Samsung Galaxy Note DO NOT DO

Ok I have an infuse (using Inspire now until replacement comes in) and I have seen a galaxy note, read specs and seen... I don't know why so many are jumping ship... It is just a bigger screen really, already with GB... Not a true upgrade at all, just a way to get a few hundred dollars out of people.... That's why many devices wont get true updates because people will always act like the slightest change is the biggest upgrade when it isn't.... Im just saying people be smart and wait for a TRUE BLUE UPGRADE and not just an overblown phone

how is it not considered an upgrade? it has a dual core processor, and a gigabyte of memory... not to mention almost double the battery. plus all the features the S pen provides over normal touch screen. you may as well have just condemned all the current galaxy s2 devices because they arent TRUE BLUE upgrades.. wtf mate

The note is definitely an upgrade hardware wise. That being said it doesn't interest me at all because there is no way a 5.3" screen phone will fit comfortably in my pants pocket. The infuse is boarderline, most of the time it is fine but sometimes it is just annoying in my pocket.

A complete waste of an upgrade due to phones coming out with 2gb of ram and Quad Cores. Why jump the boat on Dual Core and 1gb of ram? A complete waste for those just wanting the phone for the big screen.

im waiting to see what coming form the Sgs 3 or htc leaked quad core phone before upgrading

Some of us want the bigger screen. I've gone from flip phones, to the iphone, to the Infuse all in search of the biggest screen...and the Note will be the king of the biggies for awhile. Sorry, but the Infuse is an antique in comparison. Not fitting in a pocket is the least of our concerns and no reason to create a thread to DO NOT DO. Find a better reason to bad mouth the new bad boy.

just out of curiosity, what manufacturer has announced that they will be releasing a phone with a quad core processor and 2 gigabytes of ram? I've seen a lot of user talk regarding devices with these specs, but no actual official info from manufacturers.
Just because something better will come out in the future doesn't make the current best obsolete.

I got mine and its a friggin beast compared to infuse... running ucla1 2.3.6 stock with dual core and spen ... no substitute... getting official ics March 1st... nuff said

That's what gets me too. Non-Samsung phones that were released before the Infuse have been confirmed as getting ICS with ETAs.
I like Samsung phones - especially their audio... but my next phone wont be one. Can't trust Samsung to keep their commitments in a timely manner.

The screen is too big. My phone is always in my pocket and that big of a phone would not be good for a person like me that does manual labor all day. Its personal preference.

I guess you don't read much do you? Samsung has already jumped the ship into making a Quad core 2gb ram phone......What is it? Samsung Galaxy S3, When can we expect it? Probably in another 3 to 4 months, those that can't wait and wanna jump the boat for a Note go right ahead, And if these specs do become official, then it's gonna make your Note look bad. They were saying the S3 would have a beast battery that would last longer than normal giving us more of a benefit for those who constantly use their phone but Hey That's you! Keep in mind better **** is coming....... Just relax!

I honestly don't see how it's not a real upgrade.
The Infuse has gotten me through without problems for most of my daily tasks. However, it does freeze up rather frequently, lags, and also has some issues now and then with stuttering and resetting itself (or just turning off).
I'm not saying the Note (or Galaxy SII) don't do those things, but I feel like they should do them less. Yeah, I know I can flash a custom ROM and all, but every time I did one, I'd always run into a bug or two that would make me go back to stock (despite the awesome benefits).
Just because people are "jumping ship" to the Note does not mean those people simply want the latest and greatest. Most, if not virtually all, people on here seem to understand that technology moves rapidly and their product is going to be outdated by the next best thing right around the corner. We all know the SIII will be making its debut soon, and we all know it will be better than the current lineup super-phones. That doesn't mean going from the Infuse to the Note will be any less beneficial, because the Note is still a better phone than the Infuse (unless you really hate the size... but then it's like, well you have the SII or the Skyrocket, so no real point there, in my opinion).

