I called it about 5 months ago but for different reasons

not sure how an official blog post on the Xperia website is a rumor... we arent getting it... not from sony atleast

Im going to be blunt here:
We dont need it. Gingerbread works fine
For those who think we do need it: You dont NEED it...You WANT it

Just my opinion: I wouldn't jump ship on an OS just because Sony couldn't make it work. I have an XPlay for personal use and a iPhone4 for work. I would gladly go back to my old Eris before making the iPhone my main device. If you're really hurting for something ICS-ish, unlock it and slap on a new ROM.

News from SE!!

Something is going on, so just wanted to share with U and give (back) some hope:

quote:
"We have been having a lot of questions regarding the update for our 2011 Xperia™ phones to the new Android 2.3.4 version. And we are happy to tell you that today we announced that the 2.3.4 version of Gingerbread platform for all the 2011 Xperia™ Smartphones will start the roll out during October at select markets."
Let's hope for the best!
Cheers,
it is update for 2011 phones such as arc, neo, play, pro,...
X8, X10/mini/pro are listed in the 2010 Xperia phones
...segtawee.....
But our sibling W8 was 2011 phone...
Sent from my E15i using XDA App
i am using a W8.... but after i installed Gingerdx... it shows that my model number is X8...
does that means i will not be getting the update ?
well... i prefer Dx's custom ROM better... more updates than the SE
i dont believe that the w8 will get the update..it is practically not a smartphone..and guys be realistic if the x8(or w8) havent gotten froyo how it is possible that we will get 2.3.4?just be happy for the devs here in xda

Open the build.prop in a text editor, change every "X8" to W8" and then reboot and have a look at settings-about phone again.

W8 won't get an update, because it isn't a 'Xperia' series phone. It is a 'Walkman' with android system.
Edit: Who cares we don't have 2.3.4? CM 7.1.0-pre is on 2.3.5!

Thanks for the tips... but it doesn't matter anyway...
the W8 is practically a X8 with a walkman logo on it..
Yes you're right, W8 is a X8 with a walkman logo. But W8 isn't a 'Xperia' series phone, so it won't get a update too.
x8 wont be updated to 2.3 because its not a 2011 xperia phone its a 2010 xperia smartphone. and as @samyeung97hk already said the w8 isnt an xperia phone at all its a walkman. its sad but true we wont be getting official 2.3
Well I guess its only the packaging of w8. Its like LG Optimus and its glossy version.

It probably won't get an update as the x8 won't get an update. If the W8 gets an update us x8 users should get an update too because W8 firmware is virtually identical to x8 firmware. But SE has mentioned that x8 will not get update so W8 users probably will not get an update.

As I said earlier in this thread, W8 isn't a 'Xperia' series phone. Although it's spec/firmware are the same, it won't get an update either.
Edit: Every Android phones are upgradable if the spec allows/have devs to develop firmware.

OFFICIAL Cyanogenmod (CM7) for Xperia devices

Wow, can't believe no one's blaring klaxxons about this yet....
In short, the X10 will be getting OFFICIAL CM7 support from the Cyanogenmod team... with nightlies, a forum over at cyanogenmod.com,and possibly even official MIUI (since miui is built on cm).
Here you go:
The CyanogenMod and FreeXperia team is happy to announce CyanogenMod support for multiple Xperia™ devices.
Users of Sony Ericsson devices have been left out of the CyanogenMod experience for a while now. We are happy to announce that users will be able to enjoy a full-fledged CyanogenMod with nearly full hardware support (we are still working on FM radio) starting in our next release. You can also expect nightly builds and more instructions soon.
The following devices will be supported:
2011 lineup:
Xperia™ arc
Xperia™ neo
Xperia™ mini
Xperia™ mini pro
Xperia™ PLAY
Xperia™ ray
Xperia™ active (when available)
Xperia™ pro (when available)
Older lineup:
Xperia™ X10
Xperia™ X8
Xperia™ X10 mini
Xperia™ X10 mini pro
Andreas Makris (Bin4ry), Diogo Ferreira (defer) and Alin Jerpelea (jerpelea) will be maintaining these devices from now on.
We would like to stress that work on the 2011 lineup would not have been possible without the strong involvement of Sony Ericsson with the developer community. In addition to providing unlockable bootloaders to all new devices, they provided us both with devices and technical expertise that proved invaluable in making all this happen.

