Seeing how our phones aren't going to be updated, I'll be getting something different soon. But that got me to wondering what to do with my phone.
No, thanks. I don't want to sell it, and the idea of this thread isn't about that sort of option. Thanks for looking
I want to know if anyone has any ideas for re-purposing the phone so it is still useful. As well as any apps/accessories that it will require.
Any thoughts are welcome. From the serious to the hilarious. Just no motofail junk please. There are better threads for that.
I can think of, entertainment center, SIP phone, micro-tablet, pimped out neck chain.

Other than the last one, I don't think that I am realizing the full potential of the device.
And I'm hoping that, even though I opened with the whole Mr.T thing, there will be some serious suggestions.
If not, at least be entertaining please.
I am certain that there are some great ideas, I hope that you guys will share them. Thanks.
Pimped out neck chain. Let's get fancy. :good:
But the main idea I got would be to make it a server : Media server, web server or game server if you're able to compile an open-source game server for ARM and run it on Android.
After I upgrade (likely to the SGS3), I plan to use my Atrix as an entertainment device... MP3 player, video, that sort of thing. Not exactly sexy, but it beats my Creative ZEN player into the dust. (I'll also be keeping it as a backup phone.)

I turned my atrix into a emulator system and crammed as many emulators and games as I possibly could. With the sixaxis app for ps3 controller use and the HDMI mirror I have a ball when I have free time.

I'll always keep my Atrix as a backup phone. It just takes a lot of stress off when I'm modding my phones to have a backup.
If you screw something up, you have the luxury of waiting an extra day or too if you need it...

Got a question regarding this topic since I plan on getting a different phone at the end of the year after the wave of new phones come out.
Since the Atrix is not 4G/LTE, I assume a new sim card be provided with a new phone that is...am I right to assume this? The reason I ask, is that my plan is to keep the Atrix and use it as a media player and also as a GPS device on the golf course. Can someone tell me if GPS will still be active if I keep the sim card in there. I plan on staying on my ATT account so I would think my plan should work. But I know these carriers can kill a good plan very quickly.
Atrix has an amazing battery life, about 7 hours web surfing versus 4:30 on my Galaxy Note. I'm with you on not being eager to sell it. For the second hand price I will not get anything even close to the specs of Atrix.
I'm also one those people I have to have a contingency plan for vital things. Two phones, two laptops, and two wives (just kidding) in case one was broken or moved back with her parents.
I've been using my Atrix as a phone mainly and GNote for everything else. I will be watching this thread to see if I can put Atrix in more use. Three spare batteries and two desktop chargers await eagerly to be used.

The sim card shouldn't have any effect on the gps. What will matter is pre-cached maps or an alternate data free maps app like CoPilot on the phone. So, basically, other than maps needing data, your gps will work fine.
I will begin to use my Atrix as a smart phone.

I also like stock blur way more than touchwiz and sense.
this phone was unique and powerful, it should get the upgrade so it can teach the "superphones" how it's done.

But the gs3 blows the atrix away. Minus the fp which 1 out of 300 people used. Motoblur sucks, AOSP is the way to go. Even sense 4 destroys Blur. It's horrible.

I never understood this love of the FP scanner. It is cool and I liked using it, but you can get around it using a pin code so it's only as secure as that.

How's that work? The android window in webtop plays Netflix video badly, and the Netflix app doesn't work on ics/jb where mirroring is smooth.

Thanks for the ideas so far guys, keep them coming.
I'd really be interested in knowing if someone has set up their phone as a dedicated home entertainment center.
I don't think that the dock UI is that great for using it that way.
With the remote it isn't that bad, and I guess that there's an app that would let me control the Atrix from an Android tablet too.
So it might be the best way.
Any alternative entertainment center type apps out there?
What I think would be great is a rom specifically built for this sort of thing. Does anybody know of such a rom that could be used as reference
for porting?
Also...
While I appreciate all of the frustration recently (Me too.), please folks, help keep this thread on topic. I posted links to threads which are
much better places for that in the op so those of us who's mellows have been totally harshed could easily move on over there to 'discuss'
the unfairness of the situation. ( I know I made them tiny... But they are there!)
Again, please, and thank you.
I have a few ideas... most likely, when I eventually replace it, it'll go to a family member as their first smartphone. Hopefully by then the 4.X roms are more solid... otherwise, it'll either become an in-car GPS with offline navigation software or I'll figure out how to get a Debian chroot to play nice (trying to DIY it and the image wont mount properly) and keep it as a backup/secondary computer with a bluetooth keyboard and mouse. In both of the later cases, it'll still be around as a backup should something happen to its replacement.

