forgive my ignorance, but i'm not a gamer, i've heard about the playstation (sony makes it, i think), it's a gaming console, but what does playstation certified mean? does it have something to do with the playstation?

Hi nook, you're half right it being a console but its become more of a brand name and simply put it means we can officially play games.from the original console without the console of course and for some of us its great news because up until now most people would either rely on third party apps to do that and also having to deal with the issues of finding *legit* copies of the games to run on the apps. I don't know if you're aware of the Sony Ericson xperia play but on that and their tablet they would have a dedicated service or emulation of the original PlayStation games and with exclusive Sony content. But it was Sony device exclusive up until now, HTC had theirs certified first and logically Asus was next with the tegra three and all. All it means that you're going to get more out of your device now and that we're not forgotten especially at the speed Asus is rolling out devices these days.

nice
That is amazing news. Now if only you can have ps3 with android apps. And Google play.

There is a special playstation store app for xperia play owner and sony tablet s owners. It has some PS1 games and some other exclusives. The original concept of Playstation Mobile was also to get as sony called it "garage developers" (really hackers and coders) to make applications that would be cross platform for the playstation mobile devices and PS3.
It was a while back but it was also confirmed that PSP games will come to playstation suite. I mean playstation mobile. I could not believe it when I heard it but I did some digging and found the announcment. No idea when but playing PRINNY on my TF300T is full of epic win. Now if they would EVER release KH: BBS on Playstation Store, then PSP really would be obsolete.
Basically it means that in the future we will get certain apps and emulation games that can are cross platform with sony game devices and the certain playstation certified devices. This makes the Tablet S less appealing though but it's a damn smart move. It also shows again how ASUS is the top manufacturer for Android Tablets. Affordable price, bare stock OS with little bloatware, unlocked bootloaders, first tablets (for the most part) to get OS updates and now playstation certified devices.
I use my Onlive app alot to play games so I really wanna see what sony has cooking. I PRAY that sony also brings GAKAI to ASUS Tablets. That would be awesome.

eventually, as far as i am aware the playstation mobile market is not available atm. there are for sure going to be games like crash bandicoot and abes odyssey. im guessing like a bunch of psone classics and some new indie games mainly made for the vita/xperia play stuff.

Sony Announces PlayStation Suite For Android Games

I was reading this at SE-NSE.net
Apparently, it will be the next big thing in android gaming, luckily SONY is handling this, so pretty sure it will be good..
The only thing is that you have to have Android 2.3 or later, which means "Hello ARC, Bye-Bye Rachel"
Another day another piece of the PlayStation Phone puzzle falls into place. Today we have the announcement of PlayStation Suite, Sony’s new content platform that will service all manner of handheld devices.
Basically it will be an official PlayStation store run by Sony that will offer games for devices like the PlayStation Phone, but also tablets and dedicated handheld gaming devices e.g. PlayStation Portable. Sony made mention of PlayStation Suite being ‘hardware neutral‘.
Sony will be running the whole shebang, no doubt hoping that it can attract some of the bigger names in game design to bring their titles to their new platform. It’s certainly the biggest move Android gaming will ever have seen anyway.
In terms of the finer details like game titles, pricing, etc none of that is obviously known at this stage. However, one interesting tidbit is that PlayStation Suite is going to need Android 2.3 to run so it looks like the Xperia arc is in and older Sony Ericsson handsets are out.

Or keep our faithful x10s and flash with gingerbread. There is already a gbread rom around to give us 2.3 for x10i or x10a (don't know about minis or pros because I don't own one or check their respective areas on here)but I recommend only those who are competent and know what they are doing should flash.

i think the arc version of gingerbread may be very easily ported

Like root... first we got it on x10 and then pro and mini
Or ROMs... first we got it on x10 and then pro nor mini... (correct me if i'm wrong)
Sent from my es209ra using XDA App
It could well be that Sony put some kind of protection on the system to make it so only Sony phones with official roms can use the new games coming out. It's a case of deciding to flash from free x10 to another rom with all the stuff you don't need ie mediascape and timescape etc. I know on free 10 we cantuse the signature protected apps and I can't see why they would let their defences down so easily.
Personally to get the best of both I use free x10 and psx4droid v2 and there are many many games around.
Sent from my x10i GreenGlow 2.2
I do not doubt that 2.3 can be ported to the X10 by the developers here. My question is however, whether the X10's hardware can handle such graphics...
I think it really depends on which playstation games they plan to bring across and from which playstation ie; ps1, ps2 or ps3 or if they just intend on using existing psp titles.
The only one I think x10 couldn't cope with is ps3 imo

