[Q] Google Voice - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello guys, I have a Google Nexus 7 running 4.1.2, and an AT&T Galaxy S III on 4.1.2.
I would like to send/recieve text's on my N7.
I purchased Tablet Talk, but it doesnt work well for me. It works for about 10 minutes, then nothing. It says its connected but no texts get sent from the tablet. It can recieve but wont send. And when I use Tablet Talk my WiFi speeds go from 25MBPS to 3-4 MBPS.
I keep reading people are saying that I can use Google Voice for texting.
How exactly does this work? Will the texts update on my phone and on my N7? I would like to set it up, but Id like to get some details first.

i just open up g voice and go to the text area. The texts sync up on my s3 in g voice as well. I no longer have my g voice texts go to my carrier texts anymore, that was causing to many issues for me.

You can sync GVoice with your cell or choose an individual number. I chose an individual number and only give it out to certain folks.
Also, combine GVoice with an app such as Talkatone and you can make and receive phone calls on your N7. As long as you have WiFi or teathered.

Texts and calls through tethered phone?

Hi. I would like to tether my nexus 7 to my razr and be able to receive and send texts AND make and receive phone calls. I found an app called tablet talk but from what I can tell its just texts. Any ideas? Willing to throw down some cash for it.
If you are in a area where google voice works, you can use that.
Here is the thread that talks about it

My car has a factory navigation unit. When I get into the car it synch's up with my phone so i can make and receive calls using the car. Is there no way to accomplish this with a tablet?
Tablet talk covers text.
Groove IP covers phone.
Talkatone covers phone and text.

GrooveIP

GrooveIP does not work for me on N 4.
Did anyone manage to make it work?
It works fine on my other devices w/same username/password.
could you elaborate a bit?
in what way does it not work?
it works just fine for me. i'm running the latest pa (3.65 from 7/10) and the latest franco nightly (r163).
Works fine for me...even used it 2weeks ago while in Canada.
Works fine for me. Better call quality then cellular.
I use it for the most part without issue. If you are trying to use it over you network and not wifi you net to go into the settings and check 3G/4G calling.

I actually had trouble with it and didn't have time to troubleshoot yet. Check out GV Phone. Worked for the couple of test calls that I did.

I've had some troubles with GrooveIP this past month and a half. It works sometimes when I try, but receiving calls is very hit-and-miss. The app doesn't maintain connection to Google Voice very well. I tried using it as my main source of voice, but it hasn't worked well for me so I have to switch back to using cell minutes. It's weird; when it acts up, the app thinks it's connected to Voice, but it definitely isn't. Incoming calls hit Google Voice, but don't ring my phone. Outgoing calls don't even get to Google Voice, the app just sits at "Dialing..." and doesn't do anything. I've posted in a few threads on these forums and on their Play store page so hopefully they figure out what's wrong.
GrooveIP works well
I am on stock ROM and also tried it with CM 10.1
I have absolutely no issues. Used it in Canada as well as Hong Kong. Had it on N4 from day one. Previously used it on Atrix. HTC One S without any issues as well.

If you have Google Voice set for forwarding your Google Voice number to your phone, that is most likely the reason you are not receiving incoming calls to GrooveIP. Turn the forwarding off and then recheck the behavior.

I have Google Voice only forwarding to Google Chat, which I believe is what GrooveIP uses (correct me if I'm wrong). I've ticked almost every option in GrooveIP, allowed it to use all wakelocks and everything. It just sometimes disconnects from the servers and refuses to reconnect automatically because it thinks that it is still connected when it isn't. I even have it reconnect to the servers every 5 minutes, still nothing. I have to manually go in and refresh the connect (by re-logging into Google Voice through GrooveIP)

Hmmm... not seeing that here, of course I only pretty much use it on wi-fi. Are you using it on cell data when you see this behavior?

texting over wifi?

