Google Play on Rooted Device - Thrive General

I am on a 10" Toshiba Thrive with DaleNet IMM76D.01.000072314 Deodexed Stock Rooted ROM (US ICS 4.0.4) installed. I tried to order a movie from Google Play for the first time since updating my Rom only to find the error "This video's rental period has expired" every time I try to order the video I rented.
I have tried the Voodoo OTA RootKeeper & Temp Root Remover. I also tried watching the video straight from youtube on multiple browsers. Chrome stated "Your browser does not currently recognize any of the video formats available". Opera stated "Sorry, this video can not be played on this system. Firefox and standard android browser stated "This video is not available on mobile. Add to playlist to watch it later on a PC". Youtube stated "Unsupported Video Format".
This is the only active thread I have found specifically with the Toshiba Thrive in mind.
thriveforums.org/forum/toshiba-thrive-help/13237-unrooting.html
I am tempted to unroot my Thrive but that would make it so I can't move apps to my SD card which I prefer to keep. I appreciate any support resolving this issue.
In the mean time is there any other streaming applications that let you watch movies on a rooted device? I tried Vudu and Amazon with both claiming that my device was unsupported. I am trying my hardest to watch movies legally but they are making it difficult. Eventually I am going to give up and download torrents or stream off of one of the free streaming sites that is dominating the video war against the movie studios.

I am using an AT105 on CM10 (unofficial) and have duplicated the problem. I have only tried Google Play, I haven't tried the sites mentioned. I will try to duplicate on my T769 also using CM10 in a bit.

Hulu Plus also gives an error. Theirs is "Streaming unavailable. Please check your network and make sure that you have the latest update for your device and try again." Netflix on the other hand looks great and the recent refresh is a bit smoother.

Interesting, similar ROM, but my CM10 Samsung Blaze 4G works fine with Play Movies, as well as Hulu Plus and all other video forms....

Is it possible to stream this video instead of download it on the Epic?

Hello, I was just wondering if it was possible to stream this video, its a direct link,so I was just wondering if I could stream it. Here is the link:
http://www.putlocker.com/get_file.php?download=7J7TGQ5TSA25&key=3b8c484fe4425b25&mobile=1
I've tried streaming before and never got it to work. I read somewhere that Android 3.0 added video streaming and that was the first time I read anything that implied previous versions of Android couldn't do it.
I've definitely been able to stream some, but not all direct link videos. From dk28 & now from ec05.

Wow thanks for sharing that! Being a VLC fan I can't wait for this to get out of alpha stage. So far I've only tried opening a .wmv, but it was flawless. I saw that others were able to open AVIs and MKVs in the comments at the link.
There are two different apks. One is called neon and the other NoNeon. My A500 uses the NoNeon apk.
Don't mention it. Saw it was not on here, so took the chance to post the thread. Would appreciate if you guys could report back in with your success or failures.

The non neon version plays all the avi files thru es file explorer on iconia a500 with thor2000ro v14.2 rom. MP3 files are not recognized by it. Also it crashes when there are large number of files in a folder or in the root folder of the usb drive.

the non neon version works on my iconia with thor's rom. Does not plays mp3's. Crashes when there are large number of avi files are in the folder of the usb drives.
Ther is another version from member craigacgomez,it did not worked for me.
Put the neon version on a rooted nook tablet and it works well. Music and movies in one player. Music sound was good and there was no stuttering in movies.
It is still bare bones - just a player and no playlists, random play, etc. but a great start!
very good
thanks
i hope this one works i tried one and it said it was an older alpha beta and kept crashing and google play wont let me download it it something about not available in my devices country
You can go to http://nightlies.videolan.org/build/ and choose the tegra2 version. It installs and works (kinda) but very much beta.
I love VLC
Looks promising, but not quite there yet. In the meantime, have you used MX player? Damn thing plays pretty much anything I throw at it without issues.
There have been a few updates to the nightlies over the past few days. More functionality. Looking better! http://nightlies.videolan.org/build/

Transfer. avi or mp4 to A500 wont work??

