Wow thanks for sharing that! Being a VLC fan I can't wait for this to get out of alpha stage. So far I've only tried opening a .wmv, but it was flawless. I saw that others were able to open AVIs and MKVs in the comments at the link.
There are two different apks. One is called neon and the other NoNeon. My A500 uses the NoNeon apk.

Don't mention it. Saw it was not on here, so took the chance to post the thread. Would appreciate if you guys could report back in with your success or failures.

failed to play severall different file types, mkv, flv and an avi i had. Its to be expected though after all it is an alpha stage app. I've had it for a while now, just a heads up if you go to cvpcs's blog 'still loading... ' he had compiled the NEON and nonNEON for download, if you dont know which one to get a500 is nonNEON.

The non neon version plays all the avi files thru es file explorer on iconia a500 with thor2000ro v14.2 rom. MP3 files are not recognized by it. Also it crashes when there are large number of files in a folder or in the root folder of the usb drive.

the non neon version works on my iconia with thor's rom. Does not plays mp3's. Crashes when there are large number of avi files are in the folder of the usb drives.
Ther is another version from member craigacgomez,it did not worked for me.

Put the neon version on a rooted nook tablet and it works well. Music and movies in one player. Music sound was good and there was no stuttering in movies.
It is still bare bones - just a player and no playlists, random play, etc. but a great start!

very good

thanks
i hope this one works i tried one and it said it was an older alpha beta and kept crashing and google play wont let me download it it something about not available in my devices country

You can go to http://nightlies.videolan.org/build/ and choose the tegra2 version. It installs and works (kinda) but very much beta.

I love VLC
Looks promising, but not quite there yet. In the meantime, have you used MX player? Damn thing plays pretty much anything I throw at it without issues.

There have been a few updates to the nightlies over the past few days. More functionality. Looking better! http://nightlies.videolan.org/build/

.mkv and subtitles

I was looking around and saw that the video player does not display the subtitles for .mkv files...does anyone know if it would be possible to somehow enable the video player to be able to display them?

Bumping.
I've got the same question. If the default player doesn't play mkvs with subtitles, is there another player that does so (already tried Rock Player).
I think we're outta luck. I asked this question a while back and got nothing but crickets.
If you absolutely need the subtitles, you could always hard encode them, but it is probably only worth the time if you absolutely cannot do without subtitles.
Nothing on the market right now which will get the subtitles. It sucks I know. There is a player in development that will support it but its not too close to release.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
Have you guys tried mVideoPlayer?
It has pretty decent support for subtitles. Not sure if it plays embedded ones in mkv's, but it definitely does support subtitles.
Strange, I recall seeing a thread on Xda that had the same question but there was a guy who posted a picture/screencap of mkv and subtitles playing on a video player. I should have bookmarked that thread.

I've tried this but it didn't work. I extract the subs in .ass format and tried to load it but mVideoPlayer couldn't find the file even after I change the directory.
Try searching for meridian player in the market.

Did you make sure to rename the .ass file to match the .mkv you extracted it from? Make sure the file names match and put them both in the same directory on your phone. mVideoPlayer will load the subs automatically after you open the .mkv. It works flawlessly for me on my Galaxy S.
To view MKV files with subtitles, I've been using MKVtoolnix with MKVextractGUI to extract the subtitles from the MKV container. After the extraction, make sure the subtitle file(.ass, .srt, etc.) has the same name as the MKV file and place it in the same folder as the video. When that's done, use mVideoPlayer to play your file.
Hope this works for you!
I would include links for you guys, but there's a restriction for new users. A quick Google search should help you find the programs you'll need.

the problem with supporting subtitles in .mkv containers...is just that....mkv is JUST a container format, which can contain a myriad of video, audio, and subtitle file formats. And there are several subtitle file formats...
mVideoplayer supports external .SRT subs, so what one can do is use a tool like virtualdubmod or mkvtoolnix to demux subs out of the mkv container and assuming they are SRT, just extract them and name them to the exact name of the MKV file. it's also possible to download SRT subs fairly easily for common videos, but there's the possibility that text timing can be off....
...apparently mVideoPlayer supports .ass as well....
Oh, I just had to place the subs in the same folder as the Video. That worked for me.
Breaking: mVideoPlayer 2.20 updates states that it now supports subs in MKV's. I haven't tried it yet, I'm just now dling it.
Peep here.
Support for subtitles in MKV files, but you need a phone that supports playback of mkv.