that screen is gigantic..I can't get around it..3.5 is too small..4 is just right.
Also stock debloated blur is really nice...did you know the blur launcher is one of the smallest launchers in file size? it is even smaller and faster than zeamlauncher [which I put on non moto phones]
I love my atrix and will continue to use it as is until I get my upgrade next easter. I will then be getting another 4" phone ( best size there is!) And turning my atrix into a media / mapping system for the car.
Currently I use the car dock, but I have plans to permanently mount it in ym glove box and hdmi it to a 12" touch screen for gps purposes and media. Then usb out to my amp for some kicking tunes! That way I can actually removee the stereo completely from the car and just use the atrix.

Hi all,
there are many great old school emulators on Android and i would like to test them out. But playing on the Nexus with soft joypad is horrible, especially for action games.
Is there any gamepad availabe for the nexus which can be docked to the device? There was something like this for the Milestone and other slider devices, but i can't believe that no manufacturer created something which can be used for devices without slider.
I also know that you can hook up your wiimote with the nexus via bluetooth, but thats complete nonsense for me: where should i put my nexus one when holding the wiimote?! On a table? Thats not a real solution.
So can anybody tell me if something like this is available by now? I don't want to buy the PSP Phone for this....
I may be producing one for keyboardless phones.
Its not a gamepad as such, but its a little bit of a work around.
I just need to make sure there's enough interest from people out there.

everything would be fine for me, as long as you will be able to hold the nexus one (the wiimote solution makes no sense) when you play. And there should be separate hardware buttons, because thats the whole point.
The idea is more of an external keyboard with a game buttons overlay.
The keyboard will be attatched to a protective case which you'll be able to put your phone in and take it out whenever you like.
So yes, you won't need to sit the phone on a table or use the on screen buttons. And the keyboard is the size of the phone, but putting the phone in the case will double the phones thickness. Is that much of an issue for you?
I'm testing out some variables now and hopefully should have a finished product in the coming weeks.
You can use a wiimote over bluetooth, I'm sure there are other bluetooth gamepads... Google is your friend.

Pairing would be via Bluetooth if you're wondering.
Look into the BGP 100 gamepad. You can pair it to your N1 using a piece of software called MMG gamepro.

Not available yet, still under development.
how does the wiimote solution make no sense? If you've got a classic controller and a wiimote, you've got yourself a wireless controller to your SNES/NES/Genesis. The wiimote soultion is the best, and only solution at this point.

um...the nexus one is supposed to be a "handheld" device. There is no sense at all to use a wiimote, and then have to put the nexus one on a table or something to play. It does'nt get more uncomfortable than that.
Can you imagine using this approach on the go?

That doesn't look bad. But it seems like this pad is hard to find...and pretty old. i don't know if it will work with the nexus one.
I really like the concept though. Only thing i don't like is the fact that you can't play in landscape mode, as the controller only holds the devices in potrait mode...
~$25
http://www.dealextreme.com/p/msi-bgp100-bluetooth-gamepad-1-aaa-battery-included-13760
Landscape would be an issue, but I think you'd find that on any gamepad/holder you come across. Perhaps you can take the thing apart and make your own casing. I'm thinking a combination of a 2x4 and a coat hanger + some foam pads + duct tape.
Yeehaw.
I wonder if any 3rd party Wii controllers have an "All-In-One" solution. Having a Wiimote hanging off of your Wrist via wriststrap while grasping the classic controller is hell. You would think that some smart 3rd party designer would simply mix the wiimote inside a classic controller and be done with it.
[Update 1]
Looks like this is an AIO solution: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hd-bw5UxxsA
Googled: Wireless Classic Controller
Some use a little nub to communicate to the WiiMote but this looks to communicate with the Wii Directly.
[Update 2]
Yea I think I am right. This Controller has bluetooth built in so it eliminates the use of a Wiimote in the middle. It works by using android software from the market, perhaps the same one we're used to with the Wiimotes

I thought it was quite ingenious and worked pretty well.
I've also got a mini USB bluetooth keyboard that is roughly the same size of the N1 that I can use. I got it from some site in China, (EDIT: here) but it's one of these things:

Thats actually pretty cool. I guess it would work well for some games. I kinda like the idea of having a DPAD though. I could see the keyboard getting use out of things like a USB or a Bluetooth media streamer like a Boxee (if it has bluetooth, I dunno).
I think when I grab some dough I'll pick up one of the $40 gamepads. I don't mind having to put the screen on a table or something. I love to play old school games and I travel alot. So as long as I can play and play with ease.

