Hi,
I received my Nexus 7 replacement an hour ago. It is sadly a C70K, was expecting a C80K. My brand new device has the screen lift issue.
If I place my Nexus 7 in front of my eyes and look after the screen (from right to left), I can't see the grey corner, but I can from the left to right. Well the right side of my Nexus 7 is lifted a little. What should I do :S Ask again a replacement? Just saying, i'm not opening my device to fix it.
Wow seriously? Is it affecting your usability? Leave it man. Suck it up.

Unsure if I should leave it. I got it an hour ago, who knows if in 2 weeks it will be worse. Imagine if my screen break, it is not covered by warranty. :S

I think you have 15 days to take it back to Walmart. I got my c80 from them and it was perfect.

Thanks ill look at it a little closer.. becuase it seems very miniscule and im not too picky about things but if this is something that will cause issues later on.. i want to squash it now. Sucks becuase i already rooted it and custom ROM'd it up its all geared up for use..

Yeah i'm scared that it gets worse :'( Can I ask google for a replacement while they didn't receive my previous one? I mean, this one is a replacement and my old device is still in front of me.
I would try to fix it myself if it wouldn't void the warranty but it is not the case.

It's an "O" after the month number, NOT a zero
If u pass ur nail over the glass to the edge. Do you feel the edge? Or ur nail fall down.
Visually u can see less than 0.05mm un precision which is in my point of view too picky. This is how we adjust mechanic with simple visual technics. Using high precision tool
I can see mine is not adjusted to0.05mm but it s impossible to have a prefect glass totally flat on a series.
On a 1 to 5 cm Edge you can be more picky, but precision become less precise on bigger distance due to temperature dilatation, mounting technic...
My glass has maybe 0.1mm to 0.2mm difference on right top left side and middle right side. Top and bottom are leveled that visually I can not see anything.
This is plastic and glass for Pete sake....

The screen lift is still there, you just don't see it well. If you open the cover you will that Asus "fixed" the lift by removing 2 screws, that's not a fix. The lift still shows but is very unnoticeable. I'm trying to get a new set of flat screws and fix it myself the proper way, The Philips screws are too long and ****up everything by pushing the bezel into wrong direction. Here how mines looks:
Right side, proper with the bezel sticking out nice:

I just got mine a few hours ago, wasn't home when it arrived. I had a C60K but now its C70K returned it for screen lift, flicking screen and headphone jack being defected. Two of my problems were fixed but the one that wasn't was the screen lift. I open up the back and see that three, not two but three of the screws missing. GG. what the heck is Asus doing?! I will be sending this back..
Edited: So I just put back in the back and the screen isn't lifted anymore..also the sponge feeling of it when I press down which caused the ripples on screen is gone. Did I just fix it by taking off the cover and putting it back on haha.
I was freaked out the first time I opened mine. Once you do you find that it is no different then most battery doors on phones. Its not made to be unopenable. It just pops off. If they made a little indent like on my Galaxy Nexus, it would be easier to pop open a corner at first. A credit card won't work because the edge is flat. You need a guitar pick or a plastic spoon.
I used the washer trick and this is the real fix. You basically grab a medicine pack with the push out plastic/foil. Poke a hole with a safety pin then cut a circle around it. It needs to be very small. Bam washer.
I used 2 where its really bad (shown in the picture above) and one on the screw below it. It pulls the screen in tight.
Mine looked worse then picture above and looks like the image of the right side after.
All you do is take out the screw, pop the plastic washer over the screw, and put it back. Took literally like 3 minutes. Just make 3 washers, pop the back, zip, zip, done.

So I found a used Nexus one on craigslist for a great deal and everything works perfectly fine. The previous owner had his email engraved on the phone, but that is not an issue. The screen also has some minor scratches, but none are visible when using it. However, there is one annoying problem. A speck of dust on the bottom left of the phone. I don't know how it possibly could have gotten there.
That is the most annoying part about it. One, white, speck. Should I ask him to take it back, or am I being too picky? Does your N1 have a speck of dust?
Finally, I am worried about how this will affect resale value. I know they are currently going for $200+, but with a speck of dust and an engraved email, I don't know how much it'll be worth.
Should I get a case for the phone?
Thanks.
if that's the only thing, I'd say keep it. The sealing around that area is a problem on (all? most?) N1s. I have quite a lot of dust near that corner (and I've been very careful), if you read around you'll see it's fairly common.
It's even remarkable that it's only one speck of dust enjoy your N1!
I don't have any dust under my screen, but I remember that being a common complaint here during the first few months they were available.
If you want to risk the getting more particles in there you could take it apart using the ifixit guide and hope for the best.

