I read about it a couple of days ago on CNN http://www.cnn.com/2011/TECH/mobile...n=Feed:+rss/cnn_topstories+(RSS:+Top+Stories)
Gives a little more information about Apple being its usual sketchy self.

But same M.O. like when Iphone 4 was about to hit market, really? Either they are stupid by loosing the phone again or they think people is stupid to fall on the same history. Either way, they are stupid.

At first thought I took it as more proof for marketing 'hype,' much like before. But lack of information leads me to believe otherwise and the practices, or supposed actions, just sound too sketchy. Dunno what to think, but from what I've heard about them trying to look into it, sounds pretty damn sketchy / ****ed up.
supersonic

who cares if a prototype gets released. lol. maybe the prototype will get beta tested this time instead of us getting screwed by a defective iphone 4. lol. everyone remember? Apple tells us "you're holding the phone wrong!" that's why the signal sucks. HAHAHAHA

My attention was more on how Apple's investigators lead the "suspect" to believe that they were police officers, and then questioned his family's immigration status as if to threaten him.
I don't even know if they actually lost the prototype or not. It's fairly rare for someone to lose their phone, at least in respect to the entire population of people with cell phones. I doubt that there are very many people with these prototypes, and yet prior to the release of the last two models someone has lost theirs. I would think that it's something that you would guard even more closely than your own phone. That, paired with the fact that Apple wouldn't file a formal report, makes me believe that the situation has been generated to gain publicity.

Does this behavior surprise you?
I dont buy Apple products because of Apple's behavior, not because of their products.

That is my point Jane. Is your market that bad that you have to make up a story?

You would think that if this is apples ploy to gain anticipation for the phones next release, they coulda came up with something else besides last years 'mistake' but episode 2.

No pay day yet. This is Sammy's way of confessing they have been trying to do it their way instead of please the customer for too long.
It still remains to be seen what they actually DO about it.
We all know what pathway good intentions paved =]
The bottom line is until sammy gets the carriers in line, and froyo gets released before its 1st birthday! People will rant with good reason. Btw gingerbread has been out for like 3 months! We have a top of the line device running an os from 2009. Honestly I love the hardware but I can't handle this bad os support.

Whoever even buys another Samsung flagship phone with the belief that they learned their lesson deserves what they are going to get and shouldn't complain anymore. If you haven't realized what their intent is, which is maximum profit with the least effort, while actually making it seem like they kind of care with PR rep's that promise things that they cant' actually commit to. INB4C
My friend asked me what phone he should buy, and looked at the Galaxy S2 and the Motorola Atrix. It was a no brainer which phone was the winner. Go Atrix! Pre-ordered and waiting! He was waiting for a nice dual core phone, but after the mess he has heard from me with Samsung, he said he definitely doesn't want to go through the same thing. To be honest, this crap is making me sick to my stomach just talking about anymore, cause we've all been crapped on, and it doesn't feel nice.
I'm not surprised in the least that Samsung would think that this meaningless gesture would diffuse this issue, but I'm honestly SHOCKED that "Xda leaders" would put any thought into this. I suspect they're making money off this, somehow.
This site has lost its way badly.
At least it's a start and shows Samsung at least recognizes they've pissed off some people. It's better than what they've been doing which has been a whole lot of nothing.

I HEARD... Samsung sent John to distract attention from the fact that they are currently in hostage negotiations with Sprint, the suitcase full of cash is in transit, and Noobnl has the code to unlock it, but he refuses to share it with anyone because he only cares about glory, so he is meeting John at sxsw to listen to crappy emo music and make the handoff. And THEN Sprint will begin work on adding SprintID and a new, improved, constant Nascar streaming app, which can in no way be turned off. Oh, and HTC assassins are waiting there to shoot Noob so that they can still claim that the EVO is the flagship phone, and artificially make supply of the phone backordered to give the impression to the common consumer that it is not a giant POS. Did I miss anything?

Here's to hoping open exchange of dialogue will soon become exchange of sources and binaries!
Honestly, this was my first Samsung phone in about ten years is so far, it's my last.
It's not the lack of Froyo, this is just a simple annoyance. What killed it is GPS that works like crap, barely functioning accelorometer, retarded hardcoded GPS accuracy refusal to do anything about these two issues. I have a bad feeling that the last bug isn't a bug at all, but an attempt to cover up poorly functioning GPS on this phone. If I was Colbert, I'd wag my finger at them.

