Screen flicker disappear after turn off wifi? - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm having a very weird issue here.
I just noticed that when my brightness is set under 30%(automatic brightness off) the screen is flickering with wifi on.
With auto brightness on same thing happened.
Afterwards, I turn off wifi, the screen flickering is disappear. Weird!
Is it the wifi problem that makes screen flicker?
Any future updates will fix this problem?

Other threads have discovered it appears to be the wifi antenae causing the problem, you can pop the back cover off and put stickytape over the ground tab and that resolves the issue, at least it did for me

Using sticky tape over the antennae will weakening the signal?
Pop the back cover off will void warranty?

I would also like to know if it affects the signal? And I'm pretty sure that popping the cover off doesn't void the warranty, right?
I have notice a slight flicker once in a while, but I don't notice it all the time. I don't wanna return it either, because I'd be without my tablet. so if putting tape on the ground would fix it, that's good to know.

My signal is the same with tape applied. Also change the wifi channel on your router. This cleared all of my flickering issues. I went from channel 6 to 11. That with the tape ended all of my issues.

Well my flicker isn't bad, I usually don't notice it. Once in a while I will notice a flicker, but it usually doesn't happen again soon.
Anyway the wifi channel I use mostly is channel 4.
Is there a post or something online that shows where you need to put the tape? I don't want to open the back if I can't help it, but if it really will eliminate the [small amount of] flicker, I may just end up doing that.. with gaffer's tape of course.

Unfortunately this sounds like the heat related alignment problem. When the device gets warm e.g when using wifi or charging say when connected to Active Sync, the heat causes a small internal expansion. This puts pressure on the edges of the touch sensitive screen.
If you have a warranty, use it, because there is no guaranteed fix.
If you don't have a warranty then the Wiki here outlines the things to try. Essentially for you I think it would be to unscrew by one quarter turn, the two screws on the back of the screen. Secondly, the business card trick of running the corner of the card between the screen edge and the bezel of the casing. There is a thin rubber gasket in there and the card can be used to free up a bit of room. This may cause small rubber granules to come free. Don't leave a lumpy mess of granules in there though. Best clear it right out. This is a warranty voiding procedure!!
Replacing the LCD is not likely to improve matters as actually the screen is probably fine, It's the pressure being put on it!

Thanks so much Mr.Michael Channon,

Well, as I said above it sounds heat related and there is no fix other than the things you have tried - you need a replacement. Someone on this board ended up keeping the device in the fridge so they could get half an hour from it before it conked out again. It's a replacement job IMHO.

Two issues with my Touch HD

Hi, ive experienced two issues with my Touch HD, one of them is that the phone calls get disconnected at a random time. I can talk for 5 minutes and suddenly the phone shuts down the call... And the other issue is with the screen, wich is demonstrated on the attached picture. It comes and goes, so its not persistant but it looks really bad on the screen when its there. The attached picture is coming from a Diamond, and it looks exactly like the problem I have on my Touch HD.
Can anyone confirm this and perhaps come up with a solution?
Thanks
Hello
If you have the protection foil adhesed to your screen it could definitely be that...
Consider that your device heats up when charging or while you do lot of stuff with it - hardware heats up and the glue or whatever it is comes off so your foil does the same
My friend had the foil on but got really fed with it so he just took it off and no more stuff like that on your screen...
If you do not have this foil it is probably a HW issue with your screen thus you should get it replaced - whole device of course....
hope I helped...
about random dropping the calls there are several discusiions around. just use search option!
hint:
try to change settings-phone-band-network type from auto to just gsm
3g is known as often drop the quality and maybe your phone try to switch from 3g to gsm.
if this is not the situation, look around, maybe someone found the solution
about the rainbow stain, could it be just moisture caused by moving from cold temperature to warm temperature?
is it still there if your phone is out in cold air? did you noticed if the stain is always there or it occurs only when the phone became hot?
if this is the situation, you have to remove the shield from screen and install it (or a new one) again but on a dry screen.
if you don't have a screen protector, then your problem is more complicated as the moisture is between your screen layers and can be changed only at a htc service center
I also read somwhere (forgot where) that the rainbow stain can be caused by pressure
yours is a very neat rectangle
does it always appear in the same place ?
when the pressure releases later it can then vanish
this is the link, it also explains how to solve the stain issue

Zesper, thanks for the link.. this is the issue with my Touch HD. Its now shipped for repair and I hope the warranty will cover it. The funny thing here is that the problem comes and goes.
Regarding the dropping calls, ill try with the switch to gsm, once its back again from repair.
Thanks

Anyone else having a weird, intermittent issue with the touch screen seemingly not working right
IE: I try to scroll and instead it makes a tap where my finger lands. Unlocking the screen doesn't work 50% of the time because the lockscreen will just lag out and I have to sleep/re-wake the device
This happens on stock and after i rooted to tiamats rom

I haven't experienced or heard of this before, at least as you're explaining it.
Is this accompanied by screen dimming? Did this start after the update to HC3.2?

