Hi,
I picked up a Note 10.1 from Amazon yesterday. When it arrived, like the other thread has mentioned. It came with the seal broken. However I wasn't too worried.
Today I was using it in a quiet room and without putting too much pressure on the tablet while holding it. I could easily produce creaking sounds by gently holding the Note 10.1 in landscape by the sides.
I love this tablet in all aspects. But it really bothers me as this is a sign of poor production quality control.
I am willing to give it another chance, but I want to know if yours make the creaking sound as well.
Thanks for your help.
no creaking sounds on my tablet and I had broken seals also from bestbuy... just return it for a new one... WD40 is good for creaks but dont recommend them on tablets.
Mine does a little and being all plastic I assumed it would before I purchased it.It's not a big deal to me.

Maybe once,
but it's produced by Samsung,so you konw...
Mine has never creaked in the least. Who knows. Could just be a quality control issue on a few units. There have been a number of units with light bleed as well while most are just fine.
Consider getting a nice sturdy case for it. Not a bad idea anyway

No sound on mine
Absolutely no sounds on my tab regardless of how I hold it.
This is not normal, return it.
I bought mine on BB few days after release.
Yes, mine creaks extensively. My only complaint. I have grey 16GB and on the right side it creaks anytime i touch it. I have it in case too. I was curious if the white one doesnt creak but my creak doesn't seem like its a small amount. I considered returning it but its such a perfect tablet i was cautious i might get one that isnt perfect (sorry i used to be a Prime and Infinity user and it left a bad taste in my mouth) or one whose speaker doesnt work. But...its not a subtle creak at all, which is why i considered it in the first place. Biggest creaks for me are on the right side under the speaker (just touching my finger on the edge of the panel creaks, i dont need to press) and on the bottom left side of the screen to the left of the down arrow). I will consider returning it now after reading some of these comments... just worried because everything else is perfect including screen (again, ex-Prime user got me paranoid about returning a near perfect tablet). I know this is a ridiculous thing to complain about but the creak is quite loud, as i notice it in meetings and during a class. Also of course at night. If it didn't make a sound, and instead just had flexibility, i wouldn't complain as much. I know it's ridiculous but the tablet cost quite a lot...

No. But, I haven't tried to bend it (like those reviewers I've read about) or put a lot of pressure on it. I just hold it. Lightly touch and swipe the screen. I just use enough force to get a response.
16GB Grey, creaks every time I pick it up, so annoying. Oh well.
I originally thought mine was creaking. It ended up being my finger squeaking on the plastic when I picked it up.

I am testing a white 16 GB unit, it creaks at the same spot, but it is not as severe. Still, not something I would expect in this price range. Maybe there is connection with a pen space, it creaks only in that area :S

That's what I thought exactly. It has to do with the S Pen's slot. I also just realized I had mine for a month, it definitely passed my "lets see if I want to keep this or return it" period. I love it.

how tight is everyone's slider mechanism? If you grab the screen with one hand and grab the keyboard with the other (while closed or open), does it twist much?
I have a little play with the slider but its barely noticeable. I've come to expect this with all slider phones.

I wasn't sure if it was normal or not. Haven't ever had a slider. I'm not a huge fan of how the keyboard doesn't really "snap" open, but it's a darn nice keyboard to me either way
I've had mine in the blue/black case from radioshack since the 6th. In the case is has pratically no play at all, out of the case its just as awesome.
I was worried it being in the case might damage it, buts it great so far.
Sent from my bathroom, with toilet paper.
Mine's developed a little play when it's closed. By that I mean the screen can move slightly before more force is required to open the keyboard.
When the keyboard is open, there's also a small amount of play with the screen. The screen can 'twist' a bit if I push down on the right or left side.
Small annoyances but I'm not sure it would be any different if I took it back for a new one.
I never noticed the "new" plastic wrap thats on either side of the keyboard, after i removed it, the slider is smoother and more responsive. Feels really solid to me.
My wife's has never had any play at all. The slider feels smooth and crisp. Compared to my old Epic which would bend and move its quite refreshing to not feel like I could break the phone by opening it.
I'm going back to radioshack and trade my phone for a newer shift because it seems like my slider keeps getting worse and worse. And I also have a black hue at the bottom of my screen. Now I remember why I hate sliders. Lol.

