OK, so this past week I received my new nexus 7 8gb. SSN c60. I've had no problems with it til a few days ago when my speakers starting distorting. I'm sure we all heard of this common problem. Mine happened after pressing the wake button. I heard low pop noises in the speaker area then that's when I realized the speaker issue.
I contacted Google via email and they replied with an RMA email. It was pretty good customer service. Wait til was not even a hour. Anyways, I bought my replacement n7 and last night my speakers decided to work fine again. No distortion.
Was this a software, app issue or was it a device defect?
I checked and they have already sent me the new device.
My question is, should I just send in my Nexus 7 or just send them back the new one? What should I do?

New Device - sound worked, pulled down the notification bar to upgrade to 4.1.1 JR003D (I don't know the sub kernels...) Upgraded - NO SOUND.
So, my one hour old Nexus 7 is messed. Likely software but it seems they like shipping new devices. Google is sending me a new one. Waiting another couple days Not willing to refund shipping and got attitude from the customer service rep. Not good Google.
fix for sound problem

I had the same problem, though mine had worked for weeks before the upgrade. I restored sound by going to a game application which has its own sound controls---after changing he sound there (unmuting) then sound worked globally once again.
I've had the nightly AOKP ROM on my N4 for a week now (since I got it last Thursday) but it's been overheating and randomly rebooting for a while.
On top of that I've got a few scratches on it. Will they care if I try to get it replaced via RMA?
Also how long does it typically take to receive the email to order the RMA device? How long to receive it?
Obviously I'll return the software to stock before sending it back.
Thanks for any guidance.

please read google support information!
call and process the RMA because its overheating and rebooting randomly, this will start the RMA if you have had your phone for less than 15 days they will probably do an 'advance replacment' they will hold the cost of a replacement on your credit card and send a link to rebuy a new one.
you then arrange for your current one to be be picked up and returned to google when they recieve one back they reverse the charge.
just re-flash the stock roms and relock the bootloader before sending it back.
HOWEVER your using a custom rom since you got it return it to stock and see if its still overheating / rebooting it could just be AKOP if you can determine that is the hardware at fault then return it.
and next time use google to find your answers there are lots of RMA threads and official links already it didnt need a Q&A
http://support.google.com/googleplay/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=2411741#AU
Sorry, I just learned all that after I posted the thread.
I guess my main questions are about AOKP and the scratches - will Google overlook this? Obviously they shouldn't know about the AOKP because I will restore it to stock.. but the scratches? It's nothing major.. but the back scratches easily.
Thanks
I doubt they'll care about signs of use like scratches on the back of your device.

From Google, when I asked them about scratches on my unit that will be replaced: "...Normal wear and tear is to be expected."

So it's been rebooting and overheating BEFORE you loaded AOKP while on stock, too?
They shouldn't care if it's scratched or not as long as you restore it back to full stock..
It's the ROM causing the issue. I'd be willing to bet money on it.
As mentioned above, verify it's a not a ROM problem first. If it is then you're just wasting everyone's time/money by RMA'ing it.
does anyone know how RMA are handled as far as shipping time, are they put in the back of the line or do they ship pretty fast.
They would ship in a timely manner. You cannot expect an RMA to take 8-10 weeks to ship.
Google likely has a large number of units sitting in their warehouse for RMA purposes only.

has anyone actually confirmed that, has anyone done a RMA since the ordering came back up and actually received a replacement.
I've confirmed with a Google rep that RMA's are handled immediately as long as within the 15 days of receiving the original phone. This is a like-for-like swap situation.
EDIT: I've confirmed because I might need to RMA my phone myself due to extremely odd battery behaviours.
Yeah it's not a ROM issue. I restored it to stock last night and the problem is actually worse now than before. Usually it would only shut off/reboot a couple times a day but it's done it at least 10 times just TODAY since I've been awake (like 8 hours).
Thanks for the normal wear and tear answer. That's exactly what I was hoping to hear.
placed a replacement on Dec 2. Nothing yet except confirmation email.

Yes. Here is my timeline...
11/13 - Ordered N4
11/28 - Received N4 in the mail
11/29 - Ordered an RMA unit due to earpiece buzzing and a weird bulge in the side of the phone
11/30 - received tracking number for RMA unit
12/6 - received RMA unit in the mail
Some additional info...
1) The tracking number just had a yellow box that said " a printing label has been created..." from 11/30 - 12/5. On 12/6 the tracking number was finally updated and said "Out for delivery". It was delivered at 10AM on 12/6.
2) The RMA unit they send you is actually just a brand new, fully packaged N4 with all accessories. Which explains why they ask that you send the defective unit back with the original documentation and accessories.

