Just rooted my Fire - Kindle Fire General

Feels good. I've never rooted anything in my life until tonight. Nailed it first try, no hitches. Thanks to JCase and his buddies, a couple of guides with appropriate links, and a couple of video tuts on YouTube, I now have access to the entire Android market. Sweeter than a nice cold Fresca...I know there is no point to this post. I'm just excited and everyone I know is sleeping. Thanks for listening.

You should install the market now.

Hahaha. It's cool. I can't wait to browse it in a little bit. I've gotta wait til I get out and about to get to a hotspot, I've got no wifi at home only sh***y DSL. It's gonna be sweet.

If you have a laptop thats connected to dsl you could actually turn it into a hotspot

Unfortunately I do not. I am using a hardwired PC. I'm so anxious. I'm thinking about just going to McDonald's to get something to eat and use their wifi. Idk, probably just wait til later.

His stuff was easy to use, the part that freaked me out was, installing and using ADB and the SDK. Wasn't sure I did it right, but I sure did. I'll second that, cheers for JCase.

I'm just sitting here wondering why you'd get a Kindle, which almost depends on an internet connection, without wifi? But congrats on the root! It only took me a few hours... I had a few hiccups along the way haha.

Congratulations! It may be a pointless post but it is a hell of a lot nicer to see than another "I bricked my Kindle" thread, lol.

I have wifi at my college, my fiancee's and my buddy's house. I mainly read my comics on it. I mostly use the internet at home. BUT I do use the wifi when I can. I plan on getting an upgrade on my internet service, hopefully sooner than later.

Can I just do that? Don't I have to pay extra for the wifi service? If so, I definitely will.

Haha I love some people so much, he knows how to use ADB to root his kindle, but he doesn't know that you can just connect a wifi router to your modem and have wifi. no it wont cost anything to put it on. It'd be like them charging you extra for having 2 computers connected to your Internet.

I just didn't think it would work as I'm only running like 78k a a sec. No need to be negative.

Aaaaawww yeeeeaahhh....
Android market works perfectly. Got GoLauncher up and running, it's a little kinky but works well for the most part. Got my Wunderlist and Gmail apps. All is great.

No, once the connection is there you can hook up a wireless router no problem. (In theory)

It is kinda funny to see someone buy a device which essentially needs WiFi to do most of its stuff, but...
While you can get a cheap wireless router, it is hard to go wrong with:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0037G2BMY
For <$8
Make your PC then a hotspot.
I have a bunch of these as friends like to bring their PC's over to get fixed and I then don't have to run a cable to them.

It's best to learn yourself, because that way you know what happens to your phone.
I no longer root other people's phone or mod it in any way. There is always that .00001% chance the phone would brick. I would feel horrible if I broke somebody's phone.
Not to be mean either but people come back to me for "Tech support" Blaming me that there phone isn't working properly because I "Rooted it" for them.
Also.. it's really easy to do. I mean all you have to do is:
-Get samsung drivers
-Put phone in USB Diagnostic Mode
-Run the Noobnl one click root.
Your done.
Like Pjames said.. Believe in yourself and have confidence.
Bomix is right. And its SUPER easy. If you have windows 7 you might have a smig harder time. I had to run the program 7 times to get it to finally connect and do it. But that just required double clicking it to try again. Also restaring the phone and then running the program when you see the sprint logo worked for me. But anyways, you really can't get easier than this, when I had to root my nexus one it took me forever with all the software, and dos cmd commands.

Yes, but a much, much better solution is here. Infrastructure mode, and nicely integrated into the Wireless & Networks section of the Settings app. I've installed and tested it on the MixUp kernel, and it works like a champ.

So once rooted, you don't need a special setting/program to tether, you can just use tethering programs and assume it is free?
In WM there's always the settings/program that I was paranoid about having wrong.
No... you don't use the Sprint hotspot app. This mod integrates a wireless Access Point feature/capability directly into the phone.
After installation, a new item appears in menu->settings->Wireless & networks -- "Mobile AP".
Select it, and turn it on with the checkbox. Wait while it configures everything in about a minute, then look for it with any wireless device and connect same as any AP. The device will now have internet access via your Epic.
This solution beats any other simply on account of the Infrastruture Mode implementation; however, the tight integration directly into the Android system beats the app approach too, for my tastes.
The SSID, DHCP server address range, and other wifi router/AP parameters are configurable.

just keep in mind this mod only works on stock/odexed ROMs, which if all you are doing is rooting, you have. if that is too much then you can get wifi tether but i think the market version still doesnt work on the Epic (correct me if thats changed).
the working version is here: http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/
but you have to go to settings > applications > check unknown sources to install a file downloaded from non-market source.

As others have stated, you really should do it yourself and learn. Unless of course you dont ever plan on getting another phone that you plan to root. Most of the guides on XDA offer wasy instructions and have (some) members that will be patient and offer you assistance if you need it.
It really isnt that difficult with the guides and instructions some have posted. Look here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=798067. My 12 year old nephew followed that post, and with minimal questions rooted his phone on his own without any issues.

Droid 2 Non-Ad Hoc tether?