Wow.. I cant believe I didnt notice it either until I saw this post... I was like, no way could I have missed that after using it constantly for 2 weeks. But there it is...
P.S. - seconds after posting I realized that the protective plastic wrap is not only on both sides of the keyboard. If you slide your keyboard out and turn the phone around, you will notice that the entire backside of the screen surface (where it reads "with Google") is covered in a large sheet of the same plastic. After all of the plastic is off there is definitely a noticable difference in the smoothness of the slider. Thanks again to stealthfx.

Wow, me too
Good : Well i love the new tablet and in hand its light and a pleasure to use, the Plastic back is nice in hand and not slippery and visually this tablet is great. But ...........
Bad and Ugly : Here's my issue with the new Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1
What is happening and i can see this being a big problem down the road of use is that when i hold the Tab with my left hand in portrait with the dock connector on my palm of the left hand, the thin piece of the housing is getting bent and pulled away from the glass and over time i see this getting stretched out. i think Samsung should have built the aluminum edging more webbing in the glass to keep that delicate piece from being so flexible and flimsy.
Anyone else having/noticing this issue or any other flaws, defects ????
Here's a few pics of what i am mentioning :

Damn, and here I was pondering returning my Transformer for a better build quality Samsung. Shootz!
I still may do it though since I never use portrait mode and for the most part it will be on a stand, but still, it sucks to see that.
You must have a 10.1v
I have the Google i/o edition and the side looks different than your with regard to the placement of those round hole covers on either side in relation to the curve.
I think that on the i/o (hopefully it will be the same as the 10.1) it has resolved that issue. I am trying to hold it as you are mentioning and I see no movement whatsoever. even if i try to pry at it, it is super solid.
is your a 10.1v?

mines from San Fran USA - Dev Conference , its the white back Limited Edition
Everyone needs to specify details regarding there unit if they have one. It is clear that the limited edition/early release galaxy tabs are not identically the same as the one yet to be released.
thats really strange, your tablet looks way different than mine which also came from the recent i/o event.

it would seem there were multiple version of the same device if you have the limited edition white backed then...
anyone else? which do you have?

im trying to re-create your picture to make sure its not an optical illusion, but your bottom half of the silver bezel looks so angular/curved compared to mine which as you can see from the picture above is much less curved. Espeically noticeable with the small round hole covers on either end of the connector, mine are not very curves, yours seemvery curved and angular.

I don't understand - are you using it while something is plugged into the dock connector, or is just from normal use? Maybe you are just holding it wrong?
normal use , i take very good care of my toys hahaha
And no i don't have it plugged in when using it
if you hold it left handed its normal i find that the palm and strong of the thumb seem to put stress on the thin strip of aluminum and slightly pulls it away from the glass since on mine the thin strip is not any thicker under the glass as what i can see visually. so its seems to be a weak point of the aluminum bezel
Bummer i wonder if a port plug would help.

I am not experiencing that same problem, but the glass in one of the corners does appear to be pealing up. Link below. Hoping that this is as far as it raises, but who knows... I talked to the Samsung guy at Google I/O and had my first device replaced for a similar issue I noticed there, and he said this first batch was made by hand in a bit of a rush so that they would be available for us googlers. I expect that the automated and machine driven build process for the production units will have more consistent quality.

Harsh that looks bad. I think the quality of the aluminum bezel is to thin and over time with alot of use our holding styles will cause these kind of issues.

Just got off the phone with Samsung about this issue. They will allow me to send the unit to them for repair/replacement. Im just a little worried about going through the whole process only to find that they will send me back a unit with similar or worse build quality issues... Anyone else noticing problems with the screen raising up? Might just stick with what I have for fear of winding up with an even worse unit. Really was starting to fall in love with this thing.