Hey man, no reason to be rude about it. I was asking for an official document that states quad core, 2 GB phones are "right around the corner" as you are implying.
I would be inclined to agree, when the next galaxy s device is released it should blow all current devices out of the water. It is after all the successor; it better rock. but again, the specs you quoted are still rumors and the device has no ETA. So you're basically telling people not to get the current Corvette just because the next one will be better.
For the record, I don't have a note. Not getting one either, but you're argument doesn't really hold water since its based solely on rumor and speculation or user expectation. Not official manufacturer released hardware specs.
No reason to try and make people feel stupid for buying one of the best devices available AT THIS TIME.

One thing though to be carful of is that they changed the specs some for the americcan one.

Honestly with the current cell phone technology , you'll be forever waiting because there will always be a newer and better phone that's 3-4 months away from being released.
I say, get what you like now. If it has the specs, look, feel, and size you like, get it. Then if 3-4 months later quad core phones come out, sell your current phone and get the new one. Simple as that!

I'm not a latest and greatest kind of guy I like my infuse and probably won't upgrade for a while. I trust dman when he says the note is a beast and i can appreciate playing with new toys, but I don't get what the big deal is with the S Pen.
My wife bought a case for her kindle fire that came with a pen and it works on my infuse, so... /shrug I'm just not too excited about a stylus i guess...

People drooling over quad core phones are just spec hungry. The only advantage may be battery life, but that's a big maybe. More cores draw more power, but do handle heavy multitasking and gaming with better battery life. Seeing as most Android apps don't even take advantage of two core, why the hell are four necessary. By the time apps that utilize four cores are widespread, there will be a whole new generation of devices that are better than the GS3.
Yes, 2 GB of RAM will make the phones buttery smooth and apps launch instantaneously, but here is already barely any lag on my infuse running CM7, and our phones are single cores with less than a gig of RAM.
Until a majority of apps utilize the advantages of quad core processors, buying a phone with four cores is basically like having a 10 inch ****. You may seem impressive to all other guys, but it's not exactly necessary for a majority of sexual encounters. Haha.
Not to mention, unless you plan on buying the international version of the GS3, we won't see it here in the US until the end of the year most likely. Happy waiting to you!

The S Pen is a wacom stylus...way better than the capacitive stylus that came with her fire. Much more accurate, and allows for a lot more functionality. With the button on the S Pen, you have additional features and gestures that make using a stylus actually productive. Capacitive stylii are basically little fingertips. Look at some of the art being produced on a Note, and you will never be able to match that kind of detail with your fingers or a capacitive stylus. This accuracy allows you to actually write legibly.

Unnecessary thread. You know everyone has there own opinions. So why argue. If people want the note, then leave them alone.

G2 Upgrade

So, I assume everyone browsing this forum has the G2. I really am still in love with this device. The main reason is the physical keyboard. I also know though that there are a lot of phones coming out that will probably blow the phone away.
So what are you guys doing with the releases of HTC One series? Also, what about phones from other carriers?
I thought it would be good to hear some opinions because I am carefully considering the HTC One S with TMobile.

The HTC One S looks like a nice device- the S4 seems to have mostly better specs than the quad core international version.
For me, however, it is missing a few things: microSD card and NFC. If it had more internal memory, then the microSD card would be a non-issue. If I am going get a new phone, then I would rather get a phone with newer features (NFC), rather than a slightly better phone than I have now. It would be like getting a phone that didn't have a front facing camera or bluetooth.
I like HTC phones, but I think the One S is a little too lean on features. I expect that there will be better phones later this year that have all the features I want.

Yeah, what do you think about the Nexus?

The Galaxy Nexus? That seems OK, but since the dual core S4 phones are announced, it seems a little dated. If I had to chose, I think I would wait for a better phone. If I was still running a donut rom on my G1, then the galaxy nexus or the One S would be an easy choice. But since I'm rocking my G2 with Audacity, I would rather wait for a phone that has all the features I'm looking for. Hopefully, T-mo will come out with a worthy phone in the G series.

Do you know what phones are supporting the Snapdragon S4? I thought that was a long time away? I haven't been in the mobile phone circle for some time now.

