n00b - moving from CM7 to another rom? - Defy Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Apologies for the state of this question, but it's been a while
I've been using CM7 on my unlocked Defy since I bought it (6-8 months). However, recently it's gotten a lot more unstable; it freezes up all the time, I can't wake it up, google maps will crash half the time, the camera too, and it involves me restarting it a fair bit. I need to sort it out and I thought I could take this opportunity to try out a new ROM
However I haven't done anything ROM related for a while, and the computer I originally rooted/installed a new ROM on my Defy with is no long gone...so I'm not even sure what programs I need to install.
I seem to remember, the way the Defy is set up, it isn't as simple as wiping the phone and installing any ROM on it?
Could anyone point me in the direction of a guide on here dedicated to moving from CM7 to another ROM? From scratch? Failing that, I may be tempted to just try and wipe and get CM7 on there from the beginning...not even sure where to start
Thanks

If you want to flash a stock ROM, you need to flash the SBF through RSDLite.
While to flash a custom ROM(CM7,CM9), boot into recovery, wipe all, flash the zip from sdcard.

nice one, thanks. It's just as simple as that when changing from one ROM to another? I thought something to do with how the Defy's memory worked meant some kind of 'backtracking; wasn't possible

Yep, that simple. You could try Pikachu Edition, for example, which is even easier (just get into Recovery, install zip, choose the zip file and then AROMA installer does almost everything that's needed). I'm just starting to try it, many people like it.
If you move between CM7 nightlies it isn't even necessary to wipe data, but given your condition, I would recommend you to wipe everything and start again (remember to backup apps and data).
Good luck!

great, always good to see a bit of pikachu
can I go straight from CM7 to pikachu via a wipe? isn't CM7 on kernel 2.3.7?

[Q] Stuck on Google logo, can't access recovery mode

I've just tried upgrading to ICS and failed. Apparently I flashed the wrong kernel - should have flashed the CM7 one, but flashed the CM9.
Now my Defy is stuck on the Google logo and I don't know how to reach recovery mode. Pressing Power+voldown does nothing. Power+volup gives me the bootloader, which asks me to connect a usb cable, but I have no idea what to do after that.
I have two Nandroid backups: one stock (2.2) and another with CM7 (2.3.7). My Defy has a green lens.
Is there any way to restore my phone to one of those backups?
Thanks in advance
Do you still see the blue led for custom recovery?

Do not flash any sbf's. Reboot the phone, at the blue led press Vol- and when you get into boot menu, flash the correct kernel. If you flashed Defy build, flash CM7 (Froyo) kernel. If you flashed the Defy+ build, flash CM9 (Bingerbread) kernel.

I see the blue led, but it goes on to green regardless of what I do (power+voldown does nothing). I've tried to access recovery mode several times, but the phone doesn't respond. Maybe I'm doing something wrong.

I've read the guide, but my original SBF is missing ever since MegaUpload's demise. Is it possible to use the Nandroid backup instead?

Ok, apparently I wasn't pressing the button at the right time. Recovery mode is now working. However, I don't have the correct kernel in my SD card - only the wrong one.
My Nandroid backup seems not to be working too, apparently. I went into recovery and restored it, but boot still doesn't work. I wiped data/cache/dalvik cache and tried again, but it still didn't work. I'm at a loss here.
Should I try to flash some other sbf, since I can't find my phone's stock one?

I just tried installing the zip from the sdcard, but I got an error message: "Can't make /tmp/update_binary. Installation aborted". It seems that I can't install any zip now.
Is there any way out of that? I'd be more than happy if I could just flash my nandroid backup, even if that means being stuck without ICS for a bit more time.
I'm on ClockworkMod Recovery v2.5.1.8, if that helps.

