[Q] Drag and Dropping Files onto Nexus 4 - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I tried to put some of my music from my computer onto my nexus 4 via the "drag and drop" method with Windows Explorer, as I had previously done with my nexus s. However, when i try to drop the files on my nexus 4, it will not let me put files in the internal storage. Does anybody know what I'm doing wrong?

Where do I need to place 'SD Card' files?

I have some apps I want to transfer from PC to my Nexus 4. They come with files/folders that need to reside on an 'SD Card' however clearly the nexus 4 does not have one.
I.E. they say "Extract the zip to SD Card/Android/data"
Where do I place them? Do I need to make a virtual SD card of some sort, or do they go directly into Nexus4->Internal Storage->Android->Data (as viewed from Windows when connecting via USB)
If so, that leads me to my 2nd question. Why does it not work? apps say they need to download data, even though its there in the \Android\Data folder
When you say apps do you just mean the APK files? If so, just copy them onto the 'SD Card' as you see it on your PC and then install them via a file manager on your phone. Or use ADB to install them manually
e.g.
adb install name_of_app.apk
I think it's suppose to be in Android/Obb/(your downloaded files).

I'm new to Android so bare with me. I realise I can place the .apk anywhere (I can can't I?) and run it on the Nexus itself to install the app. What I mean is some apps will store data on an SD card. I have the data on my PC. I want to transfer it to the Android device so it doesn't have to download it again, or simply fail because it doesn't recognise the data is there.
So lets assume 'MyApp' needs to access 'MyFile.x' which would normally reside on 'SDCard\Com.MyApp.001\MyFile.x'
What is the equivelent with the Nexus4 so that I can paste 'MyFile.x' and have 'MyApp' read it?
When you plug you're phone in
Go to my computer > nexus 4 > internal storage
That is /sdcard
Obb files go in /mnt/shell/emulated/obb/
Note: /mnt/shell/emulated/ is the only way to access the true root of your sdcard
This is also where your cwm backups are stored
The folder 0 is default android user sdcard and is where /sdcard is mounted to
For your example.
Start > my computer > nexus 4 > internal storage
Make a new folder called Com.MyApp.001
Open folder
Paste MyFile.x
That will put the file at /sdcard/Com.MyApp.001/MyFile.x

[Q] "Data folder" missing in Windows

Hi,
I have a Galaxy Note 2 and a Nexus 7 32GB 3G.
They are both rooted and both are running custom roms.
Note 2 is running Omega Rom, Nexus 7 running Slimbean.
Both have usb debugging turned on.
I have the samsung drivers installed for both.
I have them both "Connected as a Media Device".
When I connect the Note 2 to my windows 8 pc I get full access to the data folder and all the system files.
When I connect the Nexus 7 to my windows 8 pc I do not even see the data folder, I see everything BUT the data folder.
What gives? Anyway to enable this without having to using Android commander etc...
Is this a feature of Omega rom that Slimbean is missing?
Thanks!

The Nexus 7 mounts as MTP. You will not have access to certain directories. The Note 2 is mounting as USB mass storage, it seems.

Thanks, possible to mount the Nexus 7 as a USB mass storage device? What determines how it's mounted?

I seem to have found the answer in another thread:

Mass storage is possible when the sdcard volume is actually a separate disk. On the Nexus 10 this is an "emulated" sdcard and cannot use USB mass storage safely because that protocol gives exclusive control to PC.

I'm guessing it's the same with the Nexus 7 and it's an "emulated" sdcard?

Tired of Media Transfer Protocol (MTP) - Nexus 4

I'm tired of this sh*t on my Nexus 4. Lots of crashes on Windows 7/8... and when I download something to my phone using aTorrent, ttorrent or something, it don't update my new files. I can't see them in windows explorer, until I reboot the Nexus... Plus I can't stream the files or mount a drive letter. If at least I could create a vfat partition or something in the internal memory, or windows could read the android file system, would be great.
MTP sucks, we just have to deal with it. I use Ubuntu and I install go-mtpfs and it work similar to regular file transfer, but its not perfect either. I have yet to find the perfect solution, except adb command line transfer.
You can use an app such as SD Rescan https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.uberullu.rescansd to avoid rebooting your Nexus to refresh the file contents on MTP.
You could put an FTP server on your Nexus and use an FTP client on your PC and transfer files by wireless. It's slower but more accurate.

Data loss after transferring

Hello, I really have no clue and hope you can help me. I even don't know how to search the problem.
Yesterday I wanted to transfer my DCIM folder with lots of photos and videos to my PC using STRG-X. I already had one DCIM folder there, so I chosen "integrate datas in this folder".
I left my PC and when I came back, I couldn't find even one picture on my PC neither on my phone.
Still, the phone says 24,17 of 24,64 GB on internal memory occupied.
Where could the files have gone? And more important, is there a way to dig, where the occupied space is and to retrieve these important files?
I am happy about any help! Thanks!
First question I have is, we're you transferring the DC I'M folder from the phone's micro SD?

Hello,
first I transferred the DCIM folder of the external micro sd which only contained 6 photos. Then the folder which got lost is the DCIM folder on internal storage.
Addon: when i open the explorer now in win 10, the windows applications crash and reload after 2 seconds. it used to open a "shortly used" tab; luckily I got a direct link on the desktop to a specific folder from where i can navigate.
It seems win 10 messed up something...

Ah ha! You're using Windows 10. I read on another forum here that another user was having issues with accessing their Note 4 via USB (MTP) while using Windows 10. I can't remember how they got around things though.

Hello,
There is a possibility that internal memory card has some kind of corruption in boot record or file system itself, which is usually fat32 file system on those media devices. It is difficult to diagnose it without physically looking at it. Our company has dealt with such data loss situations before and can attempt to recover lost images. Do you know if this phone internal memory or is it some kind of micro sd card or sd card inside of the phone?