Hi i have a couple movies on my computer I am trying to tranfer to my device via the usb cable and am having no luck whatsoever. It tells me the file type is not supported and may not be able to play on my device. It only gives me tge option to cancel or skip it. I have tried converting and still no luck. I did however test throwing a mp3 song on it and copied fine. Any ideas?? Or alternative ways? Id really like to be able to use my hdmi cable to my hdtv. Thanks
If you check the threads you will find countless ways to transfer nearly every kind of video format to your tab. To mention just two progs (1) Handbrake - This will keep you busy for some considerable time working on all the possible combinations - and (2) Catalyst 4.
If you check "WereCatf's" tutorial on Handbrake (TOP of this forum) you can't go far wrong.
If you just want to keep it down and dirty and very simple just convert all your movies to mp4 format and then pick a player - possibly MoboPlayer or MX Video Player or whatever takes your fancy.
You may still get that error after conversion. The easiest way to do it if it still won't let you transfer via usb is to pull the micro sdcard out of you a500 and load it directly to your card from the computer.
Easier to just ignore the error.
I get that same error with whatever files I'm trying to transfer and even if they work just fine on the tablet. I just ignore the error and transfer anyways.

So is MX Player, and it offers more codec support.
You can't always ignore the error message, sometimes it only gives you the option to cancel or skip.
Thanks everybody for your insight however yes it was not giving me the option to copy over to my Tablet. I solved this issue by going to the Acer support page and installing the new drivers! Very easy and now I can transfer effortlessly. My only issue now is the movies are very random with which player they will perform best on. Some play with no audio but perfect picture on B Player and choppy with sound on Mobo. Or vice-versa. I don't see how just changing the players around can change things but it does so I just keep a couple different players and it is a crap shoot what one will play it properly.

Problem streaming videos from web

Hi,
Read through video streaming search results and didn't find quite the question I have so here goes...I'm trying to watch some TV programs streaming from a website mobilev*ds.org and am having a problem getting some (most) links to play - some play eventually but after multiple efforts. I have tried a nunber of browsers (Dolphin, Chrome, Firefox with Flash side installed) but none are consistently working. I also use the same streaming site with my iPhone and the programs launch Quicktime with no problems. Any ideas what I might try next? I'd rather not download the material.
Thanks,
Jack
It appears that site uses Flash to stream the videos, at least that's what Chrome on my PC indicates. It appears the videos are in MP4 format which would explain why Quicktime would open and play it. Since Flash is not officially supported on the Nexus 7 people have had to try various workarounds to enable it. Generally it involves side loading Flash player version 11.1.111.5 or above. Do a search through the Nexus 7 forums here for "flash" and you'll see much discussion on subject.
Here is one such thread on sideloading Flash and using the Firefox Beta browser.

Thanks for the advice - bit strange that the vids are MP4 but will play on Chrome on iPhone which doesn't support flash either. Not sure how this all works....tried the sideload of Flash (11.5) but got a flash error on Firefox - maybe I'll try a later version of flash and see if that works...some of the vids work in Chrome on the Nexus 7 while some don't (I use only Videobam links). I thought Nexus 7 could cope with MP4 files?
Don't suppose there is a way to browse these files without downloading using say MX player?
Cheers,
Jack
Have you tried changing your user agent in dolphin browser to iPhone or iPad? Some websites automatically assume that since you're using an android tablet to browse the site, you can watch videos in flash. I've found that changing the user agent to an idevice will often force the site to switch to HTML5 video.
If switching the user agent doesn't immediately work. Leave the user agent as iPhone or iPad and reboot. Then try it again. That has helped me before.
If any more experienced members want to weigh in on this question, please do.

