7" Kindle Fire HD vs Nexus 7 - Suggestions? - 7" Kindle Fire HD General

Reverend Kyle here...
I will be doing a full comparison video on the Amazon 7" Kindle Fire HD versus the Google Nexus 7 Tablet once mine arrives (Hopefully on the 14th). Some of you may already be familiar with my previous work with other tablets.
I am opening up the floor to you. What sort of things would you like me to compare?
Obvious ones:
-Physical appearance and dimensions
-Camera performance
-Benchmarks (Please specify which Benchmarks you prefer)
-Audio
-WIFI performance
I truly believe that this will be an interesting comparison between these two tablets. We may have an interesting battle here.
I look forward doing videos on this device as the development starts to take shape.

Pocketability - See how many types of (oversized) pockets either can fit into. At 5.4" width, the KF HD 7 doesn't look to fit into any AFAIK. That would substantially undercut its portability if it needs a bag/purse.
Netflix or Prime HD video - See how either fares with paid HD video content, and the quality. It is called the KF HD, after all.
Wifi - Signal level isn't a good indicator of performance. More effective is a simple distance (w/ obstructions) test: while streaming a HD video (preferably the same source), walk away from the router until video stream breaks up.
Location-based services, incl mapping - See if KF HD uses wifi geolocation to compensate for lack of GPS, and how well it fares. Compare Amazon's mapping service (if any) to Goog's.
App selections of Amazon vs Google's stores.

Can you confirm the performance of the Kindle Fire HD compared to Nexus 7? Gizmodo had stated in their review that the Kindle Fire HD is not as responsive as Nexus 7.
Review from Gizmodo: http://gizmodo.com/5941095/kindle-fire-hd-hands-on-pretty-impressivefor-the-price
Aside from that, form factor would be a big one. The KF HD has what seems like a big bezel.
Which screen is better would be a big one.

Understandable, there is no way any ICS devices will be as responsive as JellyBean, plus the heavily modded with the amazon interface on the KFhd. But the review made is sound so horrible. Lol. However, the reviewer did say that once you've experience JB you will never find anything lower than that satisfactory, so i think it is not that bad.

Better Nexus

Nexus 7 wins
i feel Nexus 7 wins in portability and design.

Actually I would also like to see if rooted the Kindle Fire HD would beat the Nexus 7 in terms of apps and usability outside the Amazon region, because basically the Kindle is locked inside an Amazon box.
Also people does Kindle Fire HD and Nexus 7 both have flash support?

I say leave rooting OUT of the comparison.
Flash isn't supported on the Nexus 7 BUT I got it to work on about 90% of the videos I tried. The KFHD? Time will tell I guess unless it has been already confirmed that Flash is supported and works.

For the out-of-the-box experience I can't imagine the Kindle Fire HD winning. My girlfriend has the original Kindle Fire, and basically only uses it for reading because she can't use any of her Android apps purchased for her older tablet. And keep in mind that your average person isn't going to want to deal with rooting/maintaining a rooted device (XDA users are certainly not your average Android user). The Kindle Fire HD will certainly be a step up, but it's still primarily a portal for using Amazon-purchased content. It's not truly an Android tablet (unless you root it, assuming an exploit will even be found for the HD).

Not necessarily. When I bought a Kindle Fire for my wife, I had no intention of modifying the stock software in any way. It was only out of necessity that I even found XDA in the first place, as she wanted me to look for a way to change the wallpapers. At the time, I knew nothing about Android or rooting, but without that knowledge we would be locked into Amazon's uncostomizable buggy software. Of course we could have accepted it as it was, if there were no other options...
Most people want to get the most out of their money, and the stock Amazon software is very generic as far as tablets go. It does have some great proprietary features for people looking for an e-reader and not much else, but most of the people that buy a Kindle Fire want more than that. This is why you see people in these forums of all ages and all levels of technical experience, trying to root their KFs...Amazon really hasn't given them much choice.
And just so you know, we now have three, fully modifed KFs running different ROMs and no stock software in any of them.

