I'd been trying to find a way To use the USB OTG as the default sdcard. But everything I see simply allows for it to be used as storage. This method will allow you to install apps to it, using the thumb drive as default storage. Essentially I believe it does what android x86 does when it allows you to set the HDD as an sdcard, just uses apps to accomplish it. I didn't make any of these apps and the idea isn't really mine either, heard it from someone else.
1 - Format your USB Drive to ntfs
2 - download and install ParagonNTFS
3 - download and install NtfsSd
4 - Plug in your USB drive, open paragonNTFS, and go to settings-->check and fix, then mount the drive
*the check and fix will tell you the path to the USB drive /Dev/block/xxxxxx (probably /dev/block/sda1)*
5 - open NtfsSd and go to menu-->preferences
6 - change Mount device to /Dev/block/xxxxxx (gotten in step 4, and again, probably /dev/block/sda1)
7 - make sure external storage is set to /storage/sdcard0
8 - click mount in NtfsSd
Enjoy the storage
ISSUES I'VE COME ACROSS
---You cannot currently see BOTH the built in storage and USB storage at the same time, its either one or the other. I personally resolved that by copying the contents of my internal storage to my USB drive prior to mounting it in NtfsSd
---In order to get back to your internal storage you have to unmount in NtfsSd FIRST, then unmount in ParagonNTFS
IF YOU CANNOT SEE YOUR INTERNAL STORAGE AFTER UNMOUNTING THE USB DRIVE SIMPLY REBOOT YOUR NEXUS BY HOLDING THE POWER BUTTON FOR 30 SECONDS

Only as long as you want to use the extra storage. The biggest issue I have is that when I want to charge I can't use the USB storage at the same time lol. So I in plug it, charge it, then mount the storage again
Sounds really cool, but how are your I/O speeds? I know it will probably vary greatly from person to person due to the differences between USB cables and drives, but just wondering what your personal experience has been.
According to antutu benchmark I'm getting 8.5 MB/s write and 13.5 MB/s read. Normally I get about 20 MB/s read/write off the USB storage. Like you said, I'm sure different cables and different drives(especially different drives) would change that

Not bad, thats higher than I expected. Thanks for this, its pretty cool! May do it one day when I run out of space on this trusty 8gb

I meant I normally get about 20 MB/s on the built-in storage so the USB storage averages about half of that...which isn't terrible. and unless i'm doing anything super intensive i don't see why i'd need much faster speeds. that's still 68mbps write and 108mbps read. Still can play HD video, I haven't tried any games or anything yet though. I plan to download a large game(probably Batman) and see how that runs off of the USB.
this would be awesome for games that take up Huge amounts of storage .. most are now getting 1.3 gb and more...

Games especially since the movies and music you could already store on your usb drive and use the standard OTG method. Like you said though, games are easily 1gb+ and on an 8gb device(which I have) space quickly becomes a hot commodity lol
Hello I have just registered to say thank you for the guide, also I have figured out how to switch back to internal storage without rebooting.
You have to just make sure that every app that has been run while USB in is force closed in app info, I was having problems with drive getting corrupted every time but since doing this It has been fine.
Also I noticed on some custom ROMs eg, paranoid android, omega kaos, it automounts anyway without paragon in storage and gets confused you have to unmount in storage settings and manually mount in paragon then NTFS SD, then unmount again in storage settings, winning
Thanks I was trying to use external to internal SD app on play store to do whole card swap but after a reboot all apps that were installed would be disappeared as that app didnt seem to work for me like it has for three other devices, maybe in conjunction with this guide it may work but I'm happy now and been upgrading redownloading apps for a week I won't be messing with it till I have to.
Thanks again,
P.s anyway to edit ROM so it doesn't system mount as I could not get NTFS SD to work without paragon, says 3g-mount busy or unavailable
Edit, I had problems with permissions using this method, been using script method but just mounted whole sdcard/android been running sweet since, just have to click script when needed. Copied over android folder from sdcard to USB etc first if not fresh system.

