Dead Pixel on Camera - Nexus 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just got my Nexus 4 (16GB) after being in Limbo 2 since Monday and when I got it today and tested the camera, there was a black mark/dot on the camera. It appears on photos and anything that accesses the camera. I've already called up Google and placed an RMA, but I'm curious if anyone else has this issue?

That's bizarre. I've honestly never seen anything like that before.

Yeah, this is the first time I've ever seen this before. I didn't even know it was possible to get a dead pixel there.

Very strange indeed, maybe there is a dust spec stuck inside the lens

I think it's probably something very small stuck to the glass of the camera. Can camera's even have dead pixels?

take more photos and we can make this into a game of find the black spot!

My phone has a rattling sound when shook, or picked up quick, tapped....
Then... i started focusing with the camera and the camera focusing started to make clicking and locking sounds....

Yeh it doesn't look like a dead pixel. It looks like a speck of dust/dirt..

looks like a dead pixel to me. i had the same on my Galaxy Nexus, but the dot wasnt as big as yours. Proceed with the RMA and get a new one

How about trying to take some reference pictures. Get a sheet of paper with a grid on it and take a photo then give the camera a good (but careful) shake, then take the same photo from the same place and see if it has moved. If so, you know it's dust.
Not sure how that helps cos you can't get at the camera to clean it out. I suspect you'll need to RMA it either way

Yea just call Play Support. I confirmed with a rep today that they have phones in stock. Just be prepared to have them place a pending charge on your card for the amount of the phone while waiting for the warranty process.

Pretty much this, except my replacement hasn't shipped out yet it even though I place the order on Monday evening.

Seems like it was just dust as the black mark is no longer there.

Glass screen is not what I expected W/Pics

Not sure if its my phone and it needs to go back.
At the earpiece there is a flat spot that runs across and then another one just below it.
Seems like the process to get the curve threw them a little since its wavy all over but that is something you have to look for and can look past. The earpiece area is what I am most concerned with. Would like to know if others are seeing this.
would you be kind enough to post a picture?
Probably have to pull out the gear to do that but will be taking pics of the vibrant tomorrow so can do it then.
If you look at the speaker and then to the right and left of it there is a flat spot that runs through the glass from side to side if that makes sense.
Either way I will get pics up tomorrow.
post pic..
I don't see anything on mine.
Here are the pics.

It could be designed into the screen but there is another line under it and its not real pretty when the phone is sitting on a desk and you see that. Guess I am just used to the flat smooth screens like the other galaxy s phones.
Is it like, indented into the glass? Looks strange
Mine doesn't look like that. Mine is smooth throughout.
Ok I see it in the pics. That kinda stinks I thought Google said the design was to be the screen blending in to the phone. Bummer.
Going to the store tomorrow and checking out others. If it was a common issue I would just deal with it. Oh well.

It is. Its a flat spot and I can see why its there with the speaker hole there and the cam and prox sensors. Seems they could make a smooth transition or I got a dud.
Take it back and get a new one.
Seems like a hardware defect, I don't see that on mine.

I also noticed that on the first one I got, although not as defined. The issue I had was with the plastic ring around the screen. It was deformed in a few areas. I returned it for another one. This ones perfect. I suggest you do the same.

I have it too.. but not as bad as yours. I have to really use the glare to see it.
I have the same thing...cant notice unless it has light glare on it.
I think pics make it look worse but you can always return it.
Maybe it's flat cuz of the front camera and the light sensors.
I can't tell on mine, unless i have light reflecting on it (like in your pictures)

Thats what I am wondering. I had to use the light to get it in the pics. I deal with glass all day so see these things more then the average person. The bottom is nice and smooth . but the top is a different story. I wonder if others have this and just don't notice it. I hope not but maybe the pics will help others see what I am seeing and give a definite answer.
Either way I am going to go check out some others at BB tomorrow and will report back with what I find.
It may not be a issue at all and part of the design of the phone.
same here but i didnt notice it until you mentioned it.
No problems here on mine. Weird.

