How to flash a kernel via flashtool - XPERIA X8 General

I created this post to show to amateurs how to flash a kernel.
How to:
STEPS
1)Move the kernel(boot.img) to Flashtool/firmwares
2)Open flashtool
3)Press the Thunder button.
4)Choose "Fastboot Mode"(A new window will popup. Its called "Fastboot Toolbox")
5)Turn off your device
6)Now connect your device to fastboot by pressing the button right to menu button.(The led must turn to blue)
7)On Fastboot Toolbox click on "Select kernel to Flash".
8)Wait to complete and you are READY

Did you, by any chance, mistake the sub-forum?
EDIT: Seriously, take a look at the forums before you post nonsense.

When i was reading the title i thought it will say "CWM Recovery"...
I think thi is useless

He's talking about boot.img and fastboot. We don't have those. Look at the link in my post. He made the same thread in 4-5 forums.

[GUIDE] [NS4G] Simple Root/Unroot

This guide is the easiest way to root and unroot your nexus s 4g. If you follow the instructions well you should be fine, included is odin and the files needed if something goes wrong, but it shouldn't as my 11 year old sister could follow them correctly. READ ENTIRE POST BEFORE ASKING QUESTIONS PLEASE.
If your pc doesn't recognize your phone in fastboot make sure your sdk is up to date including thirdparty installs, and download pdanet trial version and those drivers will work. get drivers here http://hotfile.com/dl/92897696/7ae5290/drivers.rar.html
or if your not comfortable installing drivers download pdanet here and install as it will automatically install drivers for you
http://www.junefabrics.com/android/download.php
ROOTING..................
Ok download the files attached and extract them. For the first part for rooting you will need the:
superuser.zip
recovery3101.img
-Ok put the superuser.zip on the sdcard of your phone.
-Power off phone, when off hold volume up and power button to get to bootloader.
-Go the the tools folder of your android sdk and open command prompt and enter the following command: (easiest way is to hold shift and right click on tools folder and hit the button that says "open command window here" then type these command...
fastboot devices (make sure your device shows up, if not your drivers aren't installed)
fastboot oem unlock
-this will unlock the bootloader and you should follow the prompt and accept (volume up, then power button)
-Some have reported unlocking the bootloader erases sdcard..if so when you reboot after unlocking make sure to put superuser.zip back on sdcard.
-this should reboot your phone, now power off, when off hold volume up and then power button to get back to bootloader.
-place the recovery3101.img in the tools folder and type the following command
fastboot flash recovery recovery3101.img
-You should see it say flash ok in the command prompt, now scroll down (on phone) to recovery and hit the power button (ok button)
-Go to flash zip from sdcard and select the superuser.zip and let it flash.
-when done reboot phone, sign into google accnt, download rom manager, open up rom manager go down to All clockworkmod recoverys and flash 3.1.0 (the newest recovery doesn't work for me as my phone can't get into recovery that is why we are flashing the other one )
-All set you can flash other roms, MAKE SURE TO CREATE BACKUP OF YOUR CURRENT STOCK ROOTED ROM FIRST.
UNROOTING.........
Get files http://www.4shared.com/file/N5g8Hav_/root.html?]
-download and extract files, we will be using odin, the 3 tar files.
-extract tar files to desktop along with odin.
-run odin and in the files section select the boxes bootloader, pda, phone.
-click the buttons next to each and direct it to the .tar files we extracted to desktop, so....
click the bootloader box, direct it to sph-d720-bootloader.tar ...then..
click the pda button direct it toward the sph-d720-pda.tar....then..
click the phone button and direct it toward sph-d720-phone.tar....
-now turn off your phone, when off hold volume up and volume down buttons simultaneously, then quickly press the power button....a huge yellow triangle will pop up and say "downloading'.......
plug your phone via usb to computer....odin should automatically see it.....click the start button in odin and let it do its thing and bam...all set.
If you want stock recovery too place the recovery.img in tools folder, open command prompt..type the following command..
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
Done.
Ill give this a try when I get home....but I'm sure you need to make sure you have all the correct drivers installed...or when you run the fast boo command it won't recognize your phone is connected.
Subbed for when I have time.
Since the NS4G doesn't have a SD Card where do you put the superuser zip?
This will work for the 3g version, correct?
Sent from my Nexus S using Tapatalk
yes it should work for 3g