Exactly what I was thinking about..
The only thing that we have to worry about is the capabilities with the hardware..
I already saw the HTC EVO section worrying about their hardware handling such graphics

Doubted it, because when they announced it first in Japan, the conference clearly stated "For Android Devices"
similar to the Liveview which can be used with any android device. I really doubt the limitation to Sony Ericsson devices as this will be unwise thing to do.

Yup, you are correct.
Locking to SE phones only is less beneficial, why? If this platform is open to other devices, people will be BOUND to use its software to get games for their device, in the end, who gets the money? Sony. You can sell all the device you want, but Sony will get their share of the money. The other brands cannot even advertise their products that it supports Playstation Suite, why? Doing so would just be promoting Sony, so they are pinching themselves for selling Android devices. However, SE is allowed to do so. So in any case, Sony can only gain if their game line-ups are strong. Smart move I believe Only Sony can pull such a move...There's actually more to it, but it's too far into the future, but let's just say its a BIG net from Sony to catch the Android market that no brand can escape...

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the Xperia Play or, to be more precise, the PlayStation Suite is meant to provide PSOne games, while Sony announced the NGP (PSP successor) for newer games, right?
Is the X10 really not able to run ported PSOne games? If I compare some games like N.O.V.A or NFS for Android with old PSOne games, the graphics are at least at the same level.

The Playstation Suite is meant to provide gaming experience for android devices ( PSOne games included ), but mainly the same games that are available for the PSP will be available ( most of them at least ), because it depends on which companies want to get involved or not.
But I expect that "Minis" that are available at playstation Network will be available first.... yet I could be wrong

The Playstation Suite is a much broader range than just PSOne games. PSOne games is only part of the Playstation Suite. Therefore, there will be games where high graphics is demanded. Actually, there's already a few games that run perfectly on new devices, and lag on the X10. Now imagine having 50+ of those games...
Once again the path Sony take is really not that clear...
Will a "playstation for any Android"-system like this, not undermine their own attempt to build a new playstation phone also based on Android ??
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
That's what I thought with psp phone meant to be coming out, it wouldn't make everyone buy it if you could run it on any Android. Take mediascape or timescape, the are programs designed for Android but will only run on approved Sony software and sence for HTC. It's meant to be something attracting customers to that particular brand as a major factor in the decision to buy that particular handset.
Playstation is Sonys baby after all and I can't just see them saying well there you go to the masses cos it just reduces the incentive to buy the psp phone if you can do them on any handset above a certain spec.
My 2 cents as it were.

There will be games where the play will take full advantage of its gaming keys in contrast with the touch screen only devices. They wouldn't put on it for no reasons Plus, there's a lot more marketing underlying all these stuff, but hey, anything that makes SE get more money, I'm happy with
Hope X10 can handle this stuff
PSP phone will appeal to gamers who want a phone...
Playstation Android Suite will appeal to smart phone users who want to game...
It's win-win..
Feels like the start of a strategy that will really own the market.

it's a promising strategy that should seriously boost the android gaming scene, i was expecting the Gingerbread requirement since gaming is one of the flags of 2.3
which makes me wonder if the x10 will perform better with games once the 2.3 ROM is ready, or it won't make much of a difference.
I think a decent dedicated GPU will be important.. but I guess we'll see!

PS VITA has arrived, will i ever use my Xperia Play again?