I have a problem. I recently switched to my note 3 from an I5 and love everything except for there doesn't seem to be a way to text via wifi. I have a lot of classes in the basement or in labs at my school where data service is non existent but on the iPhone I could I message over my schools wifi..... what can I do with my note to mirror this? It drives me and my wife nuts that for hours at a time my phone is a paper weight unless we talk via FB messenger which eats up her data plan.
Is there a solution to this problem or is this phone doomed to not send a text using wifi data?
You my friend may be outta luck looking to text via wifi. Something I wish I could do. You probably was using Imessage on your I5 which can use wifi

If you don't mind having a Second phone number for texting, Pinger might be your best bet to txt over wifi.

If you don't mind having a second phone number to text from, you can set up a Google Voice account. Then you can send texts via wifi with the VoicePlus app.
You can also use hangouts

I was going to suggest hangouts as well. I don't use it but I'm guessing it would work over wifi
Take a sec and hit thanks if I helped or if you're in a good mood!
FYI, one additional limitation of Google Voice (yes, it works over WiFi) is that can neither send nor receive MMS.
Which means that if you text using your GV number, you have to hope your friends and relatives will be able remember that they can only MMS you using your cell #, but not your GV #. They won't get a notification that an MMS sent to your GV number got silently dropped, and neither will you.
Looks like Hangouts is supposed to do both

(although I haven't used it yet)
but YMMV may vary depending on country. (Same goes with GV too I would presume).

Verizon wifi texting

Is there a way to wifi text from a rooted Verizon phone and keep your normal phone number?
there was another member asking this question in another thread that was long and i cant remember where it was located but the short answer is no. there are options like Google Voice and other messaging apps that will easily work with Wifi only reception but not the phone app. i know Tmob offers this function but Verizon does not yet.

Thats kind of what i thought. The reception on the note 3 is no where near as good as my droid razr. My business is in a fairly weak cell area and i normally can't get a text to send from my normal indoor spot with my note. People can be sitting right next me with their other brand phones and send and receive text any time they want.

i have had the complete line of DROID phones from Motorola since the first DROID for Verizon and stopping with the Ultra and agree they have and have always had the best radio's for reception but i have not found any issues with my N3 that didnt match my Moto phones.
I also find GV texting to be great and allows me to receive and respond from my phone, tablet, and laptop which leaves more options than phone reception.
good luck
I wish!!!!! I really wish! I had a problem with my Verizon account one time where I lost all 3G access - and it wasn't my phone's fault. But funny enough, I could receive SMS but I couldn't receive MMS - regardless of connection to WiFi or not. After a week of talking to Verizon tiered support, I finally got to the highest support (some guy in the USA) who I was able to talk to. MMS goes through 3g and there's no changing how that works no matter what you do. I had always thought MMS went through WiFi.
Anyway, turns out someone had accidentally turned off 3g access on my account (iPhone 4s at the time). Soon as this guy figured it out, he flipped a switch and I started getting 3g again, lol.
Either way, I'm a big fan of iMessage, WhatsApp (was a big fan), Hangouts, and Telegram means of communication. They're 5x faster, usually more reliable, and cost $0 to use - and yes, they work on WiFi. Hard to get everyone I know to use one means though... so I end up doing a fair bit of texting even today.
I think the Verizon messaging app actually works on Wifi. I can be in a dead zone and still receive sms and mms with wifi connected.

The Verizon messaging app sends SMS/MMS? I thought it was a Google Hangout type thing. Cool

I use the GV Phone app when traveling outside of the US. You need a Google Voice number if you want to call real phones and not just app-to-app (like Groove IP or many other chat-based apps). Talkatone is another app which integrates with Google Voice, but I haven't had any luck with it.
Voice calling with GV Phone works pretty well if you keep one thing in mind...WiFi quality matters. Low WiFi signal or a congested network will increase latency and jitter to the point that calls will drop/fragment/stutter. Conversely, with a good quality WiFi signal you can talk for free from anywhere!
I cant post a link...check Google Play for GV Phone.
I use the Google voice app for texting and calls. I gave my Google voice number to everyone and as far as they know, it is my only number now.

