[Q]Is changing the MAC possible on nexus 7? - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
Its my first post (been watching the forum for a while), so i would like to say hello.
This month (as asus claims) the nexus 7 is arriving in my country. If it doesn't i'm willing to buy one in the UK.
Because of that i would like to ask a question to the owners of that device:
is changing the MAC address possible as stated in this guide:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1385577
Would anyone be willing to check that?
Or is there any other method i don't know?
And confirm that when you change the mac it appears in the router settings (connects to the network with the changed one)?
I would like to know that because WiFi in my school is limited to two devices, checked by MAC. I have already registered a phone and a laptop.
Greetings,
mlawnikPL

You could change the Mac address.
If you work for the FBI

That app is a front-end to the tutorial I gave in the op. But is anyone willing to actually TRY it and post results? That's what I'm asking for.

If you read through all the post on the topic you linked to you... you will notice that it is a Hit or Miss type of thing.
Meaning you might get it working, or you might not. Or you might get it working once, or the next time you try it will fail.
The method listed on that Topic is not a permanent solutions.. once your tablet/phone is reset/powered off the MAC will go back to the original.
Since its the hardware (the WiFi Card inside the device) that has the MAC address store in it.. and it clearly states in the that Topic you are "Spoofing" a MAC address.
Try something like Connectify ( http://www.connectify.me/ ) - you will need a Windows7 laptop/PC though.
Then you can connect all the devices you want..
Or un-register your phone, and register the tablet.. More than likely you will use the Table more often anyways, and your phone has a 3G/4G connection already.
Or wait and see if the 3G Nexus 7 hits your country... Or Order one from a US (or whatever country they are released to) and have it shipped to you.

This is an interesting scenario and yes it works
Keep in mind that you can't have two devices with same MAC address on the same LAN
With the MAC filter policy, you could either clone your either of the devices you have or, use a Bluetooth connectivity between your android phone and nexus 7 or some form of tethering

Yes, I forgot the Bluetooth option... connect to phone to your schools WiFi, the use a Bluetooth tether app to share connections...
Like hayodee said, spoofing a MAC won't allow you to connect all three device...
My question, why are you not trying this "spoofing" yourself..
Sent from my Nexus 7 using XDA Premium HD app

I am not trying this method because I don't have my N7 yet.
And I would not connect all three devices at once but one day I might take just phone and the other a tablet and a laptop, so then I would spoof the phone Mac...

Just rooted my Fire

Feels good. I've never rooted anything in my life until tonight. Nailed it first try, no hitches. Thanks to JCase and his buddies, a couple of guides with appropriate links, and a couple of video tuts on YouTube, I now have access to the entire Android market. Sweeter than a nice cold Fresca...I know there is no point to this post. I'm just excited and everyone I know is sleeping. Thanks for listening.
You should install the market now.

I'm just sitting here wondering why you'd get a Kindle, which almost depends on an internet connection, without wifi? But congrats on the root! It only took me a few hours... I had a few hiccups along the way haha.
Congratulations! It may be a pointless post but it is a hell of a lot nicer to see than another "I bricked my Kindle" thread, lol.

Can I just do that? Don't I have to pay extra for the wifi service? If so, I definitely will.
Haha I love some people so much, he knows how to use ADB to root his kindle, but he doesn't know that you can just connect a wifi router to your modem and have wifi. no it wont cost anything to put it on. It'd be like them charging you extra for having 2 computers connected to your Internet.

No, once the connection is there you can hook up a wireless router no problem. (In theory)

It is kinda funny to see someone buy a device which essentially needs WiFi to do most of its stuff, but...
While you can get a cheap wireless router, it is hard to go wrong with:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0037G2BMY
For <$8
Make your PC then a hotspot.
I have a bunch of these as friends like to bring their PC's over to get fixed and I then don't have to run a cable to them.

Guest Access - no one can connect but my google account

I was wondering if anyone else has been able to get more than one google account actually connected to their nexus q. We are trying one in our office and only my phone and tablet with my google account can connect it it. When we try with someone elses phones the nexus q app always says no devices found. Now if I do a factory reset it does show on the phone but once one person has connected and taken ownership none of the other phones can find the device or connect to it.
Any ideas? Searched everywhere and can't find anything on it.
Will try tomorrow and let you know.

I still can't get any guests to connect. Can you explain how you did this? What I have tried is I have a nexus s4g as the primary device and setup the q with it. I then took my hp touch pad with CM9 and was able to find the q with out any issues at all. Both have my same google account on it. Then we tried to connect some other android devices we have at the office but none of them could find the nexus q for some reason. They were all on the same network and all had at least ics running as their os. The devices tested were a Verizon galaxy nexus. An AT&T Samsung galaxy s2 and a tmobile galaxy s2 and finally an htc touch pro. None of those would ever find the device. We even tried adding my account to one of the other devices but that did not help. The only difference from my deviceses to the other test devices is mine are rooted but I doubt that would make a difference. Any ideas.
3 devices I tried are rooted one isn't. Two have the same Google account the other two are both different. Worked on all 4. Maybe try rebooting nexus q and re-set it up.. sometimes I have to repower my q as it doesn't start up by it self once in sleep mode... but that's because I don't use it too much.. I want to root it but want to see what Google will add to it first
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
Okay so after numerous times trying to get this working I just broke down and bought a new router. Simply plugged my current jack at the office into that and instead of using our offices wireless, connected the q to the new router and boom, now every one can connect.
So for sure there are some networking issues with the Q that needs to be worked out but hope this can help. I have sent Google the routers we were using in the office (cisco) so they can add that to their list of routers with issues. Definitely confirmed that the routers were fully open so who knows what was causing the issue.
Thanks again,
Joe

Decent nexus 7 anti theft app?

I'd like to install an anti theft app on my n7. I've got Where's My Droid on my phone, but the thing is, the nexus doesn't have a data signal to access its GPS location at the drop of a dime.... it would only be able to be tracked if it is currently connected to WiFi, right? If it wasn't connected to WiFi then there would be no way to track it that I can think of. Anyways, what are some good anti theft apps that you guys are using?
Another question, has any used Tablet Talk, or so,etching similar? Its an app that sync your phone and tablet together which allows text messages to be sent front your nexus, but it uses your mobile number. Are there any other apps out there like this? Would really love to hear about some experiences with Tablet Talk or similar apps so I know what I should purchase. Thanks in advance.

What is the point... besides a password how would a tracking app help. They will just wipe the tab anyway doesn't even need to be booted. If it's password protected its not going to connect to unknown networks anyway. So either way you look at it you lose it its gone. If you left it open counting on them to connect it good luck...lol if they are smart enough to steal it I'm pretty sure they understand how to do a factory reset.

You can install Cerberus as a system app and it will withstand a factory reset. However, if they decide to flash a new ROM you are screwed. But you are pretty much right about once you lose it is is gone since it has to be connected to WiFi to send back data.

I have Cerberus.. but it most likely will be useless... unless it is taken like at work where I already have Wi-Fi setup on it, it will never be able to phone home and the pattern lock will prevent the new owner from setting up a new access point without having to wipe the unit anyway because it will get locked out.
A phone is a different beast altogether.

Yea, phones are a different thing... not only do you have the opportunity to track but also they are tagged to a network. But a WiFi only tab... even with an autowifi app.. the chances of both apps running at the time stolen and connected to WiFi are really slim. Besides the fact that you couldn't go busting in a residence just because you knew it was in there......
+1 Cerberus good support too

Assuming that your tab has some sort of pin/pattern lock/face unlock protection and your Wi-Fi is always on, then there shouldn't be much problem for the auto-Wi-Fi app to connect and enable access for Cerberus. Mind you that wefi pro DOES start on boot.

I have Avast installed on my Nexus 7. Don't care for the AV, but it does have built in anti theft, where if your N7 is rooted, it can bury itself deep in the system and survive hard-resets. Not sure how well it does, and hope never to find out, but it looks alright. There are probably similar apps out there.
Avast here too. AV does seem to slow some things down some, I guess I'll turn it off. The "locate" feature works well with Google Voice number. Turns on your GPS then sends location to GV (on a PC). Only time I hope to need it is if I leave my Nexus somewhere and I need to remember where (hoping it wasn't stolen). I'm a bit paranoid since I recently had a phone stolen with no security software on it.