Hi I'm samsungjohn, just wanted to let you guys know that I'm just using this pr to gain rank within the amsung corporation. I figured if I was able to convince everyone to stick with samsung and to keep buying samsung, that I will be soon promoted. In reality I am jus doing this for a job. I don't even own a samsung phone. I own an LG, but thank you for listening to me and allowing me to pull your strings....Public Actions speak louder than words....oh and by the way. The Truth Is What You Make It, and Who You get To Believe In It.
No worries I'm just poking fun at this all. If people have gotten offended by it then the truth lies within the offended. Lol
now if Samsung were to really/officially be changing fo the people they would skip over froyo and be the first to update every galaxy s series to gingerbread. Or at least get froyo out and gingerbread soon after.
And powers at be, feel free to delete or modify this if you like. I've already gotten past the point of anger, and this whole samsung update bs is just a joke to me now. Samsung makes great dumb phones but a smart phone is just isn't worth it.
Too late, too slow, too little.
Samsung unfortunately is still working on the feature-phone timelines. What they (and most other android phone makers, with the possible exception of HTC) seem to not quite understand is that these smartphones are true computers now, and need to be treated as such. The OS is an integral part of phone, perhaps the most important part, and people will not tolerate a company that refuses to update an OS that both has critical bugs (and yes, the GPS bug is a CRITICAL bug), and appears incapable of utilizing the hardware it's surrounded by. It's like Microsoft refusing to repair a Windows bug that kept all printers only printing in black and white. It's almost worse that the hardware is so good, and is being crippled by a poorly customized OS (like tantalus, nearby but unreachable relief is far worse than no possibility of relief at all).
It's going to take a really big step to mollify those that have been burned by this generation of samsung's smartphones. Samsung, if your listening. You've pissed off many of your most important phone buyers. These are the people who less tech-savvy people ask for advice on phones, and for every 1 XDA member offended by your apparent lack of desire to properly support your equipment, you probably lose at least 10 referral sales to companies like HTC.
My recommendation, at least open the source code for the devs to look at, and if you're having software quality problems (and that's the reason you can't get froyo out the door), invite some of the best devs to take a look at the proprietary modules that you're having problems with. Work with the community and you may maintain some degree of support for your next generation of phones. But keep trying to astroturf them, or worse yet, pull a Behold 2 on them, and watch out as your current market lead could easily change next generation.

Has anyone received any useful information from SamsungJohn?

That's economy not revenge. Us here at xda that care about getting timely updates are a really small % last year they sold the most android phones. They have the same goal this year. I think why they have slipped so far this year is they haven't released any cool phones yet ex... nexus s 4g not only that they still have 3 more quarters.

I agree with badboy on this one, combination of economy and lack of phone releases caused the single quarter drop.
As for my original question, i am trying to be an optimist and am hoping to find at least a few people that SamsungJohn helped.
Probably nobody. The questions they were forcing people to ask were more like, "What is the CEO's favorite pony color?" instead of the meat people were wanting here.
Why is everyone fed up with Samsung? They've given us FroYo and amazing hardware (we were top for quite awhile), only surpassed by dual core processors...
I'm glad with the support I've received and with the devs here no one should be complaining.
All the cool kids are doing it. Besides, if no one slams Samsung every 5 minutes we'd all look pretty stupid standing around holding pitchforks and burning brooms.
Personally I've never had any issue with Samsungs support. Releasing 2.2 within 6 months of release seemed pretty fast to me... and exactly what they said they would do (<6 months into a 24 month expected lifespan IS 'soon'). I have never had any unusual or abnormal deficiencies from the phone in any way.
Samsungs problems aren't with phones right now its the other stuff like LCD tvs. Updates have nothing to do with it even Apple seems to be falling a little(with there giant line of BS) so its probably more economy based

Samsung is only required to support their product for 6 months minimum, which means they didn't even have to release Froyo in the first place. And from my understanding, Samsung isn't the only manufacturer that has problems releasing updates.
Wait. How'd we get so far off topic? I thought we were talking about SamsungJohn, not Samsung.

