Switching Back and forth from iPhone 5 - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I can switch from my iP5 to the N4 and get almost everything to work, Data included except for the Text Messages. The problem is I use iMesssage on my iP5 and for some reason when I'm on my N4 anyone not using iMessage I get their texts fine, but anyone using iMessage I don't.
I've turned off iMessage on my iPhone but it doesn't seem to do anything.
Anyone having issues with a fix??
Thanks

This is the problem with proprietary software. Is there a way to have them send you sms only and NOT iMessages?
I found this. Seemed interesting.
http://forums.androidcentral.com/ge...ge-issues-after-switching-iphone-android.html

I had this same problem going from a 4S to an android, the problem is their phones still think you are using iMessage so they only send them through that service. I was never able to find a fix but it did fix itself after a couple days. Also if your friends turn off iMessage then they would be able to text you just fine.

I switched to using Google voice for text -- free texts (except no txtig pics) You can also use your Gvoice # for phone calls. Or you can port your current # to Gvoice.

The fix usually is to turn off iMessage on the iPhone before your switch devices so it unregisters you from their server. Your friends may also benefit from deleting their conversation with you and starting a new one on their devices.

Put your "old" evo to good use, turn it's wifi on.

I'm sure many of you already know this, but I didn't. It still seems to work as a pda with wifi. Maybe it could still work as a phone if you had voip set up?!
Lol! I used my nexus to text with google voice, and message with talk and aim for awhile once it shut off.
If you have a google voice number it texts as it normally would.

i use my nexus for the same thing, it replace my iphone3g, which is now just my ipod touch! lol.
Same here, but with my old Touch Pro. Skype + WiFi = my new "landline". ;-)
The only thing that stopped working for me was the Sprint software that requires cell data line. I even got it to sync with my google account so that it essentially syncs automatically and passively with my current Hero. Contacts, email, etc.
Ain't technology great? :-D

texting over wifi?

I have a problem. I recently switched to my note 3 from an I5 and love everything except for there doesn't seem to be a way to text via wifi. I have a lot of classes in the basement or in labs at my school where data service is non existent but on the iPhone I could I message over my schools wifi..... what can I do with my note to mirror this? It drives me and my wife nuts that for hours at a time my phone is a paper weight unless we talk via FB messenger which eats up her data plan.
Is there a solution to this problem or is this phone doomed to not send a text using wifi data?
You my friend may be outta luck looking to text via wifi. Something I wish I could do. You probably was using Imessage on your I5 which can use wifi

If you don't mind having a Second phone number for texting, Pinger might be your best bet to txt over wifi.

If you don't mind having a second phone number to text from, you can set up a Google Voice account. Then you can send texts via wifi with the VoicePlus app.
You can also use hangouts

I was going to suggest hangouts as well. I don't use it but I'm guessing it would work over wifi
Take a sec and hit thanks if I helped or if you're in a good mood!
FYI, one additional limitation of Google Voice (yes, it works over WiFi) is that can neither send nor receive MMS.
Which means that if you text using your GV number, you have to hope your friends and relatives will be able remember that they can only MMS you using your cell #, but not your GV #. They won't get a notification that an MMS sent to your GV number got silently dropped, and neither will you.
Looks like Hangouts is supposed to do both

(although I haven't used it yet)
but YMMV may vary depending on country. (Same goes with GV too I would presume).

Verizon wifi texting

Is there a way to wifi text from a rooted Verizon phone and keep your normal phone number?
there was another member asking this question in another thread that was long and i cant remember where it was located but the short answer is no. there are options like Google Voice and other messaging apps that will easily work with Wifi only reception but not the phone app. i know Tmob offers this function but Verizon does not yet.

