I'm torn...how to carry my N7? - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I picked up a pretty nice case for my N7. Black, leather, lots of folding options but it makes it feel like I'm carrying a binder. I have a binder and a man purse and I hate to carry them both.
I do wear baggy jeans, so it fits perfect in my back pocket. The problem is that I have to take it out to sit down and I'm scared I'll forget and crush it with my butt.
The only options I can think of are to start wearing cargo pants every day, keep the thing in my man purse and carry said man purse or just not carry it.
I carry a gun most days, so belt clips and the like are not options.

I carry mine like a book.

This isn't an iPhone, you can carry it however you like
I also just carry it around like a book but maybe you could use a small backpack or something?

As long as you carry a gun, you could carry the Nexus 7 in an Easter basket if you wanted.
I just put mine in a slim sleeve and carry it like a book. Had to make sure it was a slim sleeve, because the first one I had kinda looked like a ladies handbag.

Use a sleeve and carry it around like a big wallet if that's your thing. But yeah, be careful picking out some sleeves, they will look like clutch bags.

Easter basket is an option I did not think of....
I'll check out the sleeves. Come November I'm trading my phone for a tablet, so I need to get used to carrying it every day

Target sells mini travel bags in the 20 to 35 dollar range. I have a $24 swiss airplane bag that works great for tablets under 8 inches.

I carry mine in the blurex slim case, the one that doesn't cover the screen up... and then I put it in this mofi android sleeve. It's nice and padded.

Hahaha! Classic
I carry mine in a side compartment in a briefcase and sometimes 'Murse'.
Shopping for a rugged case when one is available.
Otherwise, I carry mine like my old Daytimer.

I carry it in either my back pocket, side pocket of backpack, or cargo pocket of my shorts. I wouldn't be afraid of cracking it unless you're planning on falling on your @$$ a lot.

I been struggling with trying to find the right case until you said this... I'm so getting an Easter basket now! Yep, I was class clown. But this idea is so halarious I can't pass up the oppurtunity!

cargo pants/shorts

I use a case for the Kindle Fire:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005DOL0R0/ref=oh_details_o02_s00_i00
It fits the N7 perfectly, has adequate padding and has a small band on the outside that you slip your fingers through that helps you hand hold the case without strain.
Very happy with this case....

A backpack is not really my style... easter basket is for sure!

Get a Maxpedition and you can carry both your gun and Nexus 7 in it. I have the Jumbo verispack and it's great!

I have the knock-off maxpedition for 25 bucks and works the same. Although I don't have a gun. Yet. I put the N7 where the gun probably goes.

Ok..I looked at those. I'd opt for the Easter basket

I just carry a laptop bag always. I ironically don't even carry a laptop.... Just nexus keyboard and other necessities.

How about a Little Red Riding Hood basket?

Otterbox Users: Defender or Commuter?

Which do you guys recommend?
If you have any intentions of keeping your phone in a pocket, then I would steer clear of the Defender. I got one right after I bought my Atrix, and I maybe had it on for a total of 30 minutes.
It makes it difficult at best to get in and out of pockets, and whatever rubber they use will attract lint from pants you don't even remember owning.
It's probably a great case if you have a man purse or have an affinity for genie pants, but I think for the average joe it's just a bit bulky.
Oh and the screen protector kinda gives a rainbow effect. Overall I was not impressed by the case that so many had raved about.

Thanks for the quick response. Have you tried the Commuter?
Defender is made for belt clip, commuter is made for pockets, impact is silicon case for purses, etc!
All you have to do is go to the Otterbox website to see this!
Otterbox - Atrix
Screen protector rainbow effect is a very well known issue. There are solutions for this, one using baby powder, the other using the natural oil on your fingers. Both easily found with Google.