There isn't really an elegant solution with any existing Bluetooth gamepads simply because Bluetooth doesn't require a physical connection between devices, and manufacturers are of the opinion that there isn't much demand for gamepad docks for Android and iPhone. Not only that, but most games also assume you'll be using touch controls, so you're limited mostly to emulators and smaller third party developers for support for extended input methods from Bluetooth gamepads.
For now if you need a way to combine the phone and gamepad so that they operate as a single handheld unit, you can feel free to modify them, such as can be seen in this video. Kinda sucks to ruin a Wii remote like that, but there are probably other ways to do it with some velcro and Sugru that won't destroy a perfectly good controller.
So i'm actually thinking about going back to an iphone 4 because of the simplicity it provides and because of ios5 releasing. First of all, your asking for advice to stay with the Vibrant because ios5 is better? on a Android Forum?
Imma let you in on something, ios5 IS Android. They have copied the best features of what makes Android so like-able and combined them into ios5.
And second of all, you cant expect much if your on stock roms, that's the whole idea of having an Android, the openness of it and the do whatever hardware lets you to do idea.
So there are my 2cents
How about not being tied to iTunes, how about free cloud storage, how about 80% of app's on market free, how about free wifi tethering, how about not being on Att or Verizon, how about free turn by turn navigation, how about not bring just

The iPhone is for those who just want a polished looking OS that's easy to use. What you see is what you get. It doesn't offer the flexibility that android offers. I assume that since you are on this forum, that you enjoy tinkering with your phone? If you go to an iPhone you're going to be locked down. Apple wants so much control over their stuff, it makes the hassle of tweaking them not really worth it. While I think most would agree, android is no where near as polished as iOS, but makes up for it in the fact that most android phones are far more capable then the iPhone will ever be. This is due to the control issues Apple has over its products. That's my opinion, take it for what it's worth.
what made me fall in love with iphones, was bitesms, and just the smoothness of the phone. android gets complicated, but its easy to find solutions, which starts to get annoying.... I've used miui and simply honey, and simply stock, Hopefully 4.0 is good

well, android can do things ios will never be able to do, among many other reasons. you don't like something about android? change it. i've been very happy with my vibrant on cm7 oc'd to 1.3 or 1.4 depending on the kernel i'm running at the time (currently glitch, previously stock and bali). enough so that i'll be waiting for the nexus prime (or longer).

dude android users outweigh iphone users so I think we're more the conformists rather than the other way around. i love my vibrant and what I can do with it but not every one loves to tinker with their phones like we do. none of us would be caught dead using stock software out the box, unfortunately 95% of vibrant users are probably in that position. so compare that to iphone. android is open source so the quality is not consistent on all phones. thats the pro and the con of the system. i'm not going back to ios but please dont be as dogmatic as ios users who seem to think everything apple ****s out is pure gold.

Honestly, you just seem like an average phone user. IF YOU DIDN'T LISTEN AND ARE NOW "LOW BATTERY" AND CANNOT FLASH:
First thing's first. It will probably still charge on the wall charger or a car charger. Try that first. But, if it won't...
(or if you're just an avid flasher,) I'd also recommend you get one of these to help you out of jams: Motorola Factory Cable. The one at that link from Team Black Hat is typically out of stock, but a search of the words "Motorola Factory Fastboot Cable" on eBay can get you one for between $5-8. This cable does not charge your unit and does not come with the MotoACTV.
Any questions? Please post below. And GET YOUR ACTV ON!

Update: just checked, they're going for $50-200 on ebay, lots are on there for sale.
Also, I will be updating the first post of this thread with any info/links that you guys need. We would love for more development of this device, since we've been doing it for months/years now.
Wow this seems great! Youtube and a browser. I recently bought myself the Sony Smart Watch, and I was not too impressed with the battery life time, how is this ones?
I also managed to ruin my SmartWatch, but I'm gonna get it refunded from the store I'll probably get this from eBay! Is there any bugs/problems I should know about from the Motorola watch?
I get mine tomorrow, and my only concern/question is how well this handles Bluetooth tethering. I use FoxFi and PDAnet with phone and tablet and i'm hoping I can use the same with the motoactv.