My PS VITA arrived today and i cannot wait to get home to try it.
This got me thinking Will i ever use my Xplay again? Will i miss it if i got rid?
When i first got my Xplay (April 2011) i was over the moon, the potential this phone had was endless. Coming from a Palm Pre it had alot to live up against, (I Love webOS) I find myself with every phone wanting to play games, perfect fit i thought.
However nearly 12 months later and the games i still play the most are all on emulators, N64, PSX, etc all android games that are half decent end up being a let down (personal thoughts of course) GTA3, Dead Space Even (repetitive), all gameloft games!
Maybe i was sold on the hype and potential and not on the actual business plan Sony Erricson had for the Xplay, infact what is it for? causal gamers, emulator nuts? It annoys me that not all android games utilise the gamepad (this is one thing i expected to happen - Its only a litlte bit of code to add isn't it?)
The only real thing that has made me pick my xplay up in the last few months is the amount of support the devs have given it. Kernels, Custom Roms etc (I can do this on nearly any android phone)
I feel i can get rid of my Xplay now, i love android for its customisation options, maybe if there ever was a Xplay 2 they can get it right, make it a proper console like the vita which can make calls and i'll be happy.
My rant, debate, statement whatever i wrote is over.
However my question still remains Will i ever use my Xplay again? Will i miss it if i got rid? Wierdly...........
I think the answer would be yes i would miss it!

I suggest you keep your Xperia Play cause end of the day it's a phone and you can make calls with it AND just keep it because you have got emulators on it.
Vita has arrived... and yet we STILL don't have the damn playstation store....
When Gameboy Advance came, did you miss your Gameboy color?
I've ordered a HTC chacha, because I miss the keyboard, and I feel that's petter then a gamepad, even if the chacha is not as powerful as the play.
I'm happy with my Vita and my chacha
My xperia play is in the box, ready to sell.
Well you say what you pay the most on it is emulators, so yeah you'll still use it, you're not getting emulators until the Vita gets hacked, and even then the Xperia Play has more good games. At the minute the Vita isn't a portable games console, it's a portable Uncharted console.

playstation store will most likely be with ICS so everything is pushed to the play at once
also 3 hours vita vs upto 8 hours xplay best idea would be to keep both and try use the vita for vita games and everything else phone
Well I can understand your view. Even I've stopped gaming on my XPlay since gameloft slowed down on releasing new games for android.
And myself I'm planning to get the new Xperia S after few month's of its release or wait till the dev section in XDA gets little populated with custom kernels/roms etc. And I'm not sure about carrying another device(Vita) in my pocket except my phone.
But by next year hopefully we see an XPlay 2 with better specs and much better support but I highly doubt Sony will do that since it will create competition against its own product which is the new Vita.
But on the other hand I have fingers crossed for HTC to release a phone with gamepad. Why so? Because latest rumor has that some new HTC devices will get PS certified from Sony. Which means there are chances of another phone with gamepad or maybe it will simply be like a "PS certified" device like Xperia S. Which makes no sense at all.

I've cut back on my PLAY time as well, mainly because I've beaten every game I have (that I wanted to beat, excluding Splinter Cell which just sucks), and the only ones I don't have that I'd like to play are Shadowgun, MC3, and BackStab. I'm waiting for a sale to buy them as I refuse to pay full price of a GL game when they hand them out for a buck every few months.
Waiting for or hoping for some more games with depth, otherwise I may get a Vita as well.
As for HTC I don't see them making a niche phone like this, and in fact I think its entirely possible we will never see an Xperia PLAY 2, as they 1 wont want to compete with the Vita, and 2 mucked it up the first time around.
EDIT: If I have to wait for ICS on the PLAY to get the Playstation Suite I may as well get a Vita and ditch this phone at my next upgrade, because Verizon hasn't even given us 2.3.4 yet, gonna be a cold day before we get ICS.
Get a vita, play it in public, never get laid again.
Pretty funny though you guys got to go out and replace this with 2 seperate high end products.

Verizon does suck, doubtful we will ever get ICS. Also didnt I read somewhere in the begining of Dec that they were traning their employees for the Xperia PLAY LTE? Guess that never panned out. I really like my PLAY but it seems like all the games worth playing are old, and pretty much all dave 2 of the GameLoft games are buggy pieces of crap. The PS Vita has a really nice display but I will never buy a handheld game console anymore, and no its not because I want to get laid I am already married and can get that whenever she wants......because if its me I end up on a milk carton.
The second that I found out that the VITA was not a mobile device I lost interest...
I'm not gonna carry around multiple devices.
And it's true, seeing a PSP/3DS/VITA being played in public makes the person look... juvenile... Of course playing a game on a cell phone doesn't have the same effect. Double standard, I guess.