Fire
I just sold nexus 7 to buy 8.9 kindle fire only because my main purpose for the tablet is to watch movies. The 8.9 inch has one the best displays out now and 300 bucks. You don't want to spend three hundred dollars on a tablet I would recommend nexus 7. nexus seven is light weight and can do all the stuff kindle fire can do and then some. I owned 8 gig model I am not new to rooting and installing roms with nexus 7 toolkit the beginner could root this tab and unlock it. The 8 gig 200 dollar model and otg cable and you have much storage as you want. Hands down nexus 7 best 7 inch hd.

More concerned about build quality above anything else. My old Kingle Fire was forged from a brick it felt like, could really handle some bumps and bruises. Heard the Nexus 7 just sucks when it comes to build quality.

Nexus 7 all the way. Amazing dev support will get android updates for a while and a tegra processor, so you can get THD games.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2

I'd like to see a comparison of color quality. The Nexus 7 is a bit subpar here, greens and yellows look a bit pastel and a slight washed out look. And the Tegra 3 causes an over exposed look after playing many videos (easily fixed once rooted).

"The 7-inch, 1280 x 800 display on the Fire HD is fantastic. The IPS, LCD screen looks better than probably any other tablet display I've seen, save for the new iPad. While the pixel density is the same for both the Nexus 7 and the Fire HD (216 compared to the iPad's 264), the Fire blows away the Nexus in terms of color richness, black levels, and general brightness."

Yeah, I'm hoping the more this gets highlighted and mentioned, the more embarrassed Google should be and will hopefully apply a software update for the issue (and hopefully it's something that can be fixed with an update).

If you must have a tablet now and intend to root it, get the Nexus 7. It's a sure thing. Don't be put off by the people whining about defects; nobody posts when their tablet is working correctly.
If you can tolerate Amazon's lock-in, get the Fire HD.
If you don't need a tablet right now and do want root, then wait. Buying just released hardware expecting root and other hacks out of the gate is dumb.

for build quality, i could easily assume that the kindle fire hd would have better build quality. my nexus 7 has a few problems in the build quality. there are threads in the fourms about the nexus 7 and build quality. when the 8.9 inch one comes out i am definitely selling nexus the 7 and getting the new kindle fire.

I have ordered a Fire HD because despite the Nexus 7 specs, I have personal experience of the build quality issues. I also want decent speakers.
Compared to apple.... Lets face it a 7" HD tablet for a little more money than a new Ipod nano... what a bargain !

Nexus 7 best 7 inch tab out there gonna get fire get the 8.9. The nexus is lighter, faster, more open and i had defected nexus 7 i got replacement in a week and haven't had an issue since. Or might wanna wait check out the surface tablet it might be 200 dollars.

whats the best thing about the nexus 7?

???
The dev scene (but, of course, this is a bit of a biased answer).
Hard to pick one thing, but probably how well it fits/feels in your hand. Going from a xoom this thing feels like it WANTS to be held.
Easy question, the price.
Price to performance ratio is what makes this great
it doesnt judge me
It's size is number one for me. I wouldn't own it if it was larger. Second would be is a fully featured tablet os which means it bumps my kindle fire out of contention.
Its a Nexus.

- It's from Google, so you can expect the latest updates to JB from them
- It's Nexus, that's always good
- It's 7in form factor; fits in your hands and pocket with ease
Value with high performance
Perfect price for performance and something that is in between your phone & laptop.
Leos RC simulator works again in Jelly Bean.. lol
Oh, and its a nexus. That's pretty cool to.

The best thing about the Nexus 7 is that it leads to posts with lots of question marks.
Significantly less 'I Bricked My Tablet' posting compared to the Kindle Fire.
Via my HTC Rezound
i have mine since friday and there is a lot to like about it.. i think if you are already using somethingi like the galaxy nexus with jellybean then its great.. the extra screen size might not appear to be much but side by side the 7" screen is a lot bigger.. watching video is great on the 7.. .. my daughter has taken for watching music videos on youtube.. its quite funny.. she calls it my 'giant phone'.. she is 5.. for the price its a pretty great device... if google can roll the contents of the play store to europe then it would be quite impressive.. and be able to compete with itunes..
For me it's portability, decent screen and Jelly Bean, when you factor in cost the Nexi is a must buy if you want an easily carried and used tab.

N7 companion = Ipad3 or Asus Infinity?