I have two/three faint white /yellow lines running vertically down the screen, (look where the line separates GPS & sound and follow it all the way down) just reliased it last night watching a movie...Took it to CPW today compared to the one they had on display. They confirmed it but found that SGS2's were ALL sold out in central London and only place they had left was St.James Park and told me to wait until next week giving me a phone number for stock supplies and told me to ring and reserve one at my CPW when it was available. Looks like its very popular =)
Have a look yourselves, also I really don't know what to do, send it back whenever they get it in stock or wait for the SGS 2 with NFC in and then get it replaced...Will the original U.K SGS 2 get phased out in time? & will NFC phones be same price and that an exchange be possible?
Meantime see if you guys spot anything weird on your screens. Can see it best if you have the notification bar all the way down. Sorry for the bad quality photo.
What shall I do? NFC then swap it for a new one? Or do it next week? :S
I've been starting at this for a while and I can't see anything. ¬_¬
Think you need a bigger picture tbh
Screen is still purrrrrrrrrfect here.
lol carnt see note, and whats with the nfc???? it will be a while till that ever gets used in the uk (an almost pointless feature if you ask me).

is this some sort of Troll joke?, I cannot see anything on any of the pics, even if I copy them into photoshop and ramp up the colour. Put them into paint and use arrows to show us these dodgy areas?
Type *#0*# on the dialler and bring up one of the screen tests to get a clearer picture for us.
I see it bairly but it might be on of those thing u need to see in person photos wont do justice or use a better camera not a cellphone pic.....return it if you're not happy

If I take my goodwill glasses on there might be a slightly brigher line of pixels running down the path he is talking about.
OP, after staring at your second batch of pics for quite a while I can see what you mean but it is soooooo unnoticeable I really had to make an effort to discover it. I doubt if I had it on mine I would notice it. Perhaps its more noticeable in person? If not then maybe the reason everyone says its perfect.
If its quite noticeable I would get a replacement till it is not there.
Definitely noticeable in the second set of pics. Easily.
dk206 - from the pics you posted it seems like the left half of your screen is darker/slightly different colour than the rest of the screen, is it just my imagination or you can confirm it?
Asking because I posted about this problem, which I'm having with my SGS2.

Thanks. Yes you're right guys photos don't do any justice. You guys need to come see it. The guy at the CPW saw it straight away and told me to queue up for a replacement but non in cpw in central london now. All sold out. They put my visit on the system so I don't have to explain and waste my time next time I pop in for thr replacement. But I haven't dexided whether to go now or go when NFC sgsII arrives which hopefully will be in 2weeks time? :s

Spontaneous screen crack sg3

Hiya guys I've had the most interesting thing happen to my .sg3 yesterday. The only way to explain it is as a spontaneous screen crack! My phone just cracked by itself!! Yes without a lie! It's the most microsceptic crack I've seen and after a few minutes looking at it i decided to measure the location and it's exactly in the middle of the panel! No one believes me and people think I'm stupid. i was just wondering if anyone else has had this issue? I've done some research and have found that other Samsung phones have done this but there isn't allot of info about it.

Is this really a thing? I mean that this can happen, I have never heard about anything like this before.
Show a pic of the crack if possible?
Well from what info I've gathered on the web it is very rare!
Sent from my GT-I9300 using XDA
probably because of the curved glass. Curved things tend to bend when they reach certain point. the gorilla glass 2 being thinner than its predecessor should crack easier especially when bent. Send it back to Samsung, the crack seems natural and is a Samsung fault rather

I believe you. My friends AMOLED screen crached but the glass was perfectly fine on his Droid RAZR. It was extremely weird and did not make any bit of sense.
Well see the thing is i didn't even move from my desk at work when this happened! It's so so strange. What would be the best way of contacting Samsung about this , because atm I've talked to official Samsung repair people and they all say I'm crazy and 3 just told me I'm a liar and that i broke it on purpose. You should go to the 3 store and show them the device because there is no way anyone can make a perfect straight crack like this on purpose/accidentally.

[Q] Nexus 7 Screen magically cracks..