Thats my problem... I just can't see myself carrying it. The reason I love the Xperia PLAY is its in my pocket all the time.
When I was a kid I had a Sega Game Gear. I barely used it and ended up selling it for two reasons, 1. was that I had very little money, so if I was gonna spend money on games I was gonna spend it on Genesis games since 2. it was too bulky to carry aground (and the Vita is not much better) meaning aside from long Car rides I rarely carried it around, meaning I played it at home, and when I'm home I'd rather play a game on a TV.

I agree. PS Vita is NOT a phone. Okay it's got better graphics and all that but then the games aspect comes into play. You have to pay £30 for every game. I'd rather play a game on PS3 on a 40'' 3D TV than play it on the Vita's screen.
To be honest i'm happy with my Xperia Play even though some people may not like it. I'm happy with £3 games I spend on it and happy to play them.
As I said I'd rather play games on the PS3 with a big screen.
The Vita is just for people who want to show off
What the hell is with the talk that dedicated handheld gaming consoles look stupid? I play them in public, and I have no issues getting laid. I'd chalk that one to looks. I play a 3ds as well as my xplay. Its the same ****, who cares.

I've had the Vita since 30 dec [Japanese import] and I can tell you that the only device I carry around is my Xperia Play. Sony has gotten so paranoid over copyright infringement that the Vita is compeltely locked down even on purchases I have already made on the Playstation Network. My existing mini's and PS1 games do not transfer / the content manager is a pain to use, I have to reformat video to get it on the device. Yeah, Unchartered is pretty, but my Vita is collecting dust because it is too frustrating to use and too bulky to carry around. In fact, I rushed to get one because I think sony will discontinue the Vita after a failed US and European release.
Why would Sony put out an Android "playstation phone" and then Vita shortly after - they are hedging their bets, If the Vita fails miserably [which it should in this new gaming environment] then I bet we get an XPeria PLay 2 shortly after.
on the other topic, i'm married which means I rarely get laid
All interesting points!
I got a vita so when my girlfriend is watching soaps and stuff i get to play proper games on the sofa, portbale consoles will never replace the home console, the experience is totally different, e.g i play fifa on my vita same game more or less as my xbox 360 but on a portable system seems different still brilliant and way better than the xplsy version, i will still play the home console version over vita anytime big screen and surround sound!
vita is great for my purpose, sofa, work, long trips, cant take my 360 or ps3!
my play just didnt give me yhe same satisfaction, apart from the emulators i mentioned in my op.
and fir ppl saying 40 quid is too much, i agree but these are way better quality games then the 3 quid ones on phones.
i think its time for game companys to start releasing double play, triple plays like blu ray movies.
by one game for 40quid, play it on ya home, portable console and ya phone

Xperia play 2 - patent submitted

So finally maybe some taste of what will be the next xperia play ?
http://www.reghardware.com/2012/04/27/sony_planned_xperia_play_with_dual_keyboard_design/
"both a gamepad and a physical keyboard pieced together through two sliding drawers tucked behind the phone's display."
will it be for real ? or just another lost patent ?
This should be in the general section.

fake? this is from USA patent : aiw2.uspto.gov
(i worked with safari browser to view this): http://aiw2.uspto.gov/.aiw?Docid=20...ageNum=&Rtype=&SectionNum=&idkey=D5289BDDE036
it is from 2010 (before xperia play 1)
it is just a concept
this was featured on the app drippler
and it was infact an old concept for the xperia play one
back in 2010 like a previous user stated
Don't you people realise, sony patented this ONLY so their competitors couldn't make it?

If Sony were really going to launch an Xperia Play 2 or whatever I think they would not have the picture of its predecessor for the conference don't you?
Personally I think its for the PS Suite.
This is a two year old patent, I seriously doubt it would be the Play2, besides it seems like it would be going backwards anyway, why ditch the second analogue and make it so much like the PSP Go?
This is not going to be Play2.

