Transfer. avi or mp4 to A500 wont work?? - Acer Iconia A500

Hi i have a couple movies on my computer I am trying to tranfer to my device via the usb cable and am having no luck whatsoever. It tells me the file type is not supported and may not be able to play on my device. It only gives me tge option to cancel or skip it. I have tried converting and still no luck. I did however test throwing a mp3 song on it and copied fine. Any ideas?? Or alternative ways? Id really like to be able to use my hdmi cable to my hdtv. Thanks

If you check the threads you will find countless ways to transfer nearly every kind of video format to your tab. To mention just two progs (1) Handbrake - This will keep you busy for some considerable time working on all the possible combinations - and (2) Catalyst 4.
If you check "WereCatf's" tutorial on Handbrake (TOP of this forum) you can't go far wrong.
If you just want to keep it down and dirty and very simple just convert all your movies to mp4 format and then pick a player - possibly MoboPlayer or MX Video Player or whatever takes your fancy.

You may still get that error after conversion. The easiest way to do it if it still won't let you transfer via usb is to pull the micro sdcard out of you a500 and load it directly to your card from the computer.

Easier to just ignore the error.

I get that same error with whatever files I'm trying to transfer and even if they work just fine on the tablet. I just ignore the error and transfer anyways.

So is MX Player, and it offers more codec support.

You can't always ignore the error message, sometimes it only gives you the option to cancel or skip.

Thanks everybody for your insight however yes it was not giving me the option to copy over to my Tablet. I solved this issue by going to the Acer support page and installing the new drivers! Very easy and now I can transfer effortlessly. My only issue now is the movies are very random with which player they will perform best on. Some play with no audio but perfect picture on B Player and choppy with sound on Mobo. Or vice-versa. I don't see how just changing the players around can change things but it does so I just keep a couple different players and it is a crap shoot what one will play it properly.

Play Avatar and other drm protected video on a tv

I found this method by accident trying to play Avatar on my tv through the video cable. It might not work for everyone and it might not work with all drm protected video. I am not responsible for what happens to your device
1 Plug the video cable into your phone and tv
2 Activate TV out on the phone
(menu, settings, display, TV out)
3 Open your video player
4 Choose a drm protected video and play it
(you will see a warning on the tv: TV0out not supported while application running. Phone display only)
5 Unplug the video cable from the phone, the movie will pause
6 Unpause the movie let it play for a couple of seconds
7 Plug the video cable back in the Vibrant and enjoy
Nice find, will try it out

I didn't know that you couldn't play this file on any other source. That kinda' sucks. I just bought my Vibrant after selling my T-Mobile HD2, and I was looking forward to watching this via my home theater.
The funny thing is that the previous T-Mobile phone included sponsored versions of Transformers 1 and 2, both of which had no DRM on them. I played them via my PC without any problem.
How does this DRM impact custom ROMs?k Will I not be able to play the movie on a custom ROM?

Custom Rom's won't do anything, except this.
lets say you keep your Avatar movie, on the stock you HAVE a avatar ICON app to press and play, on custom roms, the icon app can be replaced with moving things to the system/app or just play it from gallery or video player.
Nothing more than that.
DRM uses other apps too, so if you were to delete that, other core processes wouldn't work, so do what most people do. Freeze the DRM services using Paid version of titanium backup.
Works everytime for me, it works with movies from media hub also. I don't know if it matters or not but I am on Nero V3. Try the method a couple of times.

Well I'm actually referring to the fact that it appears on a lot of apps. Such as T-MobileTV, Avatar, anything that uses the camera, etc. I would actually like to use Tango with it so that I can flip my phone around (camera facing me) and use Video call with the video input in my truck. That would be useful.

hi,is it possible to stream movies wirelessly from a vista laptop onto the a500 through the home network? if yes,how do i set it up? cos i've tried everything
Well if you plan to use only on the home network their clear.fi app works. For remote access I have been using subsonic it does require a donation to allow video streaming

Do you know how to get other folders to show up from the clear.fi app? All I can see for video streaming from my PC, is a video/collections folder. I would like to be able to see my media folder that I have on my desktop.

How in the heck did you get plex to work? Did you change the default player to something else? If so how?
I load a movie and it times out on every one. When I contacted the makers of plex they say that it is not working on the acer yet and offer a refund.
I use ps3 media server on the pc and upnplay which is free from the android market for the A500 , The ps3 media server trans-codes on the fly and I use mobo player from upn to play the content. easy as 123 setup and works perfectly and also means I can play any file type. 1080p is a bit jerky but 720p is as smooth as silk. Did I mention its all free

I think that the Acer app only shows/shares the stuff you have in my documents. So you can't watch movies through it if you have them on another HD (like I do sadly).
I am able to see all of my share's on any of my drives. But my home network is wide open on this side of the router.
Might check your sharing settings on you pc, and your firewall if applicable.
i do recomend subsonic wholely just a one time donation unoocks video streaming. you select the folders to share music and movies and the app is free on android and one port needed to be opened to view from anywhere tablet phone or say work computer. also to with the ability to download the content to
I have tried:
Plex: Works but slow as hell and it didn't let me skip a part of the movie so I had to watch every movie from the start.
Subsonic: IMHO a Plex clone so I didn't bother with it and I couldn't test it to see if it streams movies any better.
Upnplay: Ugly and clunky interface but it does stream movies from any UPNP server without installing any additional software and it's free. It uses your default browser and it can skip in a movie so I'm using that. It's not pretty but it does work well.

