First off I apologize if this thread may turn out to be inappropriate for this section of the forum.
I know this isn't really Nexus One specific, but it is Android Development related.
I'm having a somewhat slow day today and was doing some reading about the N900 when I happed across an interesting blog about a dev who managed to get his N900 to dual boot Maemo and Android.
http://blog.broberts.com/nokia-n900-with-maemo-and-android-yes-please
Apparently, it appears to be at the stage where it's just a proof of concept, but I have to admit that this is awesome to say the least. Anyway, I just thought I'd mention it here, where cyanogen, modaco and the rest of xda's talented dev's might happen to read it, in hopes that it might spark additional developer interest.
why nexus one and others phone need multiboot?
like as winmo+android android+maemo
next thread say maemo ported to android

I'm not sure if you misread my post. But this isn't about getting the Nexus one to dual Maemo and android, but to get android running on the N900. Not that Maemo isn't a great OS, I mean the N900 is a basically a fully operational computer/tablet, but the choice of apps on it is still limited. Regardless, the fact that it has flash and the fact that you can run practically anything from the browser does make up for it to some degree. Still, the N900 isn't really a consumer friendly device that others assumed it was going therefore getting android ported to the N900 hardware would be really sweet.
I don't think full on Maemo is open sourced but the parts that are I believe are released under a project called Mer. Since we've figured out how to boot debian. I don't think it would be much of a stretch to boot Mer.
Is it Maemo or MeeGo? Or are they both completely different projects?
So dual-boot is possible? I must of missed this stuff.. Would be cool to boot to a different OS
Does any one disagree with maemo being a more power os? I don't know why alot of people are not all over this.
I don't know muc about maemo, would definately like to dual boot with Debian or Ubuntu, though what those guys are doing in that debian thread is far beyond my capabilities.

Hello everyone!
I'm new here, but have been lurking and scouring the forums for a while now. I'm not a dev or anything, so I'm a total noob when it comes to cooking up roms and such... although I've done pleanty of flashing on different devices. I'm treating myself to a new phone as a late birthday present, and the HD2 looks like the best offering at the moment (or anytime soon) from T-Mobile. I just don't want to be stuck with such awesome hardware, running an OS that will be mostly obselete in a few months.
I've read that MS will continue to support WM 6.5, but we all know their deal... it'll be an afterthought once WP7 is released. I would be fine with upgrading to WP7, but unfortunately the HD2 has two too many buttons to meet the HW requirements (according to MS at this point.)
The main thing that makes me believe porting Android would be more plausible, is the upcoming release of the EVO. The hardware is so similar, it's hard for me to believe that it's not possible. Once the EVO is released, could someone use the Android 2.1 image from it, and modify it to run on the HD2? Again, I'm not a programmer, so I'm probably completely wrong... but would love to be proven otherwise.
I'm just looking for some of you with more knowledge and experience to give me some technical insight before dropping $450 on a new phone that will be out-of-date and no longer supported (for the most part) in 6 months. I would also like to keep this thread on topic, so please don't bother slagging the HD2 and suggesting other devices.
Thanks!
and another thread pops up =(
search the forum there are literally tons of threads about this
TONS especially on android
for wp7 there is no news since march 28th announcement so that means nothing more to report than the initial issues had
this is also in the windows phone 7 forum
if you want the phone, get the phone. Winows mobile is a good and highly customizable operating systme on its own and I like it.
you won't regret getting this phone, I sold my nexus one for it, and I don't even miss N1 (simply because it is not the best android phone anymore, HD 2 the best winmo up to date).
I am also a noob, but I encourage myself very often. Now android can run on iphone, what else would stop those geniuses from creating such miracles on HD2. All I have to do is enjoying the phone from the minute I have it, and stick to the forum.
I wouldn't buy the HD2 purely on the speculation of an Android port. There's no certainty that it will ever happen, and if it does, who knows how long it will take.
There are ports for older HTC models and the iPhone, but you have to keep in mind that those handsets have been out for a while, and have had many months, if not years, of development behind them. The HD2 and the snapdragon processor are relatively new, and development is starting from the ground up. It may take up to a year or more before a functional android port is available, and by then, there will more than likely be better hand-sets out there.

