[Q]minimum brightness? - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've been using Clemsyn's OC Kernel, partly for the fact that it allows a minimum brightness of 5%, but as he has not yet updated the source to 4.1.2 I was wondering if any other kernels have this tweak, or if there is a setting that can be adjusted with a startup script?
My current setup:
CM10 Nightlies + Motley+ Alpha kernel (3.1.10).

I don't know how to change it in the system, but this app works in a pinch.

Thanks for the reply!
I already use Lux Auto Brightness, which uses the same principle for its sub-zero mode, but find that this means that you lose contrast. Ah well, guess I'll just have to wait for Clemsyn.......

Many thanks, but I'd already seen that:cyclops:
Maybe I'm being greedy, but I want the OC as well, currently running at 1.5GHz + Jay's Secret Sauce script

SetCPU no longer underclocking at low usage?

I have moved from CM7 to Hombase 5.4, and found that setcpu no longer seems to do anything. on CM7 it worked as i had hoped, underclocking the phone when i was doing low intensity stuff like texting, and pushing it up to full power for videos etc. now it does nothing but tell me core temps, which are always high as its always running at 1Ghz.
Can anyone explain how to get it back to underclocking?
Many Thanks
Try a different kernel.

This is a known issue with the OC faux kernel. I was running into the same problem with his enhanced stock kernel after using webtop. After reflashing the enhanced stock 0.2.0 it would still get stuck at max 1Ghz after using webtop, but a reboot would get the underclocking working again.
I only tried the webtop hack to see if I could get it working. I haven't gone back into it at all so I don't know if this is something that will reoccur. Although I will say that with my day to day use I have not run into any clocking issues since.
Thanks, is there a page somewhere which details which kernels do what and which would work with my rom?

This is the page for faux's kernels. As far as details, start reading and searching through that thread as well as the threads for any ROMS you are using. 99% of the time people will either have the same problem (and possible fix), the other 1% of the time they will identify a bug (i.e. maxed out CPU).
Keep in mind faux does have different kernels for Froyo, GB, and CM7.
For some reason even if I move the slider from 1300my to 1000, when I touch the screen with at least 3 fingers for a few seconds it pegs out at 1300. I read our cpu's are daisy chained so to speak
so the 2nd core kicks in when needed. I tried cpu tuner and it gives the option to powersave and only use one core or if you choose performance it will allow Both cores. Just might be setcpu isn't designed fully for our dual core setup.
thanks for the link to kernels, but i cant find one for HomBase, or a Kernel only download on the homebase thread. i have the Version2, which has some blur, but only the 1.0Ghz clock kernel. where could i get the 1.3GHz download by itself, to see if that might help, as its the one CM7 had iirc
Thanks

Get the 1.3 from the faux thread that I linked to. They're in the very first post...
CM7 is the only ROM that has its own custom faux kernel. For all other ROMS just match the kernel to the build the ROM is based off of (Froyo or GB). If you're using V.2 of Homebase then use the GB one.
Update: Also, there are other kernels out there. I was only using faux's as an example since you were using CM7 and Homebase.
thanks, ive now got the 1.3Ghz kernel installed successfuly, but it still seems like setcpu will not underclock. i dont know if its normal, but the "Scaling" option is greyed out, and i cant get access to the Advanced tab. is there something im doing wrong in setcpu itself?
thanks again

Lack of underclocking is a known issue with the latest OC kernel. I'm unclear whether it's actually a bug with the kernel or with setCPU not supporting dual core devices. But yeah, there's a problem with it right now. I'm on the stock enhanced, and other than the webtop issue I mentioned above, it works fine.
Scaling/advanced are not available, this is something that is determined by the kernel you are using not the app.
ok so if i understand you right i would be best off using the stock enhanced kernel (for now), as it will underclock fine?

It's working perfectly for me, except after webtop use (which I don't normally use).
I'm still having the same issues regardless of weather I choose power save or performance it will not underclock, and those are the only governors I get the option of :s

Glados vs Matr1x

Hey!
I've tested both kernels already.. i want to know if there is anything that one perform better the other or something like that..
What do you think:
IMO Glados is more stable than matrix ATM also i think matrix is built off glados it has all its features but tweaked by matchkid
matrix reboots regardless of OC and glados im able to OC up 1.4 without increasing voltage without reboots. Once Pete tweaks his kernel with OC and voodoo colors ill be jumping ship. i used his his GB with absolutely no issues
Edit
Too be fair I haven't tested new matrix
I see.. and what abt CFS vc BFS?
And btw on every rom i've tested, when im at lockscreen and press the power button to turn screen off, there is some green flash on any kernel but stock.. anyone has the same? no big deal but just wondering..

