Very odd issue, since I got my beautiful Nexus 4 on Friday -
When my Mrs calls me the quality is terrible...almost unusable - when I call her back its as clear as day.
I've done some fun trouble shooting - different phones- settings and the likes
All I can seem to find is that when one of us is on 2G/ edge the call quality is fine the problem only happens when she calls me and we are both on 3G or HSDPA
Weirdest thing ever.
She's using an Xperia U on t-mobile (EE UK) and I'm using a Nexus 4 on Orange (EE UK)
I've got a slight inckeling it may be HD voice calling causing the issue as my previous phone (Samsung GS3) had this and it was great - I've already spoken to Orange (EE) T-mobile (a slightly different team of EE) and Google... no help so far!
Anyone have any other ideas for trouble shooting or how this issue can be fixed short of turning off my 3G?!
I would love to have that feature in my phone as well ...

.... Thanks for the assistance....
It appears to be an APN setting on both handsets - I reset them to default and it seemed better...not great but tolerable
Hope this helps someone in the future

can anyone advise as to how bad the antenna problem with the handset is (experienced by users at vodafone)? i am looking to get a handset sim free and perhaps use o2 or t-mobile instead. if anyone has the handset and is with a different operator i would like to hear your experience using the handset.
thanks.
with voda, v annoyed. only let down to a perfect phone, happens 60-70% of the time sending a text will come up with the annoying ''message not sent retrying, then need to wait a min for signal to reappear
sorry to hear that mate, i read some of the comments posted on the voda forums about the handset...lots of different ideas going around as to what the problem was...looking at the last page of what was quite a long thread there didn't seem to be any real conclusion as such.
i was wondering if anyone had the handset on a different network?
Mine is fine in australia on optus. Only times I lose all reception is in actual dead zones where no one on optus gets reception such as when driving in rural areas

No problems for me yet on non-branded Legend
I have legend on o2 UK. Have
only experienced a message not sent problem a couple of times over a couple of months. Having said that, o2's data network is crumbling at present with iPhone demand. They seem to have recently introduced a 5-10 second delay on end queries at peak time.

I personally haven't experienced problems with SMS (I don't use it much anyway). But the general reception quality of Legend is quite poor compared to other handsets I have or had (Nokias, HTC Magic, Motorola Droid)
I have never had reception problems with my legend in belguim

No problem at all with unbranded legend at Spain.
I'm on Voda in the UK with a Legend and have all sorts of problems with antenna.
Am waiting for either Froyo or the update firmware update thats floating about too see if that solves the problem. It MAY be software in this case, unlike Apple!
I have used legend in Serbia on Telenor network and in Montenegro on Telenor network too. In Serbia i have reception issue, weak signal on some spots but in Montenegro i didn't have any problems.
I'm in Canada with Bell and when I hold the phone at the bottom (like the iPhone 4 problem)... I lose antenna signal. I just bought a plastic case and it seems to fix the problem but not completely.

You can measure the efect of holding Legend in the following way:
1.- Select: Menu->Settings->About->Network (apologies if it is similar but not exactly the same: my Legend is in Spanish)
2.- Look at the value: Signal Strength. When lower this value is, betther signal strenth. In my case, if I put Legend on a table I get: 87 dBm. When I hold in my hand: -99 dBm. So, holding efect is "very" low.
Maybe 3g network in your area is not very good. Try switching to 2g.
No problems here with unbranded Legend on Indosat network in Indonesia using Handcent for texting.
I have an unbranded HTC Legend brought from UK and have been using it in Dubai (UAE) on etisalat network. I have been having quite alot of problems with the signal.
Hi, I have a Desire Z running stock ROM on Android 2.3.3. The software number is 2.42.161.20. I am on the Vodafone UK network and live in Mid-Sussex (southern England).
My Cell reception is quite frankly rubbish - most of the time I do not have enough of a signal to send a text, let alone make a call.
The weird thing is my Wife has an original Desire, also on Vodafone UK and has no problems at all.
To put this into perspective I am looking at the two devices side by side at the moment and her Desire shows 100% signal - my Desire Z shows zero!
I know the phone is generally OK as I work in the centre of London and pretty much get a 100% signal strength the whole time there (although everyone seems to get 100% signal in Central London regardless of Network!).
Does anyone know if this is a fault with my Desire Z (a bit of dodgy software/firmware perhaps)? If so is there anything I can do about it??
I am a big fan of physical keyboards so was hoping to hang on to my Desire Z for quite a while yet - my Contract runs out in November and I was going to move over to a 30day rolling SIM only deal, such as Three or GiffGaff, however there may not be much point if I can't make calls/send texts! (I'll have to sign up on another contract to get a new phone!).
Any hints, tips or tricks that anyone can suggest would be gratefully received.
root the phone so you can change the radio to the one she has, after this you should be fine

Thanks for replying!
Sorry if this is a daft question - but how do I find out which radio she has?
As I said she has a regular original HTC Desire. It too is still running stock. It has Android Version 2.2, software number 2.33.161.2 and kernel version 2.6.32.15-g2633d94
I have never rooted a phone before (not through fear of messing it up - just never felt the need) so I am not totally up on the process.
I take it from your post that the 'Radio' is the bit that deals with the signal strength then and it is generic across numerous devices?
Thanks again.
there are maybe 10 diffrent cellular radios that can be used with our phones, you can compare yours and hers by powering on and holding the camera button

