texting over wifi? - Verizon Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a problem. I recently switched to my note 3 from an I5 and love everything except for there doesn't seem to be a way to text via wifi. I have a lot of classes in the basement or in labs at my school where data service is non existent but on the iPhone I could I message over my schools wifi..... what can I do with my note to mirror this? It drives me and my wife nuts that for hours at a time my phone is a paper weight unless we talk via FB messenger which eats up her data plan.
Is there a solution to this problem or is this phone doomed to not send a text using wifi data?

You my friend may be outta luck looking to text via wifi. Something I wish I could do. You probably was using Imessage on your I5 which can use wifi

If you don't mind having a Second phone number for texting, Pinger might be your best bet to txt over wifi.

If you don't mind having a second phone number to text from, you can set up a Google Voice account. Then you can send texts via wifi with the VoicePlus app.

You can also use hangouts

I was going to suggest hangouts as well. I don't use it but I'm guessing it would work over wifi
Take a sec and hit thanks if I helped or if you're in a good mood!

FYI, one additional limitation of Google Voice (yes, it works over WiFi) is that can neither send nor receive MMS.
Which means that if you text using your GV number, you have to hope your friends and relatives will be able remember that they can only MMS you using your cell #, but not your GV #. They won't get a notification that an MMS sent to your GV number got silently dropped, and neither will you.
Looks like Hangouts is supposed to do both
https://support.google.com/hangouts/answer/3441321?hl=en
(although I haven't used it yet)
but YMMV may vary depending on country. (Same goes with GV too I would presume).

Use as just Wifi device in US

Live in the US and would just like to use as a tablet and not phone. Do you have to activate the phone portion or can you just use as a tablet Wifi device?
Thx

If you have no intentions on using it as a phone, why dont you check out the samsung player 5.
I know its not the same but just a suggestion. Unless you got money to blow, then yes you can use just about any android device without activating the phone portion.

I plan to be doing basically the same thing. But I plan on using a SIM card from a iPad to use data only. That way with google voice and groove ip I can basically still use it as a complete phone, with only paying data.
You do not have to activate a unlocked phone in order to use it as just a device.
There is no problem using the note as a tablet. I wanted a small tablet and was going to get the 7 inch galaxy tab but decided to pickup the note instead. No regrets. I have not yet tried to use my iPad Sim card with it. I am using the galaxy nexus as my phone right now and love ics but it will be more awesome on the galaxy note.

Would this even work? I am pretty sure Google Voice uses voice lines for calls. I know using GV for text would work, I plan on doing this instead of paying $20 a month. Currently GV does not support MMS, but they have said they are working on it. I can wait a few months for that if needed.
I looked into Groove IP and found this... I would hate to LOSE my gmail account.
This is a possible TOS violation! Don't use this app less you risk getting your account suspended!
The same thing happened with GVXMPP (a 3rd party service Lifehacker also reviewed) -- as soon as it got popular Google got pissed and started locking people out of their accounts (not just Voice, but ALL Google services associated with their login). It happened to me personally and sucked.
Section 5.3 of Google's TOS:
"You agree not to access (or attempt to access) any of the Services by any means other than through the interface that is provided by Google, unless you have been specifically allowed to do so in a separate agreement with Google"
I doubt the developer has gotten approval from Google... You have been warned!!

Skype and What'sapp FTW.
Using the Note with no sim card in it resulted in huge battery drain for me (and an annoying icon in the task bar).
But putting it in airplane mode and THEN enabling wifi solved the battery drain. However that needs to be done after each reboot. Also you can't use Bluetooth when it's in airplane mode.

You can enable flight mode on the Note which disables the 3G and wifi radios. Wifi can then be enabled seperately. Your cellular radio can remain off.

I too would be willing to donate to this cause. However, I've been testing with GrooveIP over Wifi, and it works extremely well. Call quality is excellent and you can use it for incoming and outgoing calls without using your plan minutes. I'm using the $5 pro version which integrates with the native dialer, so you makes calls just like you would normally. I know this isn't the same thing as T-Mobile's Wifi calling, but it's a good solution nonetheless.
Best chances of it happening will be when opitmus g with JB is released by T-Mobile. Need system dump with rils, maybe some libs and maybe an apk will be in there. That's what we had to do with the G2 and many older devices when ICS came out. But might be a few months before u see anything. I heard rumors T-Mobile are setting up SIP support but its just rumors
I second the endorsement of GrooVe IP. I don't have my N4 yet (caught in Play Store limbo, like so many others), but in anticipation I've been testing GrooVe IP lightly on my LG G2x and have found it to be very good, with audio quality noticeably better than wifi calling.
sipdroid with a free pbxes account. disable all codecs except speex. excellent.
I really wish google would improve the native sip client...
i'm in for $30 for nexus 4 wifi calling. a lack of wifi calling is only thing holding me back from getting a nexus 4. I have zero tmobile signal inside my house.. (okay, a little at one corner, but not where my home office is.. )
I'd love to get a nexus 4.. but only if it has wifi calling.. even if it is a terrible cm7/gb2.3 hack to get it working.. Obviously, IMS calling would be best.. but as long as it works..
I use groove Ip for my wifi calling. I fwd all my calls to my phone anyway since google voice is my main number, when I get home and connect wifi, groove IP takes over and I receive calls on my phone anyway.
I haven't had any issues using this method on the nexus 4.

