JB gaming combo - Nexus S General

Hi everyone, I was just wondering if anyone has a good JB gaming combo? It has to be able to run all the big apps smoothly like dead trigger, N.O.V.A 3 and so on. A few tweaks wouldn't hurt, or a lot, also, currently running stock with VTA kernel. And trust me, I would love to experiment with all the ROMS posted here but I have a download limit that I have reached, all opinions welcome.

up for this. also looking for good rom and kernel combo. im on jellybelly 1.0.0 with latest thalamus kernel

Thanks, bound to be more people with the same problem, I tried to download Air kernel weekly but I don't know which as to click on.

For me is CM9 RC2 with Matr1x kernel the way better rom than any JB roms availible thise days. Its working so smooth and all games have good fps. Playing Order and Chaos without any lag

Interested in this as well. There's one way I can run Dead Trigger smoothly in my stock JB rom, go into Manage Apps -> Running, and Force Stop each one of them!
I posted a probable reason at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1816140
If there's a ROM that do not need me to Force Stop running Apps, I am all up for it!

you will have to try all the ROM available if you love to experiment...

I found One until a better one comes out, it's xenon HD with air kernel, credit for telling me goes to skavis, so say thanks. Also, playing dead trigger with no lag.

What's even better is crank it up to 1400 MHz and do the tegra 3 hack for dead trigger, and and get ultra settings. its amazing a 2 1/2 yr old phone can run it with all the bells and whistles. Try it out you won't be sorry. Just don't forget to plug your phone in

If you check one of my other threads, about my nexus s screen, I thing I didn't do it properly and caused the game and my whole nexus s to freeze, may try it later after re download, going to try some heavy games, I will report back if they work.

after trying lots of ics roms and kernels i found a good combination (if not the best) i posted about it with all the needed settings here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1726186
as for Jelly Bean i haven't tried lots of combinations yet so i can't really judge.

Sorry, my key board died last night and was to lazy to get batteries lol. That is pre-gingerbread. that was dark slide 4.2 oc'd to 1.3ghz after a full wipe and install.
My highest for GB just barely broke 1800 @ like 1807 iirc. that's oc'd to 1.2ghz. stock was 1776
I'm getting 2197 overclocked to 1300 with 69 vsel.
It's stable and I don't get unexplained crashes with GB.

I use Jrummy's app, exclusively.. it's given me better results than any other one. The 1.45 setting was taken out in recent versions, but there is a setting that enables "Legacy Frequencies". I used ULV 1.45Ghz preset, on performance governor setting for the purpose of this benchmark. I'm using the deodexed/rooted version of Gingerbread with P3droid's "preview of TranQ" 10% battery mod/CRT animation zip. I have roughly 40 things frozen with Titanium(things that do not hinder my daily use in any way). That's about it. I have something like 120 apps installed from the market, as well. Screen is set to 180 density, ads blocked.
Other than actually using the 1.45ghz setting, I did nothing to prepare for a benchmark, specifically.
I usually stick to the 1.15Ghz ULV setting for daily use, just because I have more need for a battery than absurdly fast speed, and really, who **needs** much higher than stock??

What this ROM is:
Rooted (Superuser/Busybox)
Debloated
Desensed
Slightly Themed (Jdk/Nocoast/UOT Kitchen)
Tweaked
Base 2.11.605.9 (Jrocker23)
AOSP Launcher2 and Lockscreen for now...
What this ROM isn't:
Something really creative. A good portion of the theme came from JDK/Nocoast's ROM, and the UOT.
Fully tested. I whipped this up in about 2 days.
Completed. I will be working on this in my spare time.
Custom kernel-ified. Uses the stock HTC kernel.

I would like to know this as well if anyone else has any input.
Well I flashed faux's kernel and everything seems nice and smooth....the only difference I can see/notice at this point is the max clock speed on faux's is about 60mhz less than ktoonsez....which I kinda prefer because I usually had ktoonsez set to 1809 and it would randomly switch to 1890 every time I ran MC3. Other than that...battery life seems decent enough...will only tell with time....no other pros or cons at this time to report
Scaling seems a bit more advanced in this kernel as well.

I would agree with you on the OC between the two, but KT also under volts to 192 and have a range of governors compared to Faux. Also using the smartv2 seems to be quite conservative and have the performance boost to scale from 192 to 1890 if you choose those settings. Faux was killing my battery whether OC to 1809 or 16??. I'm really enjoying KT and think it was a good switch from Faux, especially running with KyanROM 1.5. This is just my $.02.