Hello,
I am from India and I'm using Idea Cellular.
I've been using N4 since Jan, initially it had 4.2 on it, after that I updated to 4.2.1 and later 4.2.2
For the last 6-7 weeks most of my calls were getting dropped, sometime just after connecting.
I tried a lot of solutions:
1. Switching off mobile data
2. Switching off wifi
3. Device reset
and then making calls.
None of the above solved the call drop issue. I finally requested for a replacement device and received it today.
So I put my sim in new phone, copy all my data from Google Play and I make my first call, 12 mins and the call drops again.
Now if this was a hardware issue, the odds of me again getting a faulty device should have been very less. But well here we are - one more faulty device.
If its not, is there any software fix or anything other way of solving this?
Did you try checking with a different SIM?
Hardware issue with your particular phone. RMA
Maybe is your sim cause I can talk for over a hour and nothing happens

Got it on my HopShopGo US address and shipped it to India. Had to pay Rs 2776 for Customs/Octroi and some $28 for shipping.
Google has blocked $350 on my card and will reimburse it once I send them my old device back.
So disappointed with Nexus 4.

I've had mine for about a month and have not experienced any of these issues. Yes, I've had a dropped call or two but it's been in areas that have a weak signal and my previous phones would also drop calls. I'm on the T-Mobile USA network.
It might as well be a problem with your service provider, and it might be temporary, you should check that possibility. If not, then the SIM card might be faulty as well, try it in a different phone and see if calls are dropped.
Tried switching already.. No avail..
Main things that bug me is wifi.. Don't know what the heck is wrong with it..

Using N4 since 3 months in Mumbai with Vodafone never had problem like that. May its your device or SIM or network is getting worse at this time in your area.
High Hopes
I feel ya, man. My phone usage pattern is pics, video, and browsing mostly. The Nexus 4 has failed me on multiple occasions with dropped data and terrible reception. I have tried changing my APN settings, I've even called ATT and confirmed with them that I had the correct data plan allotted.
I know it's the Nexus 4 and not my carrier because my husband, who uses a half-broken iphone 4 on the same network gets better reception and network connectivity in the same places and at the same times. I found myself using his phone a lot of the time to do simple tasks like browse online because I'm tired of re-connecting on my Android.
I still don't want to go back to iPhone because I'm bored with iOS at the moment, so now, when I'm researching my next Android phone, I'm going to make sure to consider radio signal quality.

I have seen issues with SIM working on one phone but acting weird on another. Try checking with 2-3 different SIM cards of various service providers. If all fail, you will know the device is faulty.
FYI, I am on Airtel MH Nexus 4 and haven't faced any issue.
I have the same issue, the call drops when making or receiving a call, and it happens after 20 seconds to 1 minute... The odd thing is I didn't have these problems when I was using it in the states.. Just had them when I went back home..

No issues for me too. From Mumbai, on Vodafone network. In fact the reception is better on Nexus 4 than my previous phone which was a Motorola Electrify.
i'm from Mumbai, using Tata Docomo, and have no problems with my nexus 4!
Try your sim in another phone now.. Might well be your carrier

I have recently swapped SIM on Nexus 4, from BSNL to AirTel. When I was using BSNL, 3G was working fine. Once I switched the BSNL SIM with AirTel SIM. I got 3G the first day (14th March 2013) and after that I was never able to get 3G till now. I even got a duplicate SIM thinking that earlier SIM might be the problem as I had converted it to micro by cutting it. But new micro SIM doesn't seem to be helping either.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have sprint version and live in Westchester county /Bronx border. When in calls I experience some static and a popping every now and again. Only in call on speaker or earpiece, all video and audio playback is clear, so I know its not speaker related. I have done numerous hard/soft resets, tech support reset my network, updated profile/prl. Still the same, weird thing is, when roaming calls are crystal clear. Went to the sprint store today and they are saying its network related(don't really believe it) since my 4 year old has more knowledge than some of their CSR s. However I would just like to know if anyone else in my vicinity is dealing with sane issue? I also have iPhone 5s and HTC one that have never done. Any thoughts, help, would be appreciated.

I noticed this to and I am in Putnam county and work in Westchester. My S4 did it sometimes to though. Although the G2 seems to be more frequent.

If it helps I made two calls today and they sounded great. I want to assume it is the towers.
hi there,
is there a way to reduce the hiss/static/crackling noise on the background that I hear when the other person talks, especially noticeable when on speaker? we have 2 Samsung S5 and it seems to be on both phones.
I just did a test calling my landline and the noise is there. weirdly enough, also on my blackberry there's a similar noise. does it depend by the cell tower? maybe is not the S5 itself but i found other people saying there's this static/hiss noise on the background...it's really weird.
thanks
Gabrio
it's like a swish to be more precise....
If it's happening with 2 S5s, and a blackberry, I'd put my money on the cell tower
Try travelling far enough away that both the phone making the call, and the one receiving it, are using a totally different tower

yeah, actually I have just heard that our network (o2) is implementing the following - maybe is already old elsewhere - "HD Voice" and also Voice over LTE (VoLTE) is undergoing testing on some networks.
