Speaker issues - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Anyone else encounter any speaker issues with their Nexus 7?
My Nexus 7 has cracking that occurs after the volume is turned up halfway.

Sure do. And the screen issue and the tablet turning off while charging overnight issue. I have emailed google to see if I can get a replacement, but no response yet. The speaker issue seems to be alleviated by using the Equalizer App from the play store. I use the Jazz Preset and it seems to work. But still, unacceptable.

Yes, I have the same issue with crackling noise at higher volume levels. Not sure if this is really a defect or just a cheap speaker problem.

I do not have any issues with my sound, speaker or headphones, at any volume level. Sounds great compared to my some what quiet Galaxy Nexus

I have a very scratchy sounding speaker, at any volume. I have already contacted Staples and will get the new one on Wednesday. Pity too, everything else is perfect...

That's what I'm thinking. Speaker is very scratchy on mine above half volume, but I've got no dead pixels or screen lifting. Worried I'll get one that's worse!

Mine had a lot of distortion, though only on certain sounds/music above about 70% volume. After using the Equaliser app and tweaking the settings a bit it sounds much better.
Again, if this is a defect or just a really cheep speaker (I think the latter), no one really knows.

The one I just got at any volume there is popping, cracking, distortion, you name it. Speaker is definitely blown. And this was right out of the box.
Currently on hold with Google going to get an RMA.

Yep, that's how mine is too. Can't stand even having the speaker on at all. It even scratches with the typing sounds.
I agree with others, I am nervous that the new one I get tomorrow will have all the issues I am reading about. Because the one I have now is perfect, except the crappy speaker. No other issues at all. I almost decided to keep it and try to fix it myself, but if the issue is something more than a simple fix I would make things worse.
I'll let everyone know tomorrow after 6pm (thats when UPS comes to my place) if I got a good one or not...

I got my new N7 today, and so far everything seems perfect. The speaker sounds good (well as good as the speaker can sound). There is no screen lift , and I see no dead pixels or anything bad with the screen.
I returned my old one to the Staples location about 3 miles away, and this was their first return (and I bought it online). They said they got 1000 16gig ones and 1500 8gig ones, and they had one 8gig left.
Now time to unlock, root, and TiBu backup...

My speaker is blown as well and I'm very annoyed! On the phone with Goog now....hopefully the RMA process goes smoothly and I don't receive a unit with a diff set of problems. I purchased mine at Sams Club, but with them not having it in stock anymore, no sense in going back to them.
Edit:
Crap....I have to exchange it through Sams Club! UGH!!!!!

I'm going to call them when they open and PRAY that they have at least one in stock so that I can swap it out. I would hate to have to return it and then wait for it to go back in stock! Worst part is that I just put on the full body protector from XtremeGuard!

They shipped my replacement yesterday, about 12h after accepting my RMA link. I really hope the replacement is better than the one I have.

Called Sams Club and they have 5 on order, so they told me to call every day so that when they arrive, I can go in and swap it out. That's what I'll do, since I don't want to be without it in the meantime LOL

I had the same issue with My Nexus 7 which I bought in staples. Screen lift and blown speaker. I went in there and they gave me a new one on the spot.

I was really impressed with Staples easy return/exchange policy. As good as Target/Walmart/Amazon. Its nice not to have to wait for hours on the phone for support.. I hope Google uses this as a learning experience and ups their support times. BTW, I bought 3 N7's (one for me, my gf, and my mother and only mine had any issues, before the exchange that it...).

[Q] should i still return my n7?

ok first of all my n7 had a speaker problem, the left speaker sounded terrible with sounds coming out of it. so i took of the back and tried a method that was on here which was to slightly press around the defected speaker until it pop in or something like that. any way i tried what is said and it pop in back and now no sound what so ever is coming out of the left speaker. but im quite satisfied with the one speaker. it isn't as load as both together but its close to it. so should i still get a replacement? thats was the only problem i had with me n7.
thanks for your time

Speakers cracking

I've had my nexus for about a month now.
The speakers were fine until today, the just started a cracking sound on certain sounds.
It's really annoying and it only happens when the volume is higher then 50%.
With headphones the sound is just normal.
Is there something I can do about it? I'm not really a fan of sending my nexus back to Asus.
I had my left speaker crackling from day one. I opened the back cover and took off the net that covered the speaker. That solved my problem. You may also try that.
Sent from my Nexus One using xda app-developers app
Took the backcover of and discovered it was my right speaker, removing the net had no effect.
Are the speakers sold apart? And are they hard to replace?
Go back to stock using Wug's toolkit. My sound was broken and not playing, I thought it was a hardware problem but I flashed back to stock. I did that and It worked. It wouldn't hurt to try it. Make sure you backup your apps using "My Backup" or "Titanium backup (root)"

I had the same problem and researched it. I even unrooted and went back to stock thinking it may have been a software problem. But to no avail. It turns out to have been a blown speaker. I couldn't locate a replacement for it. Luckily I purchased it a Staples and was able to exchange it.