There are only a handful of phones and tablets that have been announced for the S4 - One s and XL, and EVO 4G LTE. At this point, my dream phone will be released late 2012. The S5 platform is a 28 nm process, so waiting for the S4 will have a lot of added value compared to the current state of the art 45 nm process.
For comparison, our beloved G2/DZ is a 45 nm SoC, while the Tegra 2 and 3 series are 40 nm processes. So 28 nm is the next milestone. Of course, process size is not the only measure of a phone, but I would use it as a benchmark to see how much of an upgrade you'll be getting.
I was pretty set on getting a One S, but the more I look into it, the more I want to wait for a bigger upgrade across the board. The one exception is size- the G2 is a great size and I don't won't to drift towards the phablet area. I want a cool phone, not a half-shrunken laptop.

Im wonder why the G2 is still the last worthy qwerty phone tmo has had. It sucks because when i needed a phone the G2x had just come out and i was upgrading from mytouch slide. I love my G2x but i miss having a keyboard. Now i am due for a full upgrade and still tmo has no worthy qwerty phones.

Yeah I am in love with the form factor of the G2. I also love the physical keyboard. I think a lot of users prefer that option, so I wish they would make more of these options available.
I do wish the G2 was a little bigger though. I don't think that phones like the Nexus or One X are too big, they are not the Galaxy Note after all.
I think I am going to hold off for the end of 2012 for multiple reasons. I will be more willing to upgrade then.
edit: I am actually waiting on TMobile to send me a replacement phone. Mine only boots in to the HTC screen and then never goes past. They offered me a Sidekick for free instead, but I don't know why that would be much better. I guess I research the ICS roms available and move that way until the end of the year. @gee_one the architecture doesn't really increase performance, at least not directly. It does lower operating temperature and power consumption, which may or may not allow for even more overclocking, and thus more performance.
@joe333x have you tried the htc doubleshot (branded as mytouch4g slide). It's a fast phone and perhaps a decent upgrade from the g2/dz. Although I think it'd be better to wait for a phone with the newer s4/tegra soc's.

So if I read tech specs correctly, you want see much difference from the cpu the HTC One S offers and the phones in the next year or so?

Correct me if I'm wrong but the One S is going to offer the Qualcomm S
4 Krait SoC, right? That's definitely going to last long enough till you upgrade.

The One XL (US AT&T version of the One X) has the S4, and that phone is speculated to be released in the next few weeks. Some folks on XDA are even hoping for an announcement this week, and a release date next week (4/22?). An early test device has already been benchmarked by an AT&T employee, and it smokes every other Android device around, including tablets:

I never thought I would say this, but I think I'll be able to live without the hardware keyboard. Yeah, I have full upgrade as of now, so I am trying to read up on the One S and the SGS3 for now. I think the lack of hardware keyboard will not be too much of a big deal, even though I will miss it. I do like that the SGS3 should be bigger, but overall I am interested in processing power and what will last the longest.
There is no information on who will receive the SGS3 is there? I have started to just live with the fact that there will be new, better technology in the mobile world every few months, so I may just be going with the One S. But Samsung will release more only a week or so after the One S release, so I may wait it out all the same.
Decisions, decisions.

At bare minimum, the krait will definitely last 2 years before it ends up in a DZ esque situation, performance wise, that is. Right now, it seems that it's the fastest chip around, and I really don't see a how android is going to need faster performing devices for the forseeable future.
The One S would personally last me 2 and a half, maybe 3 years. I'm guessing 2 years for the average joe. The krait is a very promising soc and will last for a while. Although, I'd still wait to see what else HTC is going to offer. Still hoping for a keyboard device, heh...

Yeah, I am awaiting a keyboard phone also, but with my current financial situation I might need to hold off until the end of the year to see what they release and what the SGS3 looks like.

I think the biggest draw for me will be stock ICS- when there is a new T-mo phone that has stock ICS, I'll be there. I can flex on the small things like sd card and physical keyboard, but Sense is a no-go.

Is it as "revolultionary" as it claims
Because the s2 changed the market

If not then its really not. What can a quad core do that a dual core phone can't? A dual core phone runs very smoothly so I don't see what good a quad core phone could be, besides bragging rights. The HD display is a good characteristic but not exactly worthy for me to upgrade.