Thanks - I'll try that later. Did a root around and have a few things to try later on one of them being the above. Perhaps (though I'm not sure quite how) MX player would be an option, couldn't find a Nexus 7 example but have seen it play an online stream - not sure how this would work on N7 as when opening the MX Player app I didn't find an option to browse or enter a URL. The example I saw showed a user browsing a site and launching a vid and then being asked which player to use, something which doesn't happen when I launch that particular mobile video site. Perhaps there are some settings within the browser that I can play with as you've indicated above....If I have any success I'll post and let you know, anyone else feel free to suggest a workaround....
Thanks,
Jack

I side loaded the install_flash_player_ICS.apk (http://download.macromedia.com/pub/...roid/11.1.115.17/install_flash_player_ics.apk) before installing the Firefox browser. Then visited the site and successfully streamed several TV shows.
I would assume that you would have to download the video to have MX Player launch the file. Might want to try VLC Player and see if you can stream content the way you're trying to stream it.

MX Player can stream from a network location. You do need put in the full network path to the media file.
Edit to add: I took the streaming file link for one show, http://mvds1.org/media/tv/grimm/Grimm.S02E04.Quill.HDTV.x264-2HD.mp4.php, and dropped the .php when pasted in the MX player network stream entry box and was able to stream the video.

Hi,
Thanks to everyone for the help - I tried 2 methods last night and was successful in both (mostly). I downloaded the Boat Browser from the play store and it played the videobam links, albeit not great quality but acceptable enough. The mobile video site also had links to another stream (show was B Bad) which I could never get to play in Quicktime (it stuttered all over the place) and while I could copy the URL to MX Player, remove the .php extension and get it to load, it had the same stuttering issues (but the video playback quality was better). I tried the videobam link in MX Player and couldn't get it to work - the videobam links don't give the fill file extension, just videobam.com/GFQ.....(no MP4 as with the link posted by the user above.
So I'm quite happy with the Boat browser for viewing these vids and hopefully it will work with other sites, MX Player has a nicer look/feel to it but I am not sure how to find the proper links from videobam to play the vid in there - any suggestions would be welcomed.
Thanks for all the help to those that made suggestions,
Jack
Do you have a link to the video your trying to play from the videobam site or a link to the main media site that streams videos from the videobam site? The videobam site appears tobe a hosting site where people host video that they then link to from other websites. See the videobam/faq page for more information. You may be able to stream or download directly from the videobam site if the download link is available on the page that is streaming the video. See the videobam demo page for one such example.
Some streaming sites do not provide easy access to the streaming file to prevent users from doing what your attempting to do by streaming to MX Player. They generate money they use to operate by having users view the video with advertising embedded on the streaming web page.
As to the issue of video quality. Many factors can affect the end user quality. They range from poor recording quality, poor encoding quality, poor internet connections between your broadband provider and the site that streams the content, and your overall broadband speed. Trying to stream high definition content through a low speed broadband connection can contribute to a poor streaming experience.
Good to know. Ima try that ics apk cus um havin issues too

What is the version / date for the ES File Explorer APK? One techie reviewer noted back in 2014 that it contained a virus - so I have been reluctant to install it. This app after all gets access to almost everything within the box. Can some give me a warm fuzzy feel for this app?
On a separate note - can someone suggest an App that will access my DLNA NAS Server?

Ignore the request for the DLNA Player
Found one just now - called UPnPlay - very simple, fast and gets the core job done and I like apps that stick to that principal. And everything works just with the FTV2 remote !!!
Once you find the video, it can push it to my Samsung SmartTV (the TV popped up a message asking if to "Allow" / "Deny" request) ... or use the VLC app. I used the VLC app and its FAST !
I wonder if VLC has a way to fetch it directly?

The current version on Google Play ... I have to use the wireless K400 keyboard. One the video starts, the original remote allows you to pause and play the video. I am fine with that.
When I installed the youtube app (android tv), the casting stopped working. Is there any workaround this?
i'm in the uk and would add : mediahhh, mobdro, uk tv now, tube+ (youtube alternate), showbox, vimeo, soundcloud, mixcloud, netflix, ted, and tunein radio to the list of essential apps.
I've plenty of devices for browsing the web & the like so I've got my firestarter powered fire tv stick only running media apps ... to think I nearly binned it on ebay before i'd discovered the firestarter front-end & the fire utility app. *facepalm*

the others are out there - from the usual sources.
