[Q] Constant Wifi drops at my wits end - G2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello everyone first time joining xda; I have used the site a few times and I love it. I also created an account because of the wonderful community anyways; I seem to be having this really frustrating problem with my Verizon LG G2. I picked up the phone on black Friday and its been absolutely wonderful except for one issue, my WiFi drops signal constantly and I mean almost every 3-15 minutes but the catch is that I have used WiFi at my friends and by that I mean more than a one or two works great at theirs and not mine but at my house and it doesn't and I think this might be a router issue. But I have spent many hours trying to figure out what might be wrong it it helps my router is: Netgear model WNDR3700. I've tried just about everything and would like some smarter help. Thank you for reading!

Shameless self bump
First bump!

Having same issue but not as often.
If I use my htc sensation with vipers it's even worse. Even causing my router to reboot.
Se if u can extract logs from your router.

Maybe screenshot those and post them on here? Lol
My suggestion is to just get a new router. They're only 30 bucks if you get em used (I mean, NICE ones). I am somewhat router-savvy and I would recommend the D-Link DIR-655 as a replacement. It has OS-independent printer/HDD sharing, website URL blocking (great for blocking ads), time restrictions, logging, wireless N & good range... if you're lucky you'll find one in great condition for about $39 last I checked. Once I got one for $20 off ebay and it had some issues.. so don't do that I guess.
I know my suggestion doesn't directly answer your question but it will directly solve your problem. Hope this helps,

Thanks for posting but yeah all of those quick fixes I've tried also I checked for a router update and its up to date and I check the website its correct. The ****ty part is buying a new router is out of the question because I still live with my parents.

You're not using a static ip that is being used by 2 devices right? I did that when I first set mine up... I'm not the sharpest one.

Contact the support of your router..
Maby there is a fw upgrade avaliable. Sadly for me there are non. And it's a 4g router provided by my isp...

Also, another dummy fix is checking which wireless standards you have selected. Surprisingly a lot of android phones are not compatible with independent Wireless-N, make sure you have set up a,b,g,n or b,g,n or even try straight g or straight b if those don't work. On top of that, try changing the wireless frequencies, that is very likely to be your problem.

Skype on Wifi?

Is there some way to "trick" skype into running over wifi instead of just 3g? It's annoying to have to turn off wifi and kill more battery when I have a perfectly good internet connection nearby. I remember there being tweaks like this available for the iphone and wondered if there's something similar available or in the works.
**Note: I wasn't sure whether to put this in the apps/themes section or development since it can fit in either, so I apologize in advance if there's any issue with this thread location
It should just work over wifi if you turn 3G off. Not sure what you mean about turning wifi off to use it on wifi?
Also, this would belong in general i don't know how this would relate to development at all...

If you had an Incredible on Verizon you'd know that they restrict Skype usage to their data network, and that when opening it you must first disable wifi. And it can relate to development because there might need to be a workaround that needs to be "developed", which should be easier with root access I'd imagine.

I do actually have an incredible on Verizon seeing as that's the only network for this phone...
I misunderstood your wording for switching on and off the mobile network and wifi network. Just booted up skype mobile and noticed the message you were talking about,
"Skype mobile does not currently work on WiFi and requires witching to a Verizon Wireless data network connection. This may affect other apps using a WiFi connection."
That's pretty lame. Haven't heard any workarounds for that so far.

Lol no I haven't, I downloaded it and used it once but since it doesn't support video I saw no real use for it.
Edit: Found some more information on the situation at hand - http://www.dslreports.com/shownews/Verizon-Skype-Client-Apparently-Disables-Android-WiFi-107895
Thanks for the article. It sounds weird though about there being a glitch, kinda like the GPS issues on the pre plus with verizon. I don't get why the iphone can do would over both wifi and 3g but us android users are left in the dust. Hopefully this exclusivity expires soon and we get a fully functional client. So much for "Droid does" I guess

Compatible portable wifi booster

My thorough search for a compatible wifi booster has left me empty handed, and with a headache.
I am a paramedic, and am usually never sitting still, but when I do I would rather not have to park my rig on the router to get a signal.
Everybody knows the wifi signal is weak on our A500, is there a compatible antenna or booster that would allow me to get a decent wifi signal? Little side note, it would need to be portable, and slightly compact.
Thanks in advance

This is as good an option as you have. Sorry wish there was more....
No usb type antennas ? I do not have any knowledge on soldering nor do I want to mess up my tablet trying to figure it out.