Replying to kinda mark the thread and say thanks.
I will be doing this to a Android TV(Android on a stick) iMito MX1 that I ordered. it only has 8Gb for internal storage so it's limited. I have several hard drives lying around and am going to hook a 500Gb one up to the unit and see if this will kick over from internal to the hard drive. If it works then I will have tons of space to download all the big games to play on my TV with a controller of mouse KB combo
I hope this works.
This seems like a great way for us tightwads who got the 8gb version to get some space, lol. Should work well with games as long as the i/o speeds don't cause lag.
hi, what kernel should i use to make ntfssd work?
somebody needs to go develop a rubberized protective case/sleeve (like what google sells) with an included 64GB sd card and a built in OTG USB plug that slips right into the miniUSB on the N7... wouldn't that be cool, especially if it mounted and unmounted automatically upon plug in, and allowed for the installation of large APPs extra data packages!
does this work on 4.2.1 ?
Nope doesnt work un 4.2.1 se need and update

Hey what I choose when mount in paragon NTFS
Either automatic mounting
Or
Advanced choose option to mount
Hi,
anybody still using this approach? I was trying to follow the instruction but I did not succeed. I was not able to mount my ntfs-formated usbstick on Android 5.

I am considering getting a Xoom when they become available in the UK, to replace my laptop when travelling, however my music collection on my portable hard drive is 41Gb, and I would like to play some of this via Xoom.
I know I probably would not use all of the 41Gb of music all the time, but sometimes I get an urge to listen to an obscure song, so would there be anyway I could connect my External Hard Drive to the USB port on the Xoom? Or would this be totally impossible?
Stew
I do not have the wiring/cords in my office for this but do at home, I will give it a try this evening. Seems certain they would have to build the capability into the OS, so who knows.
Almost certainly no. Even if the port can be a USB host, android is not setup to deal with external non SD storage.

Not yet, but it should be when the sd card update goes live. You should check the motorola support forums where this has been directly covered by the moto dev responsible for said usb port.
So what are the USB Ports for on the Speaker Dock for?

Not entirely true. The Gtab port can be used as a USB host and I have no problem plugging in a flash drive. The atrix (with the lapdock) can also use USB host ports with external storage. There are hit and miss results with external drives, but that has more to do with power than anything else.

Completely agree. I definitely used USB drives on my G-Tablet. Haven't tried on my Adam yet, but I assume it's the same.
I would love to see Android burning DVDs. Take a quick video with your digital camera. Plus the camera into the zoom, edit it with the movie editor app, burn to disk.
Torrent a Linux bootable CD IMG burn to disk and fix a friends broken computer.
With the Tegra 3 quadcores on the horizon, bluetooth keyboard compatibility and this I see less and less reason for most people to need a laptop.

Okay first post and sure this is off to a great start, because its probably like the lamest question ever....
I see the SD card partition on the Nexus S and for the LIFE of me can't actually figure out what its for.
If USB storage is for holding media and info then what is the SD for?
At one point i was getting memory errors from apps and it said SD memory at capacity or something like that and the limit seemed VERY small. I ran a cache cleaner and removed some clashing apps (i believe) and it seemed fine after that.
Is the SD the internal RAM?
feel free to call me any derogatory name you like as long as you give me a wiki or explanation. I tried searching the forum and google but it just brings up posts where people already talk about SD with knowledge.
thanks

The SD card is a non removable flash storage device. It's the storage you see when you mount USB storage.
Apps will cache data to the SD card, this is where any downloads go, any picture s or movies you take, etc. It is 16 GB of general storage (separate from the 1GB of internal storage).
Think of it as 'built-in'. For all practical purposes, there is a sdcard, which behaves just as it would on any other android, but you can't remove it. I'm not sure if it is physically part of the internal memory or not. I suspect there is one 16GB chip that is partitioned for internal and /sdcard.

