Can't Get Debugging To Work On Nexus 7

I'm trying to run my app while debugging on my Nexus 7, but it always loads in the AVDs instead of on the tablet.
Here's my checklist of things I've done:
Went into the settings on the Nexus 7 and enabled USB Debugging.
Installed the official ASUS Nexus 7 drivers. When I connect it to my PC, Windows 7 64 bit pops up and says the Nexus 7 is connected and the drivers loaded successfully.
Connected it to my PC (Windows 7 64 bit) and it pops up and saying the Nexus 7 is connected and the drivers loaded successfully.
However Eclipse doesn't detect it at all. The app loads the AVD instead of it. And if I go to Run As->Run Configurations->Target, it's not listed. If I select Launch on all Compatible Devices/AVDs and choose Active Devices and then try to run, I get the error "No active compatible AVD's or devices found. Relaunch this configuration after connecting a device or starting an AVD".
The app is set to be compatible with Android 4.1.
Suggestions?

The only way I've ever gotten it to work is switching the 7 from a media device to a camera.

Strange. Unfortunately it still doesn't work for me. Same symptoms. Thanks though! Any other ideas?

I found I had to fiddle with the drivers a bit to get the proper adb connection. Check Device Manager and make sure it shows up under Android Phone->Android ADB Interface. If you see anything else you'll need to uninstall the offending driver and reinstall.

Ehhh...Crap. You're right. Device Manager shows Other Devices -> Nexus with a caution sign on it. Weird cause when I plug it in it'll ask me if I want to transfer photos and it'll mount it as a drive and everything....grrrrrr. This might be annoying.

I'm trying to remember exactly what I did to get the right driver to install. I think you need to uninstall the all drivers being used and then make sure that USB debugging is turned on in the Nexus before plugging it back in. I used the Wugfresh toolkit which includes tools to check what drivers are lurking around in your system.

Finally got it. Turned out, the driver files were no good. I got them from a link to Asus's site from another thread. I googled their site for different driver files and found the correct ones:

It should be a zip file with USB in the title.

I can confirm this, I switched it from MTP to PTP and installed the driver, and everything is working now. It's showing up in the ADB list.

Cant Get Drivers & Root Wont Work. PLEASE HELP
hey ive tried to root my devices for years and keep coming across the stupidest roadblock. i cant get the right drivers ever. it never finds them and i download them directly from the manufacter and it still wont work. i couldnt root my galaxy nexus because of this and now i cant root my nexus 7 because of this please help and let me know how to do this properly. i cant find any videos and know of no one who is having this issue except for my friend which also couldnt get the drivers for his galaxy nexus either....:crying:

Download the asus drivers and extract the zip file. Plug in your Nexus 7. Go to Device Manager -> the device (might be listed as an android device) -> Update driver. Browse to the extracted folder.
On the Nexus 7, make sure USB debugging is enabled. And, when it connects, change it from being connected as a media device to instead being a camera device.

Thanks. I ended up being able to do it with the one click root program it helped me get the drivers super happy. Now my galaxy nexus and nexus 7 are rooted. Haven't had something rooted since my Samsung galaxy s fascinate

Been at this fir 3 days. Installed, uninstalled drivers. Got ASUS drivers. Switched from Debugging on to off, then off to on. used Camera, used Media....The closest I come to seeing Nexus7 in Explorer or Computer is INTERNAL STORAGE/DCIM OR CAMERA.
I am unable to see any files, no matter what I do. So, now I must ask this: Must I be rooted to see android files? I doubt it, but I never used a Nexus before. Quite frankly, this tablet is awful for use with a PC. I need help-can u help me, pls.

Can I ask for your help guys? My Nexus 7 v1 is stuck on boot loop (either stuck on google screen or sometimes would proceed up to the nexus animation screen) and I've been trying to fix it with the Nexus Root Toolkit (NRT). I just have problem proceeding with the steps since the toolkit advices me to enable my device's USB DEBUGGING (open device , go to settings, then developer options etc) which I CANNOT POSSIBLY DO COS AGAIN, NEXUS IS JUST STUCKED ON BOOT LOOP.
Can you suggest OTHER ways I can enable USB Debugging in Nexus 7? I would greatly appreciate your help.