Your device may not be grounded. It's a common problem with touch screen devices. Does this happen when you're holding the device in your hands?

I really don't know, let me do some testing and see what circumstances it is replicated under.
How would grounding be determined? Its not charging...
I do have it in a silicon/rubber case. Would that be a problem?
Just for the sake of satisfying my curiosity - if you are experiencing this issue while your Xoom is docked - try placing your fingers on the back of your Xoom and typing with your thumbs.
I am trying to resolve a similar issue that I only encounter while my Xoom is docked at one place in the world - my work. Nowhere else does it do this.
I have installed a power conditioner, with no effect. It happens whenever the power is plugged into the dock. If I use an external power supply it goes away (batteries). I did switch off the florescent lighting and it is better, so it may be EM related. especially since it is a *capacitive* screen.
I have also read of people with other capacitive touch screen devices have the same issue when it is not held in their hands.
Let me know either way.
Thanks,
Frans

I have seen issue on gtab where some roms/kernel where having issue with screen calibration, there was a calibration files that could be created in the root with the name calibration.ini and upon reboot it was fixed, I do not know if this is valid for a xoom tho...
with a few rom I had NO issue whatsoever and never reused the calibration...

Well you bring an interesting point. The device was in my hands but I was not actually touching it... It had a rubber sleeve on it.
I since got the Motorola hard case which has some areas exposed and I also disabled the lock screen, and I have not been able to replicate the problem at all.
The device was docked at one point, charging, and the problem showed up aagin (recalling from memory). The fix was to power off the screen and re-wake the device. This did involve touching it, so...maybe its an electrical thing?

I had this problem with the stock 3.2 ROM. I haven't done any calibration, and don't think I need to: it works perfectly majority of the time.
I'll reenable the lockscreen and try to replicate it again.
Okay I think I'm onto the problem
I opened the case just now, still lock screen disabled, pressed just the power button and the touchscreen was acting up again.. couldn't slide to scroll, but could tap/point only
I then put my thumb on the side, as if naturally holding it without a case, and it started working normally again without any kind of power cycle.
Thoughts?
Have you dropped or jarred your Xoom a lot? Look for threads I started in this forum, I have one that explains this issue and includes a fix. My Xoom is still working flawlessly. I'd link it but pre-calculus is about to start.

I bought the XOOM second hand from someone who claimed they hardly used it. Right now sitting infront of me, the bottom right, on the back edge, there is a small pressured crease as if it was dropped (looks like the corner of my phone when i dropped it on tile).
I personally have not dropepd it, but I throw this thing onto my bed all the time, it fell out of the dock onto my hard desk once, so yeah its been knocked around.
Will doing that mod void the warranty?
I found no warranty stickers or screws when I disassembled it. The back cover is made to slide down so that Moto can do the 4G upgrade, so I doubt they want to be fooling with that type of thing anyways. I can't say for certain that sticking a piece of foam in the back of your Xoom won't void the warranty, but I can say that it fixes the issue(which also could be covered by warranty if you can get someone to believe you've got the issue, I however could not, so I had to take it upon myself).
Alright
I just ran into the problem again playing a game.. seemed like the right half of my screen just stopped working intermittently. Kept playing and it returned to normal.
I may pop it open and try the foam thing. I'm pretty good with disassembling laptops.. I can't see this being much harder.

[Q] Bottom half of screen not responding to touch

I had an exam and removed the battery for my phone for the duration. When I put it back in, the bottom half of my screen stopped responding to touch. The screen itself is unharmed and uncracked. The S Pen still works flawlessly. However, the bottom half of the screen ("above" about 890 pixels on the Y axis) simply does not respond to normal touch. In addition, the volume buttons no longer change my notification volume. They still work for music volume, just not touch volume. When I long-press the power button, the power menu sits at the very top of the screen and has black covering the whole bottom of the screen for some reason. When I receive calls, the buttons are right at the top. Because of this, this seems to be some sort of software issue, but I have no idea what would cause it. Has anyone with more experience with Samsung devices seen this before? Multiple restarts and battery pulls have done nothing.
EDIT: In case anyone else encounters this, it had something to do with my case. I think my phone thought it was a smart cover for some reason. I enabled and disabled smart cover and then removed and replaced the case. It's working fine now.
EDIT: Never mind, that was a coincidence. The issue is DEFINITELY that the phone thinks it has a smart cover on it, but it has nothing to do with my own case.