Thanks for the reply!
I've actually searched many times, and read tons of threads on this topic. The problem is, most of them are cluttered with TONS of vague info and flaming, with a tidbit of useful info here and there. I was hoping to open some discussion and spark some ideas or interest, maybe try and centralize the info.
Sorry for stepping on any toes, but this is the "T-Mobile USA HD2" general discussion forum, so I figured this would be the best place to start. I just searched the development forum and found a similar thread. I just didn't check there, as I was intending to discuss the possibility and such, not actual developing. Mods, if I'm out of line here, please move or lock this thread appropriately.
Thanks!
Edit- to the other posters, thanks for sharing experiences with me! I wasn't planning on buying the HD2 soley in hopes of porting Android, I guess I'm just looking for reassurance from folks that I'm not getting myself into a device that isn't worth the effort. I love modding my phones, but would rather not be stuck beating a dead horse in a few months. The feedback is greatly appreciated, and makes me feel much better about my decision.

this is true. android on the iphone only works on the iphone 2g as far as i can tell, and that phone is over 4 years old i believe. building linux kernels for a specific phone takes time, and most likely it'll take years to perfect. the ports out now for older winmo phones are useable but obviously not perfect.
i bought my hd2 mainly because it looks like pure sex to me. hehe. windows mobile didnt bother me at all since ive been using windows mobile phones since 2007. dont get me wrong, android is pretty good too. used that for about a year. each os has its own pros and cons i guess.

you wont regret getting this phone. in my opinion htc did a good job with sense, making windows mobile user friendly and whatnot, but if you dont like sense, it can be easily disabled. also the stock rom to me works fine right now but there are a lot of other roms made for the hd2 already so its pretty customizable as is already.

Cool, thanks for the info!
I usually try to keep from modding straight away, but after checking some roms in the development forum, I'm sure I'll start flashing sooner than later, hehe. The main thing I'm liking about the HD2 is it comes stock with the apps I'm most likely to use. I had a 2g iPhone a while back, but found I didn't use most of the apps I installed, and gave it up for a 3g device. Most of what I'm looking for is games/entertainment and themes, and I believe I've found what I'm looking for. If I'm not happy, I may try to cook up something of my own... there's certainly pleanty of resources here to get me started!
Again, I apologize for the redundant thread, but I appreciate all the feedback. This is exactly what I was looking for!

They have been working on porting linux and android to the HD2 for months now. It's not an easy process, as I have stated in the many threads that get started about this. The EVO rom cannot just be ported over. The N1 is just as close hardware wise... they actually used the N1 as a starting point for creating the linux kernel. The Evo may help a little with some drivers.
You have to understand... the kernel for the msm72xx devices (touchpro, TP2, kaiser, etc.) was started over 3 years ago... and they still don't have a fully-functional android port. There will be an android port eventually, but by time theres a fully functional port, there will be many nicer android phones out. Expect it to take a year or more for a fully-functional port, if it's ever FULLY-functional. Search the Rom section in the original Leo section for the official linux project thread.
Get the phone if you like WinMo 6.5. If not, wait for another phone. Trust me, there will be just as nice Android phones for tmobile in the next few months, and WinPhone 7 phones by the end of the year.
I think its time for a new HD2 Section... What do you think. Mods?
Rarely do I post but I do read (and seach) all the time. I believe that the initial problem with adding a section for android is that android is not at all ready for the HD2, respectively.
While I do sit back in amazement with how fast development is moving along, adding a android section would bring even more "one timers" (folks that register just to ask a question that has been answered 20 times before) and flood the boards even more than they were when the HTC-LINUX discussion was open.
Its my opinion that though android is looking spectacular at this point, until there is a reliable way to flash android to NAND or at least a build that can hold its own without making you reboot your phone over and over, the temporary solutions that the mods have decided upon should stay in place.
Id like to conclude this post by saying thank you to the team for continuing to develop the linux kernel and various builds on their free time.
Good day.

Wait until it can be flashed before you propose this. Having a ROM of android that can be flashed is better than using it through a loader.