This problem is related to Voodoo Colors. Stock kernel does not have it.
so with a stock kernel, there isn't the "green flash" problem, right?
currently I use the Matr1x v13 kernel. If I install GLaDOS, I'll have the same problem?

I'm not sure that it's the kernel 100%. On GB when I ran CM7 with a voodoo kernel I had the green/yellow flicker (if the brightness wasn't at 100%). But when I switched to the GWK74 stock rooted OTA with a Voodoo kernel, that flicker was completely gone at any brightness.

i9020A here... with no brightness and with brightness the screen is the same on matr1x and glados

I prefer GLaDOS to Matr1x but Matr1x is not built off GLaDOS. The other kernel devs have accepted Ezekeel's MODs. That's GPL, open source.
I'm running GLADOS @ the moment. Everything looks good, but I do get the green flicker but I'm sure this is normal on every Kernel w/ Voodoo.
However, when I correct my colors through Voodoo, it's not saving upon reboot. It goes back to the default 2.3.3 crap colors. Any words of advice or anyone sharing similar experiences?

From what I've seen CFS is more stable than BFS.
Most devs request you swap back to CFS if BFS is FC-ing a lot.
Pretty sure it's only more stable because it's more common.
From what I've read CFS has more gradual performance increases while BFS relies on more peaks of performance.
What BFS is:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brain_Fuck_Scheduler
Update
Glados 2.3... quicker than previous builds even though no mention of performance increase
this kernel is noticeably quicker than his other kernel and IMO quicker thann other kernels and smooooth also got rid of the occasional slight lag when accessing launcher
BTW im using cfs

kernel question

i have a nexus 4 running liquid smooth 2.2 and franco kernel milestone 2
here's the question, in liquid smooth controls there is performance control which is like the app for franco's kernel but with less functions
i was just wondering will the franco kernel frequencies be followed if i have different frequencies in the performance control?
IM SORRY IM A NOOB

I would only use the Franco Kernel Updater app for the franco kernel or you might get conflicts and issues between the two control apps. In the FKU you control frequencies, color and gamma, UV and more.

For android 4.4 but it should work with 4.3 (untested)
Loving the latest Kernel mate, nice work.
I can quite agree with Nvidia making modding this tablet hardwork with their sources being like they are.
Whats even better with this Kernel is we can now have Custom bootanimations without it hitting the dam /lbh partition for it. So now i have a Android L Bootanimation lol

how to increase battery life by 25%

It is simple, tested on my nexus 6, just go to system/bin and delete mpdecision, then install an app that controls kernel, like kernel adiutor, raise min freq of cpu to 883000 mhz, then set apply on boot, reboot phone and enjoy lagfree and smooth super battery life

Disabling in a kernel app will accomplish the same thing. The reason you are seeing a change in battery life is because of the 3 second input boost of MPD. Most of the custom kernels have a generic touch boost driver that is set to 1 second or less to take the place of the mpd boost and increase battery because of the decreased boost time.
MPD works great for some people and not for others. It is greatly dependent on your usage habits. For my typical usage, with mpd on, I average 6-7 hours of screen on time. If you are a gamer, where you are constantly touching the screen, mpd will adversely affect your battery life because of the constant boost.
As a kernel developer, I definitely would not recommend deleting the mpd binary. I would suggest trying a couple of different kernels and/or configurations to accomplish the same results.
lol.. seriously? i guess thats one reason that ive disabled mpdecision for the last 3+ years on whichever nexus i was on, but not the main reason
How can I turn mpd off on ex kernel manager
you don't need a kernel app to disable it BTW. all kernel apps do is provide a ui for you to use. it can be done via a terminal emulator app.. type,
su(press enter)
stop mpdecision(press enter)
and that's it.
I'm using kernel auditor and in the CPU hotplug section the first listing is mp decision. Is that what needs to be disabled?
OK, silly question.. do you know what mpdecision does? do you know what disabling mpdecision does?

@simms22 good point here. This is good for everyone to know. If you disable mpd without a replacement, you risk all cores not coming back online after deep sleep. Mpd doesn't actually control hotplugging, it controls input boost and onlining of cores.

and that's exactly why I disable mpdecision, so I can have all 4 cores active at all times.

A replacement such as Zen, Mako, Blu_Plug, etc.
Also, (just an FIY) Zen isn't really a hotplug (it keeps all four cores active at all times, unlike Mako, Blu_Plug, etc). It's still lumped in there for some reason.
I highly recommend disabling MPDecision. You know what MPDecision stands for, right? MakePoor Decisions

Some kernels come with it already removed. Check the features section of the original post in the Elemental X thread or try searching the thread.
I can say from experience that Kernel Auditor doesn't give you access to all of the adjustments in Elemental X. Some features are only accessible through the official Elemental X app, so it might be there, but you can't use Kernel Auditor to adjust it.