Yep, as far as I can tell, the spec of dust, one minor scratch on the back, and the email engraving are the only problems. I really hope that dust particle doesn't multiply.
Does anyone think I should get a case for my new N1, or should I wear it "naked." Finally, as a new person to android, please help me get to know my phone. I want a weather app like in HTC Sense, but I don't want to install weather channel or something. I have the NYtimes widget, so I don't need the default news widget. What other kinds of apps should I have?
Finally, I will probably do a review of the N1, from a person coming from a iPhone 2g. The N1 is blazing FAST!!! The same apps on N1 load in less than 2 seconds, while on the old iphone, it would have taken 15 seconds. Heavy websites like head-fi load in 3 seconds, compared to almost 30seconds on the 2g.
Forgot to say that my phone runs 2.3.4 gingerbread, which the previous owner flashed before he sold it to me.
Run naked!
First thing i did on getting my N1 is get the hairdryer on to it. Warmed the glue behind the screen edges and then push it down to get a better seal.
Obviously a bit late for you now but may help to stop any more dust getting in
if it bothers you I'll take it off your hands for $150.

I wonder???
In any case, I just discovered this amazing thing called the "wifi never sleep policy."
So here's the deal. I have no mobile data (shocker!!). That means I shut shut off my data roaming and mobile data settings. Since I am often around wifi, I just use that. I notice that when the phone has been untouched for maybe 20 minutes or so, when my desktop client gets an email, my phone does not. So I looked around, and I found out about the wifi-never sleep policy.
What exactly does this mean? The description says that it will never switch to mobile data, but I have NO mobile data. To have maximum battery life, what should I do? Effectively, if I set to off when screen is off, wouldn't it effectively turn off ALL data (wifi and mobile data, which was never on to begin with).
Also, I could opt for 2g networks only, but I don't know if that's useful.
Still you should set wifi sleep policy to never. Its super efficient even with wifi on.

I have some dust on the bottom left corner if my screen as well. I wish I knew how to get it out. It's noticeable when there's sun shining on the phone.
I opened to clean my n1 before, but new dust came back two weeks later. Just like I didn't do anything.
I don't have any dust under my screen but i do have one hair under the screen. I leave it there to remind me of the 7 year old sweat shop worker who built my phone in China. I imagine him playfully giggling with the sweatshop child worker seated next to him, then with a firm swat to the back of the head, echoing from the taskmasters whip behind him. Then franticly and quickly pressing the digitizer on my nexus into place. But not soon enough for the single hair to fall down into its final resting place. This single storyless tear , frozen in its technological tomb for eternity .
Lest we forget

I don't know where the previous user engraved his email, but if its on the battery cover, then why don't you get a replacement cover from cnn.cn?

Get a screen protector. No need for a case.
I'd take it. With mine, i dropped it a few times so I have dings on the darker gray plastic bit but othe than that it's great.
The resale of the phone is probably most affected by the email engraving.

I'm still waiting. People are reporting C8s with screen lift, although it seems to be less frequent now than before.
Sorry for not citing specific posts, but I am following user reports closely and it is still happening.
It's possible that new units are being inspected more thoroughly but no other measures have been taken. That would make the defect harder to spot, lowering the reported incidence rate, but would do nothing to actually solidify the left side.
I would also be skeptical of anyone who claims that their unit is flawless who doesn't post a picture. This may sound paranoid, but there have been users who claimed their device was perfect until they posted a photo of a unit with screen separation.

Sorry for doubting you, but would you mind posting a photo of the horizon test? I've gotten three bad units and I'm waiting to repurchase.
To check if your screen is lifting, hold the device with the right side facing you. Look across the display and use the left bezel as a silver horizon line. If the black display is higher at any point, you'll be able to see it interrupt that silver line.
Here is an example of a perfectly flush display, looking across the device from the right side.

All of these are from the right portrait side, correct?
The first one isn't very clear. The second looks fine. But in the third one the bezel seems to disappear under the ASUS logo.
Why do you think that is?
I am on #5 now since 7/14
1st C6 - would turn off at 20% "show low low battery logo" even after calibrating bad battery? Perfect screen, exchanged
2nd C7 - bad left side screen separation/lift, exchanged
3rd C7 - dust under the screen, 2 spots , exchanged
4th C7- minor left side screen seperation/lift, just started doing the death at 20% exactly like the first C6 I had for no reason today, have had it since last Sunday and had been charging/decharging fine, just sent my wife to exchange it again. I am sure Gamestop is sick of us by now. Said it is a C8 I will edit how it turns out. Considering I am 4 for 4 with issues, I am just hoping no lift and the battery doesn't act stupid after a week or two or I'm calling it quits on this one.