I'm getting the same thing. Mine was this way out of the box at the conference, and with the plastic back pulling back, it looked like the tablet was warped. I popped it back into place and it looked good so I didn't say anything to anyone at the conference about it. I probably should have though, because now the screen is separating from the housing again in those two corners.
I stupidly threw away the blue card they gave at I/O that had the contact info for Samsung, who did you talk to about getting it repaired?
Not exactly getting a warm fuzzy feeling from this thread. I pre-ordered online. Starting to think I might want to cancel that and just wait for it at Best Buy, if even the Samsung tablets are having build quality issues.
Oh no. I was afraid these reports would begin to surface on the 10.1. Some of these issues described Ive seen in the 10.1v as well, although my biggest gripe with these is the severe backlight bleeding. I have now exchanged this device with Vodafone AU twice and seen a total of 6 units and all have had backlight bleeding and inconsistent build quality.
With the first unit I received both right corners of the screen were popping out over the bezel a little. I believed it to be a problem with the adhesive used, because if you were to put pressure on the corner it would hold for a second then release, and you could hear the "sticky" sound as the adhesive separated.
All the units I've sampled though have had really shocking problems with backlight bleeding/leakage. If you're someone who planned to watch movies on this tablet in dimly lit rooms, you could find this distracting. I do. Its a shame really because I otherwise like the quality of the display, and both 10.1 models are nicely designed and nice to hold. In a lot of ways I prefer the feel of the 10.1v over the iPad 2. Too bad though that the build quality is questionable across the range of what is now 3 different variants of the 10.1 that Samsung has produced. What's the deal Samy?!
I'm not sure what I'm going to do yet but most likely I'll return this 10.1v to Vodafail for a refund and wait it out for the 8.9. Perhaps I'll have better luck then?

So I have a few specs of dust under my screen. One makes the screen look like it has a dead pixel. I called Samsung and they want me to mail it in. Pry 7 day turnaround. I bought it out of town which is s five hour round trip so an exchange is possible.
I have an ipad 2 so I would only be having small withdrawals from my tab.
Should I go ahead and send it in and hope for the best or plan a road trip. I'm leaning towards shipping it as they are paying both ways. So zero cost.
Anyone else have dust and what would you do.

Got the same on my white galaxy tab 10.1 that I bought at Best Buy two days ago (maybe part of the initial Google I/O limited edition batch?).
I see four particles of dust but only when there is direct light over the screen. Thinking about exchanging it.
A curiosity, is your tab the white or metallic gray model?
Thanks!
Had 8 specs of dust under the screen towards the top right... made me so angry I returned it and plan on waiting for a better quality tab
I had one speck and planning to return it at BB. I got the white 16GB one. I'm afraid that the replacement will have more.

Are they visible under any conditions or only under certain conditions (e.g. direct sun light over the screen)?
I had this issue with 2 tabs, including the one I currently have. I saw it, exchanged it at best buy, and the new one has it too. I'm waiting for them to get a new shipment to exchange it again.
Silver 32g
The dust is visible from all angles, even when the screen is off.
I'm waiting on an exchange unit from compusa because my first tab had slight light bleed, specs of dust, and liquid-looking blotches under the screen only visible under direct sunlight. It also had some type of big, weird, dusty looking spot under the screen. when I first noticed the light bleed i was ok with it but after i noticed the other issues i decided to return it. I'm afraid the exchange unit will have these issues so I believe I should have sent it in to Samsung. It probably would have taken longer but atleast they'd make sure I received a tablet without these screen issues... probably lol but who knows?
I didn't take the dust under the screen thing that seriously, until today when I used my tab under some bright lights and noticed a glaring white piece of dust in one corner of the screen. Highly reflective on a black background and relatively noticeable. I'm really pretty amazed. I'm still within my Best Buy return window, and will probably bring it back tomorrow.
I'm curious, for those who returned it to Best Buy, did you tell them the true reason you were returning it and did they give you any trouble? Or did you simply say you weren't happy with it?
For those who exchanged, did any of you ultimately get a perfect unit?
Not sure if I should accept a single piece of dust in the far corner of the screen, or gamble on getting a perfect screen on the next try. Won't be much of an improvement if the next screen ends up having 8 pieces of dust and a couple of dead pixels.
Edit: Just got curious and took out a penlight. Found two more central pieces of dust under the screen. Best advice to new GTAB 10.1 owners - never look too closely at your screen. You might not be happy with what you find!

Yup, thats what I usually do if I have a dead pixel. Not worth aruging with the salesperson about whether its a "Significant Defect". Was just wondering what Best Buys current attitude toward these things was.
Edit: Just did the next obviously necessary thing: ran the penlight over my XOOM screen. Found extremely small pinhead size specs in a few places which seem to be parts of the screen surface with slightly greater reflectance, but nothing that appears to be dust. So, the much criticized XOOM screen seems to be dust and dead pixel free, at least in my case.
Mistery solved
I returned my Galaxy Tab to Best Buy for a replacement. I opened the new box crossing the fingers and ... the new tab was flawless! Zero dust anywhere!
Two days later I noticed two specs of dust under the screen. Hmm, I thought I did a pretty accurate inspection... I checked it very carefully again. Only two very small specs of dust: one on the right and one on the left side of the screen.
Today I check again and I can count eight specs of dust!
Is it possible they enter from outside?
I checked for possible gaps between the glass screen and the plastic case and I found a gap all around the edges of the glass screen. Not large but I can stick a sheet of paper in it.
Another possible explanation is that dust enters from the speaker grills and the connector socket. The position of the specs of dust is close to them. I think that the latter is the most probable cause.
Anyway, it is a fact that this is not dust that was trapped during the build process, this is dust that entered the tab in the 4 days that I used it. This means that the dust will keep accumulating: if I got eight specs of dust in 4 days I can imagine what I can get in a year!
This one goes back to Bets Buy too and this time for a refund.
It is really a pity, I really liked this tab!