I can't seem to get this to work. I have Win7 64 and I used PDAnet to install the drivers but when I get to the part where I have to type "fastboot oem unlock" the command prompt just says < waiting for device > and there is nothing on the Nexus S 4g other than the normal fastboot options for me to select.

Make sure you installed the right drivers....reboot computer, make sure you opened the command prompt in the tools folder as that is where the fastboot commands are located....also it will automatically reboot in the "unlock bootloader menu" you don't select anything...until that menu comes up..make sure your sdk is updated as well..even third party installs..
I want to thank you, these are great instructions so far. I have been trying for days, got my phone unlocked by a mistake, had to Odin back (came from Epic so know and love that system), but it stayed unlocked.
I cannot get it rooted. Used your instructions and get to second part - cannot install fasboot recovery.
My files are in tools listed as recovery-clockwork-3.1.0.1-crespo4g. I ran fastboot, came up with a large square of instructions, not ok, with command and option. So I tried again. nothing
Then went to phone with it connected, tried to select from card the su file. It goes to yellow triangle and finally get back to a reboot.
I am so close, can you help with what I am doing wrong? It is not rooted and cannot get it to do anything.

WANTED: Sticky guide for newbies

Hi all
I have several years experience from rooting and applying all kinds of ROM's om both Symbians, Motorola OS, Android and WM devices but I am completely stuck when trying to "fix" the problem with non-existing SD card support on the Xoom.
What I have been looking for is a guide that walks you through Unlocking, Rooting, adding CWM and finally replaces the kernel with a "better" one. I have of course found all kind of guides on any of the topics above, but all of them assumes that you already have performed one or another of these steps.
So if anyone could be an angel and summarize the steps (links are ok) with the assumption that the reader (I) have
- oem locked
- no cwm installed
- unrooted
- Wifi only
- updated 3.1 honeycomb device.
I will certainly cry of joy if someone can do this for the good of the community. I am sure that many like I have already tried both this and that, and bricked or soft-bricked (I did) their devices while trying to get the god damned sd card to become functional . My own device has now been resurrected from coma (RSD Mode 2) and is now alive again, thanks to "fastboot oem unlock" but I can not for my life get the CWM to work. I have installed the recovery-Tiamat-R4c-100611-1150-cwm.img with fastboot. No errors reported either on the tablet och in Windows during flashing. But when pressing VolUp during boot, I just get stuck in "Starting RSD protocol support 3". I can boot normally if I dont press any button. Fastboot mode works too.
Below is a slightly modified of Land Master's NOOB guide. I have only updated a couple of links. I followed this guide when I originally rooted my Xoom, and it worked perfectly. But note that I have not tested this with the updates. All credit for this goes to Land Master!
USE THIS, AND ASSUME ALL RISKS. IT HAS NOT BEEN TESTED WITH THE UPDATED LINKS!
WIFI ONLY! WIFI ONLY! WIFI ONLY!
If you use this guide, or any other guide for that matter, make sure that you read it, reread it, (10 times!) and fully understand every step. One hour now, spent studying this, will save you 10 hours of headaches later. Make sure you follow every step EXACTLY!
"This tutorial was written for the NooB’s among us (like me) that are new to this stuff and are having a hard time “piecing together” all of the steps. While I am actually a not quite a beginner, NONE of these steps/methods/files have been developed by me. I have simply compiled the procedure in a document that I hope will be useful. With this in mind all the credit belongs to the many individuals that contribute in the XDA Developers forum. I have reviewed many posts by many people and have used all of the information along the way.