edit: more info
Yep, now it is time again for another beta version of mVideoPlayer. This time the big news are subtitle support in mkv files for phones that support playback of these files. (Galaxy S for example).
Full change-log:
- Support for subtitles in MKV files for all Galaxy S owners!
- Toggle subtitle on/off has been replaced with 'Subtitle Tracks' since MKV files may have multiple subtitle tracks.
- Now remembers previous search phrase in all search dialogs.
- IMDb Info accessible from poster search activity through long press on movie.
- Fix for poster search cache showing up in Gallery app on Android < 2.2 devices.

MP4 on Xoom?

Anyone know of a program that will play MP4 video files on the Xoom? All my video files are in the format and I'd prefer not to convert them all when I put them on the Xoom.
I couldn't find the VLC Media Player for Android...
Any suggestions?

Not for me. It plays the movie choppy and the volume sounds like a voice changer on a bad horror movie.
Comical... but not watchable.

Make sure you are using the universal one, not one for a specific device.

Yeah I tried the Universal one and hardware decoding. No luck still.
i have a question.....how are you guys transferring your files over to the xoom? i tried to drag and drop an mp4 to mine but i get an error message saying "this type of file is not supported on this device". is there something i'm missing.

I thought mp4 was a supported android format? What format is needed for HD playback via the xoom's video player?

You get the same error transferring mp3...think it's because of the way the pc sees the xoom. Just hit ignore.

there is no ignore option....i only get "skip, skip all or cancel", no matter what i choose it doesn't transfer the file. i can transfer mp3's fine but no type of video file will transfer. i'm pretty stuck right now.

Try renaming the file .zip then rename after the copy.
no luck renaming it zip.....i had to rename it .mp3 and it allowed the transfer. i renamed it back to mp4 but the video is choppy. i'm using rockplayer lite from the app market for now.
Can't you guys just open the movie in the Gallery and have it play using the built in video player?

I haven't found a single video player app in the market that work properly and I tried vplayer, Rockplayer and another one, I think it was called qqplayer.. The native player will recognize and play MKV but no sound and very choppy. I successfully played a couple of MP4 files though. Tried an AVI and it gave me the same error message and even though I got is copied to the Xoom, it never showed up in the Gallery.

[Q] Mobo player

I just downloaded mobo player and the codec file for it. I wanted to play video's directly on the internet on my xoom. I thought downloading this would help me but video's are still not playing?
I do not understand the media directory thing is there anything I am missing.
I picked media directory to be my downloads in my Astro file. This is right out of the box. I have done nothing to unlock or root this device.
Can anyone please explain to me what I need to do to play video's from a web page on the net. For example I went to a site for Las Vegas wanted to play video of Terry Feder show would not play?
I'm pretty good at following directions. I understand PC very well just learning about cell phones and tablets.
I only downloaded the codec file because the video still wasn't playing.
I do not want to do anything that will mess up my xoom?
Sorry I think I should have posted this in questions forum.
Did you try tapping and holding the video you want to play then selecting soft decoding? You have to do that to a large majority of videos for the xoom.
Yes I did. When the video appears on the screen there is a small blue dice in the center with a ? on it. There seems to be lots of videos that won't play. Is there anything in the codec file that I need to change. I saw the soft decoding for one of the video extensions?
Just found something that says default using soft decoding in settings I checked it. Still no luck. You tube videos play fine
When I tap the video the screen turns light blue but nothing comes up and their are no options available to select.
you said your trying to play videos from a site. What site and what video format? Link?
Go to metacafe.com any video it does not work. That is just one of the sites. I cannot tell what the video format is? How can i see that. On the right hand bottom of my screen it says autoplay ON. I do not know if that is from Mobo app or something else.
took a spin around the world wide web and seems the videos on your site metacafe are FLV files.
go to the market.. install one of these in the list and see if any will work.
not sure which ones are compatible with the xoom so just go in and check on the tech details. better yet go there with your xoom so it will filter out which ones will work.
you can also just search "flv player" w/o quotes in the market and see what you come up with.
https://market.android.com/search?q=flv+player&so=1&c=apps
That site seems to use a bunch of different kinds of video. Hulu videos wont work, but the flash videos will if you install flash, obviously. Moboplayer is for mp4, avi, mpeg, and other types of video commonly not found streaming on websites.
Just called Motorola and figured out that Flash Player needed to be downloaded. Do I feel stupid. I thought it came with it and was on it when I got it. I then went back to the site and the video played.
Do you think MoboPlayer will interfere with anything on my tablet. Should I remove it?
Or should I leave it. Don't even know if it works on the xoom. It did not work to get the FLV file working that is supports. Any input would be appreciated.
keep it. it can play other movie formats.