I don't understand why people keep calling this fake. It's a patent. It was taken out by Sony. It was only just recently granted by the US Patent and Trademark Office which is why it's making the news now.
It's not a fake. It's a real patent.
Now, do I think that it will be the design for the new Xperia Play? No.
But that's not to say that the idea (physical keyboard AND game pad) won't be incorporated into the new design, if they even decide to make another play (let's face it... I love my play, but it was a bit of a flop).
I hope they don't incorporate it. I hate the idea of it. But, it's interesting to see none the less.
What's wrong with a bit of idle speculation on the next gen of our current phone? These forums are so negative these days.

This patent is pre-xperia play 1.
Seeing as the Play was a commercial flop I really doubt a Play 2.
If there is then it wont be under the Play name

For starters, MS filed Halo related patients before Halo 3, that they have still not used. It's called covering your back. And secondly now sony have bought out ericsson, there will no doubt be an Xplay 2. And IMO without ericssons input, i'm expecting a much better product. It may even be sonys future flagship device.

Just because Sony bought out Ericsson doesn't guarantee a Play 2 at all.
Even if it is just Sony covering their backs it doesn't mean its going to see the light of day just because there is a patent.

the Ngage was a bigger flop and still saw another version, same with the moto cliq
sony missed a great opportunity to make the play really worth while, simply adding PSP1 games would have been a great start, but this also leaves room for improvement for the play 2, which i have no doubt will arrive sooner or later
the hype before we knew what the play was, was immense, sony would do well to listen to what customers wanted and give it to us
Yeah, and I can't wait until Microsoft releases this too:

But yeah, patents don't always mean we're getting a product any time soon - they're often just an indication of research and development projects or just some cooky idea an employee had. Some might become products; some might be used defensively; some might just make the company's patent portfolio sound more impressive/valuable.

N-Gage didn't get a sequel. It got a redesign. Same Symbian S60 OS. Same everything (bar some features).
Also don't count the Nokia N95 or N96 in there either as that was just the N-Gage gaming brand.
On the hype side, that's all it was...hype. They pulled a Sega by advertising their product without showing the device or anything like that. Sega did that with the Dreamcast. Showed the swirl logo in the clouds on one ad but didn't show the Sega or Dreamcast name anywhere.
Again, like the N-Gage, another flop (I liked the Dreamcast personally)
I don't think Sony is blind. They know the Play was a flop. What company is going to lay their chips on the table and launch a sequel to a failed piece of hardware?

Turn iPhone 5 into an Xperia Play - EX Hybrid Controller

The EX Hybrid Controller for iPhone 5 is a case for the device, along with two separate attachments for two separate uses. The case for the iPhone 5 itself is magnetic on the back. The two attachments that are included in the package simple snap right into place using magnets as well. One attachments is a magnetic wireless keyboard for the iPhone 5, while the other is a game controller (interesting). The whole setup uses Bluetooth 3.0 for up to 40 hours of use with the game controller as well as the keyboard.

I don't think iPhone with a controller can magically have the same freedom as android, but it does look good, to bad the Nexus 4 has glass back.

Hardly an Xperia Play killer Not even close
damn
other brands are looking for a way to make a gaming phone , but sony ****
If there is no way of mapping buttons/controls etc then this is useless.
the only way to kill the Xperia Play, would make a keyboard like this (but with physical buttons and analogs) and that it can slide to hide .. (Xplay style) to design one day so ... (Xperia Z + That gamepad) WOOOOOW!
What's left to kill?