Hi,
I faced a similar issue but it was since I flashed CM9 for Defy in my Defy+ with 2.3.6(stock) ! Nothing was working and I would get some boot errors! I rectified it by flashing full SBF and then rooting. Well if you want I can provide you with the SBF I have but it is for 2.3.6 and so you will loose downgradability. I have 4.5.1-134-DFP-1321 - retail-asia full Blur multilanguage with me. However, you can also give Walter's fixed SBF and Nandroid backup a try
Thanks, it turns out that flashing a sbf was a nice way out of this mess. I flashed a 2.2.2 which is almost identical to my stock rom (couldn't find that one).
If I root my phone now, can I still try to restore my nandroid backup? Or should I just skip that and try flashing ICS again?
My SD card has the 03-19 CM9 Nightly, gapps and both CM9 and CM7 signed kernels. Should that suffice? CM7 kernel is the right one for green lens defy, right?

If you are on a green lensed Defy, then yes - flash CM7 signed kernel and one of the Froyo bulds of Quarx or Epsylon3 - try them all if you wish and see which one you like the most.
Procedure is easy:
1. Full wipe
2. Flash CM7 kernel
3. Flash ROM
4. Flash gapps
5. Full Wipe
6. Reboot
When you decide to try a new ROM, there is no need to flash the kernel again, just wipe, flash the new ROM and gapps and then wipe again.

Thanks, that's great. Are all regular Defy roms Froyo builds unless stated otherwise? I couldn't find that info on the files I have.
One question: by full wipe you mean data/cache/dalvik cache or is there anything else that I'm missing?

Yes, "Defy build" means Froyo kernel based, "Defy+ build" means GB kernel based.

I've just rooted my phone again, followed the steps and installed CM9. It worked like a charm. I was pleasantly surprised at how smoothly it runs, didn't expect that sort of quality from a Nightly. Awesome.
Thanks a lot for saving my phone, guys.

Sounds great Well since CM9 nightly is still a long way to go, you may want to dual boot CM7 and CM9. Install CM7 as primary and dual boot to CM9.

[Q] First time ever that im going to use a custom rom

Allright.. i decided to start using a custom rom, which will be CM9. but because of soo mutch information on this website i dont fully understand anymore what to do, and because im still a noob, i cant post in the original thread of CM9.
I have a Red lens Motorola Defy MB525, found out with catlog that i got the bayer camera module , non branded, stock froyo.
Rooted my defy
nandroid backup with 2nd init , made a copy to my laptop to be completely save.
did backup the apps with titanium backup
also have the app battery calibration so i can fix my battery after the custom rom.
i will write the custom rom when my battery is on atleast 50 percent, so it will not die.
So what do i have to do next?
download the correct ROM, it will come as a .zip
copy it to your sdcard, reboot to 2nd init recovery,
factory reset, and wipe dalvik cache from advanced menu.
then in recovery choose install zip from sdcard, choose your ROM.zip, install,
reboot, it will take pretty long until it boots first time because system is rebuilding the dalvik. (~5min)
Wow , thats sounds way more simple then i can find on this site.
Ill try it tommorow night! any further suggestions?
Maybe you should try multiboot first just to be on the safe side.
what is multiboot and how can i do that?
Multiboot is basically the possibility to have two or more different ROMs (e.g. CM7 and CM9) installed at the same time and when you boot up you can choose which ROM you want to use. But it is a bit complicated and it wouldn't work with stock Froyo as one of the ROMs I think.
More suggestions? You should also download the latest gapps from http://goo.im/gapps and put the zip on your sd card as well. After wiping and installing the CM9 Nightly from sd go to install zip from sd again and choose the gapps .zip. After that you can reboot the system.
The gapps are the Google Apps (i.e. Play Store and some more) and without them you can't even setup your Google Account, download apps, use Gmail etc.
Ah thanks for that! downloaded it and saved it to my desktop for now.
Still need to figure out which rom i need to choose.. the epsylon?

