[Guide] Enable Wifi 5GHz Stock ICS - Galaxy Tab 10.1 General

I noticed that I could not connect to 5GHz after updating to stock ICS. I mentioned this before in a thread and wanted to share with everyone else here. This requires root!
This is credited to Entropy512, I used his guide for the sgs2 found here.
I use Es File Explorer found on the Play market
1. Navigate to /system/etc/wifi/
2. Open nvram_net.txt and change the ccode from GB to ALL.
3. Save
4. Reboot
Pretty straight forward and should be easy for everyone.
For P7500 users and international firmware, check to verify nvram_net.txt_us ccode=US

Thanks.. working so far but i have to test it on 5GHz Access Point.
Will reprot later...

Thanks for this info.
This is, so far, the only reason I want to root my tab.
My tab works great. No problems with YouTube or anything else.
However, I have an Amazon Prime membership, and streaming videos is a chore.
I can get it to work reasonably well with some videos, but most are choppy, etc., the usual stuff.
I'm pretty sure it's due to the wireless access I have, an Apple Airport Express. It works fine for everything except Amazon videos.
The range is quite limited, and I think it's just not quite up to the task of streaming movies (a shame really, because it's otherwise been solid as a rock since I installed it in March. It was also a snap to set up even for me, who knows nothing about wireless).
I'm guessing that the new model Express, which has both 2.4 and 5, will give me the extra ooomph I need.
If not, I may have to bite the bullet and get a new router. I hesitate because the wired router I have works great.
Thanks again.

The steps should be similar. The information was originally pulled from my old phone and the files were essentially the same. Pretty much need to make the change and save the files.

Since it did not help, you will need to inquire in your device section since this is for the first gen Galaxy Tab 10.1 (P75xx series). It might require more than the changes I posted for this tab.

Thanks. I go there.

Lol...I just want free hotspot..all that clockwork talk is over my head.
It's best to learn yourself, because that way you know what happens to your phone.
I no longer root other people's phone or mod it in any way. There is always that .00001% chance the phone would brick. I would feel horrible if I broke somebody's phone.
Not to be mean either but people come back to me for "Tech support" Blaming me that there phone isn't working properly because I "Rooted it" for them.
Also.. it's really easy to do. I mean all you have to do is:
-Get samsung drivers
-Put phone in USB Diagnostic Mode
-Run the Noobnl one click root.
Your done.
Like Pjames said.. Believe in yourself and have confidence.
Bomix is right. And its SUPER easy. If you have windows 7 you might have a smig harder time. I had to run the program 7 times to get it to finally connect and do it. But that just required double clicking it to try again. Also restaring the phone and then running the program when you see the sprint logo worked for me. But anyways, you really can't get easier than this, when I had to root my nexus one it took me forever with all the software, and dos cmd commands.

You can use Wifi Tether, look it up on the market it's free.

Yes, but a much, much better solution is here. Infrastructure mode, and nicely integrated into the Wireless & Networks section of the Settings app. I've installed and tested it on the MixUp kernel, and it works like a champ.
There's a few apps that pop up in the market for wifi tether. Which one should we get?

So once rooted, you don't need a special setting/program to tether, you can just use tethering programs and assume it is free?
In WM there's always the settings/program that I was paranoid about having wrong.
No... you don't use the Sprint hotspot app. This mod integrates a wireless Access Point feature/capability directly into the phone.
After installation, a new item appears in menu->settings->Wireless & networks -- "Mobile AP".
Select it, and turn it on with the checkbox. Wait while it configures everything in about a minute, then look for it with any wireless device and connect same as any AP. The device will now have internet access via your Epic.
This solution beats any other simply on account of the Infrastruture Mode implementation; however, the tight integration directly into the Android system beats the app approach too, for my tastes.
The SSID, DHCP server address range, and other wifi router/AP parameters are configurable.

just keep in mind this mod only works on stock/odexed ROMs, which if all you are doing is rooting, you have. if that is too much then you can get wifi tether but i think the market version still doesnt work on the Epic (correct me if thats changed).
the working version is here: http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/
but you have to go to settings > applications > check unknown sources to install a file downloaded from non-market source.