Using your Nexus 4 for wifi calling with Groove ip do the people ever mention echo or dropped words? I ask that because using my tablet for such calls I can hear a little of both. I have fixed some of it via settings for Groove ip but it is still there some and I was wondering if it worked better with the phone?
It might be possible if the T-Mobile version of the LG Optimus phones with the same hardware have it. Assuming someone can hack it together, and the differences in OS aren't a show stopper.

My testing has mostly been by calling my other voicemail line and listening to the recording, so it's only been short segments, but I haven't detected any echoes or dropouts so far.
I've made hour long calls to landline and mobiles with absolutely no drops or issues. In fact the quality is better than what I experienced on vzw. I would say it is on par with my FiOS landline phone. It will of course depend on the quality of your WiFi connection, particularly jitter and latency.

I had echoing when I first used it, but solved it by enabling the basic echo canceller. It send a beep when the call connects then auto magically adjust the device for echoes.
Haven't had a problem since.

I didn't realize google voice costs $20 to port my number to them. PLus the $5 for GrooVe IP, I'm going to be into this for $25, but at least I should be able to use my phone in my house again.
Has anyone tried Bobsled for this?
u are not alone in this hunt... good news is... 2013 is a good year for voip.
so first off all let me just tell u, ive been hunting for a good FREE VOIP, 4 wayyy to frigging long.
but i have finally got the perfect COMBO of apps that get the job done, and might i add quite well too!
first go set up ur google voice account and get u a free number....
download google voice.... pray ur phone has had service at one point or another....and google acceepts ur phone to allow u to use google voice (google voice is a pain in the ass to get it to register sometimes)...for some reason they want only people with active service to use their service... which makes no sense at all.....but... sometimes those free texting apps that give u 10 FREE minutes calling will do it....
then go download gv+ or mo+ (same friggin thing_ same devoloper) - seems like when one is acting up i can uninstall it and download the other and it will work perfectly for about 2 months then i gota switch back to the other again... its odd...
but i can call anywhere in america for free.... no questions asked... as long as i download voice and install it also. idk
i actually use voice for all my texting and then when i wana call sum1 then i use the mo+ app. and it works flawlessly. no weird numbers, no grainy calls, no echo... its wonderful!

[Q] Google Voice

Hello guys, I have a Google Nexus 7 running 4.1.2, and an AT&T Galaxy S III on 4.1.2.
I would like to send/recieve text's on my N7.
I purchased Tablet Talk, but it doesnt work well for me. It works for about 10 minutes, then nothing. It says its connected but no texts get sent from the tablet. It can recieve but wont send. And when I use Tablet Talk my WiFi speeds go from 25MBPS to 3-4 MBPS.
I keep reading people are saying that I can use Google Voice for texting.
How exactly does this work? Will the texts update on my phone and on my N7? I would like to set it up, but Id like to get some details first.
i just open up g voice and go to the text area. The texts sync up on my s3 in g voice as well. I no longer have my g voice texts go to my carrier texts anymore, that was causing to many issues for me.
You can sync GVoice with your cell or choose an individual number. I chose an individual number and only give it out to certain folks.
Also, combine GVoice with an app such as Talkatone and you can make and receive phone calls on your N7. As long as you have WiFi or teathered.

30 dollar TMO plan - Results? Best VOIP solutions?

So, I'm sorry to add to the collection of posts concerning these two subjects, but I've read for hours and hours and not quite seen the consistent results I want.
My SIM card is on the way in the mail from TMO, and I intend to go on the 30/month unlimited text/5GB 4g data/100 minutes, and, like everyone else, want to find a way around the 100 minutes.
I've thought about: Skype, where the quality is great, but I can't get the integration. If I went this route, I'd like to have my Gvoice be the same # as my skype, so I could send/receive calls, and texts on the same number. While this might be possible, the equation goes all wrong @ MMS.
Sipdroid: I've got this all setup, but I am an IT service professional, and where I setup connections, this thing can never make it through the firewall. I don't want to go around opening up ports either. But I love the integration, and choice of codec. How is this solution overall, with Gvoice/pbxes?
GrooVe: While this was crazy easy setup (haven't purchased full version), calls are still sometimes failing to send, or occasional cut-outs even over wifi. Success here?
Basically, I'm looking for optimal reliability AND integration of setup. I'd like to send/receive calls, texts, and MMS all on the same number, and would like to have this be A.) Reliable, B.) on the 30/month plan.
Is it possible? Or am I better off going with a third party like Straight Talk, having my bandwidth policies be Unclear at best, and pay the extra 15?
Thanks, sorry for rambling.
Ok so I did the groove route and it works okay. Like you said it's not very good though. So I use this as a last resort if I'm low on minutes (rarely) and within WiFi range, but not at home.
So when at home, which is where I make most phone calls at, is use this device below. It logs into Google voice and uses the gmail calling like grove ip, except it doesn't sound like crap like groove. No one has complained like I had frequently got when I used groove. You just plug any regular home phone into it after setup and it just works.

