[Q] The real outcome for Apple v. Samsung - Galaxy S III General

After reading and panicking about the possibility of losing key features on my phone I seem to have come across a common consensus, the case will be appealed and most likely patents probably nullified. Now this is all speculation of course and take it with a grain of salt, but this seems to be the only documented effect from this case (read below article)
https://plus.google.com/u/0/114476892281222708332/posts/246srfbqg6G
so stop panicking my friends

Whatever the outcome I could never, NEVER go back to to an iPhone now. Far to inferior for my needs as a serious smartphone user, even with jb some things were still to long winded.

Something about his story doesn't ring true. He sounds like he's getting paid to post this stuff.
Are we really supposed to believe that four lots of people all commented in the exact same manner, in the presumably very short time that he was in Starbucks?
Load of fud!

Nice article, never imagine this market behaviour.. very interesting.

But same M.O. like when Iphone 4 was about to hit market, really? Either they are stupid by loosing the phone again or they think people is stupid to fall on the same history. Either way, they are stupid.
At first thought I took it as more proof for marketing 'hype,' much like before. But lack of information leads me to believe otherwise and the practices, or supposed actions, just sound too sketchy. Dunno what to think, but from what I've heard about them trying to look into it, sounds pretty damn sketchy / ****ed up.
supersonic
who cares if a prototype gets released. lol. maybe the prototype will get beta tested this time instead of us getting screwed by a defective iphone 4. lol. everyone remember? Apple tells us "you're holding the phone wrong!" that's why the signal sucks. HAHAHAHA
My attention was more on how Apple's investigators lead the "suspect" to believe that they were police officers, and then questioned his family's immigration status as if to threaten him.
I don't even know if they actually lost the prototype or not. It's fairly rare for someone to lose their phone, at least in respect to the entire population of people with cell phones. I doubt that there are very many people with these prototypes, and yet prior to the release of the last two models someone has lost theirs. I would think that it's something that you would guard even more closely than your own phone. That, paired with the fact that Apple wouldn't file a formal report, makes me believe that the situation has been generated to gain publicity.

I dont buy Apple products because of Apple's behavior, not because of their products.
That is my point Jane. Is your market that bad that you have to make up a story?

You would think that if this is apples ploy to gain anticipation for the phones next release, they coulda came up with something else besides last years 'mistake' but episode 2.

Will the Apple/Samsung patent trial impact you at all?

There is at least a possibility that the patent case will be decided against Samsung, so that products that are similar to the iphone, as decided by a judge who seems receptive to Apple arguments, may be removed from the market by Apple.

What do you think that would mean both for the Epic and for future Android phones?

First, a lot of Samsung fans will not switch to Apple, so Apple's profits won't benefit.
Second, if the impact is large enough, Samsung could face financial troubles, which will be passed on to the consumers, at least to some degree.
As a possible third result, Apple will realize that they are a part of that consumer base, when the iPhone components produced by Samsung suddenly become more expensive
This would probably cause iPhone prices to increase, ultimately resulting in Apple screwing themselves

Apple can turn into a squirrel and come get deez nutz
So far the only impact it had was telling me that Epic 4g was the best selling postpaid samsung android phone of all time
Other then that, at worst Samsung is going to receive a fine. I don't think the courts plan to do any form of mass ban due to disruptions it might cause economically.
For one Apple has yet to actually prove damages.
I should clarify, my thoughts are what I consider to be the worst case scenario - the point was that, at worst, Apple will be hurting themselves more than Samsung or end users, because I don't know anyone that has ever said, "Well, they won that frivolous lawsuit, so their product must be better, right?"
Even if Apple succeeded in tanking every Android manufacturer (which will never happen, but if they did...), too many Android fans are also Apple haters - we'd go back to feature phones or older before we cross over to the iDark Side

Isn't this a jury trial? It is too early to tell because samsung has not had a chance to present their defense.
Edit:
Samsung just won a big win,
http://www.engadget.com/2012/08/13/...al-galaxy-s-and-s-ii-galaxy-ace-from-lawsuit/
By excluding these, Apple has to redo their reference material that uses the international SGS models. This makes proving trade dress violation much harder for Apple.

Samsung loses court case, >$1B

According to USA Today, Samsung lost the vast majority of the substantial patent violation issues in the CA suit with damages of over $1B awarded to Crapple.
Unfortunately, it looks like Samsung is in pretty deep poo just about now. It won't affect OG Epic users, as we are using EOL hardware. But for those of us considering upgrades it might have some impact. I'm thinking long and hard about buying an SGS3 or any other Sammy product right now. They are going to be a mess for at least a year while all of this patent stuff gets worked out.
Anyone else have thoughts on what kind of impact this might have?