-Shipping confirmation (with tracking) - 12/8 around 3 AM
-Delivery is supposed to happen on Monday - 12/10
All times CST (UTC -6)
What would happen if you didn't ship the broken phone back to Google after receiving the replacement? Charged the full amount of a N4?

The answer I received from the Play Store rep was YES. There is a hold for the full amount of the phone on your CC and if the RMA isn't received within 10 days you will be charged.
For those of you who's have a replacement RMA, are you in the U.S ? Did you have to send your unit back before they send out the new device ?
Hi, I got my phone from o2 and the first phone I got had the buzzing earpiece problem.
I took it to the shop and they replaced it with a new one right there.
Couple weeks later I started noticing the annoying buzzing again, so I took it back and said they can't replace it but have to send it in for repair.
The verdict came back that there was no fault, when there clearly is cause making phone calls is nearly unbearable in quiet environments.
Now I want to know if I can go straight to LG to get an RMA even though I bought it from o2? What's the best way to get my phone fixed!!!
Many thanks :good:
(Can someone edit the title of my post so it has [UK] in the title?)
Anyone got any idea?
If o2 won't replace your phone then you will need to contact lg and send your phone in for repair. I would like to say that I have gone through three nexus 4's and each one had the ear piece buzzing all replaced for other reasons (yellow hue), so it is likely that your next device will be the same or worse.

So even if I bought it from o2 I can still go to LG? Will that service cost me? It's within warranty still.
Has anyone bought a Nexus 10 from a place other than the Play store and had to RMA their device? I am curious as how Samsung's service is in terms of getting a replacement unit out to you. Getting a replacement unit from Google is pretty simple but is it as easy to get one from Samsung? Do they attempt to fix the device (for example, if you had light bleeding) or do they send you out a new unit?
Bad service.

I bought mine from walmart and thought my battery was bad. I called samsung and it was painful to say the least. They transferred me 5 times. Once they sent me to google cause they said they didn't handle nexus products. Google sent me back to them I picked the wifi only option and they told me again it was a google product I told him I just got transferred back by google. He sent me to the manager who again tried to tell me they didn't deal with nexus products. So I told them my problem and told them I felt the battery was bad. He finally just said okay I'll put in a ticket for you to send it to Texas (I believe he said, wasn't really listening as I felt I should have just got a new one). He said the process would take somewhere from 2-3 weeks. I said forget I'll just deal with the bad battery until I can buy one and replace it myself.
The shipping process with Samsung is much the same except that it takes multiple transfers on the phone to find someone that has a screen that can do an RMA ticket on the device. My problem is that in doing the work they don't really make sure they solved the problem you had. I had my screen replaced and they put a worse screen in with four corners of large light bleed and they even managed to scratch up the back of my device. I was upset to say the least and had to ship it back for them to fix their shoddy workmanship. On top of that... I sent mine back on the 16th and it didn't get opened until 2 days after arrival. As of a week ago it has been sitting on hold waiting for parts. So its been in Samsung's hands now for 2 weeks and no word on when they will get whatever parts they need in stock or ship it back. When you ship they pre pay a 2 day air ups label and send it back 2 day air as well. Hope to get it back reasonably soon as the device has been out of use now for over a month. First trip took about two weeks total. Second trip who knows.
BTW, I did buy mine from play but was tired of worse RMA replacements. Everything was perfect on mine other than a little dimming along the camera edge of the screen and a dead pixel.
Sent from my often RMA'd Nexus 4, So that I can use the one I'm using now when I get the 6th and hopefully final one.
Hi I am using a Nexus 4 and when I plug in my headphones, I can only hear the sound sometimes. Sometimes it comes out the speaker for like a second and other times, there is no sound from the speakers or the headphones. If I move the headphone plug the music stops as if the device detected the headphones coming off. I have tried with 2 pairs of earphones and 2 pairs of headphones. Has anyone else had this problem? What can I do about it.
Thanks for your help.