I'd appreciated not being lumped in as a "basher". I have a legitimate complaint about not receiving feedback and resolution to my issues.
I purchased my phone back in September, in the almost 7 months I have owned this phone some of the issues have been fixed others have been ignored.
I have sent 3 emails since September to Samsung Customer Service and Technical support, none of them were answered. I called Samsung and was promised a call back that never came. SamsungJohn comes around and asks us for a bugs/issues list. He asked me to upload mine to google docs then never addressed any of the issues. He told me he worked directly with R&D yet could provide no information on upcoming bug fixes, could not even answer questions like "is the R&D team aware of or working on xxxx bug?"
I'm not a "basher", I am asking if anyone has received any help from SamsungJohn.
EDIT: twolostminds: both of my posts were directed at overstews comment about everyone being sore, neither were directed at your post, just to be clear.
Well like I said, I personally don't feel they did anything wrong regarding the updates, it is about typical for any product support. I think somebodies HTC got a super fast update and it got everyones panties in a wad.
If anything were to dissuade me from buying another Samsung, it would be the crappy attitude of the owner community online.... but I would really have to actually read the whine threads a bit more carefully before that ever happened.
Let me chime in here for a minute. I'm disappointed in this as well. What upset me was the fact that SamsungJohn was wanting to build an ongoing "partnership" with the people at XDA. To the best of my knowledge he is no longer around and there is no explanation as to whats going on.
I feel your frustration as I was made promises that never happened. I had received a PM from SamsungJohn asking for my contact information. I never expected to actually hear from him but I did. I was basically told that Samsung wants to help foster the development we are doing here and would like to help in any way they could. I'm sure I'm not the only one he contacted as they were reaching out to the developers in general. I was asked not to discuss the contents of the conversation so I won't. I was told that I could express Samsungs desire to make things right. I was told that if I needed anything to let him know and he would do what he could to get us what we needed in order to keep the development moving forward. I was aloud to say that much. He was supposed to contact me again to possibly set something Autism related up. I never heard back from him. I have made a few attempts to contact him and have not received anything in return.
When I spoke with him he seemed like a really nice guy and I think he really did want to help. I don't think any of this is his fault. I think the powers that be just decided to go in a different direction. I don't know anything other than what I heard directly from him. I never got the sense that he was stringing us along and I know for a fact that he was reading my blog.
My opinion is that things for whatever reason just didn't work out. I don't blame him for that it was probably completely out of his control. It would be nice to hear from someone in the "know" as to the status of the situation. I think it could have been handled better and with more transparency but it is was it is. I don't think anyone is to blame least of all SamsungJohn himself. I still hope to hear from him as I would love to partner with Samsung on some Autism related things.
I do believe that he was being straight up with us and at the end of the day things were out of his control and he has a job to do.
Hope this helps.

Hey John, if you read this just tell Samsung not to lock down their software and I'm sure you'll have a lot of repeat customers. You can also throw in that their devs aren't worth a damn and may want to consider outsourcing some of their work to a lot of the guys on these boards.
Personally I am not only disappointed and frustrated with both SamsungJohn and Samsung, but I feel used. He asked us as a community to help by creating list of issues and concerns. Many of us created very well thought out, detailed lists that included tremendous amounts of information including methods of recreating the issues. In exchange for our help they made vague promises of helping our community. SamsungJohn & Samsung took our hard work and information and promptly ignored us. I feel used.

http://www.engadget.com/2012/06/06/apple-calls-for-an-early-ban-on-samsung-galaxy-s-iii/
Cupertino believes the Galaxy S III violates at least two patents, one the data tapping patent that's also being leveled against HTC and the other a unified search patent that covers Siri; not surprisingly, Apple isn't keen on that strangely recognizable S Voice interface. A hearing was already scheduled for June 7th and is now taking on a new sense of urgency, at least in Apple's mind: it's arguing that the rumored nine million pre-orders (still unconfirmed) are evidence of the potential damage if the US court lets the dispute slide. Samsung has already said that the injunction call won't affect its rapidly approaching US launches. The company had better hope it's right, or it risks disappointing a lot of early pre-order customers.

Well, you had to know this was coming. S-Voice does sound exactly like Siri. Needs more cupcake answers to crazy questions though.
But seriously, Android has had voice commands for a long time before Siri. Maybe it didn't talk back to you, but at least if you said "Search for XXXX" it would just go ahead and do the search without some dumb robot lady saying, "Do you want me to search for XXXX?"
I watch my wife try to use Siri and the app becomes more and more useless every day. Almost every answer she gives now is "Would you like me to search for the answer to that?" Then my wife tells Sirii to go f#$% herself, and Siri says "Now now, that's not nice" lmao

No, apple did not invent voice actions - but really, samsung didn't have to make s-voice look like such a blatant rip-off of siri - right down to the glowing mic.
Just saying that it could have been designed differently.
I think it has something to do with those 9 million preorders of this beast! Apple used to be a great company until the stopped innovating (after the 1st iphone) and throw all their money to lawyers!
I'm sure Samsung knows what they are doing and prepared for this. They've been sued by Apple already, and making the SGS3 I'm sure they knew what they were doing when they made S Voice, etc.
What is data tapping? Do they mean toggling it?

Apple Wins a User-Interface Patent That Smartphone Copycats Should Fear

Today Apple was granted a patent for a possibly lucrative addition to its IP arsenal: a patent for its method of displaying documents, lists, and a whole manner of other things on a portable electronic device.

Are you kidding me?! Bunch of snooty babies it sounds like.
Apple are just a bunch of crybabies. End of story. All they're doing is suing other companies because they can't do anything else to beat them.
Yeah, if you guys haven't read Steve Jobs' Biography... Well let me tell you a little story.
I admired Apple when they released the first bunch of the iPhones, they were the only company innovating a "smartphone" which the consumers could get their hands on. I admired Jobs for who he was, what he had done. He was a legend in my eyes.
Then I read the biography and found out he was a huge ego-boosted douchebag.
the end.
are......you..... ****ing.......serious! so now apple can basically QQ towards the us courts about every phone with a multi touch interface android an possibly even windows mobile? ffs patents on gui's should never be passed cause lets face it almost all of them are the same in one sahpe or another with pc for instance you can go to windows/linux an have ui that are nearly identical (though scripted entirely different)
Crazy, huh? Xridder6 jobs was a spoke person, that's it. He was too stupid to take medical help, he stayed with his vegan crap and died. On a serious note this patent can be severely damaging. But apple didn't invent a touch screen. There's still hope. Like you guys said, they're attacking because they feel pressure. If you corner someone they will attack but guess what? They will win. That's us.

It's not that I don't like iPhones (i do prefer Androids) but its the fact that Apple is suing everyone that makes me hate them so much.
I like competition in the mobile market. It's good for consumers. Companies competing = cheaper devices for consumers.
As much as I would like everyone in the world to have an Android... I need someone to make fun of for owning a device that cannot compete with Android.
Android will take over the mobile market in the next decade or two if Apple doesn't quickly pull something innovative out of their asses.
I hear you, that's why I said we're getting put in a corner, Google will figure something out. We're too big to fail.

I am currently working to secure patents on symbols now such as #@&*% and $.
Everyone who posted in the thread owes me for their punctuation.

I patented letters.
Gimme yo' money
Dang it, I knew there was a loophole. See Google, there is always a way around or through the loophole. If college toaught me anything, it was there is always a work-around.
Rider, we'll call this one a wash financially, but maybe we should go into a company together. We can get a patent on sentences. Or if we want the big bucks, go straight to the top with paragraphs.
Samsung just put the smackdown on Apple.

Man I read that article last night and was laughing the entire way. Title fits whats in the article too. Samsung is putting on their rape gloves.
That made me laugh. X, you have a poetic way about you.
They want a 2.4% share of every product Apple sells (I think I read going rate was more like .4 or something like that).
Yesterday they asked for an ungodly amount fee for licensing their patents and Apple said No!
Gonna be a nasty court case that will change everything down the lines probably.
Woodrube no want to be IOS fanboy.