I returned my tab to Best Buy (2nd return, first was because of lcd defect [rainbow sheen]) the second one I got was a white one that had dust under the screen. Looking over their return policy there is nothing other than the standard "we reserve the right to refuse any return/exchange" disclaimer. Those of us experiencing these issues, please do the rest of us a huge favor when returning your tablets, don't lie or misrepresent your reason for return. Be honest with the person handling the return, thereis no valid reason that they should deny it. Hopefully Best Buy will clue in with the amount of charge backs they're hopefully going to have to do in the near future.
The only thing that really pisses me off in regards to the whole situation is that none of the tabs the have left have unlocked bootloaders. It's almost insulting that the first 5 that samsung shipped for release day and none of the secondary shipments do.
Except that best buy is now requiring valid id for returns because they are tracking what people exchange for some reason. Eventually they will stop you is my guess but who knows. Just be careful.
Well along with dust under my screen...somehow a small bug got under there too.
This is very frustrating...
Sorry for the crappy quality

I have 1 speck of dust; unfortunately it is half way down the luminous battery icon so very easy to spot if you want to find it. I noticed it right away and haven't had any new pieces since then (2 weeks). Mines is the black 16gb UK one.
If it had not have been over the battery I would never have seen it and it does seem to be moving slightly so I am hopeful it will one day hit the black status bar and disappear. It depends where these things are as to whether they are annoying; personally, I get the odd speck in my eyes every now and again and you don't notice it after a week or so. The advice not to go looking for them is very good - you may well not like what you find but also it's not the end of the world if the device functions. The first scratch anywhere is the worse on any device but after that you realise it is no biggie. My ipod has a giant crack in the screen so it could be a lot worse.
I went through two 32GB at Best Buy both with horrible (5+) pieces of dust under the screen. The second one had like a piece of string or something a couple mm long under it. Third unit appears completely flawless (for now) and I am quite satisfied.

Mine does not have this but I am really beginning to think the QC coming out of ASUS really sucks.
My advice....return it and get the Samsung. My buddy just got one and it is flawless except for the limitations, i.e. no sd card, etc.
I would return mine but I bought it from Office Depot and they won't give me a refund and they don't sell the Samsung.
Lulz ya I actually had a little spot of something near the top of my screen but it wasn't really white but it did feel like maybe some sort of adhesive, but it was only in one tiny spot and it rubbed off. Yours just looks bad, that's really not right I wouldn't think I'd send it back. And ya I'm hearing good things about the Samsung build quality but I couldn't live without this dock now and the slots otherwise I'd be selling mine and getting a Samsung. Hoping the Transformer 2 is much better overall.

Doesn't the Samsung have a dock? I am like you, I wanted the sd expandability but now dealing with this poor build quality I wonder which would have been more difficult to live with.
Yes I believe it does have a dock of sorts, but not like the Transformer one where it clicks in and turns it into a tablet, and don't believe it has 2 USB ports and SD card slot or trackpad, so sounds as worthless as the ones for iPad.
I have the same kind of "glue" on the top side. Its however not over the entire length, just on 2 places. It bothered me a bit but now i have it in a case its covered and doesnt bother me.. It seems asus has a lot of production inperfection with the transformer.

I have the spacer, the glue is on the spacer...
Exchange it, someone elsewhere on this forum did a strip down of a TF and there was no glue mentioned, looks like it has been botched up after production, I would be appalled if it was at assembly level, as this unit should have not past QC and should have been binned.
It is sad to read the comments on this forum as my unit is nearly perfect, slight light bleed but no worse than my I pad one, both pad and dock are of the build standard of a quality notebook, I have had both for 5 weeks and they are getting better by the day. I believe that the TF and future ASUS tablets will outsell Samsung due to their versitility.
Hope you get it sorted, and enjoy using your TF as much as the majority of us do.