i am a bit stumped then. when it gave me the sd capacity it was NO WHERE near 16g's. it was like 800mbs or something. this is why my slacker kept crashing out and giving me a memory error.
is there a way in the OS to see the SD capacity? I had an app that told me but got rid of it cause i think it was also part of the crashing issues i had.
so is what your saying the SD is what you see when you USB your phone to the computer? its that root DIR. In clockwork i can see a USB and SD dir separately i believe but ill have to check again
thanks
on a side note does anyone else have slacker issues. this is how the entire subject came up to me anyway

Slacker works fine for me, always has (outside of it's poor ability to precache the next song).
For Storage go to Settings -> Storage. USB storage is the SD card.
What space you see when you plug in the NS to your computer's USB is the SD card.
It is not the root folder of the whole phone.
Under the "Settings -> Storage" window on your phone, the "USB Storage" is we are calling the SD card.
The Internal Storage is what the phone needs itself.
Here is mine:

Because of all the music on my NS & the fact almost all my apps are there too, I am sucking up approx 3 gigs of SD or USb storage space.
The NS is sucking up approx 800megs of space, of the 1 gig available to it.
As for your Slacker issues, Although I am not familiar with this application, have you tried just reinstalling it.
Heeter
cool thanks guys.
just couldnt figure whyd they name something twice.
As for slacker i beleive it was a mix of
juice defender (which i may try again solo to see if its really that good)
ad blocker (which was jsut something i tried but never really needed, good riddance)
and like these two cleaners which i dont remember the names of.
Now i have NG cache cleaner which is nice and my slcaker seems to be normal again
wasnt sure if the adblocker was seeing the commercials in slacker as ads and trying to block them out causing problems so i got rid of that first.
as the other guy said the pre chaching was HORRIBLE at times making me think the app locked. but after those removals it worked fine with occassional lag betweensongs
Hi Guys,
I have been working on a storage widget/app for a while now focusing mainly on the XOOM.
As I am nearing a market release I would like to test its compatibility with your Iconia tablets for which I have been working on support.
The support is preliminary and is as of yet untested because I don't have an Iconia.
I would appreciate if anyone could test it and provide screen shots of the app and widget and if there are any, logcat error logs.
I hope you enjoy the application/widget and I look forward to sorting out support for you guys!

So, I have attached a special build that should work for you guys on the Iconia - One thing I will point out is that when you add the widget, read the name carefully, the one for your device says "Acer" in the label. Enjoy.

No problem, as for the ntfs mount, if you mount it at /mnt/usbOTG it should show up, if you can't change where its mounted I can look at adding support but I can't keep addind mount points for every app that mounts somewhere, maybe I'll look at reintegrating custom mount points.

No problem, usbOTG is just a directory that the appliation supports already for external HDD, if you can change drive mount mount point that would fix it.
As for the two directories usbdrive and usb_storage I don't know, do you have several connection inputs on your tablets? One is obviously for a USB HDD, the other i'm not sure. USB pen drive? Maybe if you have a hub?
usb ports/mounts
The USB drive is a micro USB port used for mounting, connectiong you tablet to computer or device.
The external USB is a full size port.this supports drive and devices.the USB drive I think is connected to main internal storage only.
Hope this helps.

That's interesting, they use the _exact_ same code for deleting the space so It's strange that theyre different. I'll look into it.

I have released SE Widget on the market which aims to do that, and it will likely replace this build. "SE Widget" aims to be customizable to be able to run on any device without a whole bunch of widgets. At the moment it can have Data, Storage and a third set to a location of your choice.

Alias_Neo, I figured out the problem. The widget and the app are not reporting the same info. The widget is reporting used/total memory while the app is reporting free/total memory. At the time I was close to 50% usage so thats why the numbers were close but not the same, after adding some more files I figured out what was going on. You were just reporting different info. I just thought the numbers reported were the same.

