N7 with defective speaker? - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey everyone, I just got my N7 in the mail and I was thrilled to finally play around with it as I'm sure we all were. However I've noticed the quality of the external speaker is really really bad.
First off I have to turn the volume almost halfway up before I can even hear anything, and in a quiet room too. As I turn the volume up I can hear a lot of static and just crackling noises, I'm pretty sure I received a bad unit :/
Even attempting to listen to the transformers movie I can hardly make out a line of dialog, music sounds terrible as well.
I've been looking around and I haven't seen anyone else mentioning this sort of thing, does anyone else have this issue? I managed to find one video on YouTube comparing the speaker of the N7 with other devices and it sounds noticeably better than mine.
*UPDATE*
I've just received an email back from the play store complete with custom checkout link to order my new N7 at no charge. Provided of course the defective unit is returned within 21 days, or I'm charged for the new one. they've provided the necessary shopping label to print out and use for the return as well. So here's hoping the new one will be in perfect working order.

That's what I was afraid of, doesn't seem like anyone else has issues with it. Hopefully it doesn't become some huge hassle to replace. Especially if they're still filling pre-orders who knows how long it'll take to get back.

I just got off the phone with Google play, they've had reports of this already and no questions asked they're sending out a replacement within 24hrs. At least that's what they told me, no fuss, and no muss. Speakers f'd up, ok we'll send a new one out. It was that easy.
So while yes it's disappointing it isn't that bad because you'll get to keep the defective unit to toy with until your replacement arrives. So no Nexus withdrawal for the time being. The only issue is waiting on the phone long enough to get through. Make it past that and you're golden.

I have the same exact problem with the speaker on my nexus 7. I called Google yesterday and told them about my problem. The guy had me do a factory reset, which obviously was not gonna solve the problem. He then told me that I would be emailed by a specialist within the next 48 hours about what to do next. I have not gotten an email yet. I really wish they would just send me a new one. I feel like it may be weeks before I have a new one.

Same issue here
I tried calling earlier today and ran out of time and had to hang up before i got through. called again a few minutes ago and i was only on hold for about a minute. The guy i spoke with said he had to escalate it as a DOA and i should hear back in the next couple of days via email.
Seems like they are actively working to fix their service issue. i got an email confirming that it was being escalated and the email states that if something else occurs to me i can just reply back to that email and it was be filed away to the specialist dealing with me. that is pretty nice.
now i just wait and just use it with headphones or a BT speaker.

I too have this, was working day one, then the next in the middle of the afternoon it went bad and crackly. Damn.

It took me almost an hour to get through, I actually just plugged in some headphones and went about my day at work while on hold. Just keep at and they'll pick up eventually.
As of now I haven't heard anything else back as far as a new device making its way out to me. I did receive the same email though about my call being forwarded to a specialist to handle everything.

Crackling, Distortions at higher than 1/2 volume
Mine gets distorted and crackly above 1/2 volume. It's especially noticeable when listening classical music at FULL volume.
Can you guys test this out and see if this is a problem for you? Or is it just crappy speakers that everyone has?

Mine came fine and worked perfect at full volume. Then the next day it all of a sudden started to act up and sound weird when you get above 75%. I am going to RMA, I'm waiting for the email from the tech.

Replaced device has Crackling speaker!
It maybe just my bad luck but I just got my replacement device today (first one had dead pixels), and right when i turned it on i could faintly hear a crackling in the speakers. Am I able to get a second replacement device? I really don't want to go through the hour long calling waits again lol.

Sure do. And the screen issue and the tablet turning off while charging overnight issue. I have emailed google to see if I can get a replacement, but no response yet. The speaker issue seems to be alleviated by using the Equalizer App from the play store. I use the Jazz Preset and it seems to work. But still, unacceptable.

Yes, I have the same issue with crackling noise at higher volume levels. Not sure if this is really a defect or just a cheap speaker problem.

That's what I'm thinking. Speaker is very scratchy on mine above half volume, but I've got no dead pixels or screen lifting. Worried I'll get one that's worse!
Mine had a lot of distortion, though only on certain sounds/music above about 70% volume. After using the Equaliser app and tweaking the settings a bit it sounds much better.
Again, if this is a defect or just a really cheep speaker (I think the latter), no one really knows.

The one I just got at any volume there is popping, cracking, distortion, you name it. Speaker is definitely blown. And this was right out of the box.
Currently on hold with Google going to get an RMA.

Yep, that's how mine is too. Can't stand even having the speaker on at all. It even scratches with the typing sounds.
I agree with others, I am nervous that the new one I get tomorrow will have all the issues I am reading about. Because the one I have now is perfect, except the crappy speaker. No other issues at all. I almost decided to keep it and try to fix it myself, but if the issue is something more than a simple fix I would make things worse.
I'll let everyone know tomorrow after 6pm (thats when UPS comes to my place) if I got a good one or not...

I got my new N7 today, and so far everything seems perfect. The speaker sounds good (well as good as the speaker can sound). There is no screen lift , and I see no dead pixels or anything bad with the screen.
I returned my old one to the Staples location about 3 miles away, and this was their first return (and I bought it online). They said they got 1000 16gig ones and 1500 8gig ones, and they had one 8gig left.
Now time to unlock, root, and TiBu backup...

My speaker is blown as well and I'm very annoyed! On the phone with Goog now....hopefully the RMA process goes smoothly and I don't receive a unit with a diff set of problems. I purchased mine at Sams Club, but with them not having it in stock anymore, no sense in going back to them.
Edit:

I'm going to call them when they open and PRAY that they have at least one in stock so that I can swap it out. I would hate to have to return it and then wait for it to go back in stock! Worst part is that I just put on the full body protector from XtremeGuard!
They shipped my replacement yesterday, about 12h after accepting my RMA link. I really hope the replacement is better than the one I have.

I was really impressed with Staples easy return/exchange policy. As good as Target/Walmart/Amazon. Its nice not to have to wait for hours on the phone for support.. I hope Google uses this as a learning experience and ups their support times. BTW, I bought 3 N7's (one for me, my gf, and my mother and only mine had any issues, before the exchange that it...).

Constant buzzing in earpiece during calls

As the title says, there's a constant static. Will changing earphones help? Or it a problem with phone itself like review sites say? Is there any solution because this static makes conversation impossible which pretty much defeats the purpose of the phone. If I get RMA will others phones also have this defect?
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 2
Also noticed that static goes away when I cover the speaker with something.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 2
I have static in my earpiece with the default in call volume (which is all the way up). When I turn the volume down some I don't have it and the volume is still plenty loud. I'm not sure if it's the same noise your having.
Not sure if problem is same as yours. Noise is kinda like static which you hear in electrical interference. Something like the sound you hear from PC speaker when your phone is near it and you get a call or SMS that time. That kind of sound constant goes up and sometimes down randomly but its almost there all the time while using earpiece only, not without it. Funny thing is when I cover up the back side speaker with my hand that static goes away. Its really strange I don't know what's going on. Never had anything so irritating and unbearable on my previous galaxy s2
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 2
Known nexus 4 issue. If it's not loud enough, I recommend you to just keep it and ignore it. If it's really loud, try RMA. Mine also buzzes but I just ignore it. People think that it is due to poor shielding or something

I have the same problem. I will be asking for a replacement, because if people just accept it, it will never get fixed. This is a defect.
This is an old issue. One of the first since the N4 came out. I have always wondered if it is a noise cancellation feature gone bad. Like the buzzing wasn't meant to be so loud, but for one reason or another just got a little stronger than what it was supposed to be.

I think I agree with others that its a hardware issue because when I keep my hand on speaker the problem goes away. Plus I talked to a couple of people who said they had their phones replaced up to 3 times!! And still ended up with a defective piece. Very bad on googles part, I would have been happier to pay more but at least get a reliable device in return. I had my phone imported so RMA will be hell for me and even after that there is no guarantee. Just sad on googles part, just sad.