As a matter of fact, the bezel does disappear at the center. I guess my C8OK does have some screen lift. But does that minor issue warrant a return? I would say hell no. If something as minor as this would discourage you as a buyer then you might have other issues.

Well my C8 has lift on the left hand side, not as bad as first C7 I had, but worse than the last.
Screen seems fine otherwise no dead pixels or dust , but obviously there is no special fix as some people keep speculating, I'm 5 for 5 now with defects
** I actually just opened it up to tighten the screws see if it would help, two screws are missing along the left side. I swear Asus needs to hire some better monkeys over in that chinese plant, I'm done taking it back for refund. Maybe around tax time they will have ironed this out

Thank you for clarifying.
If you decide to look further into the matter you will find that the physical presence of a little lift isn't the concern.
These displays have a low stress tolerance and aren't designed to be flexed at all during use. If your screen isn't securely fastened to the case, that means it will be bending even if you don't notice it, and that runs the risk of cracking the screen.
It's not a death sentence by any means, but the risk is there no matter how minor the lift appears to be. Also, there is a tendency for the separation to spread over time. The adhesive bonding the display to the left side of the case is already failing. This adhesive is flimsy and sensitive to heat according to the teardowns people have conducted.
I would not advise you to keep that (those?) units if you're going to be dealing with ASUS worst case scenario. It might be worth keeping a unit with screen lift under the Play store warranty depending on how they choose to handle these issues, but you don't want to deal with ASUS.
Sorry about the bad news.

Its not bad news at all. Your view is a dooms day view. Like most items they all will suffer from wear and tear and eventually you're going to have to say goodbye to your little gadget. Even if you get a perfect one, who's to say it won't lift in a few weeks or months? Like I mentioned before, I only paid $250 for them and in a year from now they're be worth even less.

Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda premium
I use a very small #0 flathead and pry open near the headphone jack, once you get one of the clips up it just unsnaps the whole way around very easy.

Don't mistake my motives. I'm glad that you are happy with your purchase.
I'm only notifying you of the possible risks, which I believe warrant a mention since they do exceed the concerns of normal wear and tear.
Remember that internationally this tablet can cost much more than you or I paid for it. It's important for people to be able to make an informed decision about whether or not to purchase it, and you being honest about your screen inspection, even though you think I'm being OCD, was very helpful in that regard. You would be surprised at how many people believe facts are subjective when tech company loyalties come into play.
Hopefully your tablets won't give you any trouble. Your lift is certainly not as severe as many of the units from July that are still going strong.
Hello guys .
I had my htc one for 3 months now , and today i dropped it having a dent on the edge which prevented me from using the volume buttons ; So i finally i made my mind to tear it apart . Took me several hours (have an exam on monday so was not giving full attention on the phone)
It was easy to take apart .
used a hair dryer to heat up the phone and removed the bottom speaker cover and it was pretty easy and using a blade moved up on both sides for several times , but nothing was separating , so i did the same thing on the top and using a guitar pick inserting the guitar pic on the top pushed back the white poly-carbonate and then after some efforts the back housing finally separated . Everything is working i did damage the poly-carbonate. But i did not have a new housing to change with , will post a video and pics once i have it . I dont have the money to buy one today . Will borrow from parents and order one on monday

Taking it apart was never the problem, the problem was taking it apart without damaging the phone, mostly by prying it open and damaging the finish.
John.
Try putting it back together now.
Disassembling stuff is mostly straightforward, however assembling it back can be a PITA..
If you are able to take apart the phone without damaging anything except for the back, then you are absolutely awesome.
That's all we need to be able to do. The replacement back is only 25 dollars. If it is easy to remove the back and put on a new one, then this will come in handy for people who scratched or dented their backs or cracked their camera lenses. Also, once OEM parts for the red and blue are available, we'll be able to change the colors of our phones to our liking.
Again, awesome.
If you look at the op`s photo in post 2, the right hand side of the back case looks like something has been chewing at it.