Calendar (i will use Jorte)
Currents
Earth
Email
Gallery ( i will use quickpic)
Google+
Latitude
Local
Messenger
Play Music(will use my own musicplayer)

Voice Search
Youtube(will use www.youtube.com)
How can I remove them the securest way?
Anything else to free up space?
You can remove most of those. But the safest way to find out is to rename them by adding .bak at the end then reboot. Check for ill side effects and if none, then you can truly delete them. I would keep downloads and a few others I saw you print. Anything that can be installed from market can be removed.
Sent from my EVO using xda premium
Ok. Anyone done this before and now which I should delete?
Can I just rename those under /system/app/ ?
Removing apps is always a decent option to free up space. Just be careful. I would also recommend investing in an otg cable. Using thumbdrives or external self powered hard drives is a great option. Putting my 1Tb drive to work with it soon.
Sent from My SKYICS powered, iPhone killing, i727 death machine.
Before removing anything, you should do a nandroid backup. Then move that to a safe place off the device.
That way, if you mess something up, you can get it back.
OTG works great for storage, you just can't use it for app installation and usage. Photos and videos work well from it though you have to deal with something sticking out of your device.
You might also consider one of the WiFi devices (like Kingston Wi-Drive) which will give you similar to OTG without having something plugged in all the time.
Yeah, first thing I did was a nandroid backup
I tried rename some of the apps under /system/app to *.bak, and did a reboot, but they are still in my apps?
I have to order a OTG cable, to store media on! Will this work for a 8GB aswell, says only 16 and 32GB? http://www.ebay.com/itm/USB-A-Femal...ccessories&hash=item1e70f4ba8c#ht_1628wt_1010
I would strongly suggest against removing downloads.
A great place that I always free app space from is /system/media. You can always generally safely remove ringtones, pictures, wallpapers, live wallpaper app and wallpapers if you're not using them...
Make sure that you're not locally caching google play music songs if you are using play - your stuff won't be available offline, but it also won't take up space.
Sent from my rooted Nexus 7 via xda-developers app.
This us the very reason why I always buy more than I think I need as far as disk space goes. I know Google and Asus were aiming to keep the N7 at a minimum cost but 8gb is useless for a device of this type. In actuality you're only getting a little more than 5gb.

You might want to see how much space you actually save before going through the trouble. I suspect that most of these apps are a few mb at most.
It doesn't stick out that bad.

I got my Nexus 7, just rooted it and thinking of free up some space. Which apps can I remove without damaging the system? Can I remove these without any trouble:
Calendar (i will use Jorte)
Currents
Earth
Email
Gallery ( i will use quickpic)
Google+
Latitude
Local
Messenger
Play Music(will use my own musicplayer)
Talk
Voice Search
Youtube(will use www.youtube.com)
How can I remove them the securest way?
Anything else to free up space?

You can safely remove all of the listed apps using Titanium Backup. But I do believe that Latitude and Local are part of the Google Maps app and that will have to go if you want the two gone.
If you go to settings / storage you can peek around and see what's taking up most space.
Also android assistant can help you mass cleanup your caches - use with care.
Like above posters said everything on Google play can be smoothly uninstalled or reinstalled if you please.

removing system apps wont free up any space in your storage/app partition. itll free up space in the system partition which wont help you with what you want. theres already lots of space in the system partition. just to let you know.
Please ignore my post.
About OTG
Is it possible to put my games on USB drive? I have Modern Combat 4, Fifa 12, Real Racing.
I ordered both of these cards from Amazon:
Sandisk 128gb micro SD
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B010Q57S62
Samsung EVO 128gb micro SD
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00P3NMVVU
And they both read and write really slow in my Galaxy Note 3. Does this happen to anyone else?
For example, when I open the Gallery app, it takes forever to load all the thumbnails.
One time, I tried to delete 5 pictures and it took MINUTES for the phone to delete them.
Any idea what's going on?
Could be due to the fact that Note 3 does not officially support memory cards over 64GB.