Thank you.
Unless your planning on running your phone over with a truck, The Otter Box Commuter is amazing. I currently have it on my Atrix "4G" and it works as advertised. I've dropped mine from a 25 foot cat walk and have it survive. Also i've thrown it against a wall multiple times to brag about how well it works.
Otter Box Commuter
I have the Defender and the Impact.
First and foremost let me say this, Don't waste a dime on the Impact! It is a HIGHLY OVERPRICED Gel Skin Case slapped with the Otterbox name on it.
I know the link was posted above showed all 3, but definitely steer clear from the Impact.
As for the Defender, it's will easily protect your phone if you don't mind wearing it on your belt. It it definitely not the case to purchase if you are gonna have it in your pocket. (way to much of a PITA to take in and out)
As for the Defender Case itself, it's a "Bomb Shelter" and basically turns your Atrix into a rugged Motorola Defy (minus the submerged water test)
Bottom line -
Defender - Best Case for Outside Belt Wear
Commuter - Good for the pockets
Impact - Overpriced Junk!
Hope that helps...
I have debated buying the Commuter. Suits me more as I play pocket pool with my Atrix! Still contemplating whether I will lose the silky smooth feeling I get when I put my hand in my pocket if I use one instead of the nude Atrix!
I had the Defender on my iPhone 3GS, but got tired of bumping it off getting in and out of the car. Glad it was on there, cos' it sure did protect the phone when it got knocked off my belt and smashed on the concrete.
Impact............what he said -------> ccrows
Thanks everyone! Went with the Commuter. I'll write up a quick review when it comes in tomorrow.
I have the Commuter. Works pretty well, has survived several drops without issue. It makes the phone much easier to securely hold as well.
I used the included screen protector for a week or so and couldn't stand the feel vs the naked glass. Took the protector off and I have no plans to replace it.

i have the defender (love it), but in my line of work I needed something that was rugged, so alot of it just depends on what it is that you do.
I use the commuter and carry mostly in a shirt pocket. It makes the phone a bit less slippery, which is good for a shirt pocket.
I do not use the screen protector. The only problem I have ever had is drops which dent corners. The commuter does that very well without a screen protector.

Rugged case to make this a children's device?

I'm getting to the point when I can move on from the A500 and instead of selling it, I might just keep it and just build it into a device we can use with our very young son (16 months now). Any advice for making this a rugged device? I catch him sometimes leaning in on the glass...

I would think for a child that young. There would be nothing you could protect the screen with and it still function.
Children at that age even if tough the be cautious is unlikely going to work .AND A BOY hehe mine would stand on his toys and try to ride them. no matter what.. NOW He is in college to be a psyc. imagine that..
good luck I so love toddlers and there impulses ..

I agree. But all you can do is keep working with the kid and hope to teach him to be gentle .I know from experience with children some get it quickly some.Well like my Brothers children and nephews Its not a easy task. But please do not take this as saying in any way its a issue with the kids . Its just we are all different even at such a early age.
Yes, but need to make it rugged first.

Look up a "TPU" case on amazon. Try ebaying a "hard case acer a500" I believe I found some on there a while back. Also look up ghost armor... I think they make a pretty leet case too. I havent tried any of these... they just looked appealing. I have a 11 month old and if he plays on the tablet he does get anxious and beats on the screen sometimes! Let us know what you decide to go with!
Otterbox makes (or at least made) a defender for the nookcolor... I bet it would fit a nook tablet. only 7 inches makes it easier for a kid to hold, plus it has the corner cut-out so you can clip it to stuff to prevent drops.
Or the childpad is expected in march for $129
I was reading about the child pad.. I think it would be great for anyone who wants a very rugged Tablet. Very respectable Specs.Would be great for tossing in a gym bag or use say on a Construction site.
OHH And yes nice for a kid the rounded edges and the raises bezel will protect the screen from drops maybe even a few Temper tantrum tosses across the Kitchen.
Great Find

It doesn't solve my problem of getting rid of the A500!!!
Hi my son is a yr and 6 mo he has used my tablet since I bought it September 11 before that he used my nook color he can used every app kid zone is a great app to start with it will lock your screen and has tons of toddler games, paint, and movies the case I use is a folio case as well as a screen protector.