Thats kind of what i thought. The reception on the note 3 is no where near as good as my droid razr. My business is in a fairly weak cell area and i normally can't get a text to send from my normal indoor spot with my note. People can be sitting right next me with their other brand phones and send and receive text any time they want.

i have had the complete line of DROID phones from Motorola since the first DROID for Verizon and stopping with the Ultra and agree they have and have always had the best radio's for reception but i have not found any issues with my N3 that didnt match my Moto phones.
I also find GV texting to be great and allows me to receive and respond from my phone, tablet, and laptop which leaves more options than phone reception.
good luck
I wish!!!!! I really wish! I had a problem with my Verizon account one time where I lost all 3G access - and it wasn't my phone's fault. But funny enough, I could receive SMS but I couldn't receive MMS - regardless of connection to WiFi or not. After a week of talking to Verizon tiered support, I finally got to the highest support (some guy in the USA) who I was able to talk to. MMS goes through 3g and there's no changing how that works no matter what you do. I had always thought MMS went through WiFi.
Anyway, turns out someone had accidentally turned off 3g access on my account (iPhone 4s at the time). Soon as this guy figured it out, he flipped a switch and I started getting 3g again, lol.
Either way, I'm a big fan of iMessage, WhatsApp (was a big fan), Hangouts, and Telegram means of communication. They're 5x faster, usually more reliable, and cost $0 to use - and yes, they work on WiFi. Hard to get everyone I know to use one means though... so I end up doing a fair bit of texting even today.
I think the Verizon messaging app actually works on Wifi. I can be in a dead zone and still receive sms and mms with wifi connected.

The Verizon messaging app sends SMS/MMS? I thought it was a Google Hangout type thing. Cool

I use the GV Phone app when traveling outside of the US. You need a Google Voice number if you want to call real phones and not just app-to-app (like Groove IP or many other chat-based apps). Talkatone is another app which integrates with Google Voice, but I haven't had any luck with it.
Voice calling with GV Phone works pretty well if you keep one thing in mind...WiFi quality matters. Low WiFi signal or a congested network will increase latency and jitter to the point that calls will drop/fragment/stutter. Conversely, with a good quality WiFi signal you can talk for free from anywhere!
I cant post a link...check Google Play for GV Phone.
I use the Google voice app for texting and calls. I gave my Google voice number to everyone and as far as they know, it is my only number now.

I did this too, and still do for the most part --- just really sucks that I can't get MMS with Google Voice. If I could get MMS with Google Voice - I'd be giving this number out to everyone - including Family. But I'm seeing rumors of Google Voice saying something about finally offering MMS at the start of next year.

I'm curious to see if they ever fully integrate voice and hangouts. I wonder if the voice app will keep voicemail/phone calls and hangouts takes over SMS/mms or if they are going to cram it all into one app.

issues sending txts with Nexus 6p on Project Fi

I got my Nexus 6p 3 days ago and activated it immediately on Project Fi. I'm having a major issue which Google's support doesn't seem to know how to fix and apparently they've "escalated it" and say that's it's a known issue. I can receive texts from anyone just fine but when I send them, only people on t-mobile's network (or one of the small companies that use their network) can receive individual texts from me. They can receive group messages from me just fine but they don't get anything when I send them individually. It shows that it was sent on my end (no errors in Hangouts).
I've tried using Messenger instead and nothing changes. Google tried to blame it on iMessage since some of my contacts have iphones but it occurs with contacts who have Android devices as well. To test the theory though, I had a friend turn off iMessage and it still didn't work. Google also had me deactivate and then reactivate my Google Fi service which did jack squat.
Any suggestions or similar experiences while Google is "trying to fix it"?

Help with MMS issues on Verizon network

I've had this phone rooted since last fall to keep up with the newest features, security updates and Android versions. No problems there. But lately with every single nougat ROM, I'm experiencing major MMS problems. None of the people I talk to, friends or family members use apps like WhatsApp to send messages or group chat or send pictures. They either have iMessage or use default Android Messengers so I'm stuck using Textra.
Every so often (but this happens multiple times daily) I am not able to send or receive MMS on this phone. I'll watch those sending dots go forever. Only fixes are rebooting the phone or turning off/on the cellular data. I only realize I'm missing out on receiving MMS when Textra displays a pop up saying there's an error. I'll then have to restart the phone to get them to come in. It sucks missing out on group chats like this.
I've posted this problem on all of the ROM threads and either no one responded or they didn't have Verizon. I seriously have no idea what to do. I'm honestly thinking about throwing this son of a ***** away because this isn't worth the headache. But the phone runs and works perfectly otherwise. Please help!

I do not have Nougat but I do know that solid texting comes with the proper settings for your APN. Find it in:
/Settings/...More/Mobil Networks/Access Point Names/
The correct choice for Verizon is: VZWINTERNET
If you have the correct APN setting, texting should work fine. What is wrong with Textra? I use it all the time and like it a lot.