Can't comment on battery yet.....but doesn't seem too bad at this point. Gonna have to let it sit overnight to tell. As for the UV/UC of ktoonsez....unfortunately I have one of the "crap phones" that makes everything act all crazy...once you raise the voltage a tad it seems stable enough. Never said one was better than the other.....at this point from a basic use standpoint they are pretty equal....

thanks, but i've searched already for some help but no threads seem to outline what a kernel actually does, just how to change them or that one is fast or awesome or great.... but what does a kernel control compared to a rom, and what are the different functions of each, and what does changing each get me? or at least, since this thread is specific to kernels, what are the answers to the above questions when talking about the kernel....
or should i just post a new thread asking this?
from wikipedia
kernel:
In computing, the kernel (from German Kern, nucleus, core[1]) is the main component of most computer operating systems; it is a bridge between applications and the actual data processing done at the hardware level. The kernel's responsibilities include managing the system's resources (the communication between hardware and software components).[2] Usually as a basic component of an operating system, a kernel can provide the lowest-level abstraction layer for the resources (especially processors and I/O devices) that application software must control to perform its function. It typically makes these facilities available to application processes through inter-process communication mechanisms and system calls.

LOCKSCREEN BUG
1. It seems the lockscreen animation when you power the phone on(the splash that surrounds the padlock), seems to stop working. It used to appear after about 5 seconds again. It does appear when pressing the screen.
CRT BUG
The animation when turning off the screen disappeared.

Deleted my APN? I dunno, can't connect to tower.
Bugs? Try full wipe and flash it again. I don't thinl there's bugs

If your not running pure stock chances most "bugs" are from mods/themes/custom Roms. Its hard to call that app drawer mess up top a bug while at the same time its obvious from the screen shot some mods have been made.
There's a small bug on the lockscreen where the splash animation stops working. Happened to me on stock as well. I sent OP a PM about it, maybe one of you guys can verify? My friend has a stock JB NS and his doesn't do it anymore either.
Honestly, I have yet to notice any bugs on ota. Jb is amazing in my experience.

updated to brainmaster's jb rom after (unintentionally) deleting absolutely everything on my device including sdcard, data and current rom (was left with just a bootloader and cwm on my phone) and haven't seen any bugs so far.
Updated op

When pressing power button to wake, sometimes homescreen shows up before lockscreen.
To anyone having problems, I would recommend wiping and reflashing. If you updated straight from the ota that was pushed to your device and you're having problems, try downloading the stock .zip, wiping and then flashing. Seeing as I have no problems at all and am thoroughly enjoying my jellybean.

I personally wouldn't really classify that as a bug. If you immediately try to wake the phone shortly after turning the screen off, it'll do this. My G2 does it. The phone hasn't fully gone into deep sleep. Did the same thing in ICS too.
Most people that have problems don't do full wipes

Stock is STABLE. People need to full wipe and re flash, without themes or mods before reporting bugs

Anybody find a fix for this?

Anybody encounter this jumbled up text and what the cause/fix would be (besides a reboot)?
I've seen this in aokp and aosp ics roms, namely dark unicorn 2.5 and synthetic nightmare.
Thanks.

Turn on long press back to kill in settings and kill the app when it acts up. That's been a long time ics bug.

Yup. As soon as you see scrambled letters, long press back and kill whatever app shows them.

When I long press back nothing happens.
I have seen this many a time, it usually is more prominant in older ICS roms, i am surprised that you are still having this issue as i havn't seen in since creamed glacier, how often do you get this?

Maybe 1-2 times a week. I've only used Apex Launcher, wondering if it's more specific to that app?
If anything go into apex settings and click on restart app. It'll lake care of it. That's how I did it

Hmm, I use stock launcher (i like that the best), why don't you try that? Otherwise, wipe dalvik and cache. If that doesn't fix your problem in a week, reflash, use Synthetic AospX, thats the most up to date. Or you can try jellybean, i like Dark Jellybelly (now toasted marshmellow or something) the best for jelly bean. If neither of those work, considering going to glacier one v or something sense like.

I have the issue once in awhile on newer ics ROMs using nova or trebuchet. Listen to Synthetic.Nightmare. He's spot on.

Found it - I'm using Dark Unicorn right now, it was in the AOKP settings under 'General UI'. I haven't encountered this scrambled text recently but when I do I'll try your trick.
Thank you!
I was having this issue in DU 2.5 also. The only solution I found was killing the app itself. And it wasn't related only to Launcher (I used Apex). I got this issue in PowerAmp too (and any others apps), and have to kill it to fix.
I've seen this, but it goes away after killing the app or a hot reboot works ...

I found out that this scrambled font bug usually never happens when using the default launcher for ICS 4.0.3 it doesn't have all the customzations as apex but is smoother imo an the icons an dock can be theme using the theme chooser .

Be sure to move to system/apps an give rw r r permission installing as a regular will give you a force close when adding apps from widget tab if not a system app other than that this launcher is beast.

I have found it is usually Apex Launcher. I have had it happen a few times and I usually just restart it to clear it up. Worst case, reboot the phone...
