i hear a noise coming from inside the hardware not the software. it sounds like something grinding up in there.
Is anyone else experiencing this?
Is this damaging my phone?
Should I try to re-install it?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

A ROM does not make anything grind. I have been using this ROM for a while with no issues. Second, there shouldnt be any grinding anyway. There are no moving parts inside of a phone. I would get it replaced.

If you have something grinding in your phone, you've got a serious problem. You aren't using a phone, you're using a machine disguised as a phone. Phoned don't have moving parts in them. You better get rid of it

I know its not grinding.
It sounds like something grinding to me but I definitely am hear some noise coming from the hardware. After I first installed Virtuous Fusion everything seemed fine, but after a while it began making that noise so i turned it off and turned it on and it still made that noise. So now i am leaving it off until i have a solution.
If I can not obtain a solution then i will probably go back to royal ginger.

I don't think you're understanding us here. Virtuous Fusion does not cause phones to make a grinding noise. If it did, there would be a lot more people than just you experiencing it. There is a problem with your phone, not the ROM your phone is running. If there's a real hardware problem, you should have no trouble doing a warranty exchange.
Ok I see what you mean.

I think I understand what you guys mean but you see i got the mt4g when it first came out for t mobile back in November 2010. I have used it stock up until a month ago a friend of mine showed me his rooted mt4g running cm7.
So i began using Cm7 for a while than i seen Royal ginger had Netflix app(the only thing i really missed about my iPhone). I installed royal ginger and i like it but sense 3.0 looked really cool so i wanted to try it.
So i never heard a noise on stock, cm7 ,or RG and according to you guys the Rom cant be responsible so perhaps its a coincidence that after a 30 minutes of
Virtuous Fusion there was a hardware malfunction.

Are you sure you didn't have a YouTube video or a game in the background that didn't shut down the audio drivers.
The only moving parts in your phone are the buttons, and trackpad. Which have to be manually used. They will not grind on their own.
I would suggest wiping the phone and reinstalling your ROM to see if the "noise" comes back.
Well technically there has to be a moving part in the phone or it wouldnt vibrate. You dont feel any vibrations do you?

Let me rephrase that. No moving parts with gears. The motor for the vibrations has a weight attached to a shaft extruding from the body of the motor. It contains no gears that would create a grinding noise. And if the motor should go out it wouldn't make any noise.
The only thing that could of happened would be a piece of plastic or some other substance preventing the weight from rotating and he would hear it "bouncing" against the medium.

Update on Noise Issue
Hello everyone. First off, I'd like to thank you all for you help.
I ended up re-installing the ROM and I began using it for a day and I was pleased to not hear any noises from the hardware. But curiosity has got the best of me and I attempted and succeeded in recreating the conditions that caused the noise.
To create the noise I re-download all my apps from, turned on WiFi ,gps , Bluetooth, i change the brightness to all the way up, i change lock screen to photo album, and i changed the wallpaper to weather live wall paper and then it began making the nose again.
I would like to get my hands on on another MT4G to see if its just my device or something they all do. Also I'd like to get my hands on a video camera(I don't own one, I use my phone) to record it making the noise and post it to youtube or something for you guys to hear it.
After listening to it again I must say it sounds less like grinding and more like coffee brewing. Or rather like a mix of both. I don't know its weird.
EDIT: My phone no longer turns on. when a charger the red light comes on but the screen stays blank. I've tried removing and reinserting the battery and I've tried to hold down the volume key while pressing the power button to no avail.

A friend of mine who has the MT4G as well tried it out and it was the animation. Sorry for wasting everyone's time but the sound didn't seem to be coming out of the speakers to me.
I feel so stupid now but to fair my device was acting up when the noise came on. it became really laggy and sometimes unresponsive even after hitting the lockscreen button the noise wouldn't stop but it did with my friends phone. Also my device still won't turn on but I am doing a warranty exchange with t mobile. It must have been a coincidence.
Hey everyone, I just got my N7 in the mail and I was thrilled to finally play around with it as I'm sure we all were. However I've noticed the quality of the external speaker is really really bad.
First off I have to turn the volume almost halfway up before I can even hear anything, and in a quiet room too. As I turn the volume up I can hear a lot of static and just crackling noises, I'm pretty sure I received a bad unit :/
Even attempting to listen to the transformers movie I can hardly make out a line of dialog, music sounds terrible as well.
I've been looking around and I haven't seen anyone else mentioning this sort of thing, does anyone else have this issue? I managed to find one video on YouTube comparing the speaker of the N7 with other devices and it sounds noticeably better than mine.
*UPDATE*
I've just received an email back from the play store complete with custom checkout link to order my new N7 at no charge. Provided of course the defective unit is returned within 21 days, or I'm charged for the new one. they've provided the necessary shopping label to print out and use for the return as well. So here's hoping the new one will be in perfect working order.