[HOWTO] Installing HTC Drivers for adb/fastboot on Windows 8

Mod Message: OP's link is down. Please search the comments to find other's mirror. But please remember to use AV software to scan before you proceed to install, in case of malware or virus!
Instructions to installing HTC Drivers on Windows8 64Bit:

1. Download the Windows7 (64 Bit) drivers here - R[COLOR="Red"]emoved[/COLOR]
2. Unzip to any location you want. Just remember where you put them.
3. Plug in your phone to your USB cable.
4. Open your Device Manager (Windows Key + X and select Device manager) and locate HTC under Other Devices and right click on it and select Update Driver Software
5. Select "Browse my computer for driver software"
6. Click Browse and then select the folder you unzipped with the drivers in it then click next.
7. It should now install your drivers and then in your device manager it will now show up "My HTC" under Android USB Devices.
Hope that helps anyone having troubles getting USB/HTC drivers working on Windows 8 (64bit).
*NOTE* I'm not sure if this will be the same for you guys but I had to plug my phone into USB slot 2. USB slot 3 would not work.

It took me quite a while of searching to actually find that guide but I'm glad I did otherwise I couldn't have unlocked my bootloader or rooted

Been trying to get the driver to work on my W8 laptop for my E3D. This worked for it after spending hours trying all sorts. Thanks a million. I will be sure to go through to the other thread and say thanks too.

If only I saw this before I spent hours last night trying to get adb to recognise my phone. I somehow got there in the end but this would've saved me a good two hours!

seems to work just fine on my win7 machine. any help with this?

i can't install a driver for the MTP device. should it be in that zip? i'm trying to get it to install from that directory and it says it can't find a driver for it....

Tried this technique and it still won't work.
Here's what I'm doing
- Uninstall all current drivers & HTC Sync
- Restart PC
- Your method exactly
- Restart PC
Phone when on normally connects to adb just fine,
but when I put it into the bootloader it takes around 15 seconds to detect it and then says it's unrecognised and gives the error below:
Device doesn't start. (Code 10)
A request for the USB BOS descriptor failed.
Any help would be appreciated. For now, I'm running a copy of W7 on an old 2.5" drive... not ideal.

Tried this technique and it still won't work.
@petedavison93 and the owner of this thread, did you guys find a fix to pete's issue as I'm having the same issue as Pete, please help!

Had the same issue and installed different drivers several times without luck.
It was fixed for me by simply plugging in the phone into an USB port at the motherboard. The front USB and additional USB3 ports at the PC were not working, when the device is booted to the bootloader. They are working with adb only, when the phone is running normal.
I am running Win8x64.

I have the HTC EVO V 4G (Virgin Mobile) The ONLY difference on my installation of the drivers was under Other Devices, instead of HTC mine was listed as EVO. Worked perfect first try..TY

Anyone happen to know where I can find some windows 7 32bit drivers. Windows 8 32bit isn't a fan of 64bit software.

It isn't a problem with the HTC drivers. It's the usb drivers from Ms for Intel 3.0 bus. I found a thread that I'm searching again for that give the instructions on replacing the signed ms driver with an unsigned win 7 64bit host controller driver. It's two files and you need to first allow unsigned drivers in windows security. Needless to say it's fine now on my 3 ports.

Kind of frustrating, I can't seem to get my computer to recognize the Nexus 7. I'm running Windows 7 64bit. I do have the Android SDK installed with 4.3 updated to the latest already. Can't imagine what could be triggering this... hmmm

Use the SDK manager to download the Google USB drivers. Head to device manager on your windows, update the driver for the nexus 7 which has an exclamation mark, and select the android SDK folder to install the drivers.
Hope it works for you.. That solved it for me.