I bought my wife a N7 and we really like it, now I need to get myself one. But the limited 16GB storage ain't cutting it and the wimpy little speakers from N7 is another negative. I'm aware of getting OTG usb adapter to run thumb drive with stickmount app but I don't want to deal with the hassle of having a dildo looking thing hanging down from the N7 tablet when i'm on the go. I don't care about custom rom either, have already tried several ROMs for the N7 in both development sections and none impresses me, they all have bugs, lag, and other crap, so I restored our N7 back to stock and it's butter smooth and couldn't be happier. I'm looking into ipad 3 64GB version or the Asus Infinity 64GB, the latter have SD slot but I keep hearing how the Asus have quality problem so I'm a bit reluctant to get another Asus. I know I would definitely enjoy the Retina display from ipad 3, i have seen one in person and it's all eye candy! Does anybody own both the N7 + ipad 3 or infinity? what's your thought?
I primarily use an iPad 3rd gen (32gb wifi). Just won an N7 thanks to ProClip, and and have found myself using it as my reading device with great success. I would recommend the iPad for the app selection alone.

If you're not using custom ROMs and are asking this forum whether to get an ipad or an android tablet, you're either a troll or just clueless.
In either situation, I recommend you get an iPad and find a different forum.
I have a ipad 3 32GB wifi and a nexus 7. You can't go wrong with the retina display the ipad has. Like you said, It's eye candy. I do love the N7 because of it's portability. It's small, can fit in your pocket if you have big enough pockets.. I love them both. Glad I have them both!

Glad to hear, we already have 2 Android phones running on UKB roms along with the N7 on stock JB now, but never own anything from apple so I thought why not throw in a bit of variety? when i have the itch to flash custom roms I can always do it on the Dinc2 or the N7 so I ain't missing anything. The Retina display would be the top reason to get the Ipad 3, that long with bigger storage. I'm using the NEC PA271W on my PC for photo and video editing so I'm a bit spoiled by wide gamut display, the ipad 3 is as close to sRGB as we can get at this point in time. fishfuzz also bring up a good point, app selection, but is the long charging time really that bad on the ipad 3?

At least a full night to full charge it .. especially if it's at 0.
I have both the IPad 3 and N7 and they are pretty good companions. The N7 gets used more here as it has that perfect size and we here all have Android phones. But for any critical viewing or listening we use the IPad.
If you want to spend the money go get the 64GB IPad, it's an excellent tablet and the image quality is unbeatable. The only other Android tablet would consider is the T700 and like you I have issues with trying out another Asus tablet.
Well this is a nexus forum lol... But what are u looking for in a tablet? As much as I hate apple, I will agree that they do make a quality product that is very user friendly that and they have a nice selection of apps. Memory is always important and the n7 Deff lacks memory but I have a usb otg. Also keep in mind that the ipad mini will be available soon so if size is a factor than u will have 2 options available.

I've had a tf101 and a tf201 and no issues regarding build quality. What really annoys me about Asus tablets, and the reason I won't buy another, is that you need to unlock the bootloader to root and once is unlocked you can't ever receive over the air updates again.
If Asus won't allow me to make my tablet resellable again after rooting, I'm looking elsewhere.
I did consider a galaxy note 10.1 but the display resolution is a bit low for a 10" tab. It looks ok just text in particular just isn't that sharp.

I have iPad3 and nexus 7. I had the tf101. The prior comments on iPad3 are true, but no one mentions the relatively sloowwwwww CPU. At the speed the market is moving, I would wait for something that has nexus 7 relative speed, iPad3 relative screen + GPU, thin and light.
The nexus 7 is nicely balanced on CPU, GPU, pixel density, screen vibrancy, energy use, responsiveness, etc. The crop of tablets next year should be able to do this, in a larger screen. I would wait.