Because they still need winmo to initialize a lot of the hardware. Only 1 or 2 winmo devices have flashable android roms out of over a dozen devices that have android ports... most having been developed for years. It will probably still be a while before there is a flashable rom... I don't see the appeal, anyways. It doesn't improve performance much, if any. And it takes away the ability to have both winmo and android on your phone. If you want to only run android, why not get an android device? By the time there is flashable android roms for the HD2, there will probably be android phones with specs and screen equal or better for all the carriers and countries people say they can't get good android phones for.
Why would you want to flash android instead of having the ability to run both winmo and android, and any other linux ports that are released? Is there any reason? I would much prefer a dual-booting power phone than making it just another android phone that probably won't run as well as a native android phone.

This is a good & thoughtful opinion, though I feel that a section just for Android will allow people to more easily access the basic information that 'one timers' want to get, so a new section might help this problem rather than making it worse.
It would keep it all in one place, which would leave the ROM development section for WinMo rom discussion only.
There have been Android sections for Xperia, Pro2, Pro, Blackstone etc while the port was much more immature than the HD2 Port.
Now almost everything is working in Android, and there's lots of discussion & various people putting builds together on a regular basis.
Due to this progress and huge level of interest, I think it's time for a separate section for Android on HD2.

Man, I seriously doubt your statement here ...
Do you have any comparative numbers to back your opinion there? Fact is, Android runs "on top" of WinMo right now. Meaning you have a complete operating system running in the background.
I really expect at least some noticeable performance improvement if an optimized android is running standalone on the HD2.

Look at the other ports on other devices. Go read the threads. Sometimes when flashed to nand they will lose some functionality until they get driers right and every initializes right.
And Android does not run on top of winmo... where do you get that from?? Android is running stand-alone while it's running. It all runs from ram... only speed difference is the speed that data gets sent to ram, which is quicker with nand, but not enough to make a big difference. Haret shuts down the windows ce kernel and boot the linux kernel. You can't have 2 kernels running at once. The windows kernel does help by initializing some hardware, but it get completely shut down. Thats why you can't just close out of android and go back to windows. Its not emulated. I've been playing with these android ports for years using haret with many different winmo devices.
Having a faster memory card probably make some difference, too, but again, only with certain tasks. Most things I don't think you'd see a huge speed difference in actual operation.
I think YES !!!
i don't think that an android section would get more people asking for android builds. Especially if you add a sticky in top of the section regarding the progress of android and that it's not finished yet. I think it should be a android development thread only so people that are interested in the development know were to look.
Futhermore i think there should be a good explenation on how to install android and get it working so people can easily try android for themselves and see that it's not nearly opperational yet.
last but not least. there'll always be people asking if android is finished. These people are just too ignorant to recognize how a forum works and read a thread. They are not actually interested in the progress of all the great developers here but just want a quick fix to show of to their friends. They should brick there device and buy an android phone.
don't let the people that are really interested suffer from the ignorant fools.
sorry but i needed to get that of my chest.
that's my opinion,
greets Boris.
I think its getting ridiculous here. Please mods open a new Android HD2 section. There is so much information out there for Android on the HD2 its getting messy in this section. The poll tells you what the people want.

Hahahahaha, I just love how they put this thread in the android section, i laugh every time i see it
Thanks for adding this new forum ! I always like how XDA staff is listening to their users.
I see a problem about this forum though:
'HD2 Android Development' naming is erroneous for following two reasons:
-Most elementary progress is seated in the kernel - which has nothing to do with android in the first place. The kernel is Linux and not Android.
-Android is not the only userland based on Linux that is available. As seen here there is ubuntu and other stuff.
I therefore vote we rename the forum to 'HD2 Linux and Android development'
I have seen a ubuntu thread already where the user complains he is actually posting in the wrong subforum due to this naming problem.
edit: Find a thread discussing this issue XDA globally see here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=654560

Let's be nice. Android is pretty limitless many things can be added. Winmo is sorta outdated. Right now winmo has a lot of community support but that's just not enough. Try it . Dont expect anything and see what you get.
Biggest problem I see is winmo users go into android expecting the same experience.