A)*Installing ADB
ADB stands for Android Debug Bridge and simplistically stated will be used to send commands to your XOOM using the keyboard on your PC. In essence your PC will be acting like a terminal. ADB is included in a package known as the Android SDK. The following steps should be taken to insure a successful install of the SDK, therefore giving you access to ADB.
1.*Install Java JDK :*http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/ja...ad-346242.html
a.*Download appropriate Java SE Development Kit (JDK) from link above
b.*Double click to Install JDK
c.*Accept Setup Defaults
2.*Install SDK Starter Package:*http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html
a.*Download SDK Starter Package from link above. There are versions available for Microsoft Windows, Linux and Mac OS X. In case of Windows, both an installer and a zip file are available but there isn’t any need to use the installer as a formal installation is not required. Download the ZIP file.
b.*Once you have downloaded the SDK, simply extract the compressed file to a location on your computer. In our case, we have extracted it to the root of our C drive and that makes*C:\android-sdk-windows*the installation location of the SDK. From here onwards, we shall be referring to this location as the ‘SDK folder’.
3.*Download the SDK Platform Tools using the SDK Mamager.
a.*Browse to the SDK folder and launch SDK Manager.
b.*When launching it for the first time, it will present you with a window to choose packages to install. The first option begins with ‘Android SDK Platform-tools’. Make sure it is checked, and uncheck all the other packages for now. You can check/uncheck a package by simply double clicking on the package. Again, the only package you want to install is the Android SDK Platform-Tools.
c.*Once the process is done, you will have a ‘platform-tools’ folder inside your SDK folder. That folder will include ADB and all its dependencies.
d.*Make a copy of the File “fastboot.exe” which is in the “tools” directory and place it in the “platform-tools” directory.
B)*Install XOOM USB Driver
Just to be sure your XOOM is recognized by your PC it is recommended that you install the latest USB drivers for your system.
1.*Install MotoHelper :*http://www.motorola.com/Support/US-E...arging-Drivers
a.*Download the Driver with MotoHelper from the Link above
b.*Double Click downloaded file and follow on-screen instructions to install.
C)*Unlock Bootloader
Unlocking the bootloader gives you full control over the device so you can flash new Recovery’s, kernels, ROM’s, ETC.*THIS STEP*WILL DELETE ALL DATA AND SETTINGS ON YOUR XOOM.
1.*Put XOOM in Debug mode
a.*On the device, go to home screen, press*Apps*> >Settings>>Applications>>Development, and enable*USB Debugging.
b.*Now connect your XOOM to the PC via USB. New hardware installation should begin and it will start looking for and installing the drivers.
c.*A prompt should appear that states the drivers were installed successfully. On my PC the AutoPlay Device Options also appeared. I clicked “Open Device to View Files” and saw the device Storage with 27.8 GB free of 28.7 GB.
2.*Execute ADB Commands
a.*Open a command prompt by navigating to the ‘SDK Folder’, Holding the shift key, right clicking on the “platform-tools” folder and selecting “Open Command Window Here” from the popup menu.
b.*In the new command window type:*adb reboot bootloader*and press enter.
c.*Wait for the Dual Core screen with “Starting Fastboot protocol support” in the upper left corner to appear and then type:*fastboot oem unlock*in the command window and press enter. You should see: “To continue, follow instructions on the device’s display…”.*