The most "wonderful" thing happened today.
Here's the story:
I bought my Nexus 7 tablet a few months ago. I love this tablet, it's by far the best I've used. Today, I placed my tablet on my table after using it, and turned on some music on my laptop and danced around. It did not fall, didn't fly off, or run and fall down (what?). It was there the ENTIRE time. I then went back after a snack, turned off my music and decided to watch something on Netflix in bed. But one thing alarmed me. The bottom portion (equal to where the camera is on the top) had a gross crack, which extended in three sections to about the bottom half of the screen.
What. The. Heck. ??? Was what I promptly said as I stared at the crack. Now normally I'd shake it off and say "If I can use it, it's fine." HOWEVER, I can use the upper portion and some of the middle, I CANNOT use the bottom half. What does that mean? WELL guess what. It means I can't press the home, back, or other button. So I basically can't use it. Not a good idea after all, is it? I also can't type some letters. If it was in the toppish, I'd be fine with it. But this is ridiculous.
Funny, this happened before with a certain Dell laptop. Closed it. Placed on table after going upstairs. Lifted screen. Huge black gash on it.
Amusing on how cheap products are these days. For paying $199 I wasn't expecting pure gold, but this? Is it THAT sensitive? Please.. what kind of luck do I have.
Now to where I need help. What can I do now?? I sold my cracked laptop for $150, got a $50 from my Dad, and now it just CRACKS. And he woulldn't believe me after the other laptop. Now let me do say I take great care of my things. My phone has no cracks, or dents, or scratches and I've had it even longer. Is it possible to fix it? Please help. why me.. Is there some way I could move where the 3 buttons are? ugh.
You could buy a OTG cable and use a mouse on your nexus 7. As long you can see the screen to click on things. You can pickup a OTG cable for couple dollars on amazon or eBay.
If you bought the tablet from Google store. Try contacting them about trying to get it fixed. If you bought it else where you would have to contact Asus about it.

[Q] Dropped Nexus 4 - What's wrong with my screen?

So I was unlucky enough to drop my N4 before I was able to get a case for it. I dropped it from my lap while getting out of a taxi so it wasn't a full on drop. At first I thought the only damage was cosmetic - a nick on the chrome trim on the top right corner of the phone.
However afterwards I noticed a small white/bright spot on the screen near that corner where it looks like the backlight is bleeding through. It's most notice-able when the screen is showing something white, less notice-able with colors (red, green, blue etc), and completely fine when showing black.
I've checked some info and it doesn't seem like it's a dead pixel, and just seems overall larger than a dead pixel. At the same time it doesn't seem like a lit pixel either since it's not visible on black. At the moment I'm very thankful that the phone is still very much use-able, but would like to find out what the problem is, and perhaps how intensive a repair this would involve since it is a bit annoying sometimes.
Anyone have had a similar problem or have any ideas?
Is normal. Stop obsessing about it. No phone is perfect. Even my wife's iPhone 4s has defects. If you are looking for flaws, you will find them, guaranteed. Just use your phone like you used to.

Yeah I'm definitely learning to live with it. It may also not look so bad in a photo but it's still pretty noticeable when you're holding the phone in your hand - especially when I'm scrolling around and you can see this static white spot that doesn't move.
Just overall interested in what the problem is as well. I've seen dead pixels and also phones that were dropped where the screen looks completely fubar'd... but haven't been able to find any examples where the screen is like this.
RMA if it's that annoying. Assuming ur phone doesn't look too damaged that they'll say it was your fault.
I do see a few scratches on the screen. Google may not RMA for that reason. If there is another reason like a defect, use that to RMA. IML no Nexus 4 is perfect. I have RMA'd about 4 times till now with a new reason every time. Now after completely blocking my credit card, I have learned to live with an imperfect Nexus 4

Where do you see the scratches? I haven't even noticed them!
I guess from the replies I should learn to live with it then. Thing is I really thought this was due to the drop, but it's also possible it was a defect that I didn't notice... I saw some N4s with the light bleed problem, but were from the edges of the screen, that's why I really thought this was due to damage.
Send it back in, duh. It's still under warranty. :crying:
