Silly question but here goes...
I currently have a Nexus One and I'm planning on buying a XOOM next month (wifi only)
question is: can I log into my XOOM with my current google account (used by my N1) and choose what apps to sync etc.. or will I have to create a new google account entirely, just for the XOOM?
Basically, can you be on 2 android devices at once with the same username from google, or not? Cuz I know if you change phones, you just login and it will re-download apps, bookmarks, settings etc.... but will it recognize the fact that you're on a tablet and sorta create 2 profiles?
You only need one Google account. All of your purchased applications will transfer over and you will have the ability to pick and choose what you'd like to install on either device. From my experience, the auto restore for apps and the rest of your data only occurs when you are using the same device, but I could be wrong. For reference, I'm using an LG Optimus for work and a Nexus S for my personal device.
You only need one account. I'm using my N1 and i have a rogers captivate for work and i can sync everything on both phones. It's great to only have to pay once for my apps and use them on a different phone.
You can definitely do that. I have 3 phones synced to my Google account right now.
The web based Android market seems enabled for just this. It will differentiate devices and you can "send" an app to your specific device.
My guess is its not a problem as Android tablets have been around for months now.
Purchased apps can be used on my phone and tablet. The auto restore seems to be device type specific because when I got a loaner MyTouch 4g, it installed everything that was on my N1 automagically (a little surprising).
On the tablet, purchased apps showed up as purchased, but nothing auto downloaded.
My tablet is Archos so it is not official market supported like the Xoom so it would be interesting to find out about the auto restore but I doubt it will.
Market seems to be pretty good about device type identification.

The other thing that seems to impact whether or not apps are restored automatically is when you put in your Google account during the activation process. It seems that all of my devices will restore my apps if I put it in immediately after flashing a new ROM or doing a full wipe, but if I skip that process and add it later, the apps are not restored.
Either way, the device will recognize what you've purchased and will automatically sync contacts, calendar, etc. if you choose it to.
We should ask in the xoom section... I just ordered one too and am kinda interested in how this works.

You only need one Google account! I have a DInc nd an Evo and they both are on all the time and never any problems. You should be good to go!
It's not a 'real' tablet experience, per se, but I just activated a second android device on my account. I've been using CM7 on my N1. I loaded a CM7 ROM onto a Nook Color yesterday, and almost all of my market apps came down when I signed in, many of them with settings intact. Both devices are displayed on the My Account -> Settings page on the web market.
I've been managing the app loads on each device separately. So far I have not noticed any cross-contamination of apps or settings from one device to the other. Contacts have remained synced up the whole time.

when I setup my Xoom yesterday i used the same account as on my mesmerize and it synced
Things like contacts from gmail, emails, and calendar, pretty much the usual google apps.. As far as the other apps, they did not sync in three slightest. The apps which I've paid for show up in my apps so i can download them but they do not do it automatically and I've had to manually download each one and set whether it auto updates or not. As for the other apps
Not a single one even showed as having been on my phone. I guess the rule of thumb is if its a paid app, it will be possible to manually install it from my apps but free apps do not at all carry over.
this is my experience and certainly there is room for improvement... There are apps out there that can do this for us, market quick links is one of those I think. It backs up links for the installed apps so they can be quickly installed on an(other) device...

Most apps will sync in both places. I had trouble with docs 2 go. Would only register on the device it was first installed (licensing issues). They offered to reassign to the new device but then it wouldn't work on the first one.

I noticed when I was purchasing docs to go that it said it would only work on one device at a time, but i think that unless otherwise specified in the apps tos that it should work for all apps but that some companies want to force a second buy for each device even though I can only user one at a time... Greedy aorta sorta and makes me not wanna use apps like that to discourage devs from taking such actions..

I just wanted to make sure... because it would suck to have alllllllllll the apps from my N1 on my XOOM .. I wanna pick which ones. and by picking which ones to keep on XOOM, I didn't want it to "sync" with my N1 and delete them there too!
If they are truly treated as 2 different objects, then perfect!
On a side note, I can't wait for the damn WIFI-only version to come out already!!!
I can confirm that they are all treated differently.
I currently have 3 devices on the go at once and all from the same Google account.
I have the nexus one, nexus s and galaxy tab and I have access to all of my purchased apps on each device without having to install them all......its great!