That would be good. Try it out and see if it suits your requirements..There are many ROM's for froyo kernel. You can try those and see which suits you best.
Happy Modding.
yeaaay! Thanks for all the great help, it worked perfect and was really easy to do!
Cant wait till all the apps are back on my phone from the backups that i made and then let the modding begin! haha

Questions go in the Q&A section

I went through the thread thoroughly, but didnt find a solution

So, I posted before about wanting to flash a custom rom to my newly bought Milestone2. Sadly, no replies.
My problem now is that I have rooted, did the droid2bootstrap and then flashed Bootmenu via CWM, downloaded the MS2GINGER 4.0 with the kernel update and baseband switcher and the blur apps.
I boot into recovery fine, wipe/factory reset works. Clears the cache. But when I try to restore the system of the Ms2ginger, it says that the md5's dont match. Can anyone tell me what to do to get this rom working on my Milestone2?

You can try this fix: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=714114
Works in linux, if you have windows, you're gonna have to find md5sum somewhere else.

Thanks man! I appreciate it. I have one more question though, for the ms2ginger, the kernel update cant be downgraded to froyo afterwards?
I've been reading but I havent really tried anything. I just (literally, 5 minutes ago) flashed the CM7 on the phone.

Yes, I think you can, by flashing your original rom's sbf.
Check here: http://and-developers.com/sbf:milestone2 and if the links are down, download the sbf from here: http://sbf.droid-developers.org/umts_milestone2/list.php (check the build numbers and the carriers)
Regards
I'll look into it.
Hmm... I'll have to look into that. I'm not sure about it, I just got the phone 2 days ago. Lmfao
Can you put a guide up here for me to follow? Cause, I really like the ms2ginger rom. I might even flash it today, assuming I get the files

I never really tried this rom ever, but i'll try to explain the flashing steps more clearly.
It's well explained on the rom's thread though: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1169038
OK, you need these files:
The rom itself: https://docs.google.com/folder/d/0B...p1T0U/edit?docId=0B3OovGFEtCdnajgyRHV5dXg3SG8
The motoblur apps (if you want them): https://docs.google.com/folder/d/0B...p1T0U/edit?docId=0B3OovGFEtCdnNHA0dERlSFVxLUU
Patch for milestone 2: it's at the end of the roms thread
Gingerbread kernel (in case you are coming from stock froyo, cm7, or miui): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=26889742&postcount=843
RSD Lite, at least version 5.0 (google it, should come right up) and the motorola drivers (if you don't have them): http://rootzwiki.com/topic/3216-roo...click-added-for-windows-linux-osx/#entry74495 If you rooted your phone with superoneclick or similar, you should have them already.
Steps:
0) Unzip the rom's folder from the zip to /sdcard/clockworkmod/backup and put the other 2 zips (motoblur and the ms2 patch) on the root of the sdcard.
1) Get into custom recovery (vol. down on the blue led)
2) Wipe data/factory reset, Wipe cache.
3) Go to nandroid -> restore and select MS2Ginger.
4) Go to install zip from sd card -> and select the MS2 patch. Repeat with motoblur.
5) Reboot, it will get stuck on a black screen. Remove the battery, wait 10 seconds and put it back. Hold the vol down, camera (all the way down) and the power button at the same time for 10 secs, let them go, you should see a black screen with "bootloader" at the top.
6) Plug in your phone to your pc, fire up RSD Lite (at least version 5.0) and flash the GB kernel's sbf. The phone will reboot.
7) That should do it
Good luck :good:
Still nothing
I still get the m5dsums mismatch. I'll have to do a little more looking for that file Too bad, I wanted something stable like that with working 720p
I'm reading here that I need to flash a fixed sbf file. I assume I need to do this with rsd lite the same way I'd have to if I bricked my defy?