d.*Read the WARNING on you XOOM and either Continue Below or Cancel following the on-screen instructions.
e.*If you decided to continue then on the XOOM Push Volume Down Button to change the selection from “Cancel” to “I accept” and then press the Volume Up to select that choice.
f.*You will be questioned again so Push Volume Down then Volume Up to confirm you want to UNLOCK your device. You will see “Device Unlock operation in progress…” “Formatting UDA”
g.*When the operation completes the device will read”Device unlock operation done – rebooting…” and the device will reboot. The windows new hardware “gong” will sound a couple of times during this procedure. After this step when my XOOM rebooted I also saw an “MTP Device” driver Install dialog box on my PC. Unplug the device, and quickly perform the initial set-up. You can “Skip” any steps that will allow you to (like WiFi setup). Just get back to the home screen and continue below:
h.*Verify that USB debugging is still enabled and if not re-enable it as outlined above.
i.*Re-connect your XOOM to the PC and close any AutoPlay dialog.
D)*Install Custom Recovery
A custom recovery allows you to flash files created by community developers such as ROM’s, Radios, Kernels, Themes, ETC. It also allows you to perform special tasks such as system backup’s, partitioning, cache wiping, ETC. As of 6/19/2011 the generally accepted custom recovery for the XOOM is ClockworkMod Recovery v3.2.2.0
a.*Download Clockwork Mod recovery image (not .zip file) from here:http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1074979*
CAUTION: Do not install CWM 4.0.0.X from ROM manager!
b.*Place the File “recovery.img” that you just downloaded in the “platform-tools” directory
c.*In the previously open command window (if you closed it then re-open as described above) type:*adb reboot bootloader*and press enter.
d.*The device will reboot into bootloader mode (as described above) and when this completes type:*fastboot flash recovery recovery.img (name must match name of file)
e.*Check the screen of your XOOM and see: “Flashing StorMgr partition recovery STATUS: - done!*
f.*Type:*fastboot reboot*in the command window and press enter.
g.*Wait 3 second after the Moto logo is seen, then pushed Vol Down
h.* Android recovery menu visible, press Vol Up. Go straight into CWM.
i.*Navigate in ClockworkMod Recovery by using the volume up/down to “move” and the power button to “select”. Look for reboot system, highlight it and hit the power button. Your zoom will reboot normally.
OPTIONAL STEPS
l.*At some time later (AFTER YOU ARE ROOTED) to avoid the need to execute ADB commands to enter recovery, I suggest you look for a free application called “Quick Boot”, by Sirius Applications from the market.*
m.*Once Quick Boot is installed run it and simply select “Recovery” to boot into ClockworkMod.*
Next Step: Following Public Animal's guide to rooting >*http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1075260*
Last step (optional) install Tiamat 1.0 ROM >*http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1117004
Thanks a lot! I am with you all the way to step H (adb reboot recovery). This step ends with the Android, yellow triangle and an exclamation mark. Nothing more. So something must be wrong with the recovery image.
In both your links and other links to the recovery image, the name "recovery-solarnz-XXXXXX-XXXX.img" is used. But the links always leads to the image "recovery-Tiamat-R4c-100611-1150-cwm.img" instead. Could this be the problem? If so, what should the XXXXX be replaced with (for googling).
Thanks again for the guide. Sooner or later I *will* succeed!
Edit: Could this post be something that explains why my CWM flashing does not succeed? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=13747198&postcount=18
And since the device still not is rooted, I can not rm the suggested files ... gaaah

