Sony Ericsson and ANT+ equals fitness with Xperia™ arc
Marcus Hansson explains more about ANT+.
At Sony Ericsson we are very pleased to announce that we will be the first mobile handset manufacturer to have integrated support for ANT+ technology. This means that you will be able to use your Sony Ericsson phone with a large number of commercial health and fitness products. For example, you can use your phone with a heart rate monitor, a pedometer, or both, when you are out running.
There are number of different ANT+ enabled sensors and devices available in the market today. In addition, there are a large number of ANT+ supported apps to collect, analyze, compare and share your data in various ways. These devices and apps can turn your Sony Ericsson handset into a main hub for fitness and health activities, as well as for communication and entertainment.
ANT+ is a seamless and reliable digital wireless communication standard with excellent power efficiency. It facilitates the collection, automatic transfer and tracking of sensor data for monitoring information. Today more and more companies are joining the ANT+ Alliance, which is a partner alliance striving for the growth of the ANT+ ecosystem. This ensures compatibility with other leading suppliers all throughout the ecosystem. With the release of Xperia™ arc, Sony Ericsson is the first handset manufacturer to have integrated support for ANT+. The ANT+ support will also be introduced in Sony Ericsson Xperia™ X8, Xperia™ X10 mini, and Xperia™ X10 mini pro through software upgrades in Q1 2011. Several future Sony Ericsson Android™ devices will also support ANT+ technology.
Stay tuned to the Sony Ericsson Developer blog and to Sony Ericsson’s Developer World for more information. You can also read more on the ANT+ web site.

As said in the video, "… and X8 will have this enabled in the forthcoming software upgrade in Q1 2011"
Could this be part of an Android upgrade? Or do they by "software upgrade" refer to apps? Either way, it's a cool feature.
We need 2.3 for that so we will get android update.
I think because this writing in SE blog.
Yeeeee they are chance that we will get 2.3 but when?
Who cares .. it's completely useless and sony will not deliver froyo on their phones.
Anyone still owning xperia, google "ZTE Blade" :
1. unlocked bootloader
2. froyo and custom roms
3. amoled screen
4. costs $100
Oh, and the best one :
5. NOT MADE BY Erics****!
no froyo for Xperia!

Do you mean that Ant+ requires Android 2.3 to run? Because of Xperia ARC, which uses 2.3 to run Ant+?

Lolz. We don't even have ZTE Blade where I live.
Hopefully this "software upgrade" will have to include an Android update, too.
Btw, Xperia users, join this community on Facebook:
"Petition: Android 2.2 (Froyo) for Sony Ericsson Xperia series"
I would like to highlight that all the news regarding the discontinuance of Froyo (Android 2.2) is related to the X10 FAMILY and X10 HANDSETS.
X8 does not belong to this family or these handsets, does it? Furthermore, the upcoming ANT+ feature will come to X10 mini, X10 mini pro and X8 - SE again, specifically, omitted the X10! The ANT+ feature will become available through a "software upgrade"!
They are either being unclear about the way they announce things or they are being VERY specific.

The x8 DOES belong to the x10 family, its seen as the mid size/range x10... if you bothered to read the first line from the article linked above about an official announcement from SE UK, you'd see yourself...
Sony Ericsson UK have officially confirmed with us this morning that the Xperia X10 family (including the X8) will not see an Android firmware revision above 2.1)

They'll do an update to 2.1 to make this ANT+ feature work, they wouldn't announce no further updates past 2.1, but secretly be developing 2.2 etc for the x10 family of handsets, its bad for business if they do...
We wont b getting 2.2 or 2.3 whatsoever, juz an update in the future n we will still on 2.1..
Accept the truth my frens, we will stuck on 2.1 forever.. Thts it, no more SE phones for me..
Yeah, SE confirm no more update new FW for X10 family and no hope for X8, epic fail....
we arent stuck. sometime someone will crack ****ed se loader and we will get froyo..
p.s. i think there wont be gingerbread coz it will run too slow.. recomended hardware is 1GHz cpu..

I haven't seen/been able to dig up any information directly from Sony Ericsson that mentions the X8. It only seems to be mentioned in the article you refer to.
Regardless of that … If the X8 is considered part of the X10 family then we are truly screwed.
However, I am curious regarding the Ant+ feature. Why did they omit the X10 specifically in their announcement? I find it odd that the X10 - supposedly - doesn't support the hardware for Ant+ but the X10 mini, X10 mini pro and X8 does.

SE don't want to update their current android phones because of marketing.
people will have to buy xperia arc to get android 2.3. good for their bussiness. this is how it's work.
Here what i think.
Many people has buyed many xperia smartphones but the xperia arc isnt like other xperia phones because they are cheap but xperia arc isnt.
What happen to us that will scare customers to so maybe they give update.
MAYBE!
Can anyone port the 3d sweep panorama to Xperia play?
I wish...

Yes it would be kind... but it seems no one is interrested in.
It would take having the kernel sources, new library files, and camera.apk. Which Sony Ericsson phone already has it?
Would be cool

Our Camera is **** so I doubt even if we had the 3D Sweep it would not look any good anyway.
Strange that it is listed on SE site as a feature, could be a mistake though.