[Q] Which batch of Nexus 4 has the buzzing sound?

Hello everyone,
I was just curious about which batch of Nexus 4's DON'T have the static/buzzing sound.
If you don't have the static/buzzing sound, I would request you to post your Nexus 4 date of delivery.
For those who DO have the static/buzzing sound, tell us what is it exactly like and when did you receive you Nexus 4.

Phones from all batches have it. It's like white noise. And I have to press the phone hard against my ear to hear it and even then it's not like it's a hindrance.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 2
Ordered mine on Dec. 3, Received Jan 4. Buzzing and static sound during calls is there. I requested a replacement. Keeping my fingers crossed as I expect a $350 phone to perform as well as my previous $150 phone...meaning no static/buzz noise.
I have the slight buzzing noise when the phone is pushed on my ear..
Should i bother sending it in now ? I don't want to be without the phone so I can wait maybe send it in later under warranty as the rest of the phone is good, no heating issues or anything, so i can live with the static sound as I don't spend alot of time with the phone off pusing it against my ear lol

He is probably referring to the revision number. Check your bootloader.
both rev 10 and rev 11 have it. also is there a rev 12 now? i havent looked
I have revision 10 and I dont notice any buzzing sound...
where/when does the sound occur?
I have buzzing when listening to audio through headphones...
So not sure if this is the same problem you are referring to but when I engage any audio, even if the volume is at 0% I can hear a constant staticlike clicking buzzing sound.
I have etymotic in ear headphones that seal and block a lot of outside noise which I guess accentuates this issue.
Anyone else getting the same problem...

[Q] Weird noises from phone

Hi!
I'm sorry if this is really long and confusing, I just want to try and explain as best as I can. If anyone is experiencing similar issues or just have some input I would love to hear it.
I bought a G2 (International version) about a week ago and have some issues with noises being heard from the call speaker (can be heard on the top backside also) even when not in a call and the screen being off.
I've read a bunch of posts about people complaining about the sound quality during calls, I would say mine was not horrible but not great either. I don't make a whole lot of calls on my phone so I didn't really notice it at first, until a couple of nights ago when I kept hearing this weird high pitched noise that I couldn't figure out where it came from. I don't have super hearing or anything, but I do hear the noise some chargers sometimes make when they're plugged into an outlet, highly annoying. Picked up my phone (from about 1 meter away) and that's where the noise was coming from.
I first thought it was the actual speaker making the noise but the noise is the same on the backside of the phone around the camera area.
There's the high pitched sound, some faint hissing, some dial-up modem like sounds and a lot of click click click..cliiiick's.
I do have pretty weird cell reception here, in one place it can be full and if I move it 1 cm it drops to 1 bar and so on.
I also noticed the phone got very hot up top. I wasn't doing all that much on the phone, had the browser open, played candy crush and wordfeud for like 5 minutes, checked my email.. normal stuff. Got a phonecall and when I put the phone against my ear it was really uncomfortably hot. Not burning hot or anything but definitely not something I want to speak in for more than 5 seconds. I checked the battery temp and it said 36 C, but the top of the phone was wayy hotter than the bottom part. This was at night so screen brightness was set to 0.
I let it cool down and ran Antutu just to see how hot it would go to, it peaked at 47 C and again the top part of phone was a lot hotter than the bottom part. The sound can be heard when it's quiet during the day too. I tried a factory reset but the sound was still there.
I took it back to the store and wondered if I got a defect phone or something. The guy at the store pretty much tried to brush me off. He did try to reproduce the problem and took the phone back behind but said he couldn't hear it in a "soundproof" room.
His colleague said "well phones do get hot when playing games". But really, shouldn't the G2 be able to handle the same things I normally did on my oold phone (HTC Incredible S) with no issues at all?
The sound can not be heard from any other phone I've tried to hear it from (my old phone, various Galaxy S3's and 4's, iPhones, Nexus 4 or the Galaxy Trend plus I bought so I would have a phone while the G2 is on service).
Those of you who have issues with crappy signal/reception and have normal hearing; can any of you hear it making sounds even while the screen is off?
If you made it all the way through that; thanks for taking the time to read! Any input you have would be greatly appreciated as it's not so much fun to feel like a annoying nagging customer when raising the issues at the store. I think the phone is fantastic, save for those issues!
Return it for replacement. Definitely not normal. Especially that hot. This phone stays cooler than my Spectrum. I get no sound static or audible noise less I'm on call, ect. Sounds like voltage leak, and into the speakers. Never uncomfortable at ear after an hour of games. Demand a replacement.