I'd consider it worth the upgrade if you're available for one once it's released.
However I wouldn't pay full off contract price for the phone until it gets below the 600 mark.
Regarding your cons: I'm not sure how 1gb of ram is bad considering nearly every smartphone has that much and even our s2 doesn't lag. Just because the phone still has 8 megapixels doesn't mean it's better. Megapixels mean nothing unless you plan on upscaling pictures for printing.
You should take another look at the s3 because there are many new features added to the device software wise and it's a sleeker, sexier design.

You're forgetting Quad Core is only going to be in the International versions. U.S. versions are getting a Dual-Core Snapdragon S4 or some ****. The only real upgrade I see, for U.S. users like myself, is the 12mp camera (if that's even being implemented).

i usually don't buy phones until they're below $400! lol
because $400-600. That's a pretty good laptop, a very good desktop, a big LED backlit TV. Maybe some 3dtv's on sale... A small vacation. A complete tuneup of your car. you get the point.
But I agree, only worth when using an upgrade, not full retail price.

Where are u getting ur sources.... if Samsung had a big world premiere in London to have quad core, us versions will definitely have quad core just not exynos.. otherwise it would be the same as galaxy s2?...........
Also if you think 12 Mega pixel is an actual upgrade... you need to check your facts because it just means it takes bigger picture and has nothing to do with camera quality.

Maybe u need to do your research. Us carriers will be getting dual core s4 processor. The s4 is a far superior to the chipnwe currently have. Do some research and get all the facts.

The last phone I bought retail without research was my G2X. Feel I lucked out considering it has lots of activities in the Dev side.
But honestly now I'm like a bargain hunter and seriously, the new devices are disappointing in a manor of speaking. Plus the US versions will be gimped out lower tier from the international versions.
Just find a decent device for 200-300 off ebay or craigslist. Then just trade up/down if you have a chance. By now I really want a super phone with 12MP camera, 2.0 CPU quad core, maybe 2 gigs of RAM. Expandable SD Card, maybe a 4.5 screen.
If you look at the new devices, they are a slight update from the last model, and probably run the same. Unless you have money to blow on this hobby, and can afford, by all means. But unless there is a huge leap from previous and next models, its not worth the upgrade. At least not throwing all that extra money for just a minor change.

With all the new development going on for our T989's right now (just look what TDJ has put out the last few days) as well as others. Then once source is released sometime in July...I think this device will stand the test of time well into the future, especially through the length of my contract, which is over a year.
I wish I could drop the money every time a new device came out....I can't, but the DEV's around here give me a new device every time I flash! So I personally don't think it's worth it for me right now, the bump up in specs is just not that big of a draw for me.

This device can hold me over till the s4 or the next galaxy.

Well, I was not interested in any smartphone until SIII. I had an Atrix and for me all the new smartphones seemed to be not far different from mine. I live in Brazil, we don´t have lots of new models like in US. We don´t even use HTC here
So for me it was a huge difference upgrade my phone to SIII. The biggest difference I felt was the super AMOLED screen. The colors, the smootheness.. I really felt a great difference from my mums SII.
I do recommend!:laugh:

1. Quad core
2. SD card slot
3. Large and replaceable battery
3. Fantastic Camera
4. Tons of feature ( smart stay, pop up play, smart alert, etc)
5. Jelly bean updates on the horizon
6. Good community support
7. Its fast i mran its really fast!!
8. Choices of internal storage option (16,32,64 later this year)
I absolutely recommended this phone if u have spare money.. its worth thr upgrade..

Hi folks,
I was planing to buy the N4, but, seriously, after almost 6 months of the launch date, I don't know if it still is a great buy or if I should wait for the next wave of cellphones coming this spring (and if there are good phones upcoming).
Any clues on a better cellphone than N4 ? (I was also thinking about the Optimus, the one with the best hardware specs, but I have the same doubt, is it worth right now?)

I honestly did not need this thing but I am glad that I got it (coming from G2X running CM7).