[Q] Note 8 or Nexus 10

So I'm trying to decide between purchasing a note 8 or a Nexus 10. I'm coming from a Kindle Fire 8.9 rooted with cm10.1 installed on it. That said, I've had TONS of tablets. Original galaxy tab 7, hp touchpad, galaxy tab 10.1, nexus 7, original transformer, xoom 2, xoom 1, and the transformer pad. I'm a tech junkie(as a profession) so I know my stuff. The problem I'm facing between the two is that I love the 8" screen, the quad core processor, sd expandability, and the ability to use hspa+. However the nexus 10 offers much more developer support, had that amazing high res screen, really good speakers, and stock android. Ish if anybody has had both and has preferences...or any arguments either way? If so it would be a HUGE help. THANKS!
Additionally I would make use of the spen because I do a lot of note taking on my tablet. But currently I just type everything out. That said, the Motorola xoom 2 uses a pointed stylus I believe the nexus could use if I wanted to.
Do you have a link to that stylus?
It all comes down to pen or no pen, is what it is. Do you want to draw and/or handwrite on it? If so, go for Note. If not, then keep what you have.

I was looking at the Note 8, especially because of that 3G radio, but that WXGA 189 ppi screen resolution killed it for me. Let me explain. I picked up a Zenbook Prime ultrabook with a 1080p 165 ppi screen last summer and was blown away by how great it looked, particularly with the matte screen. Then I got my first tablet, a Nexus 10, in January and its screen soon made me look down on the Zenbook's screen by comparison, that's how great the WQXGA 300 ppi screen is. :highfive: Once you step up to retina-level ppi, it's tough to go back.
That said, you've pretty much summed up the strengths of each tablet. It really depends on how mobile you need your tablet to be and how much you'd use the stylus, I only use my Nexus 10 around the house so it works better for me. That beautiful screen is also its weakness, as it sucks power like crazy. I always keep it on the low end of the brightness scale (lowest brightness setting allowed, which is still surprisingly bright, in a dark room, maybe 35% setting during the day) and the screen still consistently eats 60-70% of the power for me, according to the battery stats. It goes about 6-6.5 hours of continuous use on a single charge, best case (holds charge fantastic, kept using it sporadically for almost two weeks on a single charge one time).
I estimate that the Exynos 5 Dual in the Nexus 10 pulls about 5 W on average, up to 9-10 W max, which is a lot, even with a 33.75 Wh battery. I'd check the Note 8's reviews to see if it does any better, here's one you could read. The Nexus 10 can get pretty hot up top where the logic board is, though not as bad as some of the hottest devices, and you're not going to hold it up there anyway. I was surprised at how heavy 603 grams felt in my hands, I suggest you try holding one before you decide. At 338 grams, the Note 8 is almost half the weight.
The front-facing speakers are good on the Nexus 10, but the maximum volume is not as high as I'd like. You never know how high the volume is going to be on various videos and not being able to compensate by turning the volume up enough can be annoying. The camera may be the weakest link, just mediocre. I'd expect the Note 8 to have a better one on the back, though the front camera on the Nexus 10 has 50% more megapixels.
If I were you, I'd wait for the next Nexus 7, which is supposed to launch with a Full HD screen in a month or so. If you really need a good stylus, the Note 8 has a Wacom digitizer built in, so it can't be beat. If you want the gorgeous screen and don't mind the stuff I pointed out, Nexus 10. For all the flaws I've listed in the Nexus 10, I'm very happy with it, only big complaint is with Android web browsers generally, but that's a whole different Android software issue.
The other thing...is that I can get the nexus 10 for $260 (16gb model...used of course but in new condition), and the note 8 for $300. Makes it a bit of a tougher choice seeing as how I can get either relatively inexpensive lol. I'd wait for the next Nexus 7 but I had it right before I got my Kindle fire 8.9" and 7" just doesn't do it for me. Thing is...idk if that 8" will do it for me either(that sounds iffy LOL!) thats why I don't want the next Nexus 7

Have you considered the Galaxy Note 10? It's pretty much the same thing, just stretched out to 10" with a battery that holds 50% more juice. Other specs might be slightly worse since it's older, for example, the same CPU but at a lower frequency, but it has a 3G radio and the stylus/digitizer that you wanted. I suggest you go to a store and handle these tablets before deciding, if you're not sure if 7-8" will do it for you.

