can anyone advise as to how bad the antenna problem with the handset is (experienced by users at vodafone)? i am looking to get a handset sim free and perhaps use o2 or t-mobile instead. if anyone has the handset and is with a different operator i would like to hear your experience using the handset.
thanks.
with voda, v annoyed. only let down to a perfect phone, happens 60-70% of the time sending a text will come up with the annoying ''message not sent retrying, then need to wait a min for signal to reappear
sorry to hear that mate, i read some of the comments posted on the voda forums about the handset...lots of different ideas going around as to what the problem was...looking at the last page of what was quite a long thread there didn't seem to be any real conclusion as such.
i was wondering if anyone had the handset on a different network?
Mine is fine in australia on optus. Only times I lose all reception is in actual dead zones where no one on optus gets reception such as when driving in rural areas

No problems for me yet on non-branded Legend
I have legend on o2 UK. Have
only experienced a message not sent problem a couple of times over a couple of months. Having said that, o2's data network is crumbling at present with iPhone demand. They seem to have recently introduced a 5-10 second delay on end queries at peak time.

I personally haven't experienced problems with SMS (I don't use it much anyway). But the general reception quality of Legend is quite poor compared to other handsets I have or had (Nokias, HTC Magic, Motorola Droid)
I have never had reception problems with my legend in belguim

No problem at all with unbranded legend at Spain.
I'm on Voda in the UK with a Legend and have all sorts of problems with antenna.
Am waiting for either Froyo or the update firmware update thats floating about too see if that solves the problem. It MAY be software in this case, unlike Apple!
I have used legend in Serbia on Telenor network and in Montenegro on Telenor network too. In Serbia i have reception issue, weak signal on some spots but in Montenegro i didn't have any problems.
I'm in Canada with Bell and when I hold the phone at the bottom (like the iPhone 4 problem)... I lose antenna signal. I just bought a plastic case and it seems to fix the problem but not completely.

You can measure the efect of holding Legend in the following way:
1.- Select: Menu->Settings->About->Network (apologies if it is similar but not exactly the same: my Legend is in Spanish)
2.- Look at the value: Signal Strength. When lower this value is, betther signal strenth. In my case, if I put Legend on a table I get: 87 dBm. When I hold in my hand: -99 dBm. So, holding efect is "very" low.
Maybe 3g network in your area is not very good. Try switching to 2g.
No problems here with unbranded Legend on Indosat network in Indonesia using Handcent for texting.
I have an unbranded HTC Legend brought from UK and have been using it in Dubai (UAE) on etisalat network. I have been having quite alot of problems with the signal.

Hi all,
I am thinking of ordering teh Xperia from mobiles or o2 direct, having already placed an order for hte HD but o2 are taking a ****ing age getting it "approved" or delaying it for whatever reason.
Question is - although i like the look of the xperia i've heard a bad things about the reception and as I'll be using the xperia as a business phone *calls and synching outlook contacts/calendar etc. will the poor reception prove too much of a problem? I woudl only be getting the phone on the o2 network.
I use Vodafone, and I came from using a N95 to an X1 and have noticed a downgrade in signal strength.
I suppose it depends on where you live, if u have had reception problems previous then going to a X1 might be the same maybe worse.
I am absolutely loving this device. It’s taking some time to get used to, but WOW I have all but praises for this phone (apart from the signal strength of course).
My advice would be to get the phone over the internet or telesales. At lease then you should have 14 days to evaluate the phone (that’s what Vodafone UK do – I’m on the 4th day in now)
What I can say, is that the bars on the phone are a bit deceptive, and when it has none/1 bar, I can still make a perfectly good phone call.

I am on Orange UK and get FULL signal strength at home and 3 bars when out and about. I think that's pretty much what I expect from any phone. I really think it all depends on the network and your location, NOT the phone. O2 PAYG sim more or less the same.
Don't let other users experiences put you off. It really is a great phone!
It can still depend on the phone, but then on each separate unit.

I second this. Its an amazing phone, try it for 14 days and see if the signal will be a problem. It will get better, with radio upgrades and this rumoured antenna upgrade, but for now the signal is passable for me.