As others have stated, you really should do it yourself and learn. Unless of course you dont ever plan on getting another phone that you plan to root. Most of the guides on XDA offer wasy instructions and have (some) members that will be patient and offer you assistance if you need it.
It really isnt that difficult with the guides and instructions some have posted. Look here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=798067. My 12 year old nephew followed that post, and with minimal questions rooted his phone on his own without any issues.

hopefully someone can get there hands on the APK and see if they can get it working on the Xoom
it's not going to happen.
yeah its not going to happen as this Netflix specifically works with Qualcomm snapdragon chipsets for its drm and probably decoding to. It has been cracked to get working on other snapdragon phones but no Tegra 2 device works with it. You'll just have to wait.
That apk that disabled the device check indeed does work on the tegra 2 chipset on my droid X2 so you would think it would be possible on the xoom as well some how. I tried that same apk on the xoom but get the error message that it isn't supported on this device. Has to be possible I'd think though.
My TF had a firmware update over the weekend and NetFlix does show up in the Market now and I was able to download it. However, it still wont stream the content. I am not sure why or what causes the Market to allow access to a Tegra2 device but it is there...

Here is a netflix apk that works just fine on my wifi Xoom, I think this one was orinigally a modded version for the Dell Streak 7 (Terga chipset) and it just happens to work on the Xoom as well. I tested it on a 3g tether, ( it was grainy but what do you expect at 250k?) and on high speed broadband where it performed really well.

But why would we need a modded version now that the official apk runs great on the Xoom? I downloaded the official version from the post here in the Xoom forum under Xoom Themes and Apps http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1177955 and it works great. Hell I even installed it on my x10 and it works on that too.
By the way, I tested this apk on my xoom tethered to my x10 and was watching Speed Grapher with a crystal clear image. Pretty speedy load time too with no buffering.

I'm pretty pumped about this. I live in Vietnam and pay for a VPN service (StrongVPN). Might be worth your while if you like netflix as much as I do. I'm happy to report netflix works for me now.
Strange, it won't work for me. I still have it installed from when it was briefly available a month or so back, but it still says my device isn't supported, won't stream, won't update, and won't find it in the market to re-download. That's with the FOTA that was just released in the US this morning.
...and keyboard lag is maybe slightly better, but still noticeable.
where did you guys download netflix program? I can not find it on the market.
I too cannot find it in the market...any hints on where you found it?
As for using Netflix from outside the US, I'm in the VI, I've used Hide My Ass VPN to get Netflix and other services that wouldn't let us stream content since we aren't in the US for quite some time with excellent results. I even posted instructions on how to get a Linksys E3000 router to connect to the service so all clients appear to be cominig from the states on my blog at Blendblog.net. Hope this helps!

Yup, a friend/co-worker downloaded the update and his Netflix is now working. Can't want to get home and try mine. This may be the nail in the Galaxy Tab 10.1's coffin... Netflix was the only thing that was keeping me from returning the Galaxy Tab 10.1 and keeping the Transformer.

UPDATE:
Okay i downloaded it, installed it, and it works pretty well. A cinch to set up. Streaming works well -- I only streamed a video though over 3g, the quality was good -- comparable too SubSonic, however there are no settings to control the quality of the feed -- with subsonic, you can at least adjust the quality to get better picture or better streaming- depending on your preference.
I'll still use both -- since SubSonic gives me access to my library anywhere without the need of a mobile phone.
--------------------------------------------
I'll give this a shot --
for streaming from my PC now I use SubSonic... it works pretty well.. however the controls when streaming video is tough, since it converts everything to flash on the go.
Works for me. Wish it worked in both directions though.
You can get the newest version 1.1.1 from here: http://goo.gl/Fp2eB
This is the current version and the device check has been disabled. We even have a 1.1.1 version with working rotation.
Zumocast has horrible customer service/support, by the way.
I had it for my iPhone a while back. Lots of people complained about a certain issue on their forum and today, 3 years later, still no fix.
They would constantly ask for logs but nothing ever got done.

It is kinda funny to see someone buy a device which essentially needs WiFi to do most of its stuff, but...
While you can get a cheap wireless router, it is hard to go wrong with:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0037G2BMY
For <$8
Make your PC then a hotspot.
I have a bunch of these as friends like to bring their PC's over to get fixed and I then don't have to run a cable to them.