I did this too, and still do for the most part --- just really sucks that I can't get MMS with Google Voice. If I could get MMS with Google Voice - I'd be giving this number out to everyone - including Family. But I'm seeing rumors of Google Voice saying something about finally offering MMS at the start of next year.

I'm curious to see if they ever fully integrate voice and hangouts. I wonder if the voice app will keep voicemail/phone calls and hangouts takes over SMS/mms or if they are going to cram it all into one app.

Interesting experience- Verizon N7 on T-Mobile phone plan

Everything I have read says that LTE N7's don't work on T-Mobile phone plans and the Verizon LTE 7's are the same as the others. I picked up a LNIB N7 a while back and haven't activated it as my other 4g tablet takes a standard sim. Previously, my S2's sim would only let me text, no data, in my T-Mobile branded 7.0+.
I put my postpaid unlimited Note 2's sim in the tablet a little bit ago and data is working perfectly (went back and forth between 3g and H til I restarted it). The tablet is still stock 4.4.2 with no root so I don't have sms.
Could it be that T-Mobile doesn't recognize Verizon sold N7's as tablets?
Tethering seems to work though I've surpassed my allotment. I can't get anything to connect to the Note without getting an upsell page. Hell, if this is sustainable I might ditch the Note 2 and my AT&T 520 for a 521 so I have a compact option (that's also a lot easier to pull the sim from) with wifi calling.
I tried it again today. Watched an hour of Netflix just fine. My T-Mobile is still showing my phone as the Note 2. Interestingly enough, it showed my old AT&T Note 1's as unknown devices.
I texted from my T-Mobile 7.0+ (text and data plan) and it came through as a push message with no way to reply (as expected). I then called the N7 from the 7.0+ using Vonage with that tablet's number. It rang several times and went to voicemail. I hung up and called on the N7 (using Vonage set to my phone's sim number) and was able to check voicemail by dialing the sim number.
T-Mobile Visual Voicemail is shown as incompatible on Google Play. Is there a way to sideload it? The T-Mobile website just links to Play.
With root for the xposed sms trick and Vonage for outgoing calls and voicemail this could be a usable phone setup for me. No cellular calls but I can get by with voip on LTE and sms. Not bad for $210 and unlimited $40 (family add a line) a month! Too bad I actually need something smaller for my summer job...
Battery life using it over LTE as a quasi phone is ok, better than my S2 but not as good as my Note 2.
Still working fine. Tomorrow I'm going to attempt root and sms.
Anyone know of a way to sideload the T-Mobile visual voicemail app?
Are there any other ways besides Vonage to use the cellular number as a voip number?
Also, fwiw, I tethered my 520 to it (no sim in the Nokia) to download a new map app. Roughly 480 mb's and it didn't count as hotspot use, just overall data.
Rooted and installed xposed today; I now have sms through hangouts. I tried go sms pro but didn't like it. Sms's are going through fine, calls are still fine through Vonage.

That's very interesting! You can install the Tmobile Visual VM APK easily, just search for it. I have it on my Nexus 5, and don't see why it wouldn't work on the N7
Done!
I made a Vonage call using my 7.0+ (attached to that sim) and left a voicemail. It immediately showed up on the visual voicemail.
So, now I have-
-Unlimited data per my phone plan, apparently unlimited tethering as well
-Unlimited sms and mms through hangouts; sms sometimes still shows as a push message I cannot reply from)
-Unlimited outgoing calls with Vonage (though I read they may be charging in a few months); 200 minutes would be a big month for me, I used to have the Virgin Mobile 250 and T-Mobile $30 plans and rarely went over them
-Visual voicemail, I feel this has worked for me in the past on wifi only which is helpful
-No incoming calls. Any idea how to get notifications of missed calls? -edit. The visual voicemail is fast enough to notify me if they leave a voicemail.-
If only this thing had vibration! I really want a slim Defender style case too. Next thing is to get a slimport adapter, unlock my 520 to use as a compact/"talking" option, and consider if I still want my Note 2 (of course I do! ).
Edit- disabled hangouts and now using 8sms. Much better!
And now the Nokia is unlocked.