Hi guys,
I've got a few devices that won't connect to Ad-Hoc network's and I was curious if the Droid 2 was capable of sharing Infrastructure wifi (not ad-hoc). I believe this requires extra hardware on the phone and wasn't sure of the details. If the device does support it, anyone know of tether software that can do this?

Really appreciate it man, exactly what I was looking for. I got a quick question though. That looks a lot like the stock app that you are supposed to pay monthly for. Should I be worried here? (I know tethering is normally against the rules but I felt more comfortable using a custom app).

It is the stock app but it's been hacked to not charge you for anything. The hack has been put out by Team Black Hat who are pretty smart people so I trust it won't screw you. If you are afraid use it lightly then get your bill and see if any charges accrue.

http://www.androidpolice.com/2011/1...locking-tethering-apps-in-the-android-market/
There are a million ways to get around this of course: market hacks, downloading the apps from other sources, side-loading... they're included with most roms... blah blah blah.
Just bringing this to your attention in case you were trying to d/l it from the market and it's not showing up. Now you know why
Just checked the market and looks like you're right. No PdaNet. No Easy Tether. Can still get Easy Tether on Amazon's app store however.
This will only effect the NOOBS.

Sent from my LG-P999 using XDA Premium App
Technically we agreed not to use these, but still. Getting around it is so trivial, and yes, this might trip up a few noobs, but chances are if you're that nooby you wouldn't have a need for, or even realize that, tethering is an option.
Add that all up, and it seems like the only thing this move can get you is bad PR/karma.
You may as well be "cool","allow" it, and play the "other carriers try to tell you how you can use your phone and limit your access to certain apps" card, cause it's happening either way.
Sprint can and will cancel service with high data usage.

I like that one better. Its not an adhoc connection like the tether apps, but an actual hotspot that your computer actively looks for and can become a preferred network. Its just kewler.

Really only applies on your phone, as in, the data your phone is using. Tethering is a whole new realm. Sprint can tell if you're tethering or using your phone, so if you have a large amount of data through tethering, they'll flag you for it.
I think they're putting limits on tethering plans now, somewhere around 5GB or so I thought.

They can make you pay for the use of *their* tether app, but I'd like to see evidence that they can tell if your using the likes of a rooted phone with Wireless Tether. I think of this situation the way I viewed using a wired/wireless switch off your home broadband ISP back in the day. For me, Charter only allowed one registered MAC address to the cable modem, and there was some FUD spreading around that you'd get "busted" for using a switch to provide service to multiple computers. Of course there was no way to tell unless they get really invasive. Similar deal here. Hopefully restrictions on phone tethering will seem just as crazy in a few years.
I'm using TWC isp over wifi right now & its not showing up? WTF how is it that its not showing up over wifi?
Edit. I see the one by open gradin. But not the one by Muller

Actually they can't. The data logger only kicks in if you pay for the Hotspot app. They can't tell the difference if you are tethering or downloading tons of movies to your phone.

"Unlimited data" only means that you aren't going to get billed for going over x amount.
It doesn't mean Sprint just has to lay back and take it from someone who's costing them money to have as a customer, tethering or not. They reserve the right to tell any of us to beat it.

[Q] Evo 4g w/o cellular connection?

So the whole family converted to iPhones last month.
I was going to sell my Evo, but while shopping for a smallish Android tablet, I had the idea of using my Evo as a tiny tablet. I think the Evo offers pretty much exactly what I was looking for albeit in a slightly smaller package than I wanted. However, it is in my possession now and does not require buying anything.
Is it possible to run w/o a cellular connection or is Sprint going to somehow lock me down?
If so, can someone please point me in the right direction to do so?
If you disconnect cellular service to the EVO it will work perfectly over wifi. My kids have a G1 that is only connected via wifi. Everything works from the market to talk to Google voice. Just tether from your iPhone to have all that on the go.

[Guide] Enable Wifi 5GHz Stock ICS

I noticed that I could not connect to 5GHz after updating to stock ICS. I mentioned this before in a thread and wanted to share with everyone else here. This requires root!
This is credited to Entropy512, I used his guide for the sgs2 found here.
I use Es File Explorer found on the Play market
1. Navigate to /system/etc/wifi/
2. Open nvram_net.txt and change the ccode from GB to ALL.
3. Save
4. Reboot
Pretty straight forward and should be easy for everyone.
For P7500 users and international firmware, check to verify nvram_net.txt_us ccode=US
Thanks.. working so far but i have to test it on 5GHz Access Point.

Thanks for this info.
This is, so far, the only reason I want to root my tab.
My tab works great. No problems with YouTube or anything else.
However, I have an Amazon Prime membership, and streaming videos is a chore.
I can get it to work reasonably well with some videos, but most are choppy, etc., the usual stuff.
I'm pretty sure it's due to the wireless access I have, an Apple Airport Express. It works fine for everything except Amazon videos.
The range is quite limited, and I think it's just not quite up to the task of streaming movies (a shame really, because it's otherwise been solid as a rock since I installed it in March. It was also a snap to set up even for me, who knows nothing about wireless).
I'm guessing that the new model Express, which has both 2.4 and 5, will give me the extra ooomph I need.
If not, I may have to bite the bullet and get a new router. I hesitate because the wired router I have works great.
Thanks again.