Wow that's annoying - its so freakin vague
the patents given in this country are complete bs. remember all the people who tried to trademark "Linsanity" when he blew up for Knicks? Hundreds of people want to make money off a fad selling tshirts and ****. wonder who got won that one...
Wood rube thanks for the article, I read it with such concentration haha, its going to be a ball changer. Apple was just getting ridiculous, somebody had to stop them. Well scratch that I'm talking too soon.

Jury has found Samsung guilty

http://www.beginnerstech.co.uk/breaking-jury-have-reached-verdict-in-apple-v-samsung-patent-trial/
This is a joke the jury must have been texting on there iPhones

yeah, how pathetic.. i figured from the beginning the jury were likely apple fanboys.
what makes me more angry is how they allow a bunch of douche bags who have no experience in patents, etc. decide who is guilty?
Absolutely crazy

Apple from California, the Jury and court in California.
It was always going to go south for Samsung sadly.
An absolutely pathetic judgement which Samsung will appeal anyway.
More reason to boycott apple for life.
This is outrageous and insanely crazy, 1 billion is way too much for Samsung to pay.
I guess Google and android will be next. i used to like apple and their product but after these series of events, frankly im starting to resent the way they deal with these things and wish that google will blow them sky high.
Did apple know miui?

This is just the beginning, expect an appeal.
On the bright side, any changes coming out of this should only affect US customers so i'm not too worried.
Thankfully Europe isn't like America.

**Gasp**
An American court siding with a big American company?
This is a completely unprecedented result and no one was ever expecting this.
And now I'll saddle up my Pig and fly over to South Korea to let Samsung know never to sue Apple again because it's just a schoolyard myth that Apple are actually evil money mongerers.
Will the U.S. S3 now be banned? I am one week away from being able to order one!

This will simply inspire samsung to do more, you have done a big mistake rotten fruit!
Don't worry guys, Samsung won't pay a penny.
Everyone knows every feature or design on the iphone has been seen at least once on a different device.
They will appeal, and as stated - A U.S judge & and jury isn't gonna side against Apple.
Apple is god in America, most of their sales are there, here in the UK Apple isn't even the 2nd biggest phone supplier, never mind the first.
Rounded corners
Grid icons
Icon docks
Centre button
Full touchscreen
They have all been done before apple, and the fact they can patent such rubbish shows how biased that country is.
Not to mention the blatant infringements that Apple have, notification bar, dedicated background downloaded, WiFi sync, even their icloud, imap, siri, imessage etc are all copied features from other devices.
Why do I still get the feeling that all suppliers who actually do the creating & innovating are all gonna boycott apple....
Too many manufacturers, too many consumers are for Samsung, Google & Android & I really do believe that the Googarolla case against Apple is 'just the start'
The case means nothing really, was always gonna get an appeal - but it will bring all consumers, manufacturers etc closer together against Apple - no doubt about that. (everyone knew this result before it started, U.S legal system wouldn't do anything differently, the fact apple got away with everything even on clear infringements & copying just shows this)

Mainly it happened because how a court of America will give decision in favor of the the company which is not based in America.. People are getting crazy... Apple is just ruining its reputation in INTERNATIONAL market. may be the case is going in California but this is the freedom of internet which spreads the news.

Apples international market is already destroyed, last figures shown were just 16% global ios share - and U.S was no doubt a big part of that.
Googarolla is just the first of many lawsuits against Apple, be sure of that.

This is big problem for Samsung in US, most likely no tw and design changes if Samsung want to sell phones in us from now on.
An appeal is unlikely to succeed, the chance for that to happen is very low.
at least it's not the full 2.45 billion they were looking for.
..on another note- This has nothing to do with the Galaxy S3
I like the idea of Jury trials in principle but this case just how out of touch and self serving the US legal system really is.
Because what the Hell are12 random people expected to know about patent law? and how do you expect 12 people with no legal training to be anything but biased towards Apple when blind dumb patriotism is hammered into Americans as a kid with flags hanging out every window and now those people are expected to judge fairly against this Asian country where most Americans know so little about what's going on outside their own country they'll probably think Samsung is run by Kim Jong-Un.
The jury were all (I sheeps) . Honestly **** apple big time. It doesn't make any sense. Apple must be sued for drop down menu showing the recent apps n 10000 other.