Same here right speaker. I figured out that mine has a tendency to "pop" out or something and if I just push it back in I hear a click and no more crackling.
I finally worked out a solution using tape under the mesh to keep the speaker from popping out like this again and no more crackling so far.

Very poor, cause it has a perfect screen without any flaws.

My Nexus was crackling and the headphone volume was really low and distant while running AOKP on it. Back to stock now and unrooted and sound is great.
Maybe a problem with the binaries? I'm gonna reroot tonight and do some testing with sound.

Well if it really is perfect otherwise it might be worth it to just tape something over the broken speaker to muffle it or disconnect that speaker it until someone starts selling the speaker assembly.
Temporarily having mono sound won't be the worst thing in the world. Do you really need stereo audio? Especially when the two speakers are right next to each other on the same side lol?
That's personally what I would do in your shoes. Someone will eventually start selling N7 parts on ebay or wherever. Heh I may have to if my speaker blows out again and I can't just "pop" it back in like last time.

my speakers blew out the other day. not sure if its one or both but its unbearable to listen to. i saw the guide on ifixit. seemed easy enough so next i did a quick search and found a place they sell them. its called powerbookmedic they go outta stock real quick when they get them in so sign up for there auto email restock notification thing and as soon as they send u a email run to a comp with ur debit card. i got mine coming in a day. i plan on putting these new ones in and then getting some external speakers to use just to save from having to do this again.

[Q] Did your RMA have problems?

Ive gone thought 2 RMAs and ive phoned Google for the 3 one.
- 1 device: All the device made noise, cracking all the time.
- 2 device: Horrible screen bleeding and noise on the speaker
-3 device: A black line from top to bottom of the device. Can be seen on white screens.
Im actually thinking on asking a refund and getting other phone. I love N4 but all come with some sort of problem.

I'll disagree only because people have suggested the same thing to me. I'm waiting for my 3rd device to ship. My first one has a bright spot you see in the middle whenever the phone is held from an angle, like a cluster of stuck pixels. The second had a bad yellow tint and black dust under the screen.
In the past 2 years I've bought 2 Lenovo laptops, an Asus Zenbook, a PSVita, an iPod Touch, a Samsung TV, Nexus One/S/Galaxy, Galaxy S2, Galaxy S3, a Xoom and a Galaxy Tab 10.1.
At NO point have I had to return or exchange a single one of these devices.
I otherwise love the device, but I have no doubt that corners were cut in the manufacturing process to attain the low price.
You are lucky your rma is shipping. This is my first rma with the n4 and they're not even shipping it to me. It's been almost 2 weeks too.
I ordered 4 originally (not for selling, for friends). Mine was the only one with problem (overheating, screen flicker, bad MicroUSB port). The RMA'd device was awesome in every way, but had no functioning Magnometer (so no orientation sensing or compass functionality). Still waiting for the second RMA to get here. Other than that, amazing phone.
My first device had the yellow spot syndrome so I RMA'ed it. Was disappointed to find the replacement had a yellow tint on the display. Was planning on RMAing that too until I found out it could be fixed with software. So I'm now happy with my 2nd n4.

Flashing the Jellytime kernel did it for me. There's also the Nexus 4 Display control that allows you to adjust it without changing kernels (I myself haven't used this but it looks promising).
I'm not sure if either would work if you have a stripe down the side, but it's worth a shot.

Thanks for the suggestions! Did you flash the jellytime kernel itself in the ROM thread, or did you flash the whole ROM along with the kernel? I don't know if there is a difference between the two besides the lack of OC. The kernel didn't fix the issues with me :c I might try the display control.

RMA's are now back ordered as well. Mine just changed to pre-ordered, and the CSR says they are now completely out of devices. I'm gonna say, crap like this contributes, as well as people that fry their phone OCing. OP absolutely has the right to a high quality device. But given the obvious supply issues Google has been having, I don't think it would have hurt to just deal with it for a couple weeks, none of those are deadline issues, and you have a full year to RMA for a manufacturer defect. I have a 3/4 inch tall strip across the center of my screen with no touch response, damn near cripples the device's usability.
Oh well, I guess that just means I get a phone from the third batch, that much less likely to have defects I hope. Or maybe I'll get the OP's refurb'd 1st device, cause I'm not that damned picky.
Again, OP does have the right to a high quality device, but now this kinda crap is screwing over user's with deadline issues.
my RMA was very fast (australia) shipped within 24hours of calling to setup the RMA
My phones earpiece cut out randomly so often i couldn't hear people when they called. the new one is perfect tho.
My old phone rattled and buzzed real loud and the replacement fixed that but it has a yellow tinted screen with clear spots.