Not really. Battery life for me is around a week, sometimes more if I turn it off at night. I don't leave bluetooth or wifi on unless I need them though, and keep the brightness around half. I also turned off the shake-to-wake feature, as my watch was turning on when I was just walking around and using up battery life with the screen on lol.
But, for such a tiny battery, a week is pretty good in my opinion. Either way, you can just charge it every night if you're a heavy user. Keep in mind, this isn't like those other "smart watches" that only issue notifications, this is a full blown android device.

I know Nook Tether works on it for bluetooth tethering (internet pass through) I believe, but I'm not sure about the others. I've heard of PDAnet also, it might have been another that worked. I don't tether mine though, so I'm not sure.
The only thing I want different is the watch strap, and an XDA user is actually working on a better one right now. I can't wait!

I'm leading an auction on eBay at the moment. The "Buy Now" alternatives is too expensive with shipping to Norway :/
A week battery time sounds good to me I had to charge my SmartWatch every day, and that wasn't a problem.
How's the Firefox browser and YouTube app working on the watch?

Youtube works great, not sure about Firefox though. I think some people used Boat browser or something and had fine results with it.
Is there a way to keep the display on to use as a watch, without pushing a button? How much space does the OS use? Is Ebay prefer over Amazon for purchase?

It has shake to wake, where you shake your wrist and the display turns on. The os doesn't use much, maybe 200mb or something. I've got the 8 gig version and have plenty of space, even with roms. However, the space for installing apps is limited for the time being. I'm not sure, but there might be a way to partition the space on the device to get more app space.
Sent using XDA-funded carrier pigeons
I was unaware of the shake to awaken. I will go for the 8 Gb unit when I get the funds. More reading needs to be done to see which ROM may be the best for me. How hard is it for someone to generate a customized ROM without extensive training?

The hardest part is the script lol. Making one work is not easy. I've been working on roms for years now and this is the most finicky device I've ever seen.

I will have to pass on this activity fir now. Does any ROM support an audible alarm and customized time date screen?
It doesn't have a built in speaker. I'm sure you can get the alarm to show on the screen though?

That could be a problem I was thinking of using the alarm in the morning and when needed. Off to see one at VZW today.
The store did not have any, demo or for sale.

Cool! Let us know what you think! Of course, the one you see won't be rooted or have a regular android launcher on it yet.
I have decided to buy one, preferably at less than ~$250. I would prefer new versus used since they are discontinued and i am uncertain about warrantee. Maybe i can afford to order one next week. No doubt I will have questions, if rooting does not go smoothly.

I bought the N9, and loved that phone, but drawbacks for me where that the lag started to kick in after a while, general UI lag, and lack of certain applications. other than that it was perfect. I love the swiping thing, hence why I really like pie controls. LTE is nice and all, but I need decent battery life without switching batteries, real multitasking, and something that I enjoy using.
also the other half stuff, fingers crossed for keyboard accessory I loved the N900

Yeah.
They need to make it interesting, so that many people would use the features. And when there is big userbase, other manufacturers start making their own innovations based on "The other half"(I mean other halves with different functionalities).

it's good to see that xda is giving positive response to the jolla phone. hopefuly, "the other half" will not be a gimmick as the half of the phone depends on this.
think of it in this way: apple products has stuff like docks from connectors etc. this concept is similar to those docks. but portable.

So it runs android apps...so is this Android with a launcher thats all over the OS or like BlackBerry where you need a certain runtime and .apks that have to be converted a certain format? Looks interesting, though, and if its the former I wonder how an aftermarket launcher would work :good:

It is more like BlackBerry. SailfishOS is an os based on Meego. Which is based on Linux, just like Android. On top of SailfishOS there is a layer to run Android apps. I hope you can understand my explanation

But the Android apps can't use the Sailfish stuff. So I think that native apps are really important. Lets hope that developers see this as an important platform to develop for.
How long will it take to get your hands on this phone?
I think the Jolla phone is somewhat interesting, but I'm not sure I'll ever get to try it out. There will be VERY few of them (like there were very few of the N9, which I still own today). I hope somehow the good ideas can be brought to a wider audience, especially the pully menu idea, which would be great for larger phones and allows a stable grip on the lower half of the device But really all the swipe driven UI features.are pretty slick.
Hopefully, I'll get my hands on one somehow.