That's what I was afraid of, doesn't seem like anyone else has issues with it. Hopefully it doesn't become some huge hassle to replace. Especially if they're still filling pre-orders who knows how long it'll take to get back.

I just got off the phone with Google play, they've had reports of this already and no questions asked they're sending out a replacement within 24hrs. At least that's what they told me, no fuss, and no muss. Speakers f'd up, ok we'll send a new one out. It was that easy.
So while yes it's disappointing it isn't that bad because you'll get to keep the defective unit to toy with until your replacement arrives. So no Nexus withdrawal for the time being. The only issue is waiting on the phone long enough to get through. Make it past that and you're golden.

I have the same exact problem with the speaker on my nexus 7. I called Google yesterday and told them about my problem. The guy had me do a factory reset, which obviously was not gonna solve the problem. He then told me that I would be emailed by a specialist within the next 48 hours about what to do next. I have not gotten an email yet. I really wish they would just send me a new one. I feel like it may be weeks before I have a new one.
Same issue here
I tried calling earlier today and ran out of time and had to hang up before i got through. called again a few minutes ago and i was only on hold for about a minute. The guy i spoke with said he had to escalate it as a DOA and i should hear back in the next couple of days via email.
Seems like they are actively working to fix their service issue. i got an email confirming that it was being escalated and the email states that if something else occurs to me i can just reply back to that email and it was be filed away to the specialist dealing with me. that is pretty nice.
now i just wait and just use it with headphones or a BT speaker.
I too have this, was working day one, then the next in the middle of the afternoon it went bad and crackly. Damn.

It took me almost an hour to get through, I actually just plugged in some headphones and went about my day at work while on hold. Just keep at and they'll pick up eventually.
As of now I haven't heard anything else back as far as a new device making its way out to me. I did receive the same email though about my call being forwarded to a specialist to handle everything.

Crackling, Distortions at higher than 1/2 volume
Mine gets distorted and crackly above 1/2 volume. It's especially noticeable when listening classical music at FULL volume.
Can you guys test this out and see if this is a problem for you? Or is it just crappy speakers that everyone has?

Mine came fine and worked perfect at full volume. Then the next day it all of a sudden started to act up and sound weird when you get above 75%. I am going to RMA, I'm waiting for the email from the tech.
Replaced device has Crackling speaker!
It maybe just my bad luck but I just got my replacement device today (first one had dead pixels), and right when i turned it on i could faintly hear a crackling in the speakers. Am I able to get a second replacement device? I really don't want to go through the hour long calling waits again lol.
ok first of all my n7 had a speaker problem, the left speaker sounded terrible with sounds coming out of it. so i took of the back and tried a method that was on here which was to slightly press around the defected speaker until it pop in or something like that. any way i tried what is said and it pop in back and now no sound what so ever is coming out of the left speaker. but im quite satisfied with the one speaker. it isn't as load as both together but its close to it. so should i still get a replacement? thats was the only problem i had with me n7.
thanks for your time

I'd get it exchanged. Somehow, mic's vibration gets transmitted to the body of the device.

No buzzing, but I did notice that it vibrates like crazy.
Looks like it has something to do with how the watertight seal keeps the backing a few mm away from the actual back of the phone.
Make sure it's all clipped down properly.
The quick start manual actually states that due to watertight seal there are vibrations...

Same issue with me also the headphones make a noise in silent situations. Mine is from amazon and black and verizon. I Have done alot of reading about this as I'm within my 14 days for return it happens on alot of g3s really all of them or most anyway however to different extents and some people don't notice some do. I let a few of my friends use my phone asked after they used if they heard the sound. Some did some didn't but its there. Anyway it is not a hardware issue its a software issue lg is aware of the issue it will be fixed in 4.4.4 they claim. Also T-mobile users that have installed CM and custom 4.4.4 roms have said the issue disappeared afterwords. I cannot say this is fact however (as I haven't done this) I have seen many people say they took there device back and had it exchanged some as many as 4 times they all do it. Also the headphone issue is the same this entire issue is on the top 8 lists for cons of the g3 on alot of sites just wrote different ways. The ticking is the same thing I have extremely good hearing (I can hear a tire leak from 10ft away) and if you listen real close and turn your volume down all the way (well as low as it goes in call) so the buzz isnt as strong its also ticking
The silver lining is that lg is aware and is working on a fix this issue and the headphone issue are one in the same instead of your wording try goggle g3 hissing sound and you will find many posts about it. It sucks very bad once you notice it it will drive you insane I feel your pain.
I have a feeling as seen with my friends that people that say there phone doesnt make the noise are wrong but not intentionally. As it is a very strange pitch and low level sound some can not hear those types of sounds or it less noticeable to some. This is a long proven science theory some pitches can be heard by some and not others I believe that is what is happening. The same 2 friends that cant hear on my phone also cant hear coil whines (they happened to be with me when I got a very bad coil whining psu it was making my ears bleed they couldn't hear it.) which is what this sounds like to me anyway.