I've had much the same problem. While the S-Pen was able to make selections that the touchscreen wouldn't, other S-Pen functions such as Air Command and being able to start an Action Memo wouldn't work. Waiting for an extended period of time (like 24 hours) and all of a sudden it started working again. However, while I was waiting, rebooting - even performing a factory reset - didn't' fix it! I just now rebooted it and it's not working again, and it's not in a case.
Where do you find the option to enable and disable Smart Cover? On the Note 2, it was (apparently) under Security / Device Administrators, but I don't find it there. The only option I could find was in Accessories / S View Cover / Automatic Unlock but changing this setting (including rebooting between settings) hasn't solved it.

Sadly, it was just coincidence that it randomly stopped happening when I enabled and disabled the auto-unlock feature with Smart Cover. My phone started doing it again and I've been unable to repair it. I went to Verizon and they wiped my phone before telling me I'll just have to get it replaced with a refurbished one. Very frustrated. Shame there aren't any AOSP based ROMs yet (like CyanogenMod)-- they'd probably fix it since the cover thing wouldn't be a feature.
Bump.
Anyone know of the APK which would handle S View Cover behavior? If we were to disable that I imagine the problem would go away. I'm still not totally sure of the origin of the issue, but it seems to come from a combination of hardware and software problems. The hardware sensor thinks I have the case on, so the software changes things around. When I call people, I get the S View Cover style call screen. If I change the toggle in accessory settings to automatically unlock the phone when opening the cover, hitting the lock button automatically unlocks the phone as though I had no lockscreen. However, when this is disabled, the lock screen is NOT in the S View Cover form-- it looks stock. This confuses me.
Any ideas from anyone else getting the issue?
Same experience
Just to add my experience as I go. This afternoon I received an error that my SMS data could not be downloaded. Upon sliding down the notifications I was unable to control much. I ripped the majority of my hair out over this.... My pen works flawlessly everywhere though. I eventually discovered it works fine on the bottom half as you described. I have to run to some appointments, but I'll touch back after I try a few things.

Maybe it was caused by the battery insertion or backplate replacement. Perhaps too much pressure or an uneven pressure damaged the circuitry, which is now loose and causing the intermittent error.
Or perhaps it was a static discharge from the battery.
Both cases seem to me to be warrenty items.

I thought the only thing necessary to unroot is to flash the stock ROM. The download is linked from the de la Vega post.

I have the same issue. I ve been trying to understand why this happened but no luck. I tried everything from updating to reseting. I first noticed it when i took the battery out as well. but the problem kinda fixed it self so i thought the phone has a spaz or something. but when i removed the battery again it happened again.
I took it to the people i bought it from and all they can say is cause there were a couple of scratches on the side of the case that it may not fall under warranty...
i was pretty angry cause its only two months old and the warranty is for a year. and the problem started happening while i was overseas so its been like that for almost a month. hopefully the sales guy is just talk cause its not up to him its just his "opinion" as he put it.
Did they explain to you why this happened? or if this is a common issue?
Hope your new phone is ok
I have this problem intermittently also. Exactly as described above.

I have the solution!
Please. Let me know it worked for you, so people that doesn´t like to post and only read can solve this problem.
The Problem:
The half bottom screen is not working. Including the back button, the option button and the home buttom. they only work if you use the S Pen. Except for the home button. The volumes button do not work either. So the Solution is this..
take off the battery while the phone is on. YES, do not turn off the telephone and the take off the battery. Just take off the battery while the phone is on. It should work. I hope this is the solution.
One more thing. Do not allow your phone to dried up the battery completly so this wont happen again. It is better to turn it off before it dries up.!
Please let me know if it worked for you! I will let you know if this problems start again and if was only an coincidence.Hopes it not!
This tough me a good lesson! never buy a Phone from not trusted retailer, it is better to pay the full price a good store. The people that sold me the phone has a crappy warrraty like if the screen it cellphone is complete off they wont allow me to use the warranty and my phone had faulty battery conecction so it was off. then I paid 100 dollars to be repaired then this problem.
Ok, guys please let us know if it worked so people start saving their phone
Just happened to mine as well
Hard reset didn't work, on the phone with support trying to request a replacement now.
Finally Solved!
Hi
I had same problem
I did everything u said like:
mega wipe and changing rom
custom roms
taking out battery when it's on ( I Did this but I don't know It had any effects on my phone or not!)
taking out external card
But I still Had the Problem
Solution:
But I had a flip cover and I separated that from phone and thanks God,surprisingly It's Fixed and it works like a charm!!! after that I used my original cover and there is no problem till now.
Good Luck
Had the same problem of touch not working.
I tried everything as suggested by the members but my Note 3 is still not working right.Touch not responding all of a sudden in the bottom part of screen after i removed the battery for sim change. Please suggest something.