In a word, nope.
Of course I don't know everything and am quite unqualified at a lot of this kind of stuff. So your solution may still be out there.
That said. If you find a better solution. I am certain that there are many of us that look forward to hearing about it. So don't forget to share.
Working solution..
Here at our home we have over 1acre lot.. its very deep and not so wide . but we have a Gazebo type structure about 400 feet past our back deck. our router is in the basement its a a average price netgear.. I bought a netgear router . that can be set in repeater mode.. this router we have will find all wifi signals and boost them.. I have used it on Construction sites as well. in a similar fashion from my work van to boost the 3g from our work computers in there...
So get a cheap router i think they are like 40.00 for the netgear one. make sure it says on the box with Repeater mode. i think is how its worded.. it will pick up open networks with a bit of setup.. you can find all of that on there website..
back when i was in the pc repair business NETWORKING WAS My big thing..
Good Luck..
Thanks er, but I'm looking for a portable solution, like maybe a plug n play antenna or something, I'm rarely at home, mostly mobile.
Sent from my HTC Glacier using xda premium
my router i use for a repeater.. is pluged in the garage.. .. The one in my work van plugs into a invert-er.. its very small.. i think 1x4x6 to 8 inches.. they draw very little voltage..
But yes i do understand what your looking for.. I have looked for something similar for gps.. as you with wifi no real solution..
Good Luck...
This is a shot in the dark, but, .....
I see you are on T-Mobile? Happen to have an WP7 or rooted android phone?
Go the tether route, it really is your best and only solution.
Many, many options at that point, from paying for a tether plan to *ahem* 'circumventing payment'....
- for instance -
I have an HD7, the last update HTC gave out included 'internet sharing' - basicly a mobile hotspot when turned on - and I have not paid for, nor have been charged for a tether plan *seems I got lucky*
As far as android is concerned, there are some apps that will do tethering for you, and sets the data through a proxy, as to lessen alerting the phone co. as to whats *really* going on.
Good luck to you!
I do have a rooted android, the ability to tether and as well as a wireless hotspot. I use that when I can, other areas where tmo service isn't that great is what I find wifi for, and when I get capped lol.
Just trying to find an alternative to siting store front or on their router. An antenna is all I need lol.

I really dislike how the Nexus 4 can't do simple things well

Such as staying connected to my WiFi, or my cellular data connection, or being able to reliably turn Bluetooth on and off. Seriously, these are the things that should just work. On every other phone I've ever owned I've never had a problem with any of these things, let alone all three.
Overall I like the N4 and the positives outweigh the negatives and I plan to keep it for quite a while. But I sure hope these basic things will be corrected in an update soon.
I can help you with that. There is a app that will make you life very easy, it's called "power toggles"
Download it, try out this widget and then thank me later. Hope it helps!

I have never suffered this wifi issue, i don`t think it is caused by the phone but by the router. My wifi connections are rock steady and i never loose connections.
I hate when ppl think their problems are affecting the world. I have 0 of the issues you report.

Can you be more specific on how/when you get these errors? I'm not experiencing any of these problems on my Nexus 4 and I use both WiFi and Bluetooth regularly.
We can help you, but you gotta provide more info.
Rooted? Stock?
If so, ROM/kernel?
Also, what errors are you exactly getting? Or you can provide a logcat.
This has been the absolute best and fastest device I've ever owned or played with. Makes me sad when ppl aren't experiencing the same thing I am. So hopefully we can help you.
None of the problems you are having.
Seemed like phone was having issues staying connected to network, but it cleared up, so I'm guessing it was T-Mobile's issue.
Also, with Franco kernel and custom color settings and volume boost, this phone is near perfect.

