US, and I do not get this issue when using my Cingular SIM. I was recently in Singapore using a SingTel SIM, and the busy tone would come out the speaker. When I switched to a M1 SIM (also in Singapore, blasted SingTel does not allow data on prepaid!), I did not have the problem anymore. I also did not have this when using SMART prepaid in Manila or when using DTAC prepaid in Thailand. Also, I was using the stock TyTN ROM at the time. I have since switched to 1.35, but I have not had a chance to travel yet to see if the new ROM fixes the issue.
Same here. Really annoying.
Any solutions, guys?
Here is a fix, HKEY_CURRENT_USER/ControlPanel/Sounds/BusyTone and change the wavfile for a quieter one, I use the busytone.wav file which i think gets installed withe skype ( i am not quite sure where it is originally from, just found it in my windows directory).
Or you can just remove the letters from the 'script' entry there - as I posted earlier today, which will disable it completely.
I don't know if this has been asked/answered but when i dial a phone number using the keypad the sound of the keys goes through the external speaker on the phone- is there a reg edit to make dialing key sounds go through the earpiece and not the speaker?
Thanks
I have the busy tone problem with my O2 trion. I use the workaround of nathanlock and it works great. I also contacted HTC about the problem. They claim that they have never heard about it.
touch tones and busy tone really loud
I have the same issue. i'd really like to fix both. the busy tone is extremely loud, and the dialing tones let everyone in a 10 cubicle radius know you are making a call. I have a love hate relationship with my 8525. love the things it can do, hate the things it sometimes does....
found some sound keys for the dial buttons in the registry, but nothing that looks like volume settings for them.
I have the same issue! it was really anoying... not anymore
tone problem
Nero would you like to explain how you solved the problem
I'm also having the problem with the tones coming out of the speaker when dialling. Additionally when i push the red/orange phone button the phone makes a high pitched sounds from the speaker.
I really dont remember either of these problems a couple weeks ago when I finished properly flashing it. Some one mentioned skype. I did recently install that.
Same here. Strange problem.
workaround update: change "Script" value to "ap" for tone to play only once, and change "Sound" value to "busytone.wav" (comes in rom, at least for HTC TyTN) - it's not loud at all.
Keypad sound issue
I only have the keypad issue. I have looked around but have not been able to find a solution. I would like to have the sound from the keypad in the earphone not on the speaker.
Is this the way the tytn is setup or is it just the group here that has the issue?
Can your "Busy Tone" fix also fix the keypad speaker problem?

I've solved the keypad issue by selecting "Off" in the Keypad combo box at the end of the Phone Setting Page.
I hope it helps.

I not really sure where you set this option, keypad combo?
It may be me, but can you be more specific, please?
The option I've found is under Settings-> Phone
You may see three Combo lists: Ring type, Ring Tone and Keypad
For the Keypad you can have "Long Tones", "Short Tones" and "Off".
If you take the last one you won't hear anything when you press use the keypad for making a call.

Great got it, Thanks! How blind am I?
Solution to busy tone problem
I had the same problem regarding the busy tone going through the speaker. I also had the added aggravation that, after each time that problem happened, my calls would divert straight to voicemail until I soft reset.
Another problem I used to have was that if I had call waiting and tried to answer the waiting call, the phone would freeze and I would have to soft reset with the stylus.
I was using an SPV M3100 with the original Orange UK ROM in Spain, with a Vodafone Spain SIM.
I believe these are simply bugs in the early radio roms. They show up with unpredictable combinations of roaming or using different sims than those of the original ROM operator's.
I fixed both problems by upgrading my radio.
Hope that helps.