HTC One Repairability Score: One out of 10 (10 is easiest to repair)
Very, very difficult (possibly impossible?) to open the device without damaging the rear case. This makes every component extremely difficult to replace.
The battery is buried beneath the motherboard and adhered to the midframe, hindering its replacement.
The display assembly cannot be replaced without removing the rear case—this will make the most common repair, a damaged screen, nearly impossible.
Copper shielding on many components is difficult to remove and replace.
Solid external construction improves durability....
See for them it's difficult -.- . Just wanted to say it's not

I could...but the cost isn't too far off from an official repair ($100US) but even if I fixed the screen I loose the water resistance because as you can see there's a chunk of the bottom left frame missing

Indeed. I kept it naked because I had the charging dock and I didn't want to deal with taking the case on and off all the time. I should've gotten one. Phone landed corner first which is why the damage is like this. If it was flat on the back it might have taken it better

Well I ordered My G-Pad on 12/31/2013 and payed $300 to get it here with free shipping. Arrived today and must Say Im fairly Disappointed. The item came and as most was not sealed but I didn't mind that. It had dust all over the screen and has 2 scratches on it. You would think they would wrap these things up or something. Anyway turned it on an I immediately noticed the light bleed on the screen at the bottom. Immediately decided this one is going back as soon as possible. I also have scuffs on the back of the G Pad even though its supposed to be new. Tired Wiping it of to no avail. Hopefully this doesn't take to long to go back and come back to me its highly annoying. :crying:

What do you think about the light bleed, is it that bad ? Or is it not worth returning and going through the whole return process ? Anyone with similar results ?
That sucks. I though I might have a light scratch on the screen but it was acutely in the protective film on the screen. Once I pulled it off I could see the screen was perfectly fine. I agree 100% it does seem like there should be something else covering it when you open it up.
On a side note when I got my nexus 7 for christmas it had plastic film all the way around the device kinda like a clear envelope. I went through two nexus 7 before giving up and ordering the g pad

Your Pics clearly show this was not this unit's 1st time leaving this vendor..
May I offer a suggestion?
Return this unit for a REFUND.. save or come up with $60.00 more and purchase a Google Play Edition from Google.. If you are not able to walk into a BestBuy to make your purchase. Come'on there is no question this unit was used and returned. just pay a little more and get one from either Google or BestBuy that will more than likely be a factory fresh unit.. That's my suggestion anyway.

Truthfully that light bleed is dependant on what brightness you are at because if that is on greater than 50% brightness you likely will not notice it on anything but an all black screen in a dark room. Usually in this lighting environment I tend to have brighness down below 20%and light bleed is near invisible

I don't know about it being used. I just got mine in from Newegg today, and it had the same dust, granted no scratches. The scratches were probably from someone carelessly checking the boxes to check for colors. Pretty annoying, and unacceptable, but I doubt it wasn't new.
Hopefully you get a better screen as far as bleeding goes. It honestly didn't seem as bad as others I've seen, most tablets have some amount of bleeding if you have it in the right light.

Eh..
That much dust to flip the cover up and check color
What type of room then are they checking color in? That's a lot of dust to just be flying around..
That's why the best option is for the OP to just pony up, walk into a BestBuy ( if available ) and check the unit immediately onsite.. if after turning it on there is lightbleed beyond what the OP is comfortable with.. he can pick another unit right on the spot and walk out 100% satisfied.. That's what I did. and things work out quite well.

Hello friend.
The scratches at the back of the device is sign of this tablet at least having been laying on a table and being picked up..
As for the dust on top of the screen protector, that could be anything, it could have been sliding in there thru the unsealed package, it could have been in the shipping box.. Or the room they kept the stock in could be dirty as well..
The light bleed at the top right corner of the screen, on the picture, is horrendous. I have not seen anything as bad since my Nexus 7 2012 edition.
I am sorry about your experience.

FWIW, I've bought lots of stuff from Newegg over many years. I've generally had a good experience with them. The only issues I've seen in the past is that sometimes they didn't package things well for shipping (hard disk drives, e.g.). I bought my G Pad from them last month, and it arrived in perfect condition with no defects that I've noticed. (My G Pad has the blue line, but I don't consider that a defect.)

That is exactly what mine looked like from newegg, received today. The previous one I had from Best Buy looked the same minus the white dust.
Wow, I would cancel my order immediately and get the Google Play Edition from the Play Store. Mine was in sealed package. Works out of the box very very nice. yes, you will spend a little bit more money but it will be well worth it.
there is little doubt that the one you received was a returned item that had been returned for the same reasons you don't want it.
This is exactly how I received mine too. 2 small scratches on the back plastic and also unsealed, looked like it was opened already.
Didn't have any dust though.. Came from a Belgian online shop Conrad.be
Not gonna bother sending it back though..
Fyi best buy has them for 299 again. I will be going in for a price adjustment!!

Update !
They sent out my RMA and I got it today. Unlike others hey didn't learn from me and still sent an unsealed one. Dust was still all over the screen cover lol. There were some smudges again on the back so this must be a manufacturing issue. Plus, I don't want to bother to send it back again and wait another week+. The light bleed seems to me to be less than the first model I had so Im satisfied for now. Thanks Everyone , its a great tablet so jump on it while you can.
