Start Menu Windows 8 (HUH?) - Windows 8 General

I have seen this before (in an early build if i recall it correctly), but not with the final version number on it, fake? I kinda like this startmenu...

Fake (Windows 7 theme)
Hi all
I think that this is fake or most likely a Windows 7 Skin to make it look more like Windows 8.
Isn't the antivirus software in Windows 8 called Microsoft Defender?
Thanks and God bless
andrew-in-woking

that is definitely not real, as it lists build 9200, which is the current version that has no resemblance of a start menu. it is either a mod/hack or themed windows 7 with a wallpaper with text on it.

Might be a skinned/theme version of this app
http://www.stardock.com/products/start8/

The skin looks cool though!!!

this is how the RTM of Windows 8 desktop looks.

Yeah,
That is Start8 from StarDock - had it installed before they started charging for the BETA but it was as buggy as hell. If you want a start menu in Windows 8, try Classic Shell - free and fully customizable:

i recently took the plunge and bought start 8 beta. i was using it b4 they starting charging and it was really buggy, but the paid beta is WAY more stable. i havent found a bug yet and it runs smooth. would really recommend it if you cant live without the start button and want the performence of windows 8

It really looks cool, i think thats how i would like the 2013 start menu to look like I have Classic shell installed now, works great, looks the same as in Windows 7, since it doesn't show the Metro screen (with i cant use anyway as i use the Admin account) it's like Windows7, but fast!
This is my new win8 desktop
I tried the Start8, but there is no option to theme it Perhaps in the final version.. So better to stuck with the free Classic Shell.

That's not real but if I recall correctly some of the earlier builds (developer preview) did have a start button in the corner although it just opened up the start screen.
Sent from my HTC Desire HD using xda app-developers app

u can use this app with this skin. the only trick is it does not add itself to autostart by default, this can be done from tray icon menu.

Start8 works fine for me on an RTM version (non cracked. This is an official one that has a valid license for two years)

Alternative for HTC Homescreen + Cube

Hey everybody,
I have a little question for you. I hope this is the right forum for my question
I’m searching for an alternative for my HTC Home screen and Cube. I have personalized the Home screen so far. But now I’m searching for a good alternative.
So I want you to give me an advice for a good application. What I want to use is the plug-in for the Home zone from o2 and Battery status. I want to look for the expend minutes, SMS, and the traffic.
Thank you for your help.

******Danger Zone****** Search PointUI before instaling if you are new.
UltimateLaunch, make your today screen a cube.
Use Spb Mobile Shell
http://www.spbsoftwarehouse.com/products/mobileshell/?de
And thus, the three battlefronts were broght up, all in a row.
Use PointUI if customization doesn't really matter to you, and good looks with sparse information is tolerable
Use UL if you like to customize the heck out of your device, and spending time doing that is ok
As for mobile shell, I've heard great things, but can't say I've used it before. Anyone want to chime in?
UL and Pointui is free but SPB Mobile Shell is not... I like SPB Mobile Shell better...
throttlelauncher
After I've started to use ThrottleLauncher in my roms I have removed the htc Home, cube, action screen and the quick list.... and soon I will not be needing the comm manager because I can do everything from throttle. So I have removed more then 10 MB from my roms and replaced it with less then 1MB with my setup of Throttle .
The next version of Throttle will be so amazing that when you tried it you can't live without it again.
just a little screen form my setup

+1 for Spb Mobile Shell
As I'm not impartial I'll not post my opinion but just in case you're interested, here you have a video preview of Throttle's next release (currently available for beta testers):

Gullum, Ather, thanks for the nice words .
You all forgot about FreeStyl!!!!!!
I think i will try ThrottleLauncher this app. looks great
@gullum
Where can I get the theme you use? Maybe you can share your doing with me
here are some of mine and others setups for trottle launcher. the all work on the last release 0.8

The one in the screen is a preview of the one I will use with my next roms and are compadable only with next version of Throttle

Out of curiosity then, what are the differences then between 6.1 and 6.5... these screen shots are not as I expected! or is this just using parts of 6.5 to create a stable rom?
Running on my Polaris
i'll update on how this is running later
can you tell us about the performance ?
performance is bad... very slow, and doesn't respond to screen taps very good...
I have got the impression that the only thing 6.5 in this rom is the text 6.5 in the about screen...
giz a chance to use it lol
Because i usually only use 'naked' rom's this feels a bit lumpy (slow). M2d scrolls ok (found this an issue on previous 6.1 Roms). Nice touch with the battery/vol etc icons across the top bar, like having wisbar, but without having it...
Camera doesn't work, doesn't show a display.
Did you notice something different scroll in contacts and in the program folder ??(not manila program folder)
i've seen an old hp with win mobile 6.1 and the scroll was perfect. I think that this fact is related to the video driver....Im very happy of my shekhar rom but the scroll is ridicolous
Contact scroll - good, as good as i've seen it on any ROM
Program scoll - Jumpy not smooth at all, takes a second to refresh the icons
I've removed M2D from the today section and install winterface (my preferred UI) and that seems smooth and as fast as its been on the naked rom's - so thats promising..