I already made a thread about the noise. The last lg phones have it. All nexus 4... you can check the threads...
And also this one. Once heard cannot be unheard.
Some ppl do not hear it. Some ppl do not wanna hear it.
What I read from N4 the intensity of the noise can differ...But am not sure about that. Mine n4 from us had it. And a brand new that a friend bought few week back from eu the same...
But a replacement won't do a thing. No one said oh, New device fixed it. Max they did. Oh, it's better. They also said that the issue can become worse in time.
It's just the quality control sucks in the dept from lg...
Anyway. When you exchange it. Let me know if the new device is better.

I was expecting the store to replace it with a new one on the spot, it was only a week old. But since they couldn't "reproduce" the problem they had to send it to the service center. It's nice to know that at least I'm not being super annoying and complaining about things that are "normal". I did wonder why no one complained about the top part getting hot. I have hats, don't need an ear-warmer!
Thanks!

I did search for similar threads but found nothing that matched my issues with noises during idle.
I am soo glad to hear that I'm not the only one with the issue, or that I'm imagining things! I don't have much hope of the new one being better, which I told them at the store. If it persists with the new one I'm returning it. I was contemplating getting the Nexus 5 instead of the G2. I didn't notice the sound on the Nexus 4, but maybe it was fainter than on the G2. So does the Nexus 5 also have this issue?
If it gets worse with time I'll probably end up getting annoyed at some point.
I'll let you know if the new one is better. but that won't happen for at least 3 weeks. I'm guessing a month and a half with it being xmas and all that.

Search in the N4 threads for static noise.
Btw, sometimes it's harder to hear, depends on the environment.
I bet N5 has the same issue...
As said, many do not wanna hear it.... And some even can't (doesn't mean it's not there...)
Btw I am fighting with myself too. If I should claim warranty or let it be... But sometimes it's pretty annoying. Mostly in calls in the silent periods. And sometimes I do not perceive it.
I got the g2 in hope that the n4 bug will be fixed.... One thing though in N4 it was worse.
Edit: some theory I remember. Said to have something to do with the data transfer. So in N4 they made "fixes" with tasker for calls with data WiFi Off during call and on after etc.
Btw if you really can hear from that far you really can have good hearing or really defect device... I can hear mine only ear next to it. Same as N4

Oh interesting, found lots of posts on the N4 board.. guess I didn't use the magic combo of words to get any relevant hits when I searched before I posted.
Yeah, the guy at the store definitely didn't even want to hear it. It's also hard to prove the sound is actually there. I mean how do I prove that I can actually hear the noise? I dearly would love to be able to keep this phone and live with the noise, but not combined with the top part acting like a stove. If I can't convince the store guys that there is something wrong with it and LG won't hear of it I guess I'm looking at a Samsung instead :/
PAGOT said:

Um, actually I exchanged my first device with a new one and it is gone. I was super sensitive to the sound although my cousin and the best buy guy could not hear it. I was exactly as OP described. Totally gone.
The one difference in the two phones is the first one I received needed to receive updates out of the box and the second one already had the updates. So i'm assuming the first was from an older batch of phones.
PS THIS IS A VERIZON DEVICE!!!!
OP I would suggest swapping it out. It doesn't hurt to swap it out and get a new one. If it still does it your only out a few minutes of time.