The name of the file is "recovery-Tiamat-R4c-100611-1150-cwm". So you should type:*fastboot flash recovery recovery-Tiamat-R4c-100611-1150-cwm.img
It actually worked! What I did was this
1. adb reboot bootloader
2. flashed the same recovery image that I mentioned earlier
3. fastboot reboot
4. applied the 3 second wait once the Moto logo was seen, then pushed Vol Down
5. Android recovery menu visible, press Vol Up. Now I got straight into CWM !!!
6. (prepared the sd card on my SGS with the zip files)
7. Choosed Install zip from sd card and flashed the wifi-root image
8. Reboot the tablet and verified with RomManager that I now had root

This is an amazing guide! cam30era you and LandMaster are the bomb!
May suggest one thing? When reading it through, I think a real noob might be confused with the asterisks that are on either side of many of the adb commands.
Anyway this should definitely be a sticky!
actually I sat down and wrote my own guide, starting from scratch and ensuring that every assumption and requirement was explained. I called it "idiots guide to ..." . Maybe it would be a good idea to consolidate the best from both guides into a -definitive guide-. What do you think?
Oh, the thread is in the Android development forum. Mod is welcome to move it if so needed

CWM won't boot.
For the life of me I can't understand what I'm doing wrong. US Wifi Xoom with 3.1, bootloader is unlocked, but not rooted. I use fastboot to flash the latest recovery img, 3.2.0 I beleive. Says it's successful, but like many on here when I either use "adb reboot bootloader" or if I time it and press volume down to get into the recovery, I only get a picture of the robot with the triangle. I can press volume up+power and I get the stock recovery.
I've read every post I can read but most people who have resolved the same issue were just not flashing the correct image. Which I'm sure I'm doing correctly.
Amy help would be appreciated.

how to install:
Windows:
unzip recovery-en-goapk.zip to D:\ ## Unzip the file to wherever you want D:\ just makes it easy because there is no folders.
open a CMD in windows. ## And navigate to your fastboot directory. For example mine is on D:\Atrix\tools\
fastboot flash recovery D:\recovery-en-goapk.img ## Once you are in the fastboot directory type fastboot flash recovery D:\recovery-en-goapk.img or let says you unzipped it to C:\users\downloads. Then you would try fastboot flash recovery C:\users\downloads\recovery-en-goapk.img
I would say if you can't figure out the instructions you are better off leaving it be. Instructions were as clear as glass.

Can someone please point me in the right direction? Cant I just flash that zip file that CWM is in through the charging/ recovery way? (old way) :O

Firstly get the correct CWM recovery from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1138541
Then ensure that your phone still shows "unlocked" when you boot up. If it does not install the "pudding" sbf through RSD Lite again.
Ensure you have fastboot for your OS , or better still have the android SDK installed (fastboot is in the "TOOLS" folder I believe).
Extract the recovery to the root of your OS. Usually C: and as it has a long drawn out name rename it recovery.img (must have the .img extension)
Plug your phone in via the USB cable and put it into fastboot mode by holding down the volume botton while powering on the phone. When you see "fastboot" appear at the top of the screen release the volume down mutton and press volume up once. You should see "starting fasboot protocol support".
Then using a command prompt get into the folder that you put fastboot in.
If it is in the root of your C: then type cd c:\fastboot
Then simply issue the command that goes with where you put the recovery image. Assuming you renamed it recovery.img and left it in the root drive that is C: then the command will look like this.
fastboot flash recovery c:\recovery.img
Then issue the command fastboot reboot
Hope that helps.
1. Drop the recovery .img in the same folder fastboot is in
2. Shift+right click in folder > "Open command window here"
3. Type in fastboot flash recovery recovery-en-whateveritscalled.img then fastboot reboot when its done
4. ???
5. PROFIT!!
EDIT: Oh, and of course you must be in Fastboot mode for this to work