I just want to get a Samsung Captive Glide, switch to Net10/Straight Talk, and call it a day. I have no idea what this means as far as downloading or updating apps or updating the system specs or whatever. But that's all I want until the NEXT powerful Android with a keyboard comes out.
Right now I just have the Epic 4G, and when I get $500 I'll get the Captivate Glide. I hope by then nothing hinky happens when I try to activate then unlock it.
The only effect it will have will be Apple's attempt to go after companies like Motorola & HTC. Pinch-to-Zoom is on every android device, I think and they will most likely use this victory to add fuel to their nuke android campaign.
There will be a lot of change to the android software and a lot of change android phone designs that are rectangular.
And last F*** Apple.
As bad as this could be for Samsung, look at it this way, they could come up with something more innovative than apple ever will. Maybe Samsung will be the first manufacturer to use mini-projectors in mobile devices and follow through with those plans. (And patent designs before release)

Well Samsung has been attacking apple for a while on purpose. Look at the adapter module for their chargers looks just like the iPhone Version. And the phone icon looks just like the iOS version. That's about it.No reason to sue its all about advancing technology. I think apple is just trying to get rid of competition. I love Samsung, I love iOS. But I think I'm loosing respect for apple as $1B is a slap in the face. Instead of tearing a company down by suing them. Apple could just make a phone 10X better and Then Samsung would do the same. It would be a continuous loop. That's competition. OH AND APPLE SAMSUUNG PHONES LOOK NOTHINHG LIKE YOUR SMALL 3.5" SCREEN DESIGN.

How much different can a phone icon look and still be recognized as a phone icon? Was apple the first company ever to make something rectangular with rounded edges? Were they the first to make a user interface with squares? How can they patent this stuff and sue over it? Its the most generic stuff. Ridiculous. And they sued their largest partner, who makes about 90% of the components in the iPhone/iPad. Apple seems to be done innovating. They take features from Android and then try to make them sound revolutionary. Then, they sue the companies actually innovating and make their products delayed or taken off shelves. The iPhone 1 was revolutionary and really made the smartphone market the way it is today (everyone has one, not just geeks or business people). But they haven't done anything since then. They've made the camera better, screen a bit better, and changed processor.

While it sucks they did lose, I do hope it doesn't result in a takedown of major phones. Samsung has been releasing some interesting stuff, and I really do want to hold out on getting a new one 'till they come out with a new slider. I can't imagine what I'd choose if Samsung's development was hindered because of this stupid ordeal.

Blind loyalty is dangerous. HTC rushed the launch of the One X and had tons of problems with it. The DNA/Butterfly seems to be faring better. An all-metal mobile device with multiple radios/antennas is a risky move. Every manufacturer that tried it before (including Apple) has had wireless issues. Based on that, victory rallies and celebration for both HTC and the One should be held off until after it’s been in people's hands for a few months. HTC’s never had any issues with hyping their devices but sometimes that hype has been ahead of the actual device/functionality. So the One could be a turning point for them (I hope it is) or its forum could light up with issues like the One X's did. It's way too early to call.
As for the SGS4. Samsung has a multi-billion dollar chip business and spends billions on R&D specifically for that division. To launch the SGS4 which should sell upward of 50MM units with a competitors SoC is asinine and that SoC would be used for a year's worth of production. Same thing applies to moving to LCD with their huge investment in AMOLED. For them to launch a "me too" device that mirrors the One and XZ would be marketing suicide and they know that. Most of the rumors everyone's picking up originated with Samfirmware which is hardly a reliable source based on their track record. If I was betting, I'd go with the SGS4 having a Samsung SoC and SAMOLED display in addition to other new features not on competitive phones. We'll see in three weeks.
yea i think we need to remind those defect figures were only in the first three months or so after a couple of month build quality picked up immensly
but BarryH is right, early adopters oftern burn
that being said, i think HTC experimented with the DNA/Butterfly well enough to prepare for this launch
this leaves the metal casing, i don't think anything can go awfully wrong just dont hug it and expect signal
There is one big difference to the One X launch
the One X was HTC's first polycarbonate unibody, in metal they are experts, and the One X was really rushed even shipped with freaky unfinished software, the HTC One seems to have been cooking for quiet a while and they are already pretty experienced with those chipsets
So many freaking amazing things about these phones. The decision is becoming waay tough.

Don't forget the loudest voices are always the complainers, reading about issues reported here shouldn't be an indicator as to how good a device is, is just where the highest concentration of people who DO have an issue will go to report it.
Even the reviews on amazon could tell you there are much more people happy with the device than there are unhappy customers

Post reported, this is a useless thread.
I'm glad I didn't buy a Nexus 7 2013...
Oh wait - I did - two of them - both had the GPS defect. Both returned...
BUT!
I'm waiting to get the Nexus 7 2013 LTE because - and our unhappy non-camper would have known if he'd read ALL the posts - the unhappy ones AND the follow up resolution - the GPS issues have been mostly resolved. The touch screen issue seems under control as well. And unlike the 2012 model, the 2013 lets you tether things to your Nexus 7.
As usual, it's easy to get stuck on the extremes: people who just complain and people who don't want to hear it. Complaints are necessary (when valid) because it puts public pressure on companies to fix their problems and do the right thing. I've long suspected that ASUS' horrible handling of the Transformer Prime fiasco stemmed in part from the negation of the negative comments by people who were essentially cheerleading for ASUS.
And while it's true that a person having a bad experience with a product is more likely to complain than a person having a good one is likely to praise it publically (although I'd point out that that's very much not the case with say.. the iPhone or iPad), companies should realize this is why it's so very, very important to get it right out of the box - or fix it as fast as possible if that fails - or if all else fails, keep the channels of communications open to make sure that your customers know you're working on it.
ASUS gets this wrong far too often and this time, they damaged Google's rep in the process, but in all fairness - Google's closed lipped approach just make things worse.
It's easy to blame the victims here - maybe we should spend a little more time blaming the companies that can't even do basic QA?
OP we are glad you didn't buy it also......Thread Closed.