to kill, I was referring to (get the title as the first and only smartphone-console world) all other designs (consoles / android), but only the (console-android) no (smartphone-console).
are things that can not be carried in your pocket, or any time you without attracting attention because of its size or design (unlike the Xplay) ...
in my opinion, I think Xperia Play, was left behind by a matter of "Marketing" not only have little hardware, if not for the bad optimizations some games developers do (that optimize only for the top-end smartphone) (Example gameloft, which some games I can edit a file, to increase you the graphics, and yet still work excellent) ...
if we look closely, we have games with excellent graphics and which are also Xperia Play Optimized, and work perfectly (example: NFS Most Wanted, Dead Trigger, Shadow Gun, Wild Blood, The Bard Tale, Nova 3)
and on the other hand, others very badly optimized games like: Gangstar Vegas, Real Racing 3, Dungeon Hunter 4, Grand Thef Auto Vice City. (all of these work very slow even with overclock)
Luckily we have the help of developers who even do not forget this great Smartphone (eg PPSSPP - By Henrik Rydgard, Drastic DS - By Exophase) ..
Three real big issues with that:
- That thing has less control options than a snes controller. Xperia Play has the full control setup complete with dual analogs. The iControlPad had better equipment.
- The fact that it's iOS makes it automatically inferior in it's capability with peripheral hardware
- What little it does have is too akin to the classic Motorola Razr (which was famous for it's abysmal buttons)

They had to change the design to make it compliant with the standard gamepad framework Apple will be releasing on iOS 7 (they are still adapting it to the standard). They will be open for orders later this year I believe.
They also said that if this is successful, they may do it for android as well, at least for the most popular handsets (I think the galaxy S4 was mentioned as an example, not sure).
Little update: Just checked their twitter. Some info:
- They refunded all pre-orders for the bladepad and cancelled them due to the framework change.
- They said Apple is making them wait until iOS 7 is released to give them complete information on their requirements (which, I presume, is delaying the bladepad).
- When asked if they would make one for the Galaxy series, they answered "It's definitely a possibility. We would like to expand to Android as soon as we are able : )"
- They are going to focus on the official framework instead of Jailbreaking...
- ...at the same time, though, they said the bladepad, while not supporting Cidya emulators right now, may support them in the near future.

I have to agree with this.
Once i opened my Play (for flex replacement) i was amazed how that Play's dual touchpads is just one single touchpad like in laptops, with a simple connection to the motherboard. And i've seen so many opened laptops that even in Play's case i am surtain that ordinary PS/2 protocol is used (just as in laptops)
I'm glad to see more hardware that is based on touchpads instead of analog stick.
I really like using touchpads more often than analog sticks. The touchpad is like using a mouse, more accuracy and more speed (e.g. First/Third Person Shooters).

I'm afraid CTU_Loscombe was correct, or at least for the most part. The dual touch pads on the Xperia play, for the most part, looked (and played) like utter crap, but those few titles produced by those developers that 'got' them hinted at something surprisingly innovative.
They were generally unloved and unused by developers and gamers alike. However, a handful of developers understood what they actually had in front of them: a pair of laptop-style mouse touchpads. And once you code with this in mind, you can end up with a control mechanism that more resembles the hallowed, devastating Mouse-and-Keyboard combo beloved of PC gamers. Fire up Dead Space, ShadowGun or Minecraft - three games that utterly nail the dual touchpad controls - and it looks for all the world like you are using a mouse and keyboard.
I'm not saying Valve have copied and built on what Sony Ericsson have done here - I think it's more a case of convergent evolution, but either way I've already had a taste of what this new controller can potentially do, and - naysayers and pessimists aside - I think the status quo is in for a pleasant surprise.

Well I did say it depends on the game and how its implemented. You listed 3 great games that did it right, and I'd add MC4, nova 3, and pewpew to that list.
Just because the play isn't fully supported by the app world doesnt mean its crap hardware that doesnt work. It's just an esoteric device and developers dont always put in the hours to code it specifically for our phone.

good luck steve
i wish some day i'll be read your article about xperia play 2 - review ... :fingers-crossed:
The only problem with Play's pads is that they are small. When you move your big thumb around on a small area, its way too sensitive.
You need to use "thumb roll" when you finetune your aim.
I dont think that touchpads will replace analogs sticks in the near future. There needs to be some sort of feedback to your fingers (much like when you write on the touchscreen, you always get that nice vibration)
I think that they said somewhere that Steam controllers bads "give in" just a tiny bit so that the surfaces isnt just solid piece of plastic ? Not sure though if I understood it correctly.
Steam controller could work decently with those touchpads.