Hmmm unfortunately still nothing. When I browse either the usb_driver folder or my SDK folder (with the Google USB drivers), I still get a "Windows was unable to install your Nexus 7, Windows could not find driver software for your device." message.

So I've been scratching my head over this one. I tried USB debugging mode, reinstalling the drivers, etc. Basically with USB debugging and the SDK drivers, I can finally get something installed, I see the Android Composite ADB Interface, but MTP is still eluding me. So PTP works fine now, but MTP is so damn annoying...
Once I disable USB debugging, I'm back to square one, its no longer MTP that has the ! sign in device manager, but instead, Nexus 7 again. Searching the SDK folder yields nothing and not even PTP works once USB debugging is gone.

I created the attached MTP driver inf to see if it would address your issue.
If it works let me know which OS version you are running. I think you mentioned windows 7 64-bit, but sometimes people switch machines in the efforts of trying to get things working.
You can install by telling the driver install not to search and to look for the driver in the path you downloaded and EXTRACTED this zip file.
The other way to install is to right click on the ? question mark entry in devmgmt.msc and go to the tab with the update driver option.

If you want, you can try the version in this thread:

This driver inf only affects MTP under USB debugging and will defer to windows for MTP when USB debugging is turned off.
You'll need to go to devmgmt.msc and Portable Devices, find Nexus 7, right-click, find the option to uninstall drivers, choose that, righ-click on Nexus 7, remove device, reboot.
Then specify the new path for the driver install (the one from that thread is mtp_driver, instead of mtp_driver_all in this thread)
Also you may want to post your experiences on that thread so people can find it in the future.

Do you still have the issue where it says device could not be started when you turn off usb debugging?

Not sure if I'm having the same problem or just similar.
With usb debugging mode enabled, the tablet appears as Nexus 7 with no drivers found.
Without usb debugging mode, the Nexus 7 doesn't appear at all, not even under "other devices" or as a .USB composite device.
First tried installing Google USB Driver Rev. 8 from the SDK manager, with no luck.
Trying to manually install the extracted WPDMTPNX.INF driver with "Include subfolders" checked gives "Windows was unable to install your Nexus 7" as a result.
ROM: ParanoidAndroid 3.93
Kernel version 3.4.0-g365a6e0

I believe your USB IDs are different from stock because of the ROM you are running.
I don't think it will fix your problem of not seeing the device properly with usb debugging disabled (I think that is possibly a rom issue), but it should theoretically get your device visible with usb debugging enabled.
Right-click on Nexus 7 in start menu->run->devmgmt.msc and choose the tab that allows you to update drivers and specify a folder where you unzip'd the zip file.

Can't get win xp to read my Nexus 7 after wugfresh root

Hi, I was so happy that after suffering from trying to root my Nexus 7 with wugfresh toolkit, finally got the job done (driver installation problem then mtp change to camera). Now after another several hours of trying, re-installing drivers and everything else I've read around nothing seem to make windows xp detect my nexus 7 as mtp for file transfer. I must add that before I started the whole rooting process, it was working fine, I mean the whole file transfer thing. Am I still missing something?
I just want to be clear though that I do not blame wugfresh toolkit and thankful in fact for that.

I have tried that on multiple cases. My PC would sound meaning there was something plugged in/out in the usb but still nothing appears in windows explorer..

I've got windows xp as well ... Does the sound have 2 dings or 3 when connected?
Also try rebooting both computer and tablet
Edit: go to developer options, under USB debugging there is ' revoke USB debugging authorisation' .. Click that while connected

Just the two beeps that means something was plugged in...Also tried the revoke option, still nothing. I see that my pc acknowledges the Nexus & but not as mtp because the option to safely remove my device is present but no drive letter was assigned to it and I couldn't see the device in windows explorer. What else could I try?:crying:

All I can think of now is to reinstall the drivers

Done that too. I'm thinking about re-using samsung drivers instead as it worked fine before I went through the rooting process. I'll try it out later today and post results.