Best Honeycomb video player

I have been searching high and low for a really good video player for Honeycomb. Annoyingly, Google wasn't helping much, with people generally parroting advice like 'install MoboPlayer' (its awful, and its a stretchy app - not even optimised for Honeycomb.)
In short I needed to be able to do the following:
1. Smooth video when played over DLNA (I use Rygel on Ubuntu as my DLNA server, and the excellent Skifta as my client). IMO, the only way to watch torrented videos on a tab is via DLNA - forget CIFS or copying the file locally. What a drag..
2. Optimised for Honeycomb - the "turn the lights out" status bar dots feature was really important.
--
I tried...
RockPlayer Lite - It has an annoying R logo in the corner and doesn't do lights out.
MX Video Player - I found it would go all slow and jerky. At first I thought it was the ads (very obnoxious ad version btw), so I purchased the full version. It did it again so I quickly got a refund.
Daroon Player - I couldn't get it to work very well using DLNA
MoboPlayer - awful stretchy. Comes highly recommended on the web, but I hated it. Doesn't do turn the lights out either.
and the winner is..
DicePlayer
This loads videos quicker than any other via DLNA, and it does lights out. It also has the excellent 'lock screen' feature and gesture control. Its paid, unfortunately, but it does come with an ad free trial.
ANYWAY, here endeth the lesson on what is the best Honeycomb video player. DicePlayer.
mxplayer works ok for me... did you install the armv7 plugin for it? if it is using hw to decode, it should be smooth
I tried the dice player trial version, when playing mkv files with subtitles, it seems to require extracting the subtitles file first, which takes a whole minute's time, that is annoying.... do you have similar issues?

mx player - yes, codecs as suggested. i can't remember if I had the lights out feature working on that.
not sure about the subs - i haven't got any to test. actually I wonder if a subs file over DLNA is even possible?
I concur with your assessment of Dice Player. Decent codec recognition, fast loading, swipe controls for brightness/volume/ffw/rwnd, on the fly adjustment of aspect ratios for screen fit, and the programmer got around the AC3 bottleneck by running the decoding of AC3 on the second core. Something that meant alot to me, as alot of my archived rips have AC3 audio, and it was the only one I found that could decode AC3.
According to the reviews, you have to have an internet connection to use it as it checks the license key when you start the APP every time? What about watching a movie on a plane, in your car, etc?
Seems ludicrous to me
I just disabled wifi and launched Diceplayer. I'm using the licensed edition. I'm using it right now with wifi turned off. Not sure about the reviews you saw, but I can confirm an Internet connection is not required with the full version.

First review on the page:
Fantastic - but shame about the licensing issue. by W99 – November 9, 2011
Amazing app, plays every 720p mkv file that I've thrown at it. HOWEVER: I couldn't play my movies on a 7-hour flight because the app tried to go online to verify the license. Had to resort to reading a book instead!
Disabled wifi, rebooted, and double checked that wifi was still turned off. Status bar confirmed "No Internet Connection". Launched Diceplayer. Smooth sailing with no wifi. I'm unsure, since I purchased the app when I found that it fulfilled all my requirements, but perhaps the reviewers were alluding to the trial app checking the licence as a form of copy protection? That would be my first guess. When I saw your post I knew I'd used it in the absence of wifi, but decided to double check before posting.