That is actually good news. If it's really gone. Am bit skeptical, coming from countless threads, and some devices on my own in N4.
Well another thing I remember was that some ppl reported like you over the N4. Issue gone. And then few weeks after a re-post. "It's back"
Let's hope that does not happen though.
How long you have it already?

I mean the screeching noise on my first device was constant. From the time I got it on day one. I just thought maybe it was me, or it was just something kind of temporary etc.. My girlfriend even made jokes about how I was getting old (im about to turn 25 lol) and its just my hearing. As soon as I got the second device it stopped. I was told it is probably a resistor or something like that making more noise than it should. I dont know.
I've had the second device for about two weeks or so.

This sounds encouraging... so maybe it will be fixed on mine when I get it back? Store would not hear of just swapping it out for a new one on the spot so I'm stuck waiting.
usually when you hear hissesbits bad reception, but sometimes its bad simcard and rarely some hobbyist or secret agency listening in. Try elimination apps also, some could interfere somehow when trying to setup a tap
try different sim/network just in case, note different sim will erase some stuff
I forgot the obvious, liquid, damp environments like shower can break microphones or speakers or cause previously isolated components to leak into another

Yeah. No. That what we spoke of, is well documented and reported in N4.
Allegedly it's a shielding issue and as someone said the speaker or some other part is picking up static etc.
(Continued with data activity)
As said it's also on idle when screen of, phone sleeping....
The showering would make sense if they would do it by default in LG factories
Same goes with aps.
But there are 2 issues that are reported for G2. One i think is the call quality for Verizon I think that maybe can be fixed with a software update.
And then there is this. It's static noise, crackling, etc which can be heard "anytime". It's feint, but there. Where it's annoying for me is in the silent parts of a call, when no one talks and my ear is near the device.
Sent from my LG-D802 using Tapatalk
actually just get a glass, or look at the mirror when you showered and how much condense is on it. then think, could that condense form on/in phone, you'd be amazed your microphone/speaker etc etc
Sonys strategy should be copied by all phone manufacturers

Where did you get it and how long ago?
When I spoke to Verizon they said that it is considered a manufacturer defect and that it would be absolutely no issue switching it. He also said they weren't receiving many complaints about this issue.
I purchased mine at Best Buy and they swapped it out (after 3 days) without any questions at all. He just said no problem and switched it out.
I would pitch a fit if they won't work with you. It wouldn't even hurt them as it would be sent back to LG as defective anyways.

I'm in Sweden and got mine at a normal electronics store, the international version and not operator branded or anything. I got mine Dec 16 and went back to the store Dec 21. The guy at the store first wanted to do a warranty claim but I called bull**** and stated DOA since it was not even a week old. I was in that store for an hour trying to just explain what the hell was wrong with it. They claim they couldn't just switch it for a new one since they couldn't reproduce the problem. I don't know how the hell they expect to reproduce the problem with a soundsystem pumping in store (no chance in hell of having as good hearing as at night or when it's just quiet!) and listening for it in a soundproof room seems kind of moot too. My apartment is not soundproof nor is it isolated from radio interference or even in a particularly hot spot for cell reception.
I'm guessing LG Sweden haven't heard so much about this since they probably haven't sold as many of them over here. I'm emailing LG to hear what they have to say for themselves. I am in no way backing down on this. if I get it back and the service papers state nothing done and nothing wrong (in which case the store will make me pay the shipping fees) I will void the purchase. Will see if they try to fight me on that too. I'm bringing big brother to the store next time, he gets... loud.
Update:
I was just in the store to get my phone after getting an email that said it had gotten back from the servicecenter having been repaired but the DOA claim was denied. The repairshop had added little to no info on what exactly they had repaired or why the DOA had been denied, I asked the woman in the store for clarification and I stated that the fact that the phone had been repaired it clearly showed that it was DOA. She went back to check and came back and questioned why her co-worker had even sent it in for repair in the first place as it was de facto DOA and their routine is not to send DOAs for repair.
I never did found out exactly was what wrong with it, I got a brand new phone and an apology right there on the spot. I'm about to charge my new phone now so I can't say if the new phone has the same sound issues or heat problems yet. I'll come back and edit this post with the results, just for future reference.