It's all explained in the Sony Ericsson blog
Global roll out of new software
In late September we announced the rollout of Android 2.3.4 in the Nordic Countries. Today, we’re happy to share the news that the upgrade is starting to roll out all over the rest of the world. Since the Nordic release we have made some additional changes which means that this update is actually new also for the Nordic consumers.
The phones that will get the software update are: Xperia™ arc, Xperia™ PLAY, Xperia™ neo, Xperia™ mini, Xperia™ mini pro, Xperia™ pro, Xperia™ ray, Xperia™ active, Xperia™ neo V, Xperia™ arc S and the Sony Ericsson Live with Walkman™. The update will be available for all unlocked phones and most operator variants but there will be local deviations. There are also some deviations on feature upgrade depending on phone model. Google Talk video chat will only be available for phones with front facing camera. Xperia™ PLAY will not get 3D panorama sweep but it will get HD video recording and the other goodies below.
The highlights of the update are:
Google Talk with Video Chat for smartphones with front-facing cameras
Updated Facebook inside Xperia™ functionality for enhanced like, share and discover abilities. We have talked about Facebook inside Xperia™ on previous posts.
Xperia™ smartphones introducing world’s first 3D Sweep Panorama functionality powered by Sony.
16x video zoom
The software upgrade will enable consumers to turn their Xperia™ smartphone into a mini-mobile PC by connecting USB peripherals (mouse, keyboard or game controller) to Sony Ericsson LiveDock™ multimedia station. Connect the smartphone to a TV via HDMI to get a big screen experience.
Gesture input – text input by swiping the finger from one letter to the next
WiFi DLNA
Screen capture – allows the user to share a screen grab from anywhere in the phone.
It’s quite a lot to grasp all at once. That’s why we are making next week an Update Marathon, going through one of the features more in depth every day. Stay tuned Meanwhile, you can check out the video from the guys at Developer World.
We’ll try to keep you continuously updated on the kit release. For a complete list of kits released up until now, please check comments below.
I would just like the panorama app to actually work it sucks that my old x10 can do it and that it works on other phones except this thing I hold in my hand kinda pathetic for a brand new phone IMO

Xperia Arc/S, Neo, Active, Mini/Pro with GB 2.3.4 has it. Just the Play not :/ Is Sony trolling us? They told they would maximaly support the Play but no 3D Sweep atrough it has a good camera. (Yea "just 5Mpx" but sometimes a lower res. is better)

Seriously, who's in the right mind that prolly test the app w/in 30 secs?
Props to thatsup, for being epic on the discussion..
Wow, can't believe no one's blaring klaxxons about this yet....
In short, the X10 will be getting OFFICIAL CM7 support from the Cyanogenmod team... with nightlies, a forum over at cyanogenmod.com,and possibly even official MIUI (since miui is built on cm).
Here you go:
The CyanogenMod and FreeXperia team is happy to announce CyanogenMod support for multiple Xperia™ devices.
Users of Sony Ericsson devices have been left out of the CyanogenMod experience for a while now. We are happy to announce that users will be able to enjoy a full-fledged CyanogenMod with nearly full hardware support (we are still working on FM radio) starting in our next release. You can also expect nightly builds and more instructions soon.
The following devices will be supported:
2011 lineup:
Xperia™ arc
Xperia™ neo
Xperia™ mini
Xperia™ mini pro
Xperia™ PLAY
Xperia™ ray
Xperia™ active (when available)
Xperia™ pro (when available)
Older lineup:
Xperia™ X10
Xperia™ X8
Xperia™ X10 mini
Xperia™ X10 mini pro
Andreas Makris (Bin4ry), Diogo Ferreira (defer) and Alin Jerpelea (jerpelea) will be maintaining these devices from now on.
We would like to stress that work on the 2011 lineup would not have been possible without the strong involvement of Sony Ericsson with the developer community. In addition to providing unlockable bootloaders to all new devices, they provided us both with devices and technical expertise that proved invaluable in making all this happen.

Yeah our search feature is quite awesome
In the latest software upgrade we did for the 2011 Xperia™ phones, we’ve included WebGL™ support. By doing so, Sony Ericsson is the first mobile phone manufacturer to support WebGL for the Android web browser. WebGL basically makes it possible to extend the capability of the JavaScript programming language to allow it to generate interactive 3D graphics within the web browser. Read more about Sony Ericsson’s WebGL support after the jump, and find out about special considerations to keep in mind when developing 3D web applications targeting touch-enabled devices.
In this article, Anders Isberg from Sony Ericsson’s Technology Reseach department explains more about WebGL and what to think of when you develop 3D web applications for touch-enabled devices. If you scroll down, you will also find three WebGL examples that you can browse to from the Android browser, if you have the latest software on your 2011 Xperia™ phone.

With the stock browser, it seems so. It's just like what SE claimed.
It tested it today it works amazing. Good that Sony realizes how important after sales support is. Once someone takes the initiative others will follow.

Just my opinion: I wouldn't jump ship on an OS just because Sony couldn't make it work. I have an XPlay for personal use and a iPhone4 for work. I would gladly go back to my old Eris before making the iPhone my main device. If you're really hurting for something ICS-ish, unlock it and slap on a new ROM.