I bought mine at retail for full price, and do not plan on using any net other than my home wifi and tethered wifi from my sgs mez if on the go. No breed for a 2nd monthly bill. I would encourage you to purchase it from other than vzw. According to vzw they cannot Add device insurance unless its got a phone no... crappy huh?
How much cheaper do you think wifi only will be and when will it be out?

I have an N1 and just got a viewsonic g tab. None of my apps automatically installed on the tab using the same google account, but I can confirm that my purchased apps were in the list. If you have a ton of free apps and don't want to dig through the market for them all, you can use a backup app to back them up on your N1 and then copy them over to the tab and restore the ones you want. This saved me a lot of time.
Jon
actually, I didn't want ANY apps to sync at all I want both my devices to be unique, but use the same google account. Looks like I'll be ok!
Thanks for all the responses guys!
As long as my N1 and future XOOM sync contacts/calendar/etc... but not all apps, I'm happy
hey all... had my tab less than 24 hours. Someone was kind enough to break into my apartment today and steal my TAB and an Asus laptop. Any suggestions on a way I could track it? I didn't even have enough time with it to download a tracker app, so I know its a long shot..
go to the market from your friend's comp. market.android.com. login with the same account you use on your device and remote install plan b from lookout security. i know look out uses sms for phones to communicate with the location servers in the background. sgt doesnt have sms. it might work for your tab.. might not. worth a shot.

Did you use a credit card to purchase it? Some credit cards (My Amex does) gives you 90 days protection if lost, stolen or damaged as well as an extra year warranty. Just make sure you report it to the police along with the SN#.
yeah, im gonna file in the morning and call ole' Visa. Super bummer, I lost a loooooot of work docs.
.... and I was so looking forward to getting to play around with my brand new tab after work. Ive been so busy, Id only spent about an hour with it...
also, because i did set up a gmail widget on the homescreen, I went ahead and sent myself a sufficiently angry email so it'll beep at whoever did it and they'll see it right there. I can only hope they see it before I change the password..

I don't think so, these kinds of things are usually a once-per-user type deal.

Google per device registration for apps and play store
Ok
Sorry upfront i cant remember or find where i read this. Thou i know it was a credible source for the most part . I have read that goggle Jelly bean has a feature built into it . To attach a unique identifier from that device(guessing esn) to the market and apps purchased on that device and make them not available on other devices unless you re purchase them for each device you have. If this holds any truth. I would think the 25.00 credit would also be linked to such a standard. If in fact true you would have 25.00 for each tab. not a total of 50.00. But both tablets can link to the same google wallet account. As i use google wallet for may things other then APP Store. Same with my Pay Pal Debit card.I just find it safer.
Sorry if this is a bit off topic but its interesting to really know if this holds any Truth. I have some not so cheap apps. I would SCREAM If they told me i had to re purchase them. because i buy a new device every year lately.

I highly doubt that that is true as it would make no sense to force users to buy the same app multiple times. Are you perhaps referring to the encryption of paid apps? That's to prevent piracy and cracking rather than the above stated purpose.
I activated my I/O & got the credit but when I activated the one from Gamestop, I didn't get the credit.
It would be prone to too much abuse, eh? Having multiple credits on one account. Theoretically, if you bought a tablet, activated it, returned it citing display problems, and repeat 7 more times, you'd have enough credits to receive a free Nexus 7 from the Play Store, no?
Unless I'm horrible mistaken, that's how I understand it.

Hey guys and gals,
Tonight my a500 was stolen. I work in sales and use it to look things on the net for customers (like price comparisons, etc) and use it for the website and lots of other business-type things (as well as lots of personal pics etc).
But, unfortunately when my back was turned, someone swiped it...!!!! argh:angry:
I had the newest release of jellybean on it from the forums here on xda, but had no remote wipe app installed (never even crossed my mind to do it). Therefore, I'm wondering if the is any remote wipe abilities in jellybean or if there was an app by chance that i had installed that would have this feature hidden (like onavo or norton utilities... reading now).
If anyone can help that would be amazing! Changed all my passwords, etc. So, I should be fine there. thanks guys

Well, I don't have a lot of faith in those types of apps. They usually only work if an idiot steals it. Over here, pinching phones and tabs is big business, and usually done by pro's. They're quick to dump the device to another agent, who runs a stock full rom on it, clones the IMEI number from a good device , then dumps it to one of the umpteen million fly by night resellers. They (moscow govt) talked about cracking down on multiple PH number/IMEI combinations, then quickly realized over half the devices in Russia would stop working! Including their own!
Best thing to do, never let it out of your sight. Get a new device, like I did my phone, and the pain goes away.
But then again, maybe your culprit is a true idiot, and will post fotos to your facebook account!!!!!