[Guide] How to root and use custom kernel

So as I saw, there are a lot of users who's afraid of rooting their device, so I decided to make a thread where I write everything down step by step.
I'm not a man of words, so I try to keep it very minimalistic and simple, so newbies can do this too without any issue.
In this thread I'll guide your through on how to flash twrp, root, and use a custom kernel, which is called Hex and can be found here on XDA.
You need to be on September patch, otherwise I cannot guarantee that it will work.
Before we start the process, I need to say that if you brick your device because of something went wrong, don't point your finger at me, I just wrote this to help users who wants to enjoy a better experience on A2.
And one more thing. Bootloader unlocking will wipe every data on your phone so make sure to backup everything!
Let's start then, shall we?
1. Installing drivers & Preparing PC
- Download this and extract it
- Open and install "adb-setup-1.4.3.exe"
- When it is done, go to "Drivers" folder and start "miflash_unlock.exe"
- Click on the gear icon top right corner and click on "Check" next to "Click the button to install the drive"
- Do as the installer says
- Hopefully the drivers has been installed so we're done with it, let's head on the next step.
2. Preparing phone for unlocking
- On your phone navigate to Settings->System->About phone and tap the build number until you see "You are developer"
- Go back once and you'll see a new menu called "Developer options"
- Tap on it and search an option called "OEM Unlocking", enable it
- We're done here. Let's keep going
3. Entering fastboot and unlocking bootloader (MAKE A BACKUP of your data!)
- Hold your power button down, tap on restart and hold your volume DOWN button while it resets until you see the Mi bunny doing its thing
- Now we're in Fastboot mode, hooray:victory:
- Download this zip and extract it on your PC
- Open it and type "cmd" (without the quotations) in the file manager header where you see (This computer>somethingsomething>Mi A2 fastboot), don't be afraid just type it in, and hit enter and you'll enter into command prompt
- Now we are ready for action
- Type these commands one by one:
fastboot flashing unlock
fastboot flashing unlock_critical
After this, you will see a warning message that your bootloader is unlocked and your data is not safe, blah blah... Just ignore it everytime you power on your phone.
- Hope you can keep up with me cause we're done here, let's head to the next step.
4. Installing TWRP and Magisk (and Hex kernel which is optional)
- First we need to know what is our active slot, we can check this in fastboot with "fastboot getvar current-slot"
- Download this recovery by TingyChen and also copy this to the same location
- If you have slot A as active then flash twrp to B partition and vice versa In cmd type "fastboot flash boot_a or boot_b TWRP-3.2.3-jasmine-20180804.img" (Without quotation) - Now we have twrp on our device
- Then type: "fastboot set_active A (or) B " (Also without quotation) - Depending on where you installed TWRP
- Hold down the power button and Volume UP!(This time up) and when the phone resets release the power button and keep pressing the vol up button until you enter twrp
- If you did right, you're in TWRP now, let's start flashing
- Navigate to Reboot and select Slot A (or B) at the bottom - Select the active slot where your system is
- Flash Custom Kernel (we have Hex for now)
- Flash Magisk_a if you have system on A partition or Magisk_b if you have it on B
Reboot your device and we're done with everything. Now you have fully functional Magisk and Hex custom kernel.
Now you can enable CameraAPI2 with magisk module and use google camera and some other sweet things like substraum for example.
Is Twrp permanently or temporary?

It is permanent, but if you want to use twrp unfortunately you need pc for it to set the active slot to B (fastboot set_active b), because your system is on A and you boot on that slot by default. You cannot change the active slot on phone at the moment.

it says that the file is not found, try to rename it and flash it like that with your preferred file name
Anyone managed to do it this way?
I had a lot of trouble. Mainly because fastboot won't support the "set_active" command. The second thing is, that not everybody is running on slot A, so the guide might be misleading.
So after I figured the basics (I'm not used to the A/B partitions) I had a bootloop if I installed magisk via recovery.
What I did (I'm on slot B):
- everything till step 4. ofc
- installed magisk (just the apk)
- flash recovery to slot B (the active one) and then "fastboot reboot" holding vol up, to enter recovery
- in recovery I flashed the hex kernel_b and wiped cache, reboot to system
- after completed boot, reboot to fastboot (again) and boot the patched stock boot file
- then tun magisk.apk and "direct install" magisk. after reboot, you have hex kernel and magisk (but no twrp)
if you re able to select active partitions in fastboot, you can have it all
Good evening,
@pecholino I have the same problem like you with the command "fastboot set_active b" but you are on Slot B. Please tell me how do you change the Slot from A to B. I´m still on A. Thank´s in advanced.
servus
It really doesn't matter if you are on A or B. If you're on A, you follow the guide. If you're on B, you still follow the guide, but using the opposite partition.
I ended up on slot B because I flashed the august release stock image (default on slot A) and then I updated via updater to the last release (slot B). So I have the old rom on slot A and the new one on slot B. The only way I'm able to change active slots is in twrp.
I understand. Instead off "fastboot flash boot_b TWRP-3.2.3-jasmine-20180804.img" i must write "fastboot flash boot_a TWRP-3.2.3-jasmine-20180804.img", after reboot to recovery i change to B and install magisk. Is this the right way???