Damn I can't seem tofind it. It was just a rumor from another user for an antenna upgrade in January 2009 that SE were going to do.
Probably just wishful thinking.
I too have been rather put off by all the negative comments re: poor reception. Although my X1, now 5 day old, only shows 3 bars of reception most of the time, the actual call quality is fine - its just that I've become very aware of any deterioration in sound quality after reading the negative posts.
I'd echo what everyone else has said, try it for yourself & see what its like....just ignore what the phone says its reception is!
It seems this isn't an unknown problem with some other HTC devices and is often improved with a firmware upgrade (at the slight expense of battery life)
Paul
I have no reception Issues I have X1i and X1a in USA
I almost always have GSM, but 3g is sketchy. If you compare it to a nokia E90 with the same sim in, its always 2 bars less.
3G only and no problems with the reception. Most of the time 1 bar less than my old HTC Trinity, which had very, very nice reception.
i've been on to carphonewarehouse today and they say my lack of 3G is the xperia. when I stand next to a colleague with an iphone, they have full 3G and I'm stuck with crappy Edge! I've got a week to decide but at the moment it looks like the xperia is going back.
I suspect those people with good 3G don't live in the UK.
I get really good HSPDA (on Vodafone UK) whilst at work and it's not too bad whilst at home but I prefer to have 2g with Wifi.
I dont see a problem with reception compared to other phones using the same sim, it's hanging onto the signal that's more of an issue. It can go from 2 to no signal fairly quickly without moving the handset.
Comparing number of bars across different makes of phone is not sensible as one manufacturer may use more bars to show the same strength of signal.

reception is poor on the x1 my work ordered 150 units which all went back. SE said they will have a new revision Jan09 a rom upgrade will not fix this issue. They need to revise the antenna. I sent my phone back today as at work it could not hold a 3g signal were my HTC Diamond PRO does both on the same network.
The X1 is a good phone but 2 problems for me it is not a keeper the bad keyboard

surprising people are having so many problems with poor reception, i had full reception at home, on my sony ericsson p1i and with my x1i i still get full signal and hsdpa. Still get more or less full signal when i'm not at home. I'm on O2 UK

Hello All
Is anyone having lower signal with the Hero? I have downloaded CellFinder and it reports a signal of -109Db most of the time, (1 bar). sometimes I get to 2, 3 bars but never full. I mate who is also on orange gets 4 bars on his win mob phone.
On Orange website it says i should have excellent reception where I am at (work).
Just wondering if anyone else has these issues.
This mate is getting his Hero tomorrow so i will compare and if he gets signal then i will get a new one off orange.
My signal is a bit rubbish to where I live - The diamond was a bit better but my SE 995 does hold the signal at home but even that still drops.
I was thinking of backing the device
I blame Orange. Going to be sending mine back in next couple of days and getting the T-Mobile one.

This is more of a HTC issue IMO as its the same with t-mobile where I live with HTC handsets.
so do the majority of people have bad signal?

Sending it back under the 7 day agreement?
Yeh, I'm having signal issues too, I'v had the handset replaced, issue still remains.
Yup, received it last Thursday so have a couple of days before I need to ring them. Hopefully going to still have the Hero when T-Mobile stores get the G2 in so I can use it as a bargaining tool :-D, nothing says I'm prepared to leave T-Mobile like having already signed up with Orange.
I've been using HTC phones for the past 6 years and have no real complaints about signal strength on T-Mobile. Very rarely have no signal and usually have a fast 3G signal. The Hero on Orange is terrible where I am. Unfortunately can't try my T-Mobile sim in the Hero as it's locked.
Did someone not say on this board that they have unlocked their Hero. If you are listening, have you tried other sims? do they get a better reception?
Just remember its 7 working days and not including the delivery day not just 7 days - so if I got my phone last Wednesday - I have until this Friday to contact Orange about the return.
I'm just undecided as the iPhone but not 3Gs is coming Oranges way soon.
@ home
on my diamond i got 3/4 bar.....now i get only 1
my diamond was the same till i flashed the radio
This looks to be a firmware issue with the hero. Similar to the prob iPhone 3G had when it first went on sale.
Hope HTC get on it.
Crikey my signals S**T hot!
I have a H most of the day at work which normally i`m lucky if i have 3G.
I suppose now your gonna ask with which phone i had this with..
I mostly get H but only 1, 2 bar.

LOL Yeh just looked i have 1/2 bars also!!!
I was not happy with the signal either. Decided to bite the bullet and return it. Back on the kaiser until a: the signal is solved, b: local syncing is solved and c: copilot is 'solved'.
I need 'real' satnav. Come on Garmin
Shame to hear another singal prob with HTC again. My diamond was crap to begin with but the updates sorted it in the end. My Hero is due to be delivered on Thursday.
Can those experiancing signal issues also state what network they are on. Maybe Voda and O2 on the lower bands my differ from Orange and T-Mobile on the higher?
Thanks.. Mark
Well, I'm sticking with mine as I only have signal issues at home in my old stone built house when downstairs - otherwise the signal seems OK and I get mainly (H)
I was on Orange (I still am but with a Kaiser).
I'm using Vodafone. Good signal Strength with me.
My partner and myself have been having real issues on my DHD and her Desire S with reception on Orange. Lots of times the reception will just die completely for a while before coming back and several instances of going straight to voicemail even though phone doesn't ring.
I've done some testing and noticed that if we change them to GSM only, this doesn't happen and reception stays solid. Only problem is that we then obviously only get basic GPRS when mobile and now 3G and therefore have to switch back to WCDMA.
Anybody else come across this or have some solutions?
Many thanks