I had the same problem and i returned it.
Posted from my rooted transformer.
This isn't new. I've read about this happening to one guy in the UK and he said he went and tried to exchange but the other units had glue as well and other customers had brought them in for exchange.
Last I remember they gave him some sort of discount.
If you want to get an RMA with the retailer you brought it from, do it. Don't however, do an RMA with Asus over this. It's not worth the problems.
they have replaced it
Return it for a new one. Mine doesn't have that either and I would be upset if I received it brand new with glue along the edges.
Glad to see they have replaced it for you.
Hey all,
I am on my 3rd Iconia now.. The first one had a couple dead pixels, the second one creaked like mad and could flex way too much (I believe someone put the backing up improperly), now, this new unit the bottom edge of the glass can be pushed down about 1/16th of an inch, it feels slightly loose and a bit different from the top glass. I notice this especially in the middle of the bottom edge and to the right of the bottom edge.
Does anyone else notice that if you push near the bottom edge of the glass (opposite side of the volume rocker, I'd call the volume rocker the top) the glass bends/gives a tiny bit in the middle and the right edge?
All in all, I do not think this will cause any issues, it could even be designed that way on purpose as the speakers are behind this area in the glass.
Thoughts? I really don't feel like returning a 3rd unless it's necessary (I've set these things up 3 times now!)
I really appreciate anyone chiming in with their own Iconia's findings,

Return it. Mine does none of that. Check your new one in the store before you take it home.
UGH! Not even a little give on the bottom edge? I can't believe I may have to get a 4th unit.. how the heck can these be so different unit to unit? Seeing as the last 3 I've had had defects, I may just stick with this one as this defect is minor and unless the screen falls off, there is no effect from this defect.
I am slapping it in a case today, and I may just mentally ignore it. I like this tablet a lot more than the other Android tablets, the sound is awesome and the speed is good too.
I feel so stupid going back for a 4th lol...
Mine does not do that either, I'd say you should go back for your 4th one, man thats a bummer. Sorry to hear about your troubles sir.
Alright, it's official, I am going back for a 4th tablet... wow. For those who have no problems, can you please check the build date of your tablet? I will try to get one around the same build date. Mine was built in May 2011, I guess I should look for something more recently built.

Thanks, I wonder why these are so hit or miss! Dangit....
Solid
Mine is solid as a rock.
Not sure where to find the build date but I have none of those issues with mine. I played with the wife's and none of that on hers either. In fact she uses hers a lot more than me.

got mine in late april and it's spongy at the bottom center like you said. on the far edges, the glass is lower than the bottom aluminum piece, but in the center, it's higher. Mines been that way for a couple of months. i didn't notice it until after the 14-day return period.
Actually all the display models felt exactly like mine when pressed in the same spots, I think it is normal, so convinced I didn't bother trading in. I'm gunna need a cases anyway so its a moot point then regardless! Cheers!
Same here with mine, no movement I mean. The glass is solid as a rock all the way round the frame
Take it back, and keep going until you get a good one, they are faaaaaar too expensive to accept low build quality.
odd
Have a May 2011 build on mine according to the box - no strange issues like you are reporting.
You may qualify as the most unlucky person ever, four tabs with build quality issues is pretty damn unlucky
actually they all give in these spots I assume you guys are pushing right on the edge, if you press about half an inch above the edge you will see flex. All the display models did this too, it is a non issue to me now cheers!
under alot of light check closely
My tab has movement in the same area.if you look really closely.for me it looks as thou its the allumn that is moving not so much the display.thoui can see how it seems tto be the glass
Hope you see the same after second look.I would worry about the glass.this so called allumn tab
Is plastic with a very thin allumn skin. Yes I had One apart.
Got mine during the $100 off about 3 1/2 weeks ago.
Build date is July. No flexing on mine.
I see many people complaining about the charger having a short cord.
Mine is 5 feet. Were the older ones shorter?

Nope. That's what we all got - a cheapo extension cord fixes that "issue"
Absolutely no spongy on mine. Rock solid with no problems what so ever. Love this tablet. April 2011 build.
Mine's loose, too
I apologize for reviving this old thread but is this "sponginess" in the area near the docking connector common and tolerated? Mine does it after only three days (holding it mostly vertical). It was tight as drum when I bought it and I can see how this could be attributed to material fatigue when one holds the tab by the long thin aluminum edge. It feels like the edge is slowly giving way and bending.