Same here. Worse and worse since a month.
I've read a lot of things about that... some have put some air from a can because of some lint and they managed to have headphones working again. You could try that.
I was about to phone to google in about a week to see if the nexus 4 can be replaced for that reason (it's not software related, i have tried differents roms and different music apps) (and i've tried a lot of different headphones... anyway, "before" it worked so i don't know, the nexus 4 fails to detect the headphone properly)
Right now you could use an app called SoundAbout and force the sound to use the headphone... but it doesn't work that well, if i move my nexus 4 the music player stops playing, so it isn't that useful.
Does the actual connector socket wobble a little? Mine does and it gives me audio issues. I think I'm going to have to RMA my 211k
Yes i think i can say that it moves a little bit. I remind of someone who said he had opened the nexus 4 to fix the headphone jack but i am unable to find where i read that neither if it was really a nexus 4, anyway at the the time and now i don t want to open it... please tell us if google accept to rma for that if you tell them before me, i wont be in canada before next week
Now I have no sound from my headphones and the phone won't detect them either. I'm gonna send it in to Google. It doesn't look like it will fix itself over time. Its getting worse and worse.

Even if you force the output to headphone using the app SoundAbout?
Anyway even with SoundAbout it is annoying i will call google too, tell us what google tell you when you call i am afraid they say we have destroyed the headphone jack...
I will call Google in about a week (once school is finished in Canada). They should replace it if you still have warranty. Did you root your phone?
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
So I called google (me and my poor english when i speak).
I went back to stock before calling and relocked the bootloader ( http://hippowise.com/revert-stock/ )
But the google representative only asked me to do a factory reset in order to see if this would solve the problem. I haven't said that i just got back to stock and no it doesn't work. I would'nt have told that i had rooted it and had a custom rom. Anyway even with stock rom it doesn't work.
So my case will be reviewed by another person but he told me that there will be a replacement, i will receive an email with the process (i guess the usual process... pre-authorize a payment, they send me a new one, then i ship them the one that isn't working properly).
So that's it... no miracle... it will have to be replaced
I have received mine. Sadly, as we are canadian, it is the canadian one (booklet in french), probably same batch than the one that wasn't working. Hope it will be ok

Hm, I've also gotten numerous 301k devices (RMAs) but they don't have any of the headphone issues. Probably just a one-off thing for you guys.
more the same
My phone thinks that headphones are always plugged in. I tried blowing out the headphone jack, checking jack for lint (none), and have had no success. I cant RMA it because I was impatient and bought it from an ebay scalper as soon as it was released. So... I ordered a new headphone jack from Hong Kong. It should be here in about a week now. (Wish me luck!)
I imagine that mine is broken from wear and tear. I use headsets a lot at the gym, and other places. Probably 40 plug and unplugs a week for the life of the phone... The soundabout app works for the most part, but I still have issues with music starting to play or pause when headphones are not even plugged in. Most annoying being when it decides to pause on bluetooth in the car... I really hope the replacement jack solves my issues.
I use my nexus4 essentially as a mp3 player so i think i might have given a hard time to the headphone jack... i am now really taking care of it. I understand your frustration, i have thought about bluetooth but there is really something wrong if the player pauses... with bluetooth enabled... in the end, even soundabout wasnt working properly. Luckily google rma is great otherwise it would have been my last lg phone... i cant understand that we are able to abuse a headphone jack and there was no lint in the headphone jack.
My case has a little sealable flap over the headphone jack and charging jack that keeps lint out.
Yeah, I think mine doesn't work because of wear and tear too. Its been unplugged violently a couple of times when it fell out of my pocket. I gonna call Google this week. I have tried factory resetting but it still doesn't work. Do they send you a replacement before you send your phone in?

I phoned them.
I explained them what happened (i unrooted it and locked bootloader just in case they would check i have a custom rom)
He asked me to perform a factory reset.
He told he will send my case to someone who will send me an email with instructions
A few hours later i received an email with a special link to buy the n4 again but it won t be really charged if you send your n4 in the next three weeks.
Then you receive an email telling they will send you another n4
In this email you can print a ups stamp that you will put on the package so it is free shipping to send back the other (lg repair center in toronto)
Then i received the new n4 then i put the old one in the package and used the ups Web site to schedule a free picking at home.
Honestly google gave a great customer support .
Thanks bro. I will call them

For your new device, did you have to pay for shipping given two shipping options? (3-5 days and 1-2days) why are we supposed to pay for shipping if its a "replacement"..
I dont know if i use the exact english word but it isnt like you really pay you only pre authorize google to take the money... because they send you a new one before receiving yours... so if you dont send them your old one they will take the money, they dont want to be screwed
For the shipping i dont know because for canada you cant choose an option, if i were you i would chose the expensive one as in the end you wont pay...