Funny one
topic: some things are better with android, some arent. I think the interesting fact is to chose the operating system YOU want to use.
You can compare it with the operating system situation on your PC. Some people want to use Ubuntu, OpenSUSE, MacOSX,.....
I think it's a perfectly legitimate question: Not everyone has the love of digital adventures, tweaking or driving someone with more knowledge up the wall we do.
Why not just say what you like about Android? Unless you're not sure....well?
I enjoy reconfiguring my phone. I must have flashed custom WinMo ROM's a hundred times and radios tens of times. Configuring script to put my applications back the way they were, testing the build for smooth operation, stability and features had been a thrill of mine...my hobby, I guess you'd say, since the HD stemming from late 2008.
Android just kind of picks up where Winmo left off. I'm using Elegancia ROM and have been for months. It works great with the Android offerings.
Is Android better? If that's your question, then in my opinion, WinMo is better than Android on the HD2 as of this writing, by Android on this device is catching up incredibly fast.
Maybe you'll like it, maybe not. If your interested enough to chance getting flamed, then you are most likely a candidate to give it a go.
3 simple reasons
1. faster internet browsing
-android have simply a faster browsing experience for me, faster than opera on wm anyday
2. market
-the abundance of customization and application in the android market vs the wm store is like comparing a walmart to a gas convience store for choice of app and avaibility of apps
3. utility
-android simply utilize our screen and hardware much more efficently than windows. try the foursquare app on windows, and then try the foursquare app on android, it's like comparing a dirt road to a 5 lane highway in terms of usability and speed

Try it and see. Nothing to lose except maybe half an hour of your time.
As said above its 'hoarses for coarses'. I wasnt expecting much from Android because Minmo did everything I needed +more, plus it looked ok visually IMHO using CHT etc.
But android just feels slicker somehow...plus I'm not yet missing any of the features that I thought I really loved in winmo. Just the fact of having a good Market is a BIG plus for some people (myself now included although I always thought I'd never care for thousands of mainly pointless apps )....Android is generally a LOT more finger friendly than any 6.5.x build..... the list goes on.
Personally I am becoming a convert FAST. I will almost deffinately switch soley to Android when a proper android rom is released.
Dual booting is great and its always nice to have the option of two O/S's, but I find myself wanting to see Winmo less and less everytime I wake my new Android phone from its beuty sleep I just dont love Winmo like I used too lol.
But the only way you will ever really know is if you try it for yourself go on you (probably) wont be dissapointed.
WinMo stock = sack of **** on the HD2, you have to hack and slash away until you eventually get something that works. Then, and only then can you continue to play around with it.
Android, out of the box it works, and your free to play around with it and make it your own. If it wasn't for Android my HD2 would have be sold.
The touch screen and general Windows Mobile performance just pissed me off, you could triple the power of the HD2 and you still wouldn't get a smooth, slick experience.

i like android because of the limitless apps, you'll never need for anything again for a phone. the market was the main reason for me because most apps are free, now google maps include free navigation! windows mobile who? lol plus even with android being ported to our hd2 it out performs windows mobile, less freezes and errors. programmed to work better! internet browsing, smoother and faster. once u learn all the features and how to use widgets u will like wmo less and less. i never seen myself becoming a fan of android when i was solely against it when i had touch pro 2
Me??? Because WinMo is Sh*t. If I couldn't have loaded Android on this HD2... it would have been on Craigslist an hour after I got it.
Unless of course bloated, clunky, slow, crashing, lack luster garbage is someone's thing... l would advice them to stay away from Android.