I haven't gone back to refresh my memory but it seems to me that all these occurrances were caused by removing the back cover. Try removing it and the battery and firmly press on every spot with your thumb. First place the device face down on table padded with a single layer of a blanket. Remove the SIM and SD card and firmly reinsert. Press the back cover on and try it, then return it for warranty if it is still bad.

I also was faced with this issue today at the start of my morning BUT I FOUND A SOLUTION
I have a Sprint Galaxy Note 3 N900P Stock ROM/ no root, no mods/custom kernels/boots etc...
My device side effects were
The bottom half of my screen was not responding to my fingers,
When you press the Power Button, The options appeared on the top section of the screen instead of being the center
When I press the volume up/down keys, The volume would raise and lower, But the screen that pops up and shows you the volume had increased or decreased didnt show up
Only way to use device was with S Pen
Basically all the issues everyone listed, I had them.
Now my solution; if the issue is a hardware issue.
After dissembling my phone to see what each hardware part of the phone controls, I've come to the conclusion that there was an issue with my USB Dock Connector section of the phone. I uploaded a image pointing which connector controls it. I tried to just wipe and clean it up a bit because mines had some residue on the underneath of it. Then I plugged it back in and it started back to work %100. After I tried restarting it a few times and shaking the device up, it still works; Although I am still going to order a replacement USB Charging Port with flex cable just in case.
fixed.
This is the definitely the hardware problem.
most likely happen if u ever dropped ur phone to the ground ----------- and reboot ur phone some what later time. (can be days or months).
Temp Solution to this problem is...
face down your phone to the flat floor or a table, gently hit the back, strong enough to shock the devide, but not that strong to crack your screen.
one other simple way is to drop your phone to the floor, screen is facing down, from about 30 cm high from the floor.
"simply, hit your device like you used to fix your ur old TV. "
that is just a temp. GL.

[SOLVED] Extremely weak Wi-Fi signal

The Wi-Fi signal on my I9505 is terribly weak. Sitting at the same desk the router is on - full signal; Walk 3-4 meters away - signal drops to 1 line; Go to a different room - disconnects due to no signal. I can only see 3 networks at 1 signal line while on another phone I get 11 networks - all with signal at 2+ lines.
My router is perfectly fine (works as expected and has great coverage on other phones/laptops - it still gives off great signal if I go next door/above/below me).
Phone software side I'd say is fine too, but I'm not 100% sure:
Issue happens both on latest WizCyan (TW based) and on latest RR (CM14 based), both using different kernels.
Currently on XXUHPG1 bootloader and baseband. PDA version is XXUPPI1 (according to the "Phone INFO" app).
Hardware side, I've tried a few things - bent all of the golden springs I could find just a tiny bit upwards, tried to clean the gray contacts on the mid bezel as best as I could (dry microfiber) - they weren't dirty or anything, but they seem scratched/shiny where the spring would have come into contact, is that bad? (I can take pictures if necessary)
I even flipped the blue antenna wire around (though I think that one only affects cell signal).
I also have to note that there's something wrong with my Wi-Fi IC / mobo because sometimes it stops working altogether (won't turn back on), needing a reboot or physical intervention. I doubt that would affect signal strength, as long as it's actually turning on, I guess?
Edit:
SOLVED!
Well, this is probably a very unique/fringe case - I found out there was a crack in my motherboard, just below one of the antenna connectors. I also found out that pushing down on where the crack is relinks the motherboard connections and gives back the full Wi-Fi signal. So I "ghetto-rigged" a piece of plastic to push down on the crack when I put the mid-bezel back in, and it seems to be working for now. Hope it holds up and doesn't cause other issues.
Actually, it could affect signal strength. You might want to check your antenna wire running down the right side of the battery compartment and make sure it isn't broken or partly disconnected.
You should also note that some phones have better antennas, thus having better reception.
So comparing it to a different phone isn't really a good way to measure the effectiveness.
Took some pics, I've no idea if they're of any help. Maybe somebody can tell if there's something wrong.

That's the wire I had flipped around. I even disconnected it to see if there's a difference, and it only weakened the cell signal. Full cell signal when I put it back. No change regarding Wi-Fi. If I run the phone with the mid bezel off, I only get 2 lines even next to the router, and it doesn't even connect - so I suppose the mid bezel antennas connect?

True, still, from full signal to 1/0 lines as soon as I go from my desk (and router) to my bed 5m away isn't right. Wi-Fi reception used to be as good on my S4 as on the other phones. (I can't remember exactly when this started.)
I believe you have a radio chip issue. Something that software cannot fix.
Solved. Thank you for trying to help.
@cLick1338: Telling people you solved the issue without revealing the solution doesn't help anyone who may come across this thread in the future. So how did you solve it?

I had edited the first post. Figured it would be most visible for such people.

If you edited it yesterday I wouldn't have noticed it. The XDA app automatically drills down to the first unread post and I don't always think to scroll back up.
Sorry.