The Google I/O Come In May so wait two monthes for the X Phone or next nexus ...

From the phone that I have, I shouldn't even think and buy it right away (I'm using an old HTC Diamond touch, was using a BB but a thief robbed me 2 months ago...), but I'm not really sure if I buy it today, tomorrow I won't be sad due to a launch of a new version or really better phone, I mean, it's been around 6 months since the current generation of smartphones started (quad-cores @1.5Ghz [S4] 2GB ram), I wonder if the next gen (either 8-core or @2.5 or S5 or more ram, or even better video processors) will be launched really soon or will take at last more 6 months or so..
Anyone that has more information and is more into it, know something or have any hint on what to do ?

@Omer, that is my biggest concern, I wonder if they will really launch the next X Phone there (since they said that it isn't time yet for a new Nexus) and since I saw some news saying that the X-Phone won't be topmost hardware but will be the better price/hardware equivalency, I wonder if it will be really better than the upcoming Samsung S4 or perpahps the next gen upcoming HTC phone.

From the phone that I have, I shouldn't even think and buy it right away (I'm using an old HTC Diamond touch, was using a BB but a thief robbed me 2 months ago...), but I'm not really sure if I buy it today, tomorrow I won't be sad due to a launch of a new version or really better phone, I mean, it's been around 6 months since the current generation of smartphones started (quad-cores @1.5Ghz [S4] 2GB ram), I wonder if the next gen (either 8-core or @2.5 or S5 or more ram, or even better video processors) will be launched really soon or will take at last more 6 months or so..
Anyone that has more information and is more into it, know something or have any hint on what to do ?

And what do you want to do with an 8 core processor and more than 2 gigs of RAM? Dude, seriously. I can't even imagine how to use the Nexus while 2 gigs of RAM or all four cores at max frequency except for weird games with, for a phone, great graphics but generally bad controls.
That said I think the manufacturers should start focussing on other things than processors and RAM. Today's generation of phones got enough resources. It seems that in the future we will see big improvements in the phones displays. See 1080p and flexible displays. Especially flexible displays could really change the way we use smart phones but I doubt we will see that in 2013.
Just wait what manufacturers show on MWC. Then think about if you really need the ridiciulous specs shown there and furthermore think about the fact that the N4 will be supported by Google for at least two years.

First of all, it's been exactly 4 months since the release, not 6.
If you keep the mentality of "waiting for the next best thing" you'll never buy anything because there's always a next best thing around the corner. Whatever phone you decide to buy, it's not gonna be the greatest thing for more than a few months and you'll just have to live with that.
There's already the wave of 5", 1080p, 13MP phones coming out, but the reason why the N4 is still attractive is all those new phones will still cost 600+ off contract.
No one's stopping you from waiting another 6 months, but that's 6 months you could've been enjoying a good phone. I had one before and that HTC Diamond is some hot garbage.

Yep I was thinking about this 2 things too, what will be the upgrade in Phone X / next Nexus ?
Google usually do have major differences between the releases, so I'm really curious about the next phone, I'm wondering if the features that this new one gonna have will be amazing (it doens't really need to be better proc. or ram, as you said, we currently don't even use it all), but will be the next "awesome feature", and I'm worried to buy now beucase there seems to be so little time left for the next wave that really holds me back of buying it today.
Btw, @100eyes that is another concern, the price, from the leaks, and news and blabla, it seems that Phone X will be coming with a lower price basis.
The mistery on it is holding me more than anything, if I already knew some of the new features, probably I would buy today the N4 as it seem to be more than good enough for me (I have a N7 and I love the proc and all the things, and it is slower than the N4 LG)
Btw, about the release date, the wide release was 4 months agora (end of october) but the first release to a restricted public and testing public was 6 months ago, I'm talking about knowing what you gonna get and not what I'll really have my hands on in 1 or 2 months, I was planning on a max 4 months from now timegap.

Get the Nexus 4, you won't regret!