ICS upgrade available next week

Sony just revealed that remaining 2011 xperia smartphone will get upgraded to ICS 4.0.4 next week, except Xperia PLAY(poor u) in order not to affect gaming performance.
NXT series will get the upgrade in the order of S, P, and then U.
Now, we are happy to confirm that the remaining 2011 smartphones; Xperia arc, Xperia neo, Xperia mini, Xperia mini pro, Xperia pro, Xperia active and Sony Ericsson Live with Walkman will start to receive their updates starting from next week.
This software upgrade will be Android version 4.0.4 and the good news is that this latest version will also be made available for Xperia arc S, Xperia ray and Xperia neo V users, who received Android 4.0.3 the first time around.
In regards to Xperia PLAY, after extensive in house testing with our developer teams and working with our partners, we have concluded that a consistent and stable experience, particularly with gaming, cannot be guaranteed for this smartphone on Ice Cream Sandwich – therefore, we will not make the Android 4.0 upgrade available for Xperia PLAY.

Thanks for giving such a great news..
yea.. i saw xperia s running 4.0.4 few days ago..it was damn smooth though..
I was wondering the same question how will Sony fix the gaming problem on ICS for the Xperia play? And there is the answer may it be just for now, no ICS for play until the gaming problem is solved. Great news for my Arc S
is there any particular date for ics to come???
and thnxxxx for the news
bec just had a rom of android 4.0.4 and now only i had put the stock .62 fw for the ics
And Gud news is tat 4.0.4 wil be available for Arc S, Neo V and Ray which got a buggy 4.0.3 update. ;-)

Finally! I've been waiting for this for a while now and was jealous of the arc S, which received the ICS update earlier.
I'm hoping for a 'smooth' experience with 4.0.4. Any idea if we'd be getting a newer kernel?

probably this is the decision made by sony and the game vendors
This decision was also verified when we received similar feedback from the developer community; both experienced developers and advanced users, along with game content providers following our ICS beta ROM for unlocked Xperia PLAY smartphones.

previously sony said ICS will still run with the obsolete kernel 2.6.32 in order to release ICS as quickly as possible in January. i just hope after 4-5 months of development they can release a 3.0 kernel in the near future.
we also see xperia s running ICS with 3.0.8 kernel, hope Sony or some skilled developer could port it to xperia arc?
It is rather quick to get a new kernel up and running, but it takes a lot of testing and validation to make it stable and run with the modem, get a good battery performance etc. Quite some effort has been put in to the Sony Ericsson 2.6.32 kernel, to make it as stable and reliable as possible for the 8255 platform, and we do not feel that the user benefit of a new kernel would justify a later release date.

And you miss the most important thing...
We were glad to provide the Android 4.0.4 upgrade for our 2011 Xperia portfolio across most markets and the majority of models but, after thorough evaluation, we have concluded they will not be upgraded beyond Ice Cream Sandwich.
Beyond Ice Cream Sandwich we would not able to guarantee owners of these smartphones the user experience you expect and we demand. We will however, continue to support all these products with firmware maintenance releases.

Seriously, my phone runs much smoother in JB than on ICS... Thnk you SONY -.-
Seriously Sony's multimillionaire software department can't make a good JB firm for Neo/Arc/S and can do it for Xperia J?
Disappointing but expected news. I'm personally not surprised. It's most likely for marketing. And anyways it's been almost 2 years already since their release. I guess Sony wants everyone to buy their current and future lineup of Xperias.
We should also be thankful that Sony upgraded our phones to ICS. LG isn't even upgrading their 2011 phones as far as I know.
Sony Mobile isn't as big as Samsung or HTC. Cut them some slack.