Passwords aren't going to get your tablet back. IMO, the biggest risk of losing a tablet is accidently leaving it someplace. I have a business card taped to the protective case of my Nexus and have the app "Android Lost" installed. If my tablet is found by an honest person, then they will call the number on the business card and all is well. If it is found by someone not so honest, the odds of them being sophisticated enough to know how to "wipe the tab" are slim to none. It is more likely that if they are stopped by a passwork, they'll just ditch the tab in the trash or try to "get a reward" by calling me. Without a password, they'll probably at least use it long enough to run down the battery. In that case I at least have a chance of locating it via "Android Lost".
edit: If I were a student, using my tablet "on campus" everyday, I might reconsider the risk. The "campus environment" probably is more conducive to actually having a tablet stolen.

Even if that were true, so what?
You are missing the point.
Okay. I'm at a conference and and look away and someone grabs my Nexus 7. I was using WiFi via my phone since I never use WiFi from unsecure sources. They run away and hours later turn it on. Password is required. They don't know it and after X number attempts the tablet is now locked.
The tablet is not going to connect to any WiFi near them because it is setup to not allow unsecure WiFi connections.
How is cerebrus going to help me find my Tablet ??? It won't, it can't. If they can't use the Tablet (its locked out now right), it doesn't matter if Cerebrus is on it or not.
On a device with 3G, We are talking about something totally different. and I use Android Lost for that. Works great and I know a couple people who found their phones with it, including one that didn't even have it installed when it was "acquired".... they had it installed via the play store and then took control of the device.
The tablet without 3G is not the same beast as it requires working WiFi to do anything. Can't phone home or do anything without it.
The best protection is my data and backing it up OFF the tablet on a regular basis so that if I break my tablet or it gets stolen, I can quickly rebuild a new one with my apps and data in a short time period.

I have a solution, sell it to..no give it to me. LOL
I have tethered the N7 countless times. You use the wifi to search out porto hotspot you create on your phone, whatever it may be. Then connect.
:cyclops:
The n7 is a WiFi only. Smartphones can tether because of their 2g/3g capability.

Nexus 7 is not a Wifi Device only, it also has a microUSB connector so it could tether via that one.
And anyway, even if it has wifi only and to be honest wouldn't have sense to tether to other wifi devices (since they could gather wifi from the primary sender..) but why they took us the option anyway? If I wanna, just for the lulz of it, block my smartphone from getting WiFi from the router, and do thethering from the nexus 7, why they have to cut out this option? :S

I'm assuming he means the ability to use USB Tethering (as in, provide Internet to a device or computer, over USB, from the Nexus 7 and a WiFi). A bit surprised people haven't really heard of this option, but it is indeed missing from the Nexus 7.

Exactly.. it seems that noone knows about tethering FROM TABLET TO PC/OTHERS, when it is clearly an option in some scenarios.
Thank you for confirming that its missing. What a deception..

Eh, doesn't really shock me. It doesn't really seem like a huge amount of people do that, at least compared to wifi tethering.
That being said, do tablets/phones normally have the option? Usually I see it having to be implemented after release by the community.
Edit: Opps, misread one of the links I put up.
Still some clarification other than "No tethering on Nexus 7" would've helped. There are multiple ways to do it.
Also, why not research before buying if it is such a big deal?

Non WiFi-only devices usually have it (my SGT7 had the option), can't really say if WiFi-only devices have it though.

OK I get what you're saying. But I fail to see in what instance I would want to tether (share the internet connection) from my N7 with another device via USB.
Would I tether from my N7 to my phone? My phone can use whatever WiFi my N7 is on. Not to mention my phone has 3G.
Would I tether from my N7 to my laptop? My laptop can use whatever WiFi my N7 is using.
Now, I could see the the reverse of both of those circumstances. If I had 3G but no WiFi, I would want to share the 3G from my phone with my N7. Or if my laptop was using an Ethernet connection and no WiFi was available, I would want to share the connection from my laptop to my N7.
I hope I'm just misinterpreting this whole thing and I'll be slapping my forehead when I understand, but from what I've read so far, that seems unlikely.