Thanks bro, I appreciate it. Not sure why someone would be commenting on a trial for a plane ride, but there's no accounting for that
Now I just have to decide if paying $5+ for a video player is worth it lol
ty again for checking for me
I consider it the best money I've spent since getting my tablet. Its played everything I've thrown at it up to 720p MKV, Divx, Xvid, MP4 etc. Its feature rich as hell, with a splendidly simple user interface. I really like the swipe gestures in play. Swipe across center to the right fast forwards 30 seconds, swipe left rewinds the same. Swipe up or down on the right controls brightness, swipe up or down on left controls volume. The "toggle box" just above sequence slider toggles stretch/4:3/16:9 and many others for full screen/TV out compatibility. My research showed when I bought it that it was the only player that could use Hardware Decoding to save on battery life as well. Plus as of this writing its the only one I know of that can decode AC3. I wouldn't use it on an Android phone as the system requirements are higher, but On Honeycomb it's awesome. Just my 2 cents
Another vote in favor of Diceplayer. I use it exclusvely now, both local files and DLNA streaming. It has played just about everything. I tried the others before this, clearly the best.
Does anyone know if i can switch folders in dice player? i only see my internal and external sd card and i would like to play movies off of my external hdd.
I'll stick to my current player and I'm happy with it.
It can play almost most of media format including MKV files (Matroska) and most importantly, it's FREE.
MXVideo player is the best player. Most importent function for me is hand add subtitles. Very useful if you don't wish to rename subtitles.

+1 for Dice Player. Tried all the usual suspects and came to the same conclusion. Top notch app, however the $5 price tag did seem a bit steep. $2-3 would be more fair, but hey, can't always win.
As far as Mobo Player being highly recommended, I must say it does wonders for me on my phone, however it was less than satisfactory on the A500. Thought I'd point that out. Since buying Dice Player though, I now use it on my phone as well. Might as well get the most out of my $5 right?

It's nice to hear that you have a good player, but it does no good without saying what it is...
I have noticed that no one tried BSplayer.
It's free, plays 720p MKV with subtitles, hides buttons and DLNA works great over my PS3 Media server.
I found it plays MKV much better than Diceplayer.
I purchased MX Player and it plays all of my 720P MKVs with AC3 sound well.
I use HW decoding for the video and software for the audio.
It won't play my 1080P MKVs though.
Are you guys saying Dice Player is better?
I have tried the stock Acer Media Player, Rock Player, Mobo Player, Doubletwist, and Act 1 Video Player. Until recently, Act 1 was my player of choice, but I bought Dice Player and I have to say that to me, it is hands down the best one of them all. The purchase price was money well spent.
As for using an external SD card, I know that in the app settings, you can designate two different media folders. One can be the movies folder on your internal memory, and the other can be a folder on your external SD card. The only thing is that you have to know the folder path as you can only type in the path and not file browse to it when making this setting.

[Q] Nexus 7 32gig, mkv 1080p playback DTS and NTFS support

Hello all
This is my first post, I was going to purchase the new Nexus 7 32gig version which just came out in the UK. I mainly want it to view movies on as I do a lot of travelling. I rip my blu rays into mkv h264 format and they are around 8-10gigs with HD audio.
So my questions are, what is the best player? from searching around and looking on youtube I see different answers, Diceplayer,Mx Player and Bs player. Dice player seems to get a lot of positive results...but....
....some of my movies have DTS sound which i hear the latest Dice and Mx player no longer support. Is there a way to get a previous version of Say Dice player and if so how do I install it if not via the app store?
My last question is I saw recently that Dice player now supports NTFS formatted Usb sticks, I will need this as the movies are quite large, so is there a version of Dice which has DTS support AND NTFS support and how would i go about getting and installing.
Thanks for reading, and any help is greatly appreciated

You sideload them onto the device. Copy the .apk files for the programs you wish to install to the device, then use a file manager (ES file manager, Astro, etc) and install them. You need to enable the option to allow installation of apps from unknown sources (Settings -> Security).
You'll have to try with your own files to see what works best for you as a player. Everyone has their preferences.
I don't know the answer to your questions about dice. You'll have to try to see.
I would rip blurays for N7 with different settings. Playing a 10Gb 1080P mkv with 5000 kbps bitrate + DTS is kind of an overkill for a 7" device.. Just rip them around 2000Mbit/s AC3 and you'll be satisfied for both size and video quality..
I know its not an answer to your question, but just wanted to give some advice..

I should have said in my original post, that I have already ripped lots of my movies as mkv, 10 gig etc for my western digital device. As far as players go BSplayer free will handle mkv's with DTS that's what I'm using works great. I don't know about NTSF being compatible. You can always copy some over to a usb drive formated in fat32...