2013 Kindle Fire HDX 8.9 will have 1600p screen, SD800, $379

http://reviews.cnet.com/tablets/amazon-kindle-fire-hdx/4505-3126_7-35828167.html
It looks like Amazon has thrown down the gauntlet for this holiday season.
With the advent of this news, how do you think Google/Asus is going to respond with the new Nexus 10?
The one big advantage that the Nexus 10 had over its competition was its 2560x1600 screen. Now that the competition has caught up, the Nexus 10 is going to need another selling point to stay on top.
Is it possible the only way to stay competitive would be to release a Nexus 10 for $350?
And there's no way the new Nexus 10 won't be releasing without a Snapdragon 800 or a Tegra 4. Maybe Asus can stay on top if they offer 3 GB of RAM?
Don't forget that the Nexus 10 also has the whole "it's not a Kindle" thing going for it, too. I'm sure they're out there but I haven't used a tablet yet that feels as fast as my N10, so an S800 or Tegra4 device would have to blow my socks off to convince me to upgrade.
kindle hdx 7" 1920x1200, snapdragon 800, 2gb ram for $229, the same price as nexus 7 v2 but much better cpu and gpu, no rear camera though. If someone could make a cyanogenmod rom for that it would be a beast!

Haha yeah, the Nexus 7v2 had a short run as the best small 7 inch tablet, but now the Kindle Fire HDX 7 is a better deal with the SD 800. Same PPI, and maybe better speakers, although I've never heard the Kindle Fire HD's speakers in person so I can't judge.
Flashing Jelly Bean onto Kindle Fires has never been difficult. The HDX 7 and HDX 8.9 are on my fantasy shopping lists if Google doesn't come out with a compelling Nexus 10.
There is always the uncertainty about the bootloader of the new Kindle. If it is easily unlocked, I see no reason not to get the new Kindles, but if the bootloader cannot be unlocked, who wants to be stuck with the Amazon OS.
If you don't mind spending money on your apps all over again.
Fire OS is designed to be completely Amazon inclusive. Their store and services only.
We'll have to see what ROM's become available. Needless to say, no direct Google releases for these ones.
Still compelling though

If Google doesn't come out with a new Nexus 10, then there is no reason for anybody to buy the Nexus 10 until it's refreshed, because the competition will be better. The Kindle Fire 8.9 has the same resolution, a Snapdragon 800, and it's only $379. No smart person would buy a Nexus 10 over it.

This!
The HDX 8.9 would be perfect without ther Fire OS.
However, would be nice if both Amazon and Google added sd card slots.
The new kindle HDX from my search proves it's indeed a beast but I just don't like the idea of Amazon taking out the rear camera from the 7inch model. That is too bad for me. I like taking pictures of anything anytime.
Screw Amazon and their bastardization of Android. Its a huge pita getting rid of the bloat on the older Fire HD I bought my wife. Never again.
I'm really concern about power button, it looks quite inconvenient.

[Q] What's my next tablet?

I am posting in here because this is the tablet I currently have. Loved it accept the screen colors rather sucked. But it is getting a bit old and I am tired of how heavy it is.
Besides it will continue its life with another family member,
So I am looking at above 8 inch but still on a budget (Under $300?). Would like a hd screen as this screen is getting a bit rough to look at next to my galaxy note 3.
I may just end up getting a nexus 7. The reviews say that's the one to get and I do not like the ugly design of the Nexus 10. Really like the look of the Kindle HDX. However no play store and a locked down device means not tinkering .
Anyways what do you guys suggest? Any experience with and 8 inch tab or help convince me about the Nexus 7.
PS: I am on a Verizon account so lte may be a bonus.
Any thoughts are welcome. Thanks.
A500 replacement
I have the nexus 7 and quite like it. You might also consider either the Nook HD+ or Kindle HDX. N2A (nook to android) has boot roms for both devices that unlock them and boot a current version of Android. The current version is 4.4 Worth looking at, especially with the low prices on the Nook HD+ with B&N rethinking its tablet offerings.
I've used the N2A on one the earlier Nook color and had no problems with it.

Thanks.

Ok. After a lot of consideration I ended up getting a Asus Transformer TF701. You can not beat it at $299! Great screen, runs a fairly bloat free vanilla version of Android.
Really like this tablet. Almost a shame it does not get the attention it deserves.
I think Asus would do better with it if they advertise. Plus I can get the keyboard docks later.
Thanks for the suggestions though.
