It doesnt look easy...Could someone local please root my phone for me
its easy. i mean real easy. i did it with no problems. read the wiki. i was scared at first but with all the info thats in the wiki it was a snap. i was rooted and had clockwork installed in less than 20 minutes. you can do it. just trust yourself

Lol...I just want free hotspot..all that clockwork talk is over my head.
It's best to learn yourself, because that way you know what happens to your phone.
I no longer root other people's phone or mod it in any way. There is always that .00001% chance the phone would brick. I would feel horrible if I broke somebody's phone.
Not to be mean either but people come back to me for "Tech support" Blaming me that there phone isn't working properly because I "Rooted it" for them.
Also.. it's really easy to do. I mean all you have to do is:
-Get samsung drivers
-Put phone in USB Diagnostic Mode
-Run the Noobnl one click root.
Your done.

Bomix is right. And its SUPER easy. If you have windows 7 you might have a smig harder time. I had to run the program 7 times to get it to finally connect and do it. But that just required double clicking it to try again. Also restaring the phone and then running the program when you see the sprint logo worked for me. But anyways, you really can't get easier than this, when I had to root my nexus one it took me forever with all the software, and dos cmd commands.

once rooted,
You can use Wifi Tether, look it up on the market it's free.
Craiglist might help. I know ppl mod phones for like 20 bucks on craigslist. Try that out, although rooting is not hard at all if u don't mind being ripped off then try that out.

Yes, but a much, much better solution is here. Infrastructure mode, and nicely integrated into the Wireless & Networks section of the Settings app. I've installed and tested it on the MixUp kernel, and it works like a champ.
There's a few apps that pop up in the market for wifi tether. Which one should we get?

So once rooted, you don't need a special setting/program to tether, you can just use tethering programs and assume it is free?
In WM there's always the settings/program that I was paranoid about having wrong.
No... you don't use the Sprint hotspot app. This mod integrates a wireless Access Point feature/capability directly into the phone.
After installation, a new item appears in menu->settings->Wireless & networks -- "Mobile AP".
Select it, and turn it on with the checkbox. Wait while it configures everything in about a minute, then look for it with any wireless device and connect same as any AP. The device will now have internet access via your Epic.
This solution beats any other simply on account of the Infrastruture Mode implementation; however, the tight integration directly into the Android system beats the app approach too, for my tastes.
The SSID, DHCP server address range, and other wifi router/AP parameters are configurable.

just keep in mind this mod only works on stock/odexed ROMs, which if all you are doing is rooting, you have. if that is too much then you can get wifi tether but i think the market version still doesnt work on the Epic (correct me if thats changed).

but you have to go to settings > applications > check unknown sources to install a file downloaded from non-market source.

As others have stated, you really should do it yourself and learn. Unless of course you dont ever plan on getting another phone that you plan to root. Most of the guides on XDA offer wasy instructions and have (some) members that will be patient and offer you assistance if you need it.
It really isnt that difficult with the guides and instructions some have posted. Look here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=798067. My 12 year old nephew followed that post, and with minimal questions rooted his phone on his own without any issues.

You could easily get this from the Market. Put your phone on airplane mode, then connect to the Internet using wifi. Search for pdanet in the Market and it will show up.

The only problem is that it can only be use for one device at a time and it only works on Desktops and Laptops. Which means, no iPad, iPod, Xbox, PS3, etc. Barnacle is better

no im actually pretty smart, are you dumb?
i never suggested that you use PDANET to download 50gb a month with your torrents, however there have been people served with tethering warning emails who have not even exceeded 2gb so please refrain from making bold assumptions, you could get caught using barnacle with a low usage just the same as pdanet except for that barnacle does not have hide tether usage as a feature
and yes i agree there is a downside that you can only use it on one device at a time and only certain devices, but everyones needs are different, if you are only using your pc or laptop and want take extra precautions to not lose your unlimited plan then use pdanet over barnacle, i personally only need my laptop connected, and realistically you could create an adhoc network with your PC that you tether with if you would like multiple devices connected at the same time
please if you are not here to contribute, just go away i dont want this thread clogged up with a ton of misinformation from a bunch of misinformed people with poor reading comprehension, i was just making a suggestion here, if you dont like it stfu and gtfo

Yeah thats why I've gone over 10gb for the past 5 months and have never gotten an Email. But if you know how its working then you would know that they cant actually see that you are tethering. Its just from data usages from how people have been reporting it. Plus PDANet is a pain to use. I have to have the App on all of the devices I want to connect to? It has to be USB? and only one device???? thats too much to give away when I could be using my custom APN or Barnacle tether.....

are you implying that someone who watches tons of HD quality vids and creates high GB per month usage is going to receive a tethering notice? we all don't really know how its working, so please refrain from talking out your butthole when no one really knows the facts
if its truth as opposed to misinformation, then please cite sources, otherwise youre just talking out your butthole once again, til you can show your evidence, you might as well have made up everything you said

ive never used an iphone, so i have to ask, if you are using a jailbroken phone with an app that is not the standard iphone att tethering app, why would it register under the iphones att statistics? i would be much more satisfied with an article or some other more credible source than a pic of a random iphone statistic with your anecdotal experience attached to it (unreliable narrator problem)

Because tethering Apps are shortcuts for APNs really. So the tethering counter counts data going through a tethering APN. Therefore any tethering app that is a APN shortcut (MyWi) would be counted because it goes through the tethering APN.....
So are you going to explain how to talk through my butthole, or are you going to ignore that and look stupid for saying it?

Like I said before all u gave me was a pic with a likely story to go with it, please cite a credible source, I have no evidence that the story behind the pic is true, I mean why do u even have a pic of ur friends usage, its awfully convenient and I like to get my facts straight before I buy into something and forums I've learned are breeding grounds for huge amounts of misinformation, honestly u just seem to be trolling here so pardon me if I don't just buy ur anonymous pic with unverified story

I don't know how they do it that's the point, no one does, att has not disclosed how they do it in order to avoid to having people figure ways around it, so since we are all just guessing at it, I suggest we err on the side of caution hence why I created this thread to inform people,not to attract trolls like moths to a flame, and for the record I try to maintain my usage around 2gb to be safe because u could be right although I believe I read somewhere that someone with low usage was sent a warning as well so that is where my doubt comes from, truthfully I haven't even looked into how pdanet is hiding tethering usage exactly or if it actually works, but like I said I believe in erring on the side of caution

AT&T is working there way down the list of people with high data usage or whatever they look for and they are emailing them.
If that is true, my time is coming up.
I'll remember to PM you when/if I get an email from AT&T regarding unauthorized tethering usage.

First, go read the forum rules. I would say re-read them, but chances are they weren't read at all.
Second, Here is the link I found, it's in something called the Android Market...not too sure what that is, but it's $1.65.

Indeed it works. It's an extremely easy setup to change the PS3 controller's MAC address to point to the Xoom. It works quite well, but I do not see much use for it really. There aren't many major games that I would use it on. Possibly the Zenonia series, but I've been done with them for awhile now since I beat them so many times.
Word of advice though. It's a good idea if you have a spare PS3 controller that you don't ever use. Reason being: This setup changes your controller's MAC address, and it will need to be re-synced with the PS3 through the USB cable if you ever want to use it there again. Just a useful heads up if you are a frequent PS3 gamer as myself.
i have a ps3 controller and no ps3
use it connected with USB HOST connection and with fpse for playing resident evil - was fairly impressed with that - but wireless connection would be better obviously

You need an att tethering plan to use webtop.... I don't know what you are talking about. There is a reason why xda is becoming more and more irrelevant as time goes on and developers are choosing a different website. It's people like you guys who just need to one up other posters who are causing this. There are some great people on here, then there are you guys. That's the reason why the rootzwiki is becoming the new standard. Oh and I should sell my atrix cause I asked a question about webtop? That clearly means I have no idea what I'm doing right? That's a joke but thanks for the suggestion

I have read that webtop should work when you are on wifi, but that's just what I've heard since I don't use it. If you're trying to use it while on AT&T's data network then, yes, you need tethering but there are tethering and webtop hacks galore in the "noob" thread that is stickied at the top of the "General" forum.

Also, try not to take anything personally. This is an internet forum, just let it roll off your back.
Just looked over the sticky and it has a link to a cwm installable webtop file that I already have. Nothing about disabling att from verifying the tethering plan required to use the webtop on 3G. Webtop works fine on wifi... And before gingerbread, there used to be a way to get it to work without a tethering plan. That is why I asked this "n00b" question that nobody seems to have an answer for.

Have you tried the "Entitlement" mod (enabling tethering)? It should be the one right above or below the Webtop link.

Also, like I've said, you can't take things personally on the internet, but if I can give some advice. Try to be more descriptive in your comments especially when starting an entire thread. Include things like what "mods" you have already used, and maybe include what ROM you're using and what resources you have already searched through for answers, you could even go as far as describing the steps you are using when encountering the issue. All of this helps the rest of us help you. Your original post "looks" like a "noob" question and that's like blood in the water for the sharks.

OP asked a valid question and didn't deserve to be noob-bashed. I have the same issue. I have done the "entitlement" hack using the SQLLite Editor to set the "Entitlement Check" field to "0", and I am able to use my Atrix as a mobile hotspot without a tethering plan.
However, when I attempt to use Firefox on the Lapdock while connected via 3G (WiFi off), a popup appears saying "Verifying AT&T account status for webtop...". Then, after a few seconds, it fails and another dialog pops up saying "The Firefox browser requires a Wi-Fi connection or appropriate data plan. Please use Wi-Fi or call AT&T Customer Service at 1-800-331-0500 to add the appropriate data plan to your account"
Any help would be appreciated.
Try this and see if it works. Make sure you have done the entitlement hack and while connected to the webtop turn on the mobile hotspot on your phone and then go into your networks and choose the tether apn.
I tried something in that nature and was browsing firefox on my phones data. I'll try again in the morning and see if that's what I did.

Is it considered tethering if instead of using the full browser firefox, that requires a tethering plan, to instead use a browser (such as Dolphin HD) INSIDE of the phone module app on the webtop... since it's actually using your phone's apps instead of firefox?

Thanks dmbrown81, that totally worked! I still get the nagging messages from the Webtop about needing a tethering plan, but if I just turn on WiFi Tethering while the phone is docked, Firefox will work fine! Brilliant!

You might try turning off the "Mot mobile device extensions" addon and see what happens.

Obviously that would never be detected, but ATT does consider it tethering. Total BS if you ask me, all the doc is is an external screen/keyboard/pad/battery, it is in no way a seperate system.
The odd thing is that while using a StarHub prepaid sim in Singapore on my unlocked ATT Atrix it doesn't do that check, only when I use my ATT sim.

Thanks everyone for suggesting the "hotspot" trip. I am curious as to why this needs to be done is we are using the entitlement hack. Does anyone know why this is or is the just the way to get around having to pay twice for data? Also, have you guys noticed a big hit in your battery life when using the hotspot tethering? I'm just happy that this solution works because I got the lapdock just for this reason.
There is something in the ATT firmware that recognizes when the phone is using an ATT sim and disables data connections to the webtop environment. The whole time I was in Singapore using a StarHub Green prepaid sim my phone never did that "Verifying account blablablah..." when I docked the phone in my LapDock, as soon as I docked it I could start using Firefox.
An interesting note: the phone disables all data connections for a moment when it does this check. I noticed it because Pandora died on me one day when I was listening and I docked my phone. I watched the connectivity arrows on the H+ icon the next time I docked my phone and they went away for a few seconds just as that toaster notification popped up. Even with the Entitlement Mod this happens.
Hotspot tethering will kill your battery life, although that battery life is augmented by the lapdock. I'm pretty sure you can turn tethering off once you've started up Firefox and are browsing away. Don't ask me how I know, a little bird told me.
No, using apps inside the phone view isn't considered tethering. You can use the stock browser inside there without doing anything. If att calls using a non-stock browser tethering, pitch a fit and tell them to piss up a rope.
And regarding my snark earlier: I think a lot of the people who have been here for a while get tired of seeing threads like "Can I haz root on my phone OMG I'm a noob" when we remember discussing the same subject multiple times in the past. I know this particular question has been asked and answered before. I found it ironic that you were being chided by someone who had < 10 posts.
tl;dr - non-ATT sims work without mods, ATT sim data connection gets disabled, this has been covered.

Also, it's USB and not wireless which most people want. Seems more of the same to me. There are a large number of apps on the market doing the same thing already. Not a huge leap forward, but more a very small step in my opinion.

Until I know "exactly" what causes carriers to raise tethering flags, I would proceed very cautiously with this...

Are you guys stupid. This has been done but no one has released a free easy to use undetectable tethering. All you guys want to do is complain. Just once come in here and say good job! Or well done!. All you XDA users do is complain when people are trying to help others. I love how this place works. $hit on the hand that feeds you.

Oh, and I personally have thanked many, many people in XDA for their contributions, and sent beer money too. Thankfully, you have not been one of those people!
I was reading about this app yesterday.. Just the fact that its wired makes it undesirable to me.
The one most important thing about this app has been overlooked in this thread!! ROOT IS NOT REQUIRED!
So If you dont have root then check out this app! If you do have root, then WiFi Tether is obviously a better choice because it does not require a cable. Also I have been using WiFi Tether for over a year and never been "detected" by Att, so it must also be a "undetectable" app right?.