I won't donate just to test it but the web interface was worse than what Plex offers and I've tried Plex (was not impressed) so I've just skipped it.
As I've said. The best solution is the one that doesn't require any additional software on my PC. So even though Upnplay is ugly it gets the job done.
P.S.: I have my opinions you have yours so unless don't force your on me and I won't force mine on you. I've compiled a list that would be handy for me a few days ago when I was searching for the same thing and I hope that helps someone. Bickering over trivial stuff sure won't.

Subsonic is free to try, the app is much more intuitive than the web interface when used on an Android device (the web interface of any program that also provides a native application will be much less intuitive on any platform). I'm not saying there is anything wrong with forming an opinion such as yours, but I will say Subsonic and Plex are two different products, trying one piece of one product and using that as a reason to dismiss another different (and competing) product is just being ignorant. If you want to be ignorant, run with it, but don't ask for peoples advice and opinions and simply dismiss them based on your own ignorance. Or, just don't ask for advice if you aren't willing to listen to it. Oh.. wait, that's right.. this isn't even your thread, troll.
Now, as for the OP, if this is simply to watch inside your own network, things like Subsonic, Plex, etc. are more than what you need. All you really need is what mrvanes outlined, or even just a file manager that supports network shares (like File Manager HD, File Expert, EStrongs, etc). Browse to your media and open it (a good file manager will not require to copy to local first) with the program of your choosing.

[Q] Any Mac Users Have Any Advice For Copying HD Video Files to Tab 10.1?

Any advice on the best way to use a Mac to transfer Avi\Mkv files to the tab? Since the Mass Storage Mode doesn't work on Mac on this tab, anyone have any tips on moving files to it?
I did it once, right after I/O to have a movie to watch on the plane home. It involved using VMware and a whole lot of swearing -- not worth doing again. It was pretty funny at breakfast the morning after they handed them out. MBPs were, by far, the most numerous computers I saw there and lots of people were noting that that it was crazy they were such a PIA to connect to a mac.
I dont have a mac but i use WiFi FTP Box to move files to and from my Devices.
(Epic 4G, Galaxy Tab 7 and 10.1)

Its nice because you can use it anywhere that has a network and a computer with FTP access. Make sure you read the Description, it tells you all the settings you need.
I use file expert. You connect via wifi. Then you can use a browser window or FTP to upload. I have the info saved on my FTP program and I can upload anything quick and easy

Best thing is to convert your videos to mp4 before transferring to the Tab to save you the hassle of guessing if this video will play "jittery" or not. I convert everything i have to mp4 because nowadays everything will play mp4 just fine.
I use VisualHub (no longer in development) and Handbrake (free and very good).
As for file transfers, apps like WifiExplorer Pro create a sort of FTP server between your Tab and Mac and use the wifi network to transfer files to the Tab. Even Estrongs File Manager has the option, just manually input the I.P address of your Mac and turn on file sharing (specify folders to share in sharing preferences) on the Mac.
Lastly, yes, the media experience on Android vs iPad is sad really.

[Q] Best solution to play media stored on Windows?

I read and read and still not sure what the best approach is for streaming media (mp3, flac, mkv) to the N7 on the LAN from a Win7 PC. Any server software you could recommend that could potentially do transcoding on the fly if needed, with caching so that it happens only the first time a file is played and then maybe even be able to copy the transcoded/cached file to the internal N7 storage for offline playback?
And is MX Player the player to use on N7?
Thanks for your help recommending an end to end solution.

Have you tried iMediaShare? MX Player is probably the best player out there right now.
From the description of the app, I'm not sure how iMediaShare helps me. I'm looking to stream media files stored on a Win7 PC to my N7.
BSplayer has lan function and will stream any videos from any windows shares.ESfile explorer will let you veiw, stream or edit any files on your window shares. You don't need anything on your computer as long as it is setup for sharing on home network. Both of these work great and have been updated for 4.2.

My current favourite is dice player.

Airstream is great. Available as an app on Android and a program on your PC.
I'm not sure if it's been fixed yet, but I know that occasionally it wouldn't allow me to skip. As in; if I was to close the movie/episode to finish watching later, when I opened it back up, I'd have to watch from the start.
Check it out, it might be fixed.
I know my dad also uses something else. uPnP Play on Android and a program on his PC that allows him to share/stream files to other devices on the LAN. So you can stream directly to any device, not just your tab.
If you're interested in the latter I can contact him and ask what it's called. This one allowed you to skip.
I use bubbleupnp for my streaming solution. It could be the same as the previous poster, as it does allow you to stream to any device. It still needs a upnp server installed on the pc, windows media player should work, as well as xbmc, foobar (with the plug in) and likely many more. You can also set up remote streaming so you can stream while away from home. It is a pay app, however there is a limited function trial to see if it works for you.