ring delay before ring tones: grrrrrrrr

Hi !
Has somebody found some solution to reduce the delay for the ringtones for blackstone ?
I've installed the second cab here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=258109) as well as write in the registery (av0pw0r), but i can't reduce the delay under (almost) 2 ring tones, eventough i use a *.wma file.
I've also tried to play on HD tweak (1.7 option), but this does not change anything...
This is very annoying me, i've already lost some calls.
I haven"t tried yet a cooked ROM, but i wonder if this would change something
Please help
make sure the ringtone is on the phone and not card. That helped me a lot.
tks for your answer.
But well, i use (for the moment) the "Alarm-Classic.wav" under windows\rings, so i think it's ok from this side
How much delay do u have ?
hi.
using wma ringtones I get a response on my HD in about 1 ring after a soft reset. From the second call on the HD rings at about half a ring to the caller.
three rings from to wake from soft off.
but i forgot to say that if the phone is already "on", the delay is about 1/2 half ringtone, which is acceptable ! .
It seems that the additionnal delay (about 1 sec.) comes from the phone to go from "standby" to "on"
I've always had a delay with every HTC I've had (C500, C600. E650, Touch HD) using standard and custom ROMs with ringtones as WAV's and MP3's on the device and the storage card. I got used to it ages ago and if the phones on my desk can now predict an incoming call before it rings
Hi,
I was also searching for a solution on the ring tone delay issue. Guess that is a winmobile thing.
However there is no delay if you switch off the ring-tone and enable vibration mode only. That is weired behavior of the phone cause why cannot the ring-tone sound as fast as the vibration comes in vibmode only? And why does the vibration comes as late as the ring-tone when in combi-mode?
I am afraid there is no solution so far...
Regs!
this delay is something you'll have to learn to live with, unfortunately. at least in europe people seem to be finding loud and/or dodgy ringtones not very nice, and when dealing with the wiindows mobile vibrate mode is the one to go for.
another suggestion is to set up a caller tune, people are more likely to wait longer when they're listening to music.
ive found i can get it to ring at 1 ring if i turn off caller id pictures on s2u2
Yeah, the operating system does all the checks and clearing up before handling the call to prevent dropping, the way WM handles things, you can't get way from the delay, slowing the CPU with app like a nuedynamicclock worsens it. Well I notice a call before it rings if it is on

All my wm devices have had this issue. My blackstone lights up from sleep a good 2 to 3 sec. before the first ring. I use the old phone ring tone and have four fairly well spaced rings before vm kicks in. I just count the rings as I get to the phone and it has become a non issue. The hd tweek for it seemed not to have an effect btw. Also I'm with t-mo usa and using their code I have my ringtime set to max rings. which is 30 sec. before vm.

Call sound: great, but volume very high

Hi all,
The call quality of the HD2 is very good. Reception is great, people understand me very well and I can understand them very good.
My only problem is that the sound is so loud, when I'm using my phone at my ear (so without speaker or bluetooth).
Do you have this as well? Is there somewhere a master volume that can be set?
To be clear: the volume is already at the minimum...
Thanks!
Koen
Does the earpiece speaker also pop/crackle somtimes when the tones are high or very loud? I hear a ticking in the earpiece speaker.. that is very anoying!
Will probably swap my device for a new one.
Not really.
But as I find it now too loud, I don't like to use to make normal phonecalls.
Koen
I have the same problem..
One weird thing though, it's only on outgoing calls, incoming the sound isnt too loud!
i had the same problem but only with outgoing calls an mine sounded terrible, still does( think my speaker is broken)
You can edit the registry.
in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Controlpanel\Soundcategories\ you have INCALL and INCALL 2, i think one is ingoing and one is outgoing calls.
Edit Initvol, i have both mine on 2 now. and the volume is much better!

Thanks, now it's great!!!
I've got the exact same thing!
The quality is great, but sometimes the volume is just way too loud, almost up to the point where it hurts my ear.
One additional thing is when I get a notification on the background that a message has arrived during one of those loud calls, volume actually switches back to normal.
In my registry incall2 was set to 5. Resetted it to 2, hope it works
could anyone clarify
Where can I find that
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Controlpanel\Soundcategories\ you have INCALL and INCALL 2 thing. Please help! How do I enter registry?