I'm having the exact same issues. When attempting to browse the play store I constantly get the " cannot connect to the play store" and I have to hot retry several times before I can continue. This happens every 10 minutes or so and it's driving me crazy. Also when skiing any type of downloading on my Wi-Fi I get awful speeds. I'm talking an hour to download a podcast but it only taking my iPhone 5 approx 10 minutes to download the same podcast. Something is definitely wrong however I bought this phone from someone else so I can't RMA it so think I'm screwed.

You might want to try a different channel or something with your router if you are seeing disconnections a lot. Also is this happening on multiple wifi connections or just on your home one? With Bluetooth I don't really use it so cannot comment on it.

For here the WiFi signal until it looks good on the phone, but no data transfer occurs. From what I've been reading this is happening to many people. I think google should be manifested.
If hardware problem until I change the router, but at least tell me what works. They are anxious to get the phone's SD reader to avoid confusion and leave this problem in WiFi. Just missing they release the next nexus without WiFi to avoid this kind of problem.

[Q] Which router?

okay I know it is not a proper thread xD had no choice...help pls
Hi guys, I have an ISP service of 4mbps, and that gives me about 250kBps i believe, which is pretty fast for my country, ok, its not fast but its okay.
I bought a crappy Belkin wireless N router and it was ok, gave me about 180kBps on download.
But it broke down...
So now im offering 100 bucks for a good router.. was going for a good ASUS ac router but N is cheaper, so I was not sure if I should buy such good router with ISP bottlenecking the router speeds..
What do you think folks!?
I need one with good range also!

Although I think you already ordered the router, I'm reassuring your choice: a good, fast router helps for local traffic too. It's a huge difference from G/100Mbps to N/1Gbps when it comes to wireless/wired transfers between your local devices, be them computers, laptops, phones, TVs or whatever else.
PS: You should emigrate to Romania where your usual download speed would be around 4-5MB/s for as low as 8-10$ a month!

I personally use a Linksys EA2700 which was around 100$ here in Romania.
I don't fully recommend it as I sent back two crashing units (original software). The third one seems to be ok, but it runs dd-wrt (only when I go to the third router was dd-wrt stable for this model).
For more recommendations I'd go to smallnetbuilder.com and dd-wrt.com.

Thanks, I just made up my mind, I will go for the ASUS RT-N66U.

Well... at least with my EA2700 I had three major reasons to switch to dd-wrt:
1. The original has at least one security flaw that nobody seems to patch it.
2. I really got used to local DNS (been using it for years with my previous router - WRT54GL)
3. I prefer running dynamic DNS on the router and dd-wrt has support for no-ip.
Good luck!
PS: 4. The interface is better than the original.

execuse me, whats the benefit of using dd-wrt than original firmware? is that making the internet connection more stable?
Let me remind you why I picked dd-wrt over the original EA2700 firmware:

T-mobile is now giving free wifi router

Today I called t-mobile customer care for a few questions and before I got off the phone the rep asked me if I wanted a free router that gives great wifi calling, it use to cost $50 to get it but now is free. The only thigh you must know it's that if you decide to leave t-mobile you better return it or they will hit you with a nice bill.
Yeah that has been out for almost a 9 months.. Worth it

Anyone know what model Asus it compares with? I have an RT-AC66U. If nothing else I figure T-Mos might make a nice extender.

It's actually the exact same hardware as the RT-AC68U. In fact I'm running builds of Merlin's custom RT-AC68U firmware on mine (I got mine soon after they became available before Tmo sent out an OTA that locked the bootloader).
Prior to getting my "cellspot", I actually had the exact same router that you do now The RT-AC66U is definitely a solid router, but I've found the 68U to be a fairly significant upgrade. I'd say that there's really no reason not to "rent" one for a refundable deposit. I was initially planning on keeping it for $100, but now I'm thinking that by the time I feel the need for a new router there will likely be better / newer models available for not too much more than that. Anyway, I get better and more consistent wifi performance with the 68 vs. the 66, it has more memory and more features (ex. QoS, which the 66U can't handle due to it packing less RAM), and if you decide to downgrade the bootloader to run custom firmware such as Merlin's (MAD soldering skills required!), then you can even overclock it!
So, yes, this is quite an excellent router. When Tmo started offering them gratis-ish it was some of the best hardware on the market. It's no longer top tier, but IME it's significantly better than the preceding Asus model. My only (minor) concern with getting one now is that I don't know how configurable the settings are with TMo's locked down config... still, for a refundable $25, I'd say it's worth at least checking one out; especially for people who don't have an AC router (every speed test I run from my N4 or tablet maxes out my 50 / 10 cable service... seriously, never seen a wifi speed test slower than like 47 Mbit down).
Oh btw, I'd almost definitely use the Cellspot as your main router. I initially planned on using my AC66U as a bridge or repeater or something, but as I live in an apt. and don't need a huge amount of space covered, my research into those kinds of applications generally made me feel that setting something like that up would "hurt" my LAN rather than help it. I did just find a good use for it though... I recently got a NAS with dual lan ports, so since my old router is just sitting around I'm going to configure it as a switch so that I can use port trunking. I don't want to discourage you from researching everything that could use an extra router for. A good site / forum for general home networking info with sort of an emphasis on Asus hardware (you'll also find the above mentioned Merlin there) is smallnetbuilder.com. Good luck all! I'm pretty familiar with many "cellspot" related things, so if anyone has any other questions I'd be happy to help or at least point you in the right direction :good:

Wow, thanks for all the info. That is a good deal then. It's too bad to hear about the bootloader getting locked. The RT-AC66U actually has QoS, but it turns off hardware acceleration. I tried to use it once and it all but killed my internet access. Kind of odd, I remember using QoS on my ancient linksys router 10 years ago running DDWRT.

Ah, my bad on the QoS... I leave QoS off, but that's one thing about the Cellspot: I'm pretty sure that it's enabled by default to prioritize VOIP and I don't think it's modifiable (the whole purpose being to "encourage'' wifi calling and all). I'm not sure if it does so to the degree that it'll slow down a download on a PC if you get a call... I suppose the biggest variable there is the speed of your connection. Actually by far, the most comprehensive source of info on it is actually a Slickdeals thread. It's insanely long, but the OP was edited into an extremely informative wiki! It is possible to downgrade the bootloader to flash alternative firmware, and doing so will actually cause it to identify itself on your network as an RT-68ACU rather than a TM-AC1900 and is explained by a guy named Engineer in that thread. It requires a pretty risky hardware mod involving some extremely precise soldering, but if you've got the skills I'd definitely recommend it. I'd like to actually do it myself sometime but need to work more on my soldering precision (semi OT but related to phones in a sense, I've gotten into buying relatively cheap headphones and modding them head-fi style to greatly improve the sq - classic ex. KSC75 )
Anyway, here's the thread with pretty much everything you'd want to know and more re: the cellspot https://slickdeals.net/f/7193262-t-...c-router-by-asus-free-for-postpaid-25-deposit
I have the T-Mobile router running on AP Mode since I use pfSense as my main router. I have been experiencing laggy internet on my Note 4. Not sure if it is related to QoS. I do hope T-Mobile releases a firmware update as their router is behind in updates compared to RT-AC68U.
Anyone else seeing this lag issue with TM-AC1900 router?

The QoS feature is separate from the T-Mobile modifications. The tm1900ac still has the option to enable or disable QoS. Enabling this feature does turn off hardware acceleration though, just like an ac68u.

Is this feature under AP mode as well?
Yup I've had the router for about 2 months and it's nice!!! It's only $99 if u buy it outright!

I just receive it today it's great
You can also opt to get the free signal Booster instead, if you don't have WiFi

So it's not a singnal booster? Just wifi calling?

The cell booster does lte. U need lte in area for it to boost. The WiFi router does WiFi and WiFi calling boost but not cell signal

So besides being a pricy router it doesn't do anything better than my old netgear that also allows me to do wifi calling?

It depends on how technical your gonna get with it.. Setting it up stock blows any netgear or lnksys router right out of the water.