Finally got it...I would like to give credits and thanks to the members in this link (threadstarter and all those who contributed in it):

So to sum it all up, I had to manually reinstall/update the driver -> selected "Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)" -> clicked "Don't search, I will choose the driver to install." ->then seleted "MTP Device"
Note: at first it had problems but as stated in the link, I downloaded Microsoft MTP Port Kit (mtppk12.exe), installed it and voila!
So happy right now...thanks for the help! :victory:

[Q] Windows not allowing me to install drivers

My device is currently allowing debug mode. It is not rooted nor unlocked.
I plugged in my device and windows gave this weird sound (sorta sounded like three low beats in quick succession). I went to my device manager and it shows a Nexus 4 with an exclamation icon.
I opened up the properties and it says
"The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)
There is no driver selected for the device information set or element.
To find a driver for this device, click Update Driver."
This is due to the fact that i uninstalled the drivers manually so i can try to reinstall them but when I chose to update the drivers and navigated to my /extras/google/usb_driver folder but immediately after i click the next button for it to install it brings up a window that says
"Windows could not find driver software for your device.
If you know the manufacturer of your device, you can visit its website and visit its support section for driver software."
this comes up immediately after clicking next, if i choose to search online for driver software this same window pops up after about a minute.
What is going on and why wont it allow me to install my drivers?

What drivers are you trying to install?
Universal Naked Driver is what I used.
Have you tried disabling USB debugging and plugging it in?
Have you switched it over to PTP?

Both the normal drivers and naked drivers have the same problem. I have tried disabling usb debugging, when i do that and plug it in the computer simply shows nothing in the device manager.
What is PTP?

i remember being able to get to that page before (back when drivers were correctly working) but i don't know how to get there now. So i have no idea if it is on mtp or ptp

Pull down from the top of your screen and select Connected as a media device to switch to PTP.
Have you installed any other USB devices lately?
Have you tried rolling back the drivers on your PC if they've been updated?
You could also follow a tool kit like Wugs for the driver installation. You don't have to root or unlock your bootloader with it.

When i plug my device in only one thing appears on the pull down menu. It says
"USB debugging connected
Touch to disable USB debuggin"
and if i touch it it brings up the developer options screen in the settings.
There is no thing that says "Connected as" or any other meaning of the words in my pull down menu.
Thanks for the link to the toolkit, if no one has any other suggestions i will attempt to use that (and hopefully that works).
EDIT: I tried using the toolkits usb driver installation guide and i get the same error..

I was having similar issues lately at some point between 4.2.2 and 4.3. I'm not sure why, but it stopped working. I ended up completely uninstalling my current driver, rebooting, and then installed the Google USB Driver via the Android SDK Manager:

This website uses the same toolkit that i used in my last post, unfortunately i get the same results.

I was having similar issues lately at some point between 4.2.2 and 4.3. I'm not sure why, but it stopped working. I ended up completely uninstalling my current driver, rebooting, and then installed the Google USB Driver via the Android SDK Manager:

All has been well ever since.

Can you tell me how to do a complete uninstall of the driver? I want to make sure it completely gone from my system before reinstalling.

Yeah it uses wugs toolkit. I had problems installing the drivers on my laptop but the instructions from the website helps. Its mainly the part of uninstalling. Instructions 14 and 15 are the most important ones. Previous drivers conflicting with it.

Plug your phone in USB to your computer and go to your Device Manager. Under "Android Device" you should see something along the lines of "Google Nexus 4 ADB Interface". Right click, go to uninstall and then check off "Delete the driver software for this device." After this I unplugged my phone and rebooted. You may or may not need to put your phone into fastboot and uninstall the "Google Nexus 4 BootLoader Interface" driver as well (to get them both) -- I really don't remember.
I used to use toolkits as well, but I've grown to be independent of them and like to get more involved than I once did.

The short version: You said you were given the option to "Update driver". Just click that and then, from the List, pick USB Composite driver.