So, is no one using 128gb micro SD cards in their Note 3?
Did some research - http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-note-3/accessories/microsd-people-using-note-3-t3063342
People seem to be using 128GB ones fine. I'd try the memory stick in another device and/or a computer.

Thanks but it's a Micro SD card not a memory stick.

Meant memory card*, woops. And with computer, I meant through an adapter.
Have you been installing a bunch of apps lately? I got that generic 128gb, black colored card one off eBay, used it all of last year with no issues. This week I have installed a bunch apps. To clean up the phone I added SDMaid, nice effective app but can be dangerous too. I carelessly used one of the cleaning options and it automatically deleted a whole bunch of things -system files, photos, etc. Luckily I always have Dumpster and restored everything. Now some pics are blank and a myriad of a few issues. I could use file manager to move files from internal sd to external, it creates a folder but no files are moved while the source is empty. It can't even copy nor see the files+folders on the SD card. I installed ES file manager, it's working great.
I intend to factory reset after everything is backed up. Then I will have to go back on an apps diet - only necessary apps. So i think my card is ok but one of the new apps is the culprit - pro'ly 1Mobile, IDK for sure.
No I have not.

Good
Well maybe you have corrupted files on your sd card and the android trying to fix, index it and it causes the lags .
Try to move back apps to your internal storage, set camera to your internal as well format your memory card using a pc.
I hope this can help you with your problem.

So, I can't fit all my external storage on my internal?
My external storage is like 85gb and my internal is only 32gb? I have everything backed up on my Alienware M14x R2 laptop.
What I've done is format my micro SD inside my phone and copy everything back onto my micro SD? I've done this with BOTH the Samsung brand and Sandisk brand cards but both are really slow to read when I'm running my Gallery app. All of my pictures and videos are stored on my micro SD. I have 5+yrs of stuff.
I don't know but try to remove your Facebook app !! And update me with the results

Thanks for SD Booster, but I have a Verizon phone no root
OP didn't say which Android version he/she is running, but since I never updated from 4.4.2, my suggestions are based on that, but should be similar on newer versions. First of all Note 3 fully supports 128GB and probably higher capacity but no way to check it yet, so that's not a problem. As for solutions: when was the last time caches were cleared? I do this on regular basis, once every 1-2 weeks, otherwise my phone slows down, the easiest would be using something like Android assistant and it should work without root. Another thing I do is manually kill programs I don't use often: once the program is run once it will load into RAM forever, even after reboot and then memory is being swapped all the time. Also you could download A1 SD bench, that can check your sd card memory speed. Just to give you an idea I get 20MB/s read, 15 MB/s write from the TEAM chinese 128GB sd card, you should get little bit more. Indexing used to be an issue, but if you didn't add large amount of new files recently, it should be ok. I got thousands of pictures and videos on my card, around 60 GB total and all is good. Your cards are high quality and should be running good, unless you running Android 5 and didn't use SD card fix, but there are threads showing how.

Yikes! I am on Android 5! That might be it? I'll see if I can find the SD card fix, thank you! Is this it? http://www.ninjaromeo.com/fix-external-sd-card-write-error-lollipop/
I don't really have read or write errors, it's just slow
I never installed Android 5, therefore I have no first hand experience, so can't help much, but I did read Google keeps on messing with write permissions to SD, (probably trying to force people to use their cloud storage) and people reported all kinds of problems, it could be related to your issue. Did you try downloading "A1 sd bench" from Google, should be free and run speed test just for heck of it, both cards should have minimum 10MB write speed and at least 15MB read speed, maybe the cards are fake/broken? Eliminate the obvious, concentrate on what's left, but there is something wrong.
How can u really expect a phone with 64gb support to run 128 GB card that too smoothly.?
I have got 256 GB SD card and it just helps me to store my data safely I don't really find full smooth running SD card that too 64GB+ card anywhere ........