Have tried it out for a little while now, not enough for it to get hot, but I can confirm that the persistent noise from the top of the phone is present in the new one too. Even tried disconnecting electronics that might interfere (cordless phones, wifi dongles, computer, speakers) but no change.
As for call quality, the voice quality is definitely better, no tin-can or garbled speech, but if both sides happen to speak at the same time it gets a bit choppy and cut off.
I'm going to post a question on LG Sweden's FB page and see if they have the balls to answer or simply ignore it and call it a feature most people can't hear. I'm curious as to what exact part in the phone is making the noise.

Ppl just do not hear it or do not wanna hear it
Don't expect a fix. N4 never saw an acknowledgement....

Check your speakers!

Just to make you all aware.
On my first 6p bottom speaker was noticeably more quiet. I thought its they way it has to be. Only when I got replacement I realised it must have been faulty. Now both speakers sound evenly and it is louder then previous one.
Something to look for when you get yours

I have ordered mine on the 1/10 from CPW. Got it this Monday. It had a small kind of dent in bottom back cover so got a replacement yesterday and now it has a pink tint on top.
Speakers are awesome though.

Have the same issue on mine. The bottom speaker sounds noticeably muted compared to the top. It's really the only issue with this one so I'm worried about RMAing and getting something worse.

The speakers too? OMG is there anything not being defective with this new phone? I keep reading people having issues with the display, speakers, body damage, there was even a report of a device shutting down on it's own and unable to boot completely...Is it the same with every Nexus launch? I can't remember reading about that many issues with the Nexus 6

This is my 4th Nexus device. My Nexus 7 (2012) was perfect as far as I could tell but others experienced issues with theirs. My Nexus 7s (2013) all had phantom touch and random rebooting issues. I went through 5 RMAs before I cut my losses and sold the new one they sent me. My Nexus 5 was mostly fine a little bit of button rattling but other than that no issues and still going strong. Now onto my 6P with speaker issues. It's frustrating to go through this but I really love these devices and Google has great customer service. I just expect when I pay $500 for something that it will function properly.

Same issue here. Noticed something was off right away. First time I've had to RMA a Nexus device.
Thanks for the heads up!
I tested my speakers and MAN I AM HAPPY!
I'm coming from the OG G2 and its the best phone on the planet (besides its 1 backside speaker)
So its like I went from last to first. I love how loud the 6p is.
One of first things I did when I got mines. The top speaker on mines sounded louder. So then I tried flipping the phone around and the now top speaker (which is the bottom speaker) sounded louder. So now I think mine are fine lol.
EDIT: I then tried covering each speaker with my finger and the top sounds louder. Honestly it does not sound any way to me though so dont think I will be RMA mine.
What I did notice, at full volume both seem to be the same....however at 50% or less the top seems a little louder.
the sad thing is I just got a bluetooth speaker in and its great and loud. My old phone had such a small speaker(lg g2). The 6p is as loud as my new bluetooth speaker so its not needed as much.

Funny thing is I did the same thing. Flipped the phone around and the top was a little louder. I wonder if it could just be a software issue? Either way everything else (especially the screen) is good on my device. I can't be bothered to RMA for something that probably will be fixed with software. If it is hardware on my device it's nearly unnoticeable.
I called google today about this and they said it was intentional and that replacing the device will not change it.
Apparently a lot of people are calling about it.
man... mine is like this, i was hoping i just had bad hearing. do i want to rma it and risk getting a device with something else wrong....

Don't do it, i returned my first for a tiny defect in the corner of the plastic holding the screen in and got one with a worse defect right next to rhe power button.. Waiting for my third, should have stuck with the first!
Its barely noticeable but my top one is every so slightly crisper and louder. But its one those things where id never have noticed had I not seen this post so I see no reason to RMA.
Here is a test viddy for the speakers