I look at all these threads and Roms and see the same thing over and over...bugs...bugs....and more bugs...
The most stable Windows Rom I've truly experience is the stock one...lol...not being a smart a$$ at all. Everything just works. Take a registry editor to it and it's provided the most stable platform with Core Cell 3 a hair away from it.
Now, with Android, I see constant bug reports. I mean, people seem to have a great appreciation for the builds and love them, but it always follows up with a major bug...or even worse...lots of little bugs.
What I don't understand is why don't all you devs get together and build the "XDA" Custom Rom or "XDA" Android build that gets undiveded attention and all resources so to make it truly BUG free? Once that has been accomplished...then we can go ahead and try these test builds and play with them...
Now, I say this with a great deal of respect, having worked with developers before I know how fragile the ego's can be
It's also my experience with those same developers that taught me complete focus of resources surfaced the best result.
I mean, an effort like that is something I would pay...eeerrrrr....donate too.
Android seems to be the future for the HD2, at least I think so...some may have a different opinion...that's cool. But as much as I actually like WinMo 6.5...and WinMO 7 showing signs of being a demo at best on the HD2, Android has a future.
I think it would be a great idea for you guys to focus on one thing at a time until it's at a state you can consider it marketable...not that I'm saying that's what you should do...sell things and all.
I would even think it would be cool to take WinMo 6.5 and change it into something completely different and better than what Microsoft settled for...I always promote making Big Brother look silly with a superior view of their own product.
My point is...no matter what platform or approach...get together on it...I bet the result would be far more productive.
I fear though that this idea...no matter how much sense it makes...will not come to fruition...WHAT THE DEUCE!
Looking forward to your thoughts.
well i came up with this idea http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=902534 and would need a thew devs to work on it,about having our own unoficiall Android Rom,Something wich we can say is our own HD2 rom not direct ports if you know were im coming from and pretty much bug free and stable and fast.i know a thew devs came together to create nand so why not do it to create a rom
Thew?

Hah, bug free... That's an interesting idea. The last bug free thing I saw was my Nokia 3210. Since then even my microwave ovens get bugs.
The devs do work together for the most part... different problems get solved by different devs, and they credit each other. I think its amazing what they've accomplished. You should be more than happy with how well we have a port working. I never thought it would get as good as it has, especially as quick as it has. Just look at the Raphael or blackstone... they've been working on ports for those devices for years and are nowhere close to where we are, and might never be.
The devs are doing what they can. This is their hobby... they're gonna work on what interests them. You can't expect them to all work on what you want them to... they would lose interest and we wouldn't have so much innovation. Plus a little competition can bring the best out of a person.

Well most of the bugs in Android are at the kernel level, and there is already a group of developers working on that same piece of software together.
You also have to keep in mind, as other users in this thread have already said, that no software will be without bugs.
I guess...I just know with absolute confidence this idea will work best. Nonetheless, I understand. Also, it's not what I want?...its about completing a task these forums have already put in motion...just at a more effective manor.
i want sense build base on desire hd or z
its will be lite enuf to run from RAM and boot fast
the Data.img will be backed up in the nand but will work from SD card for better performance
that's what i think is perfect to me
RAM gives boot time and less battery drain
data.img on nand and sd card is for better iops and for backuping ur info fast with CWM
u can remove anything u dont use cos it wont be in the RAM
all most important things like email / messages / people browser will run from RAM to get the speed-est performance
As has been stated, aren't most the bugs pretty common to all builds in one way or another therefore indicating that the problem is at the programming level rather than the rom developer level.
IMHO find one you're happy with and take the bugs with a pinch of salt - the HD2 is still one of the most exciting handsets about and to have the ability to experiment with all this thanks to the ROM guys and the tools developers on here is just blooming fantastic!
Stop moaning and appreciate what we have here!
Personally, I think this is a bad idea.
I'm very happy to have multiple developers all working on different projects and supplying us with different ROMs. For example, I hate HTC Sense and prefer stock Android, but lots of people disagree with that and think Sense builds are superior.
If all the devs worked on only 1 ROM then that's all we'd have. 1 ROM. My phone would be the same as yours, and yours would be the same as every other person on the forum. That would be pretty darn boring! If you ask me, more choice is better.
"If everybody looked the same, we'd get tired of looking at each other."
I never said stop working on different flavors of Roms. Just focus on an XDA Rom. Once refined, let the flavors flow...right?
You know, I approach this topic from a respective and open discussion approach with an expressed curiosity at most and the best you can do is confuse it for moaning?
It's guys like you that start all the flaming, when you have people who are simply exchanging ideas.
There's always a few out of the bunch that can't resist being abrasive aka a$$holes while others are just chatting.