Question About RMA'ing To Asus After Blown Speakers.

Okay, yesterday, tablet froze, and I hard rebooted, what's weird is it wouldn't boot up for like 2 minutes, I thought it had literally died, well after two minutes of trying it finally rebooted, but all the sudden my speakers were low, and crackly no matter how low/high the volume was, I think somehow the tablet freezing literally blew my speakers -.-, so I called in and set up an RMA and shipped it out today, my question is, with ASUS, and the blown speakers, do they just fix it and return it, or send you a completely new unit, or a refurbished one? I'm sad I have to go 2-3 weeks without my lovely tablet </3.
For me they have repaired the original unit within 6 days, Asus Czech repair center. I am pleased with them.

when my N7 was damaged and i sent it to ASUS for repairs, they just fixed what was needed and sent back the same one. and that was for a cracked screen, so a small issue like damaged speakers im pretty sure they'll just fix it and send back your original.

This wasn't at just max volume, this was any volume I had it on, from 1% all the way to 100% it was always crackly after the thing froze and I had to hard reboot it.
Has anyone sent in the N7 with bootloader unlocked? Or should we always always relock to be safe?

OMG... Same thing happened to my first Nexus 7,
I was watching Simpsons on my Nexus 7, then it froze for 2 minutes, with a high pitch coming out from speaker....
I assume the high pitch was the reason the speaker blew...
But the best part, i bought it from a really good store were they have this policy of if your device broke, send it back within Warranty and get replacement...
So i quickly Relocked OEM and Unrooted,
But i think my Titanium Backup folder and Clockwork Folders are still inside
Good luck to Asus

Check your speakers!

Just to make you all aware.
On my first 6p bottom speaker was noticeably more quiet. I thought its they way it has to be. Only when I got replacement I realised it must have been faulty. Now both speakers sound evenly and it is louder then previous one.
Something to look for when you get yours

The speakers too? OMG is there anything not being defective with this new phone? I keep reading people having issues with the display, speakers, body damage, there was even a report of a device shutting down on it's own and unable to boot completely...Is it the same with every Nexus launch? I can't remember reading about that many issues with the Nexus 6

This is my 4th Nexus device. My Nexus 7 (2012) was perfect as far as I could tell but others experienced issues with theirs. My Nexus 7s (2013) all had phantom touch and random rebooting issues. I went through 5 RMAs before I cut my losses and sold the new one they sent me. My Nexus 5 was mostly fine a little bit of button rattling but other than that no issues and still going strong. Now onto my 6P with speaker issues. It's frustrating to go through this but I really love these devices and Google has great customer service. I just expect when I pay $500 for something that it will function properly.

Same issue here. Noticed something was off right away. First time I've had to RMA a Nexus device.
Thanks for the heads up!
I tested my speakers and MAN I AM HAPPY!
I'm coming from the OG G2 and its the best phone on the planet (besides its 1 backside speaker)
So its like I went from last to first. I love how loud the 6p is.
One of first things I did when I got mines. The top speaker on mines sounded louder. So then I tried flipping the phone around and the now top speaker (which is the bottom speaker) sounded louder. So now I think mine are fine lol.
EDIT: I then tried covering each speaker with my finger and the top sounds louder. Honestly it does not sound any way to me though so dont think I will be RMA mine.
What I did notice, at full volume both seem to be the same....however at 50% or less the top seems a little louder.
the sad thing is I just got a bluetooth speaker in and its great and loud. My old phone had such a small speaker(lg g2). The 6p is as loud as my new bluetooth speaker so its not needed as much.

Funny thing is I did the same thing. Flipped the phone around and the top was a little louder. I wonder if it could just be a software issue? Either way everything else (especially the screen) is good on my device. I can't be bothered to RMA for something that probably will be fixed with software. If it is hardware on my device it's nearly unnoticeable.
I called google today about this and they said it was intentional and that replacing the device will not change it.
Apparently a lot of people are calling about it.
man... mine is like this, i was hoping i just had bad hearing. do i want to rma it and risk getting a device with something else wrong....

Don't do it, i returned my first for a tiny defect in the corner of the plastic holding the screen in and got one with a worse defect right next to rhe power button.. Waiting for my third, should have stuck with the first!
Its barely noticeable but my top one is every so slightly crisper and louder. But its one those things where id never have noticed had I not seen this post so I see no reason to RMA.
Here is a test viddy for the speakers

Just to make you all aware.
On my first 6p bottom speaker was noticeably more quiet. I thought its they way it has to be. Only when I got replacement I realised it must have been faulty. Now both speakers sound evenly and it is louder then previous one.
Something to look for when you get yours

just got off the phone with Huawei they said that both speaker should be at the same volume, google is claiming that the top should be louder...I dont think they want to exchange it.