Not sure if I did a soft-reset, but you might just give it a shot.
Both outgoing and incoming call volumes are now fine on my device...
[edit]
Actually got another loud outgoing call..
When I took a better look at the inCall and inCall2 properties, they seem to be for the notifications you get when you're in a call.
So changing them to '2' is OK, but doesn't actually solve this issue.
It may be an explanation to why my sound swapped back to normal after receiving a notification though.

Tried a soft reset too, but my ears still hurt! Any other suggestions?
This is totally unacceptable, has nobody got a cure for this? I can't use my *phone* as a phone, the volume is deafening! Both speakerphone and earpiece are way too loud, even on the lowest volume setting.
try this one
Here's a solution : you need to use the Schapman advanced configuration tool v3.3 (freeware).
Go to "HTC audio manager" -> set "music volume" (or something close, I don't know of it is labelled in english, I only have the french version) to 30 or above (below 100, which is the maximum) and then soft reset your device.

I can't seem to get this to do the trick. Is there anyone out there who has used a program to specifically lower the earpiece and speakerphone volume on their HD2 'Leo'? I'm going to have to return my handset if I can't lower the volume. I love the phone but if I can't make calls on it it's useless!
*bump*
This needs keeping near the top as it's a MASSIVE problem. Doesn't *everyone* find their HD2 far too loud??
It happened to me only once, when I woke up, press power button to get the screen on and dialed a cab, it was way too much loud.
Today I made some calls, received them as well, and it was ok.

Issue Date & Time

Does anyone have a link to the part of the site where these supposed hotfixes will be....and how long will they be coming, any ideas? So far it's the speakerphone & earpiece volume which are of the utmost importance for me, then the pink camera etc etc etc.

Dial pad tone gone

The dial pad tone on my Dhd has become very very low that I can hardly ear it,that sound setting don't help, any ideas?thanx
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
Try installing audio manager from market and turn up system volume,... not sure where to find the system volume in phone settings but audio manager is good.
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
Sorted the problem thanx, still weird how the system volume whent low.
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
How'd you fix it?
(never mind) ... Why was it low in the first place?
Mine does this toodame happens to lock/unlock sound. I think it routes the sound to the call speaker instead of the rear speaker
Now that you mention it, I have the same. All my volume settings are set to Full and in sound options, I have selected to have sounds fr dial pad and for touch screen and for lock/unlock. I don't think they are redirected to call speaker because I don't hear sound there either.
Anyone found a solution without installing 3rd party app?
Ok, looked deeper into it and discovered that actually the only solution is the audio manager. It seems to be a must have as Android misses critical volume settings on its interface. That application is the only way to allow you to adjust the volume.
That's no excuse for HTC, Google or whoever is responsible for the Android OS or DHD. (really, who is responsible? I never thought that)
Going to give it a try myself as well.
Chefs, is there something that can be done on your end?
I use Sound Manager for this issue...happened to me twice already...
Other applications are responsible for this.
I too had faced this problem and suddenly the tones of dial pad were gone on my htc desire, it was only vibrating. The settings of Sound were all fine, still no tone. So being a tester I am, I backtracked and remembered what all I did.
It turned out when we install applications in Android we give them access to core functionalities of system. I had used Fring application prior in the day, where I had used Fring's Dialer pad. I logged into fring again went to dialer pad, increased volume and indicator said "Volume" unlike any other indicator of volume in HTC Desire. After increasing the volume, I logged out and went to phone dialer again, and tones were back. So our applications are responsible for turning down volume. A centralized application which controls all application can come in handy and there are few in android market available.
Hope this helped
I have deleted some apps from my phone following this problem but seemed to make no difference... today however the volume on dialer has returned to normal??? But also the noises on the qwerty pad now sound like an old fashioned typewriter??? My 4 yr old was messing with phone earlier but checked settings I can think of and nothing has changed... confused!
yea i got the same problem tried emailing HTC they dont know anything about it they just replied with
Kindly go to Menu>settings>sounds>check:
audible touch screen
audible selections
screen lock sounds
:/
thanx for XDA or i would've never sort it out