what area are you in? I have had trouble with orange in Canary Wharf in the past and it was due to my phone connecting to a mast which wasn't working. So I was connected to 3G, but got no calls, sms or data.. LOL.. 3G at the moment is very unstable at orange and I think it is to do with the merge or something with T-Mobile.
Just contact orange on your area and see if there is anything they can do to sort it out
In Exeter but seem to get it most places I go. I do mean to keep trying the o2 sim from my work iPhone to test the difference.
Never had network issues with o2 and kind of regret moving to Orange but hey ho, done now

My friend and I had same issues with our desires when they came out, both on orange and same symptoms. Like someone replied, we were connecting to a dodgy mast in our area. Switching to gsm all ok. Call orange.

Are Orange likely to be able to do anything though?

From post 279 onwards..
Hi, I have a Desire Z running stock ROM on Android 2.3.3. The software number is 2.42.161.20. I am on the Vodafone UK network and live in Mid-Sussex (southern England).
My Cell reception is quite frankly rubbish - most of the time I do not have enough of a signal to send a text, let alone make a call.
The weird thing is my Wife has an original Desire, also on Vodafone UK and has no problems at all.
To put this into perspective I am looking at the two devices side by side at the moment and her Desire shows 100% signal - my Desire Z shows zero!
I know the phone is generally OK as I work in the centre of London and pretty much get a 100% signal strength the whole time there (although everyone seems to get 100% signal in Central London regardless of Network!).
Does anyone know if this is a fault with my Desire Z (a bit of dodgy software/firmware perhaps)? If so is there anything I can do about it??
I am a big fan of physical keyboards so was hoping to hang on to my Desire Z for quite a while yet - my Contract runs out in November and I was going to move over to a 30day rolling SIM only deal, such as Three or GiffGaff, however there may not be much point if I can't make calls/send texts! (I'll have to sign up on another contract to get a new phone!).
Any hints, tips or tricks that anyone can suggest would be gratefully received.
root the phone so you can change the radio to the one she has, after this you should be fine

Thanks for replying!
Sorry if this is a daft question - but how do I find out which radio she has?
As I said she has a regular original HTC Desire. It too is still running stock. It has Android Version 2.2, software number 2.33.161.2 and kernel version 2.6.32.15-g2633d94
I have never rooted a phone before (not through fear of messing it up - just never felt the need) so I am not totally up on the process.
I take it from your post that the 'Radio' is the bit that deals with the signal strength then and it is generic across numerous devices?
Thanks again.
there are maybe 10 diffrent cellular radios that can be used with our phones, you can compare yours and hers by powering on and holding the camera button

Anyone else on Three having serious signal issues? - Wherever I go, no matter what City it is seriously poor goes to -95dBm tops at any given time. Been like this for a while now, even on my HTC One
However when I have tried my o2 sim card, my signal is full strength everywhere.. I wondered if maybe this could be solved by flashing Three's modem (H3G) to my phone. And Does anyone happen to have it? saves me downloading the firmware and extracting it.

Unfortunately I don't have the modem for you, however my signal hasn't been affected at all recently ! If anything its been quicker, Last night was on 10mbs using 3g/hspa - Give them a call, they are no doubt working on upgrading your services and didnt inform you via text

Well 4G is supposed to come here (York) next month, but my signal has been super poor for about 3-4 months now, was in London the other week and Leeds a few days ago and it was the same, internet is pretty intermittent also. Guess I'll have to ring them and shout at them again.
I drive around Bristol, South Wales, Swindon and down as far as Bournemouth streaming music via Google. Im using Three and have h+ 3/4 bars 99% of the time. No issues for me with signal.

Yeah worth a call, Like i said my signal and speed has been brill lately ! tip - remove your sim and turn the device off and on before you call otherwise they will just fob you off with that and get you to call back after or from another line !
2mb/s download speed - Some people would say thats 20mb connection
Not sure if its a good thing that my mobile phone has a better connection than my fixed landline
Sounds like sim could be dodgy! I'm in bournemouth and i'm getting Good speeds (19MB) and i travelled to wales and back and got pretty good speeds, average about 16MB but i have noticed that the Note 3 definitely doesn't get as good signal as the 1020 i have... For example, my note 3 will have no or one bar but my 1020 will have 2 or 3. And sometimes the Note 3 will display 3 or 4 bars but as soon as i go to call it says "not registered on network". Thats only out in the middle of nowhere (Wool, Wareham).