How has this worked over the mobile network?
on 3g? Edge possible?
I started to do the Amazon PBIAF method, but got mixed up at the terminal step and cancelled. Was kind of in a hurry and didn't sit down with it long.
My biggest issue was that today, traveling outside of my major city (Grand Rapids, MI), I roamed for nearly a half hour. Where I get no data. Even PBIAF is down the toilet there. Starting to look into other options. May have been too good to be true.
Did you know the Nexus 4 has a built in SIP client? I have been using it since the Nexus S was on 2.3.1 and it works great on WiFi. It has the least echo, native dialer, working bluetooth, screen unlock to answer. I have never had to open any ports on my firewall (DD-WRT) for it to work. I use it with SIP Sorcery connected to Sipgate and Google Voice. Just open dialer > settings and at the bottom "internet Call Settings"
Only issue is no audio on T-Mobile
I rarely leave nyc. So my experience in low areas is limited. Is been great using the silk codec everything is clear. The problem is with the mic on the Nexus 4. It's too sensitive making calls for the recipient sound terrible. To solve this I just use headphones with a built in mic.

Verizon wifi texting

Is there a way to wifi text from a rooted Verizon phone and keep your normal phone number?
there was another member asking this question in another thread that was long and i cant remember where it was located but the short answer is no. there are options like Google Voice and other messaging apps that will easily work with Wifi only reception but not the phone app. i know Tmob offers this function but Verizon does not yet.

Thats kind of what i thought. The reception on the note 3 is no where near as good as my droid razr. My business is in a fairly weak cell area and i normally can't get a text to send from my normal indoor spot with my note. People can be sitting right next me with their other brand phones and send and receive text any time they want.

i have had the complete line of DROID phones from Motorola since the first DROID for Verizon and stopping with the Ultra and agree they have and have always had the best radio's for reception but i have not found any issues with my N3 that didnt match my Moto phones.
I also find GV texting to be great and allows me to receive and respond from my phone, tablet, and laptop which leaves more options than phone reception.
good luck
I wish!!!!! I really wish! I had a problem with my Verizon account one time where I lost all 3G access - and it wasn't my phone's fault. But funny enough, I could receive SMS but I couldn't receive MMS - regardless of connection to WiFi or not. After a week of talking to Verizon tiered support, I finally got to the highest support (some guy in the USA) who I was able to talk to. MMS goes through 3g and there's no changing how that works no matter what you do. I had always thought MMS went through WiFi.
Anyway, turns out someone had accidentally turned off 3g access on my account (iPhone 4s at the time). Soon as this guy figured it out, he flipped a switch and I started getting 3g again, lol.
Either way, I'm a big fan of iMessage, WhatsApp (was a big fan), Hangouts, and Telegram means of communication. They're 5x faster, usually more reliable, and cost $0 to use - and yes, they work on WiFi. Hard to get everyone I know to use one means though... so I end up doing a fair bit of texting even today.
I think the Verizon messaging app actually works on Wifi. I can be in a dead zone and still receive sms and mms with wifi connected.

I use the GV Phone app when traveling outside of the US. You need a Google Voice number if you want to call real phones and not just app-to-app (like Groove IP or many other chat-based apps). Talkatone is another app which integrates with Google Voice, but I haven't had any luck with it.
Voice calling with GV Phone works pretty well if you keep one thing in mind...WiFi quality matters. Low WiFi signal or a congested network will increase latency and jitter to the point that calls will drop/fragment/stutter. Conversely, with a good quality WiFi signal you can talk for free from anywhere!
I cant post a link...check Google Play for GV Phone.
I use the Google voice app for texting and calls. I gave my Google voice number to everyone and as far as they know, it is my only number now.

I did this too, and still do for the most part --- just really sucks that I can't get MMS with Google Voice. If I could get MMS with Google Voice - I'd be giving this number out to everyone - including Family. But I'm seeing rumors of Google Voice saying something about finally offering MMS at the start of next year.

I'm curious to see if they ever fully integrate voice and hangouts. I wonder if the voice app will keep voicemail/phone calls and hangouts takes over SMS/mms or if they are going to cram it all into one app.