I say pull the trigger. coming from a G2x as well I couldnt be happier with rooted stock. All of the threads you see around here with people complaining are either
a) legitimate issues that can only be resolved by RMA. Its very possible to receive a faulty unit.
b) complete and utter retardation.
The threads complaining about "washed" out colors and other things such as that are completely bias and you really shouldnt let that effect your decision. Hope that helps!

Should I sell my N4 for the Galaxy S4?

Been playing with my Nexus 4 since a few weeks now but the Galaxy S4 is looking very tempting, especially the display. Should I sell my N4 now and save the moolah to purchase the Galaxy S4?
I don't think I would be getting a better value later on. How many of you are planning to sell off the N4 for the samsung galaxy S4?

Won't sell my Nexus 4 until I get my Nexus 5
I had an S3, and I've not totally given up on Samsung after all the fuss over sources for developers etc, not what I like to see. Very happy still with my Nexus 4, nothing to make me consider an 'upgrade' (and I normally always demand the latest and greatest).

As for your first question, it's really entirely down to opinion. If you don't want any of the newer hardware on the GS4 (i.e. 1080p screen, octa-core processor, 13MP camera etc.) then don't bother. I personally don't see it as worth it at all. I would never be able to tell the difference between 1080p and 720p screens, I can't conceive of any task in the foreseeable future which the S4 Pro won't be able to handle, I don't use my camera too much and I don't need the expandable storage. Your opinion may well differ, and at the end of the day you definitely won't be able to get a definitive answer to this as it's all down to opinion.
As for the second question, there's already a thread in the Q&A about this (in which the vast majority of people answered no).

The only way id sell my n4 is to maybe get a n5. The s4 didnt really impress me an all of its new features seem gimmicky

That's like saying should I trade my playboy playmate girlfriend for some fat ugly chic? If that's what you're into then go for it.

Just remember your N4 will get the next version of Android and the features that will bring, your S4? Well you may have to wait a while to get version 5 of Android! Sure the S4 may have better specs but software is just as important as hardware!

1. Battery has been great for me, better than sensation and mt4g.
2. Can be done with apps, I tuned mine based off of an oled, love the screen now
3. It does, users are using lte now

personally i think that the SGS4 is a great phone BUT I don't see any reason for us (the moderate users) to take a leap for it and thats why:
the nexus 4 is amazingly fast, battery is just fine and if u need more than that get a portable charger, PURE android and fast updates so u don't get tied to the manufacturer's good will, I don't like the Super AMOLED display to my eyes the colors are too saturated but that doesnt mean they are not good.
i've bought the nexus after having 4 HTC devices and i must say pure android device is an another league, the custom UI is just slowing it down.
and so about the Exynos 5 Octa
this is NOT a real Octa core. this processor packs tow quad cores
4-cortex A7 @1.6ghz for power 'saving'
4-cortex A15 @ 1.2ghz for performance.
i dont believe in this concept but maybe it's just me.....
so i dont see reason to buy the sgs4 while u can enjoy the nexus 4.
just my opinion.....

- Go ahead and try different kernels, as an example, the recomended values that comes with franco will blow your mind away.
- Well you have a point there, me personally don't need that LTE speed.
4,5 - Well, I don't really understand why people needs more than 16gb in a phone, is your phone a cinema theater or something that has tons of movies to store or what?

First nexus phone for me after an S2 and an S3. I'm never moving to any other device unless it's the next nexus. Nuff said.

This morning, a comment from a CM collaborator on XDA was taken to be as an ‘absolute’ in regards to support of the S4. He offered the opinion of four TeamHacksung maintainers, their frustrations and lack of interest in supporting the S4. What’s seemingly lost on those reading this is that his comments as an individual do not speak for CyanogenMod as an organization.
As for the team’s stance on the S4, there isn’t one at this time, and most definitely won’t be one before the device is sold at retail.

I should add that whether you sell your Nexus 4 to buy an S4 is completely up to you. That is an extremely personal decision, and only the OP can decide that. Anything else is just everyone else's personal opinion, and is usually going to go between people who actually use and love the Nexus 4 (or Nexus in general), and those who don't but post here anyway. Being as this is the Nexus 4 board, I would think the question is most likely going to be slanted in one direction.