I put a ghost armour screen cover and then a roocase ultraslim leather. It's not infallible by any stretch, but it's a heck of a lot tougher than before. Also makes it able to stand up on its own which is pretty nice. It wouldn't stand at the angle I wanted, so I put a couple of velcro stickies on the back where I wanted the fold to come in to get the height right, and boom! All I need to do now is punch out holes for the microphones, something no case ever seems to do for the a500.
Next time around you may also want to consider ensquared insurance. Why worry about making a device unbreakable when you can simply have someone else fix it free if it breaks?
Did you find a case? I am trying to accomplish the same thing. Would love something like the Gumdrop Cases but they don't make it for the A500.

acer a500 case

Dropped face down from 2.5 feet

Pulled up to 7-11 this morning for some coffee, One was on my lap, parked, opened door, got out, SLAP!!! It fell face down flush with the ground (asphalt). I think I stared at it on the ground for about 3 minutes, before my eyes teared up I decided to face my fears and pick it up. The glass was perfect, no scratches, nicks, or cracks... I was VERY surprised. It fell hard, the aluminum on all 4 corners does have a nick in it, but the glass was fine.... Awesome.

I think because all 4 corners are chipped, most of the force was distributed and saved your screen.

Seems the 4 corners of the phone are slightly raised as I dropped mine face down and only one corner has a little nick.
HTC phones have always been indestructible for me especially the screens. Galaxy s3 and note 2 screens are very fragile.

I was just thinking the same.
I'm a fan of the Baseus Slim flip case. It's cheap, good quality and it protects the screen.
I never thought I'd like a flip case but it's actually really unobtrusive and when I'm home I take it out.
http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.view&id=300885232164
I loved the slip case for the Sensation. It was light, thin, aesthetically pleasing and protected the phone really well. I don't understand why HTC didn't continue making them in that style. They went back to the chunky ones with the pull tab for the One X and they don't do a slip case for the One at all. I much prefer being able to feel the lines of such a beautiful device when I'm using it.
http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item.view&id=180718618384
I would never have a flip case that holds my bank cards though. Firstly it's very nature makes it larger than necessary but you're also making a very convenient little package and advertisement for muggers and pick pockets. Not clever if you live in a city.
Sent from my HTC One using Tapatalk 2
I gotta ask you something guys.
I'm trying to decide what to buy. Flipcase, pouch or some clear gel case.
I really want to buy a pouch because I don't want to hide this beauty. So my question is; when do you think people drop their phone most? while talking or while taking it out of pocket? I mean if I got pouch it'll protect it if I drop when taking out of my pocket. But It wouldn't help if it was in my hand (obviously)
I always like pouches. All of my phones look like new when I finish with them.
In my opinion, skins don't protect the phone it's so easy to scratch the screen in your pocket and screen protectors look like ****.
Flip covers aren't ideal either. You could easily get keys or loose change between the screen and the flap, when in your pocket.
I like pouches because you hold the phone as it was intended to be and you view it as intended. What's the point of having a beautiful device if it's hidden under layers of gel, leather or plastic? It's like everyone who has an iPhone is always telling me how beautiful it is and that's why they don't want an android phone. Then I ask them the last time they actually saw their beautiful iPhone out of it's case and that makes them think.
The difficulty I'm finding with the One and a slip case is as I pointed out above. HTC made a great slip case for the Sensation but the last few they've made have sucked. I have a One X slip case and it's huge both on the phone and in the hand. I've tried loads of third party slip cases in the past, with other phones, and the main issues are quality and that they're generally ill fitting. Not to mention they often look like crap.
The reason I started buying official HTC cases was that I was sick of buying new cases all the time and I saw one cheap and decided to try it. I have to say that the quality is generally way better with their own cases and I've bought official ever since (I've owned six HTC phones). This time round though I think they've screwed it up. The official cases for the One are too bulky. I want a tight fitting slip case that covers the top of the phone well but is easy enough to remove the phone from to answer quickly.
You also have to consider the material. When I first started buying cases I really didn't want leather and I bought ones made from textiles but they aren't so easy to slip in and out of your pocket. In fact gel cases pretty much grip the material in your pockets, this could cause you to fumble with the phone to get it out of your pocket and drop it. I say that because it has happened to me before and I had a few near misses. So. Anyway. I ended up realising why it makes a lot of sense to go with leather. It's just as easy to get in and out of your pocket as with no case at all.