WOW ..
My only Question is WHY.. Nearly all if not all laptops in the past 10 years have had wifi built in. I think its not a option because it makes no sense to have another wifi capable device to usb tether a available wifi network when it can just get the signal itself . Likely stronger and more stable . faster then adding another hop thru data transfer .
My phone has usb tether built in with ICS .. You can use a app to enable what your looking for .I think pda net does it..
Good Luck People in here do understand what your asking . The confusion is WHY ...

That is pretty much it. Commonly I see it as "reverse tethering" where someone wants to use the computers internet connection on the phone via USB connection. Due to lack of wifi/cell data connectivity, or to save data on their plan.

Ah, I understand. I see how that has the potential to maybe be useful . But at it's best, it seems like a very limited application.

Yeah. Like espionage724 said, his SGT7 had it. I'm not entire sure, but I've never heard of stock android having this ability. I'd be willing to bet that the manufacturer put it in themselves.
Moral of the story: do your homework before buying.
I guess it would be useful if your wifi router was down so you could use your PC's internet access.
If implemented properly is should be faster for LAN file transfers (assuming you get good usb transfer speeds...obviously a PC on a gigabit LAN will crush wifi, so the usb 2 is the limiting factor...usb 2 is supposed to be a lot faster than wifi, but in practice, it does not always pan out).
I guess I could find a use for it. In our house 99% of the time only our tablets and phones use wifi. All of our fixed position devices are on a gigabit lan (media players, blueray player, HT recevier, wii, main PC, printer, even our laptop, which is really just the kitchen table PC now that we have a bunch of tablets). When I work from home I dock my work laptop on the LAN, and so does my wife. Wireless blows when there is a gigE jack nearby.
I've been trying to get reverse USB tether to work on the Nexus 7 with no luck

[Q] Constant Wifi drops at my wits end

Hello everyone first time joining xda; I have used the site a few times and I love it. I also created an account because of the wonderful community anyways; I seem to be having this really frustrating problem with my Verizon LG G2. I picked up the phone on black Friday and its been absolutely wonderful except for one issue, my WiFi drops signal constantly and I mean almost every 3-15 minutes but the catch is that I have used WiFi at my friends and by that I mean more than a one or two works great at theirs and not mine but at my house and it doesn't and I think this might be a router issue. But I have spent many hours trying to figure out what might be wrong it it helps my router is: Netgear model WNDR3700. I've tried just about everything and would like some smarter help. Thank you for reading!
Shameless self bump
First bump!
Having same issue but not as often.
If I use my htc sensation with vipers it's even worse. Even causing my router to reboot.
Se if u can extract logs from your router.

Maybe screenshot those and post them on here? Lol
My suggestion is to just get a new router. They're only 30 bucks if you get em used (I mean, NICE ones). I am somewhat router-savvy and I would recommend the D-Link DIR-655 as a replacement. It has OS-independent printer/HDD sharing, website URL blocking (great for blocking ads), time restrictions, logging, wireless N & good range... if you're lucky you'll find one in great condition for about $39 last I checked. Once I got one for $20 off ebay and it had some issues.. so don't do that I guess.
I know my suggestion doesn't directly answer your question but it will directly solve your problem. Hope this helps,

Thanks for posting but yeah all of those quick fixes I've tried also I checked for a router update and its up to date and I check the website its correct. The ****ty part is buying a new router is out of the question because I still live with my parents.

You're not using a static ip that is being used by 2 devices right? I did that when I first set mine up... I'm not the sharpest one.

Also, another dummy fix is checking which wireless standards you have selected. Surprisingly a lot of android phones are not compatible with independent Wireless-N, make sure you have set up a,b,g,n or b,g,n or even try straight g or straight b if those don't work. On top of that, try changing the wireless frequencies, that is very likely to be your problem.