Nice, not amazing
The phone itself is nice, not amazing in any way. It looks very plastic-like, and makes me worry about scratches, especially on the glass-front.
The "Other half" is amazing, can be brilliant if executed well - it depends very heavily on manufacturer support.
And yes I have preordered, and will hang on to my N900 until then.
So, browsing today, i found this: You know the phoneblox concept that everyone been talking about how it will never happen? well Motorola just announced an "open modular" Phone design scheme thing. Motorola say "WE WANT TO DO FOR HARDWARE WHAT THE ANDROID PLATFORM HAS DONE FOR SOFTWARE." (sorry about caps) Heres a link, if you want to read more: http://www.theverge.com/2013/10/29/5041336/motorola-project-ara-modular-smartphones
And also, from the blog:http://motorola-blog.blogspot.jp/2013/10/goodbye-sticky-hello-ara.html
Its called "Project Ara".

Although I appreciate tech news as much as the next guy, I don't see how you can throw in XP2 into the title. This article is merely a pseudo update of a story from earlier in the year in regards to how PC's you can build and change out parts and as such, now Motorola, is looking into the concept of a smartphone that you can build and change its components. But I dont' the concept includes a gamepad and touchpad. Even if it did Devs would still have to support it, no support then its useless.
Again, not trying to sound like an a$$ and belittle your discovery, I am actually quite glad to see a compny actually looking into it as its a nice concept. But I fail to see how or why this could be the Xperia PLAY 2.
I think people need to realize, its been 2.5 years since this phone was released, I view our phone as along the lines as the HTC EVO 3D. A one time 'test project" to see if it would be successful enough. Clearly just as HTC is not interested in making an EVO 3D 2, Sony is not interested in making a XP2.

Well... I just thought of it as an opportunity, not to step on anyone's toes. The reason I decided to include xp2, was due to Motorola stating:"The modules "can be anything," says Motorola, giving examples ranging from a new keyboard or battery to more unusual components such as a pulse oximeter.". Im sorry Ill remove it if it makes you happy, but i just thought...

Would you consider buying one? I hear some people think it might not work due to parts being to expensive, and people "not having enough time" to customise their phones. I would definitely buy it

The thing about me is that I'm a very cautious buyer. When I buy something I make sure it does what I what the way I expect it too. So like when the PS4 & Xbox One was announced I didn't preorder it because I want to make sure there is no bugs or hardware issues. This will be the same.
Overall though yes I would consider buying one. If both phone blok and Project Ara come out I would see myself going for phone blok just because when you look at Project Ara the receivers on the back seem a little restrictive, when on phone bloks you can get difrent size parts and place them anywhere (if I want a camera on the bottom back of my phone I can do that)
PS: Have you checked out my post about the IReadyGO Much I5? If you haven't go check it out its also a Xperia Play alternative. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2404623

Nice to hear that
It's a great innovation
Modular connection style, no need for modular pieces
Idea: Instead of putting modular pieces onto a fixed exoskeleton(which we still have to buy from motorola), they should develop modular connectivity, something like the connectors of a USB port, but each square "piece" having two in and two out ports on the sides, that way every module can connect to every module without the need for a base station.
Something along the lines of a jigsaw puzzle, without the need for a board.
Of course I'll admit, this will be much harder on the software side of things.
I hope a lot companies will participate like carl zeiss, nikon, canon, samsung for LENS, Wolfson, Yamaha, Roland for AUDIO, for SOCs/Mainboard Intel, TI, (Nvidia and AMD i guess?) Sony, Samsung, LG for DISPLAY, Sandisk, Kingston, Samsung, and Sony for STORAGE. I may not express stuff realistically (i am a noob). Just my idea. Like we chose our own hardware/setup and there are a lots of choices and everything.:good:

In a few years that should not only be an utopic dream; I want it to be reality! Every personal computer is a modular system consisting of different and separate components like ram, cpu, gpu and much more.
So why no modular phone?
The main difficulty is the small form factor and the fact that smartphones are products with a really short lifetime. Moreover it's easier to get a whole new smartphone than buying some components to builing his personal one.
On the other side there is a wide range of new possibilities with such a project and there are a lot of people that want to use some "special" phones. Me too!
So I hope and I think, in a few years there will come first modular phones to the consumer. But maybe they will be very expensive and with less possibilities than there theoretically could be realized. Let's hope the best!
I would definatley buy one because look so funky and awesome. and you can start off small and slowly upgrade without having to get an entirely new phone
Set Standards.
I still believe once the ground rules are down and maybe 4 or 5 boards are made available (price ranging from standard to dev standards) this will work.
Each chip must use X connector, allow a max of Y volts, amps etc.
And have on demand firmware/driver loading. Hopefully with the last option, you can hotswap certain parts without switching the device off.

Nawbit wouldn't really make it harder for software, serial controllers deal with addressing chained devices all the time, look at SCSI and midi.