Funny i was thinking the same
Sktools is showing this as OS 5.2.21140.3
i hope that htc will relase also a new set of driver...
the 6.5 relase is still under heavy (??) development.. so we must wait before to comment
It can use 1.59.44.02
to see if its really WM6.5 just deactivate touchflo (with advancedconfig, or something similar) and go to the programs folder and scrool with finger...
it should bounce once it reaches begging/end of icons list...
i didn't release mine cause there is really nothing new...and its full of bugs...
it scrolls better...better then 6.1 but still icon refresh issues...hope its gone on final...
Camera not work
Very slow
Camera working well here or it's just the same with 6.1
BUT check internet explorer...Surprise!!

SPB mobile shell 3.5 graphic problem

Tried installing SPB mobile shell just to see how it performs.
Thought I'd throw this out there, see if anyone has seen this.
I'm obviously using a custom rom (who isn't).
The bottom curtain of the WM screen will not disappear, even
though I have the WM today screen disabled, the option to
have SPB to take over the start menu etc.

Well I'M not using a cooked ROM!
I'm using Shell 3.5.3 now. You need to go into the Today settings and disable Sense (WM 6.5) or TP 3D (WM 6.1). Try that and see if it works.
I am running the regular T-Mobile 6.5 ROM and SPB mobile shell works perfectly.
Found it........one of the guys on the thread of the rom I'm using said it was a shortcut to a file that Manila needs. Deleted the shortcut, installed it again, and it works. I don't plan on using mobile shell, but was wanting to play with it a while. I pretty much use titanium anyway.
Thanks
i use mobile shell and i like it better than TF3D ... ....i haven't had any problem with this software yet ....
I highly recommend SPB MS. you should check out mobile Sense and Mskip's add ons for it.
I couldn't have a WM phone without it.
Agreed! Upgraded to 6.5 Tmobile ROM yesterday and the very first thing I put on was SPB MS. The 3.5 version is somewhat nicer than the previous one but as all said, I too couldn't have a WM phone without it.
i agree im using ms 3.5 & will never go back to tf3d

[Q] Run Modern/Metro UI apps on the desktop?

Hello fellow Windows 8 users!
Not sure if this should be in development, but i was wondering if it was possible to run the Metro/ Modern UI apps on the dektop screen in a window? It seems the new office does this and I really liked it. I find it extremely annoying using a fullscreen app on a 24" screen on my desktop PC.
The new Windows literally kills windows. I don't get why they would do this to desktop users.
Office 2013 is desktop apps, not modern apps.
I understand that, I'm just using it as a reference for what I'm looking for. Its a desktop app but its in the style of a metro app that runs in a window and I want to know if there's a way to run real metro apps in a window.
I'm with you on this one. It would be nice especially with a dual-monitor setup. Anyone know if this is possible?

It would require hacking up a large portion of the OS. I don't think it will ever happen, if only because the metro apps can almost all be downloaded as regular desktop apps/browser windows. Netflix, Skype, etc...why go to all the trouble porting them when they already exist independent of the new UI.
This doesn't exactly answer your question, but have you played with Snap mode?
You are limited to a narrow, 400px width snap area (left or right side of the screen) and can only have one app/application running in the Snap area, but it is the only out-of-the-box way I'm aware of that can (somewhat) do what you're looking to achieve.
Just seen this app on Neowin. http://www.neowin.net/news/windows-8-based-retroui-gets-update-to-retroui-pro
I has a feature that puts a metro app in a window. it's working but it's still really unpolished.
Here is a pic of me playing wordament on the desktop. The app has some rough edges, hopefully it can be improved. The main problems are that it makes Windows really sluggish, and it's really unstable. It doesn't give taskbar items for the metro app and the second the metro app losses focus the window disappears.

Great find!!!!!!!!!! will go back to windows 8 now....first 2 trials lasted 2 hours only, couldn't get over the fact that all those metro apps run full screen, as multitasking was down to 0
Thank you
You also don't have to use Metro at all... the only things I use it for are Mail (crappy, but it works most of the time) and Skype (which is actually fantastic when snapped to one side of the desktop)

Thanks, mate !
that is pretty damn cool.....
excellent found
Awesome
THANKS!
Best tool ever!
Also, another one is QTTabBar, for me even better solution tha Clover because of more customization options and possibility to skin its interface.
Here is my example:
Why is such a great tool not implementd in windows by default?
I dont like the look of QTab so much, but again, useful tool.
You used to be able to browser files on your hard disk from internet explorer including tabbed browsing, but alas IE10 on windows 8 if you type C:\ into the URI bar just opens a new explorer window. It was also a rather poor file manager at that.
Chrome still does it but is even worse at it

Wow didnt know that
Konqueror (part of KDE, typically used on Linux or Unix but there's a Windows port too) is a combo file manager / web browser with tabs and such. http://windows.kde.org.
I have considered trying to port it to RT, but there's so many other demands on my dev time right now...
Its a really handy and good app.....now I know the use of reading forums