Lightweight sleeve cover for home use?

I currently have a Poetic Slimline case for my Nexus 10 (with hard back and magnetic cover), but it makes the tablet quite heavy to hold when I'm using it as an e-reader. Since it very rarely leaves the house I'm now looking for a lightweight sleeve which I can slip it into when I'm not using it - preferably a simple, soft sleeve with no zip. It's just to give it a small amount of protection from things being placed on top of it when it's lying on the table or sofa. Can anyone recommend anything? (in the UK)
I had a moko slim when I owned my nexus 10 for a short period of time. I loved it AND it was cheap. I dont know how hard it is to get across the pond but I believe dodocase makes a classy looking leather sleeve thats slightly padded. Only bad thing is it's pretty expensive ($65 US).

Thanks for the reply. The moko slim looks pretty similar to the poetic slimline case that I already have - it adds alot of bulk to the tablet. Unfortunately the $65 price tag for a dodocase rules it out - I'd personally never spend 20% of the price of the tablet on a case!
Lol agreed. At 20% the cost of the tablet its an awfully steep price... Check amazon for faux leather sleeves. I want to say I've seen some for mega cheap. Or maybe the Google play store still has the official cover- that would be nice because it integrates into that peel off back panel by the camera and barely adds any weight. But then it only protects the screen...

I know you didn't want a zip but this is what I am using. Gives some protection when not in use but no extra weight when using the tablet.

Thanks for the suggestion. I usually leave the tablet on charge when it's not in use, which is the main reason for not wanting a zip as it would get in the way. I know I could leave it unzipped, but it would just be simpler to find a sleeve that the tablet slides into from the top. Like a large sock, I suppose.

Yeah, I THOUGHT that'd get your attention.
This is probably one of the stupidest questions you'll see, but here goes..
How do you CARRY the Note4? I have NEVER carried my phone in a pants pocket EXCEPT I have slid it into a cargo pocket when wearing cargo shorts in the summer time. I wear a lot of shirts without pockets or, since it's winter, I might be wearing a sweater... no pockets. Do holsters work for this? Never used a holster either. ..

hi ,
i carry mine in a "moon bag "( @ fanny pack @ waist wallet @ belly bag @ bum bag ...etc )
if i go somewhere and i have either, my Gear watch
connected or Plantronic bluetooth headset connected ( i have an third party app " eCID" on phone ,
that is set to read full sms 's or announce caller id via the bluetooth headset etc ) ,
The reason ,is that i don't have to pull phone from bag,
everytime i get a call or sms ... .works for me!!
good luck
Front trouser pocket. Without a case it's small enough. With a case... forget it lol.
Front pocket, with Otterbox Commuter case. No problem. I sometime use a Targus 10 inch tablet bag to carry my GN4 and a bunch of peripherals/accessories.

So far.... my jackets and coats all have some sort of breast pocket so carrying it around when we're going to the store or whatever is fine. I still have a problem when I GET somewhere like a relative's house for a party. If I don't have a shirt pocket I'm kinda carrying the darn thing around with me. I *might* make something like a "medicine bag" to carry it in. A nice, lined, leather pouch with a flap cover and something to secure the flap against inadvertently dumping the contents (like... in case you like to fly upside down or something...). Even just a couple small dots of velcro would work.
Still waiting for my Note4 to arrive, but it's about the same size as my Note3. I wear a lot of cargo pants, so there's no problem there, however on those occasions where I need to dress more formally I'll put it in my front pocket or the inner pocket of a suit jacket. Girls have it easier on this one, purses hold a lot, but I'm not yet ready to give in and start carrying one, I'll leave that to my wife.
My old boss carried his Note2 (same size) on a belt holster, I would consider doing that when I'm in uniform (people expect stuff hanging off your belt then), but the uniform has cargo pockets so I don't need to. Without the uniform people don't expect cell phones on belts any more.