So, first you moan because Sony doesn't give out an update.
Then, if an update is released, then you moan even more about all the little problems it has.
They are not your slaves. Give them time to work, you are not the only customers out there. Besides, your phone is not the only one there.
But atleast they should have update arc s to jb isnt 1.4 ghz enough for jb wtf they was saying that they are checking the devices etc.

I only don't understand why they don't upgrade the arc s... But I think this is the biggest problem with android. Look to samsung, the sgs plus was released almost the same time as the arc s, has similar parts and price and didn't even got ics...
I think the problem is that Sony is lazy to do the JB upgrade. JB requires same requirements as ics the only down side is the 512 mb memory but other phone with the same phone power will still deliver the JB hope they can get back in there word qnd deliver JB to us.

No excuses for Sony really they could provide codes so developers can port JB into older devices unless we launch a huge outrage just like the X10 fiasco.

So...are there any phones that could actually replace my Pro? :/

Best way is ..more of us ...to don't buy any sony phone ,because they take this fkkk solution ....not to give us ..the owner of 1.4 GHz ..sony device ..a taste of JB...., that's shame ...
I will sell my device and bye a decent phone....( to have 1GB RAM , front facing camera , enough internal storage .., not like this ..420 MB...., and also a decent battery .) , because I don't want to spend all my money to bye a new phone ..every 5 months ...
This is why I'm getting a Samsung phone next year. Samsung's flagship model from 2011 got JellyBean. and what is more pathetic, JB is incomparably smoother and faster than ICS.
time to change brand!
Well, the last few weeks I've been confused whether my next device will be a Nexus, a Lumia or an Xperia,
now I just need to choose between the first two
(Not that Lumia will surely provide better support, I want to know how good/bad is WP8 through experience, I'll keep the arc S though, still the sexiest phone I've ever had)

Sony plans to deliver Android 4.3 upgrade to Xperia SP

So, Sony’s Jelly Bean 4.2 upgrade for Xperia Z and Xperia ZL is well underway* – next up, Xperia ZR and Xperia Tablet Z will start receiving 4.2 from early August.
Yesterday you probably saw Google announce the next version of Jelly Bean (Android 4.3) – we’re already getting stuck in and can confirm we’ll make 4.3 available for: Xperia Z, Xperia ZL, Xperia ZR, Xperia Tablet Z, Xperia SP and Xperia Z Ultra…
We’re also looking at uplifting some of our other devices running 4.1 direct to 4.3 – we’ll share more info / deets / timings when we can, so be sure to follow @sonymobileNews for all the latest.
If you fancy learning a little bit more about the technical side of our software development, check out Developer World’s latest piece on how we’re improving and refining our efforts to bring users new Android versions.
On that note, thank you for all the feedback on our Jelly Bean 4.1 rollout for Xperia 2012 products – we’re aware the process hasn’t been as succinct or as timely as you might’ve expected. As part of Developer World’s piece, Fredrik Ekstrand, our Head of Software Product Management, elaborates on some of the reasons for this, but essentially – we’ve heard your frustrations and are constantly improving the way we do things.
If you have any questions, feel free to drop them below.

Don't get me wrong, I would love to be wrong They are currently doing big efforts to be efficient and that why I bought a sony device in the first place.
They are the first to reply at the google announce so I hope for the best.
I would like to suggest the DEV Team to pay special attention to the Camera and Audio quality on the latest Xperia 2013 line , Using the the exmor sensor and as it was hyped the quality is just horrible and unacceptable from a sony device.
Just release the AOSP for this! Then the "XDA Dev Team" *lol* can take over..
It owuld be much easier for them.

That's true. But I still stand by my choice of getting AOSP for the phone first.

Errr ,the S advance not consider laggy ....=.=
What I see from the ROM ,they put the default min and max frequency is always 1000MHz
And the RAM management is unoptimize , the apps always in buzy usage and phone just hang at there ,need to wait it respond back

A few hours ago the 4.2.2 update for the ZR started to roll. I hope we see it in our C530X in a few days or weeks

No they didn't. Where the f did you even read that? They both implied that the SP update won't come early august and that they won't be skipping 4.2. That or they don't know how to write news releases.