[Q] Please help me with my defy plus

Hello there! I really hope you can help me with this, because I don`t have any other ideas or even the courage to try new ones. I recently bought a defy plus and after tens of pages read on the Internet about kernels, SBFs, ROMs and other android stuff I decided to start modding it. It came with a stock 2.3.6 Android, which I swapped for a ParanoidAndroid 2.14 (with Android 4.1.1), which I liked a lot, but I was quite laggy.
Then I decided to look for other ROMs and I wanted to install CM7. But here is my problem: I can`t. I tried to flash this file (cm-7.2.0-jordan), but it didn`t work. Then I had to flash a SBF to get my phone back. I think it was the wrong SBF (filename: JRDNEM_U3_3.4.2_179-002_DEBLUR_SIGN_SIGNED_UCAJRDNEMARAB1B80AA03A.0R_PDS03C_USAJRDNFRYORTTR_P013_A013_HWp3_Service1FF.sbf) because it bricked ( hard brick, I couldn`t even start it), but luckly I had it fixed cause I still have my guarantee (which is a mistery for me, how did they do it? didnt they see it was rooted and this broke the terms of the guarantee?).
Anyway, they re-softed it and now I have a working phone. I rooted it, installed 2nd init and tried again. Now with a nightly version of CM7: cm-7-20130301-NIGHTLY-jordan. It still goes into a bootloop. I went through all the steps, root phone, install 2nd init, Wipe data/factory and Wipe cache and install from sd card.
My first and most important question is: do I have to be on stock android (meaning I have to flash the stock 2.3.6) every time I want to flash a custom ROM? Or can I be on, let`s say ParanoidAndroid, and change directly to CM10?
And my second question: How can I install CM7 for defy plus?
Thank you for your future responses.
Ok, I figured out the CM7 part, I think I was trying to flash a wrong nightly file. I got another one and I finally have CM7 on my phone. But, please, can someone give me an answer to my first question: For every custom ROM I install, I have to go back to stock 2.3.6 every time? Or can I flash, for example a MIUI, right now, on my CM7, without going back to stock rom?
No need to flash stock every time. Data should be wiped along with cache

Downgrade from CM11 to CM 7 or any other ROM

Hi
I have installed CM11 (4.4.2) on Defy and it is working fine except the battery.
This entailed installing TWRP
Earlier I had MIUI Pikachu edition.
Questions
1. How do I install or restore my MIUI backup again.
2. Also I would like to downgrade to CM 7/9 which is more stable
Any links or step by step suggestions would be appreciated
Thanks

Probably you need to flash sbf to get an old bootstrap.

I wan to downgrade as well, preferrably w/o sbf. But I flashed so often by now, searching for the fastest way w/o: 1-sbf, 2-reroot, 3-custom recovery and 4-flashing cm7 would take more time, than the flashing process itself.
So that's what I'm gonna do. Hope it gets snappier then. CM11 with just about 9-10 apps (facebook, messenger, whatsapp, gmail, gcal, aero control, battery stats, es file explorer) is already torture for my defy.

I have an idea, and its a possibility for you. I have a Atrix 4G which also is on CM11, and like you guys on the Defy, has a bigpart mod. For us to downgrade, its flash an old recovery, boot to recovery, factory reset, wipe all partitions (system, data, cache, boot (that should be the ones you have too)), flash desired ROM/restore backup. Not sure if that will work for you, but its worth a shot. If it doesn't work, i'd try sbf'ing (someone posted an sbf lately if i remember correctly
Sent from my ATRIX HD using XDA Free mobile app
Unfortunately I don't know what sbf to take - it might be irrelevant, since i accidentally flashed to bl7 long ago and since I wanted to reroot again, twrp and cm7 it might not matter which one to flash. I am trying to speed things up a bit, and struggle with twrp atm, because safewipe.zip might no longer be safe (unable to enter twrp) or the version was not meant for my configuration.
Now i trimmed all part's and try amplifying services, but it's been a while since i tuned my defy.
OT: I switched to Moto G and E2 (but lost both ones - or they've been stolen) and now I want to reactivate my old pal before switching to anything new again. It's getting expensive...
So don't wait, maybe I'll get CM11 to work good enough again, but if not, I'll try to provide a checklist.