The last person to steal one of my phones was a true idiot. This happened at my school and good thing I'm done with school. I was in class and had my phone charging and I had it out because I trusted most everyone in the room and would known who would have taken it.
So he asked if it was my phone and about a minute later he leaves the room. I noticed it was gone and others around me saw him take it. (Not obvious at all)
So I had the Vipre Mobile Security beta installed so I immediately logged into the web interface to activate GPS tracking and set off the alarm. Except when I logged in the service hadn't communicated when the app/phone in over a month so it was useless.
Over the period of the next 24 hours he had used the phone to take photos, delete everything on my sdcard, spam my YouTube feed with countless videos, and make voice calls to their own friends and family. So I looked on my carrier's account management and found all these numbers. Between the school staff and police it was possible to track the calls back to his identity. I got my phone back the next day...without the case and screen protector, sucks that they kept that.
So the lesson is make sure you have good, working anti theft solutions with cascading failsafes.
The next app I installed after ditching Vipre was Avast. This was a good solution with some flaws. Avast was one of the first Play Store security apps to utilize root access. Because of root in addition to setting as a device administrator it was also installed as a system service and app. This made it persistent and harder to remove.
The issue with avast was since the app was in /system and not /data it would have to be completely reconfigured after flashing each nightly update. Sometimes I'd forget and then it wouldn't work. It claimed to support the CM backup script except it was designed for CM7 and CM9 uses a different type of backup.
The other issue with avast was there was no web interface. You could only send commands through SMS.
Since I got my Nexus I bought Cerberus anti theft its perfect. It has system app support. Instead of a user setup it apparently registers the device ID or SIM or something and loads the user account from the cloud server. So all I do is add the apk to the CM backup list and it auto configures when installed. I can use SMS control or the website. I can monitor and control pretty much the entire phone and it takes a front camera photo on invalid pass code.
I check weekly to ensure its still running and it hasn't failed once.
As a failsafe I also have the first screen splash modded to my contact info in case of loss. Its encrypted so if anything maybe only a boot loader update could remove it.

I think that only works if you accept all the tracking disclaimers to enable location history and not many people have history turned on.
I guess the lesson is you can't let your guard down for even a second. One time I let a friend sync their iPod touch on my computer since they didn't have a PC and they ended up snatching my classic monochrome iPod. I'm still upset to this day since they didn't take my old iPod touch instead. That just proves the first gen iPod touch is so bad people won't even steal it.

If you download the lookout app and install it, if you ever lose your tablet, on the lookout website you can see where it is, (if GPS was enabled when lost) you can also do a remote wipe, and a remote siren, make it put off an alarm remotely.
Its a good app to have just in case, but doesn't help if the app was not installed before being lost or stolen.

well, i found them, loks like my phone automatically snagged them in an update somewhere...
odd but free.
found in the play store order info screen along with some books and music...
Looks like they're doing what they did with the N7 I guess. N7 owners got transformers and some other junk like that for free.
I don't like the idea that the phone can do things like that without my permission. I mean if it can make purcases (that are free) what's to keep the same thing from happening for items that are not free?

Dude, they're just gifts from Google. Items that are automatically added to your account when you register a new Nexus device. The device didn't make any "purchases"--it didn't go out into the store and press buttons behind your back--these are just things that Google gifted into your account, and that's just how these gifts show up in your account, as so-called free "purchases" (they gotta show up somehow, right?).

How did you access your purchases on your nexus 4 in the youtube app ?
The way I did it was on the computer access the purchases then move those purchases to Favorites, then in the app, click on your profile then it should be there but only thing is that it says unsupported playback or something. What can I do to watch them on my phone?
